Henri Bergson

In public discourse trauma is predominantly framed as an overwhelming event undergone by the individual. In this article I first provide a brief genealogy to trace the emergence of what is now the dominant temporal framework of psychological catastrophe. I supplement this evental nosology with a durational consideration of trauma by drawing on the works of Henri Bergson and his articulation of duration, memory, and lived experience. Durational trauma accommodates liminal and ongoing experiences of the catastrophic that are equally devastating (...) to the paradigmatic exemplars of PTSD. This alternate account entails different modalities of reparation and responsibility to the systemic traumatization of others. For this I draw on Levinas and his intersubjective ethics drawing out the relevancy his work has for this concept of durational trauma. Levinas’s emphasis on expiation avoids the reification of the trauma of the other as spectacle and draws into focus one’s own participation in the circulation and continuation of ongoing traumatic networks. This contributes to the emergent alchemy of reading Bergson and Levinas together, but likewise, to philosophy of trauma and the ethical responsibility and temporality of ongoing systemic harm. Though one of anti-intellectualism’s key historical figures, Henri Bergson’s thought has not played a significant role in ongoing discussions of that topic. This paper attempts to help change this situation by discussing the notion at the centre of Bergson’s anti-intellectualism (namely, intuition) alongside the notion at the centre of a central form of contemporary anti-intellectualism (namely, know-how or skill). In doing so, it focuses on perhaps the most common objection to both Bergson and contemporary anti-intellectualists: that their anti-intellectualisms are rather (...) forms of irrationalism. It argues that in fact only a narrow charge of irrationalism applies to Bergsonian intuition and that a form of contemporary anti-intellectualism may offer help in responding to this remaining accusation. « Percevoir, dit Bergson, finit par n'être plus qu'une occasion de se souvenir. » De se souvenir ou de réfléchir? De Descartes à Bergson, toute la différence est là. Et, dans le fond, les deux doctrines sont si proches que l'une ne tarde pas à nous paraître comme la variation de l'autre. Qu'on réfléchisse ou que l'on se souvienne, la perception se fait comme un oubli de ce que l'on perçoit. Mais, tôt ou tard, il faut bien que les choses (...) reviennent et qu'on en tienne compte: cela se voit au bout du souvenir, chez Bergson, au bout de cinq méditations, chez Descartes. Et, rétablies dans leur juridiction, elles nous forcent de penser d'autre façon ce que l'intelligence seule imaginait de concevoir. Du côté de Descartes comme dans celui de Bergson, la philosophie se présente alors comme l'effort pour composer un équilibre entre ces deux postulations adverses, celle de la perception et celle de la réflexion. « Endlich, sagt Bergson, ist die Wahrnehmung nur eine Gelegenheit zurückzudenken. » Zurück- oder nachzudenken? Darin besteht, zwischen Descartes und Bergson, die ganze Verschiedenheit. Und im Grunde genommen, sind die zwei Lehrgebäude so nahe verwandt, daß nicht viel daran fehlt, die eine als eine Veränderung der anderen erscheinen zu lassen. Ob man nun nachdenkt, oder sich erinnert, so stellt sich die Wahrnehmung als ein Vergessen dessen dar, was man vernimmt. Über kurz oder lang aber, müssen die Sachen wiederkommen und darauf muß man Wert legen: das geschieht, bei Bergson, am Ende der Erinnerung, bei Descartes, am Ende von fünf Meditationen. Und in ihrer Gerichtsbarkeit wiederhergestellt, zwingen sie (d. h. die Sachen) uns auf eine andere Weise zu denken was der Verstand allein zu fassen ersonnen hat. Cette interrogation est celle qui met à jour la difficulté d'un commencement proprement et seulement humain de la réflexion. This article attempts to grasp the relationship between the film Queen Lear and élan vital drawing on the kinship of life as a creative evolution with art as a free act, which was established by Henri Bergson. According to Bergson, the élan vital, as the creative force of life, which is in a state of constant change and formation, is an invisible bond that passes through all living things. It is a free and creative flow. The qualities of élan vital, (...) opening a door to aesthetic comprehension and helping us to gain a deeper understanding as to the relationship between artistic creation and life, trigger our conceptions about cinema. In this context, the film Queen Lear, which creates an aesthetic experience concerning the change and the transformation proceeded by élan vital, is discussed with the guidance of the intuition method and the cinephilosophical approach. Intuition is a method that offers a holistic insight that captures the unique and inexpressible within the subject; the cinephilosophical approach has also enabled the film to move forward and interact with it. Queen Lear makes the élan vital visible and palpable as the peasant women who do theater; as the director and the film. The film deals with the élan vital against the limits, inertia and habits imposed by social conditions, by focusing on the process, not the end, but the being, flow and change. The film joining the permanent flow between past, present and future, reveals the movement in duration. Making the transference movement of vital impetus between individuals and facts visible, turns the film into a transitional space. Images oscillating between women’s life, acting and the staging process of the play, higlights the production process of the film. At the same time they make the coexistence and relationality of life obvious. Consequently, as a living tissue that stimulates intuition, the film motivates to participate in the creative effort of the director. Bringing the audience closer to the direct vision of the reality, the film makes the audience feel the being and real movement in life. (shrink)

