In der 1968 gegründeten Reihe erscheinen Monographien aus den Gebieten der Griechischen und Lateinischen Philologie sowie der Alten Geschichte. Die Bände weisen eine große Vielzahl von Themen auf: neben sprachlichen, textkritischen oder gattungsgeschichtlichen philologischen Untersuchungen stehen sozial-, politik-, finanz- und kulturgeschichtliche Arbeiten aus der Klassischen Antike und der Spätantike. Entscheidend für die Aufnahme ist die Qualität einer Arbeit; besonderen Wert legen die Herausgeber auf eine umfassende Heranziehung der einschlägigen Texte und Quellen und deren sorgfältige kritische Auswertung.

Der Artikel untersucht den Zusammenhang zwischen Erinnerung, Vergessen und personaler Identität und wendet die Ergebnisse auf den Fall der Alzheimer-Demenz an. Während in der philosophischen Debatte Gedächtnis und Erinnerung zumeist im Kontext von Theorien zur diachronen Identität als formale Kriterien für die Zuschreibung von Identität über die Zeit aufgefasst werden, steht hier das Konzept der biographischen Identität im Zentrum. Es wird argumentiert, dass sowohl explizite als auch implizite Erinnerungen und das Wechselspiel zwischen beiden auf unterschiedliche Weise an der Konstituierung und (...) Aufrechterhaltung biographischer Identität beteiligt sind, und dass die Einbeziehung der empirischen Gedächtnisforschung für die philosophische Analyse von großem Wert sein kann. In diesem Buch werden Aspekte der Aussagenlogik und der Prädikaten­ logik der ersten Stufe behandelt. Eine Mathematisierung und Kalkü­ lisierung der Logik kann natürlich ganz verschieden ausfallen, je nach dem, von welchen Motiven man sich primär leiten läßt. Wir stellen drei Gesichtspunkte, die uns auch als die wesentlichsten erscheinen, in den Vordergrund: Die Formalisierung des Wahrheits­ begriffes, die Formalisierung des Beweisbarkeitsbegriffes und das Problem des Suchens nach Beweisen. Diese drei Aspekte führen zu drei verschiedenen Arten von Kalkülen. Die Betonung des (...) Wahrheitsbegriffes führte auf die untersuchung der Hilberttypkalküle von einem Standpunkt, wie er etwa auch im Buch von Rasiowa-Sikorski [Ra-Si] eingenommen wird. Hierbei wurde besonderen Wert auf die algebraischen Techniken gelegt, denn die Natur der Vollständigkeitsbeweise in diesen Kalkülen läßt sich u. E. eigentlich nur algebraisch verstehen. Etwas überspitzt könnte man formulieren, daß die Vollständigkeitsbeweise in Hilberttypkal­ külen Korollare zu Betrachtungen über Kongruenzrelationen in ge­ wissen Boole'schen Algebren sind. Bei den modelltheoretischen Be­ trachtungen haben wir uns kurz ge faßt und nur einige grundlegende Begriffe vorgestellt. (shrink)

Der Aachener Physiker Michael Krämer sucht am Genfer Teilchenbeschleuniger LHC nach neuen Naturgesetzen. Ein Gespräch über die aufwändige Suche nach Erkenntnis, den Wert philosophischen Reflektierens und die größten offenen Fragen der Physik.