Contemporary debates on freedom traverse questions concerning metaphysics, the mind/body relationship, evolution, morality, and religion. Throughout his life, the French philosopher Henri Bergson dealt with these questions from the perspective of time, believing that spatializing these problems led to inadequate solutions. That freedom was a centralizing concern in his oeuvre can be demonstrated in the way he approached these questions in challenging determinism, materialism, mechanism, and finalism. Bergson studies, despite noting the importance of freedom for Bergson, have focussed on intuition (...) and duration as his seminal contributions. Bergson himself never thematized freedom in any specific way, but by working with a positive conception of freedom, as a creation of the new within the fiow of duration, freedom can be seen as a centralizing motif in his work. By clarifying the nature of freedom and its centrality, the ground can be cleared for a Bergsonian intervention into contemporary debates on freedom. (shrink)

Introduction to the first special issue of Bergsoniana, a new journal in Bergson studies.

During the first quarter of the twentieth century, the French philosopher Henri Bergson became an international celebrity, profoundly influencing contemporary intellectual and artistic currents. While Bergsonism was fashionable, L. Susan Stebbing, Bertrand Russell, Moritz Schlick, and Rudolf Carnap launched different critical attacks against some of Bergson’s views. This book examines this series of critical responses to Bergsonism early in the history of analytic philosophy. Analytic criticisms of Bergsonism were influenced by William James, who saw Bergson as an ‘anti-intellectualist’ ally of (...) American Pragmatism, and Max Scheler, who saw him as a prophet of Lebensphilosophie. Some of the main analytic objections to Bergson are answered in the work of Karin Costelloe-Stephen. Analytic anti-Bergsonism accompanied the earlier refutations of idealism by Russell and Moore, and later influenced the Vienna Circle’s critique of metaphysics. It eventually contributed to the formation of the view that ‘analytic’ philosophy is divided from its ‘continental’ counterpart. (shrink)

In Bergson and Intensive Magnitude: Dismantling his Critique, Florian Vermeiren argues that Bergson’s critique of intensive magnitude in Time and Free Will is inconsistent with his later philosophy, and even inconsistent with the role of a “difference in degrees of freedom” in Time and Free Will. I argue that it is rather Vermeiren’s analysis which mischaracterizes Bergson’s critique and therefore the interpretation of an inconsistency cannot stand. In the first two sections I reevaluate Bergson’s critique, showing what, according to Bergson, (...) are the good and bad senses of intensity, and how this critique allowed Bergson to institute a new conception of difference as expressed in concrete continuity. In the final section I examine the importance of infinitesimal thought in Bergson’s good sense of intensity. (shrink)

Bergson was a pre-eminent European philosopher of the early twentieth century and his work covers all major branches of philosophy. In this work I propose a theory of evolution as a process of unfolding. This theory is based on four logically concatenated principles. The principle of evolutionary order establishes that the more complex cannot be generated from the simpler. The principle of origin establishes that there must be a maximum complexity that originates the others by logical deduction. Finally, the principle of unfolding and the principle of actualization guarantee the development of the evolutionary process from the simplest to the most (...) complex. These logical principles determine the existence of a virtual ideological matrix that contains the sequence of the preformed and folded morphogenetic fields. In this manner, the evolutionary process consists of the sequential unfolding and actualization of these fields, which is motorized by a process of teleologization carried out by the opening consciousness of the forms included in the fields of the ideological matrix. This theory leads to a radical change of perspective regarding the materialist worldview, and places life at the center of the evolutionary process as an activity carried out by a consciousness that seeks to fulfill a purpose by actualizing its own potentialities. Though scholarship has explored Karin Costelloe-Stephen’s contributions to the history of psychoanalysis, as well as her relations to the Bloomsbury Group, her philosophical work has been almost completely ignored. This paper will examine her debate with Bertrand Russell over his criticism of Bergson. Costelloe-Stephen had employed the terminology of early analytic philosophy in presenting a number of arguments in defence of Bergson’s views. Costelloe-Stephen would object, among other things, to Russell’s use of an experiment which, as she points out, was (...) first conducted by Carl Stumpf. Russell appeals to Stumpf's experiment in his attempt to prove that sense data are terms in logical relations, a thesis presupposed by the project of logical analysis outlined in Our Knowledge of the External World. A reformulated version of Costelloe-Stephen's argument put forth by this paper shows that Russell's argument fails to provide adequate proof for his thesis. Further modifications of the argument can also address a reconstruction (based on contemporary reports) of Russell's reply to Costelloe-Stephen. In his reply, Russell would use, already in 1914, the term ‘analytic philosophy’ in contrasting his and Moore’s approach to a continental one, exemplified by Bergson and Costelloe-Stephen. (shrink)

I attend to the temporal schema of open/closed by examining its elaboration in Bergson's philosophy and critically parsing the possibilities for its destabilization. Though Bergson wrote in a colonial context, this context barely receives acknowledgement in his work. This obscures the uncomfortable resonances between Bergson's late work, The Two Sources of Morality and Religion, and the temporal narratives that justify French colonialism. Given Bergson's uptake by philosophers, such as Gilles Deleuze, and by contemporary feminist and political theorists (especially “new materialists”), (...) a critical re-examination is called for. The Two Sources not only introduces a new dichotomy into Bergsonian philosophy—that of open/closed—it puts an end to the movement of duration by defining its possibilities as goals already given in advance. By turning the tools of Bergsonian critique onto The Two Sources, I propose an alternative to the open/closed—that of the “half-open”—creating in this way the conditions for decolonizing duration. This article examines the role of time as a methodological tool and pathological focus of clinical psychiatry and psychology in the first half of the 20th century. Contextualizing ‘psychopathologies of time’ developed by practitioners in Europe and North America with reference to the temporal theories implicit in Freudian psychoanalysis and Henri Bergson’s philosophy of durée, it illuminates how depression, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders such as obsessive-compulsive behaviours and aphasia were understood to be symptomatic of an altered or disturbed ‘time-sense’. Drawing upon a model of temporal synthesis whereby in healthy individuals, a subjective temporal sense was perceived and understood in relation to objective time frameworks, clinicians argued that mentally ill patients were unable to synthesize Ichzeit and Weltzeit, using variations in this disturbance to define specific pathological conditions. Il corso sulla Storia dell'idea di tempo, tenuto al Collège de France nel 1902-1903, per la prima volta tradotto interamente in italiano, è dedicato al concetto di tempo nella storia della filosofia antica e moderna. In queste straordinarie lezioni Bergson si confronta con Platone, Aristotele, Plotino, Galileo, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Newton e Kant. Nel cuore della metafisica occidentale il filosofo francese intravede una fondamentale negazione del tempo, impropriamente considerato come imitazione e riduzione di un’originaria eternità, inattingibile nell’immediato e esperibile solo (...) per il tramite di un apparato simbolico. Alla luce di questa paradossale “falsa partenza” del pensiero occidentale, Bergson indica nella storia della metafisica la costante riproposizione dei suoi errori fondativi; ma vi intravede anche l’inesorabile cammino concettuale che, progressivamente, riconduce il tempo alla sua natura psicologica, quella della durata. Conceived as a fundamentally critical quantity, (the) deviation (clinamen, Abweichung) does not mark mere variation or a purely additional factor. To see it and to acknowledge it therefore means a political work and repeated effort that must be started again and again. -/- Once more, voices are being raised for a final claim to truth and power that in no way correspond to the growing complexity of social conditions. In view of this problem, a figure of thought is needed which (...) can oppose identity-based thinking with an uninterrupted shift. In this sense, Maja Bogumila Hoffmann develops the concept of deviation - by means of reconstructing certain historical philosophies - into a figure that creates difference and is relevant to the present, one that allows the articulation of the unanticipated events of alteration, without drawing from nothing or anticipating teleologically. Additionally supplemented by the absurd play "Meta-Pipton" the philosophical text is both complemented and interrupted by the drama, in order to interrupt it itself, so that something can become something new. We provide a new perspective on the relation between the space of description of an object and the appearance of novelties. One of the aims of this perspective is to facilitate the interaction between mathematics and historical sciences. The definition of novelties is paradoxical: if one can define in advance the possibles, then they are not genuinely new. By analyzing the situation in set theory, we show that defining generic (i.e., shared) and specific (i.e., individual) properties of elements of a (...) set are radically different notions. As a result, generic and specific definitions of possibilities cannot be conflated. We argue that genuinely stating possibilities requires that their meaning has to be made explicit. For example, in physics, properties playing theoretical roles are generic; then, generic reasoning is sufficient to define possibilities. By contrast, in music, we argue that specific properties matter, and generic definitions become insufficient. Then, the notion of new possibilities becomes relevant and irreducible. In biology, among other examples, the generic definition of the space of DNA sequences is insufficient to state phenotypic possibilities even if we assume complete genetic determinism. The generic properties of this space are relevant for sequencing or DNA duplication, but they are inadequate to understand phenotypes. We develop a strong concept of biological novelties which justifies the notion of new possibilities and is more robust than the notion of changing description spaces. These biological novelties are not generic outcomes from an initial situation. They are specific and this specificity is associated with biological functions, that is to say, with a specific causal structure. Thus, we think that in contrast with physics, the concept of new possibilities is necessary for biology. (shrink)