Die aktuelle philosophische Debatte darüber, was ein Leben zu einem sinnvollen Leben macht, wird gemeinhin vor dem Hintergrund einer werttheoretischen Auseinandersetzung innerhalb der übergreifenden Debatte um ein gutes Leben geführt. Ein sinnvolles Leben sei demnach grundsätzlich eines, in dem die Person bestimmten als wertvoll und daher sinnstiftend angesehenen Tätigkeiten nachgeht oder bestimmte zur Sinnstiftung geeignete Werte zu befördern sucht. In meinem Artikel widerspreche ich dieser werttheoretischen Engführung und gehe vielmehr von einer werttheoretisch neutralen Formulierung der Frage nach Sinn im Leben (...) aus: Wie müssen Elemente im Leben einer Person beschaffen sein, damit sie für diese Person eine sinnstiftende Funktion zu entfalten vermögen und die Person daher zu dem begründeten Urteil gelangen kann, dass ihr Leben sinnvoll in dem Sinne ist, als es Sinn im Leben umfasst, wobei dieses Urteil grundsätzlich auch aus der Perspektive Dritter zugänglich und nachvollziehbar bzw. kritisierbar ist? In Auseinandersetzung vor allem mit Susan Wolfs Hybridtheorie eines sinnvollen Lebens argumentiere ich, dass sich die sinnstiftende Funktion von Elementen im Leben in erster Linie durch die soziale Einbettung des eigenen Handelns oder Lebens konstituiert und einsichtig machen lässt: Sinn im Leben konstituiert sich dann, wenn das eigene Handeln oder Leben im Ganzen erstens in einen sozialen Zusammenhang eingebettet ist und man auf diese Weise mit und für andere handelt bzw. lebt sowie einem zweitens diese Einbettung auch wichtig ist. Derart explizierte sinnstiftende Elemente im Leben sind zudem offen für Kritik. Nicht alle sinnstiftenden Elemente sind gleichermaßen wertvoll oder sollten im eigenen Leben und Handeln eine Rolle spielen und verfolgt werden. Dies mag sich aufgrund prudentieller Erwägungen aus der umfassenden Perspektive eines guten und gelungenen Lebens im Ganzen ergeben oder aus einer moralischen Perspektive, wenn die spezifische soziale Einbettung oder die dabei verfolgten Ziele moralisch zu kritisieren sind. Sind meine Überlegungen überzeugend, so sollte man dem werttheoretischen Mainstream der Debatte um Sinn im Leben daher ein gutes Stück weit kritischer gegenüberstehen. (shrink)

Der Band untersucht den Beitrag Pierre Bourdieus fur das politische Denken. Langst als der grosse Klassiker der Soziologie und Gesellschaftstheorie unserer Zeit anerkannt, ist Bourdieu in seiner Bedeutung fur politische Theorie wie politische Wissenschaft noch kaum gewurdigt. Die Frage des Staates und der Politik hangt direkt mit derjenigen der symbolischen Gewalt zusammen (und damit auch mit der Frage nach dem politischen Wert von politischer Wissenschaft, welche dann nicht mehr nur als Aufklarung, sondern auch als Kampf verstanden werden kann), welche (...) Bourdieu zufolge eben vom Staat "monopolisiert" wird. So ware der eigentlich politische Kampf der Kampf um die Hegemonie oder, wie Bourdieu es ausdruckt, um die legitime Sichtweise der sozialen Welt - um die "Soziodizee," die "Legitimation der sozialen Ordnung, wie sie ist." Der Begriff des Staates wird in Anlehnung an Max Webers Definition des Staatsbegriffs als Inhaber des Monopols nicht nur der legitimen physischen Gewaltsamkeit, sondern auch der legitimen symbolischen Gewalt konzeptualisiert. Keine Denkungsart kann es in Sachen Wandlungsfähigkeit mit dem Liberalismus aufnehmen. Ohne diese Eigenschaft hätte der Liberalismus kaum über Jahrhunderte hinweg einflussreich bleiben können. Zugleich ergeben sich aus dieser Wandelbarkeit zwei wichtige Implikationen für ein tieferes Verständnis des Liberalismus. Erstens erschwert sie die Herausarbeitung dessen, was am Liberalismus eigentlich zentral ist. Welche Prinzipien und Werte sind partout nicht verhandelbar? Zweitens legt seine Wandelbarkeit nahe, ihn in Krisenzeiten – wie heute und nicht zum ersten Mal –nicht voreilig abzuschreiben. Welche Art des (...) Wandels aber müsste der Liberalismus durchlaufen, um die gesellschaftlichen Probleme unserer Zeit zu meistern? Diese beiden Fragen fungieren als Ankerpunkte des Handbuches: Einerseits will es zum Kern des Liberalismus vordringen, indem es Prinzipien und Werte des Liberalismus auslotet, und andererseits dessen Stellung bezüglich aktueller Herausforderungen beleuchten. Auf dem Weg dorthin werden klassische Vertreterinnen und Vertreter sowie wichtige historische Ereignisse vorgestellt, in denen der Liberalismus eine wichtige Rolle gespielt hat, Konkurrenten und Varianten des Liberalismus besprochen sowie „über den Westen hinaus“ geschaut. Metaphysik und Pragmatismus scheinen sich seit den Arbeiten von Richard Rorty auszuschließen. Deweys „Erfahrung und Natur“ ist der Versuch eines der bedeutendsten Pragmatisten, eine naturalistische und humanistische Metaphysik zu entwickeln, indem er die klassische europäische Metaphysik transformiert und ihr ihre Fixierung auf ewige Notwendigkeiten und absolute Gewissheiten austreibt. Er versucht, eine Metaphysik für eine in seinen Augen „gemischte“ Welt zu schreiben, in der es Zufall und Notwendigkeit, Gefahren und Ungewissheiten, aber auch für bestimmte Zeiträume verlässliche Ordnungen gibt. Dieser „Klassiker Auslegen“-Band (...) verfolgt dieses Projekt nach, indem die zehn Kapitel von Deweys Buch in zehn interpretierenden Essays historisch eingeordnet und systematisch analysiert werden. Dabei wird der ganze Themenhorizont der klassischen Metaphysik abgeschritten: Von dem Problem der Ordnung und Unordnung der Wirklichkeit über das Leib-Seele-Problem bis zu den Themen Wert und Kritik. Theories of discourse bring to realism new ideas about how knowledge develops and how representations of reality are influenced. We gain an understanding of the conceptual aspect of social life and the processes by which meaning is produced. This collection reflects the growing interest realist critics have shown towards forms of discourse theory and deconstruction. The diverse range of contributions address such issues as the work of Derrida and deconstruction, discourse theory, Eurocentrism and poststructuralism. What unites all of the contributions (...) is a sense that it is essential to provide a realist alternative to the hitherto dominance of social constructionism, hermeneutics and postmodernism, over many of the issues discussed. By developing a realist perspective the different authors attempt to embed discourse within the structured nature of the reality of the world. Realism can situate language, discourse and ideology within context specific, or 'causally efficacious' circumstances. Realism can help to uncover issues of power, representation, and subjectivity and how discursive and other social practices produce real effects. This can help us understand the manner in which social structures are reproduced through various forms of ideology and discourse. When contrasted with "Continental" philosophy, analytical philosophy is often called "Anglo-American." Dummett argues that "Anglo-Austrian" would be a more accurate label. By re-examining the similar origins of the two traditions, we can come to understand why they later diverged so widely, and thus take the first step toward reconciliation.

Prenatal screening for foetal abnormalities such as Down's syndrome differs from other forms of population screening in that the usual aim of achieving health gains through treatment or prevention does not seem to apply. This type of screening leads to no other options but the choice between continuing or terminating the pregnancy and can only be morally justified if its aim is to provide meaningful options for reproductive choice to pregnant women and their partners. However, this aim should not be (...) understood as maximizing reproductive choice per se. Only if understood as allowing prospective parents to avoid suffering related to living with (a child with) serious disorders and handicaps can prenatal screening be a publicly or collectively funded programme. The alternative of moving prenatal testing outside the healthcare system into the private sector is problematic, as it makes these tests accessible only to those who can afford to pay for it. New developments in prenatal screening will have to be assessed in terms of whether and to what extent they either contribute to or undermine the stated aim of providing meaningful options for reproductive choice. In the light of this criterion, this article discusses the introduction of the new non‐invasive prenatal test (NIPT), the tendency to widen the scope of follow‐up testing, as well as the possible future scenarios of genome‐wide screening and ‘prenatal personalised medicine’. Morals from Motives develops a virtue ethics inspired more by Hume and Hutcheson's moral sentimentalism than by recently-influential Aristotelianism. It argues that a reconfigured and expanded "morality of caring" can offer a general account of right and wrong action as well as social justice. Expanding the frontiers of ethics, it goes on to show how a motive-based "pure" virtue theory can also help us to understand the nature of human well-being and practical reason.

According to a historically popular view, emotions are normative experiences that ground moral knowledge much as perceptual experiences ground empirical knowledge. Given the analogy it draws between emotion and perception, sentimental perceptualism constitutes a promising, naturalist-friendly alternative to classical rationalist accounts of moral knowledge. In this paper, we consider an important but underappreciated objection to the view, namely that in contrast with perception, emotions depend for their occurrence on prior representational states, with the result that emotions cannot give perceptual-like access (...) to normative properties. We argue that underlying this objection are several specific problems, rooted in the different types of mental states to which emotions may respond, that the sentimental perceptualist must tackle for her view to be successful. We argue, moreover, that the problems can be answered by filling out the theory with several independently motivated yet highly controversial commitments, which we carefully catalogue. The plausibility of sentimental perceptualism, as a result, hinges on further claims sentimental perceptualists should not ignore. (shrink)

Plural and conflicting values are often held to be conceptually problematic, threatening the very possibility of ethics, or at least rational ethics. Rejecting this view, Stocker first demonstrates why it is so important to understand the issues raised by plural and conflicting values, focusing on Aristotle's treatment of them. He then shows that plurality and conflict are commonplace and generally unproblematic features of our everyday choice and action, and that they do allow for a sound and rational ethics.

The first edition of The Scientific Background to Modern Philosophy took the dialogue of science and philosophy from Aristotle through to Newton. This second edition adds eight chapters, taking the dialogue through the Enlightenment and up to Darwin. This anthology is an attempt to help bridge the gap between the history of science and the history of philosophy.

Many scholars and activists seek to eliminate “race”—the word and the concept—from our vocabulary. Their claim is clear: because science has shown that racial essentialism is false and because the idea of race has proved virulent, we should do away with the concept entirely. Michael O. Hardimon criticizes this line of thinking, arguing that we must recognize the real ways in which race exists in order to revise our understanding of its significance. Rethinking Race provides a novel answer to (...) the question “What is race?” Pernicious, traditional racialism maintains that people can be judged and ranked according to innate racial features. Hardimon points out that those who would eliminate race make the mistake of associating the word only with this view. He agrees that this concept should be jettisoned, but draws a distinction with three alternative ideas: first, a stripped-down version of the ordinary concept of race that recognizes minimal physical differences between races but does not consider them significant; second, a scientific understanding of populations with shared lines of descent; and third, an acknowledgment of “socialrace” as a separate construction. Hardimon provides a language for understanding the ways in which races do and do not exist. His account is realistic in recognizing the physical features of races, as well as the existence of races in our social world. But it is deflationary in rejecting the concept of hierarchical or defining racial characteristics. Ultimately, Rethinking Race offers a philosophical basis for repudiating racism without blinding ourselves to reality. (shrink)

Scientific understanding, this paper argues, can be analyzed entirely in terms of a mental act of “grasping” and a notion of explanation. To understand why a phenomenon occurs is to grasp a correct explanation of the phenomenon. To understand a scientific theory is to be able to construct, or at least to grasp, a range of potential explanations in which that theory accounts for other phenomena. What role does the imagination play in scientific progress? After examining several studies in cognitive science, I argue that one thing the imagination does is help to increase scientific understanding, which is itself indispensable for scientific progress. Then, I sketch a transcendental justification of the role of imagination in this process.

We ordinarily suppose that there is a difference between having and failing to exercise a rational capacity on the one hand, and lacking a rational capacity altogether on the other. This is crucial for our allocations of responsibility. Someone who has but fails to exercise a capacity is responsible for their failure to exercise their capacity, whereas someone who lacks a capacity altogether is not. However, as Gary Watson pointed out in his seminal essay ’Skepticism about Weakness of Will’, the (...) idea of an unexercised capacity is much more difficult to make sense of than it initially appears.