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that adjusting Stump and Kretzmann’s “atemporal duration” with la durée, a key concept in the philosophy of Henri Bergson, can respond to the most significant objections aimed at Stump and Kretzmann’s re-interpretation of Boethian eternity. This paper deals with three of these objections: the incoherence of the notion of “atemporal duration,” the impossibility of this duration being time-like, and the problems involved in conceiving it as being related to temporal duration by a (...) relation of analogy. I conclude that “atemporal duration” — when combined with Bergson’s durée to become an “atemporal durée” — is a coherent understanding of divine eternity. (shrink)

Il concetto di Reale non coincide con la realtà; se l’atteggiamento dell’empirismo tradizionale nei confronti della realtà è infatti un ingenuo realismo, l’empirismo radicale è riuscito, invece, a pensare in maniera rivoluzionaria l’origine trascendentale dell’esperienza ordinariamente intesa e, dunque, la natura virtuale di quell’evento del tutto particolare che, soprattutto con Gilles Deleuze e Jacques Lacan, è il Reale. Più dettagliatamente, l’obiettivo dell’intervento consisterà nell’individuare, nelle prospettive aperte dall’empirismo radicale tra Ottocento e Novecento, una forma di temporalità atopica e “utopica”, che (...) non risponde alla scansione cronologica e all’accumulazione di istanti omogenei, poiché essa si distingue quale condizione di possibilità del tempo che scorre, o per meglio dire, di ciò che nel tempo trascorre. Si tenterà quindi di vedere in che modo, in tale prospettiva, si possa pensare un tempo quale presente assoluto (il tempo bizzarro di quell’evento reale che giunge a coincidere con una vita intera) scisso dalla kinesis aristotelica; un tempo, cioè, quale limite od origine trascendentale dell’esperienza: un presente assoluto in quanto atto in atto del vivente che vive o forse - si tratterà di capirlo attraverso una proposta di riflessione - quella terza sintesi del tempo quale forma pura e vuota del tempo medesimo, così come ebbe a scrivere Gilles Deleuze nel 1968 in Differenza e ripetizione. The history of the writing of philosophy could be seen as divided between two tendencies. One tendency involves a constant reconfiguration of the literary and stylistic elements involved in the way philosophy is written. Examples include most texts in the philosophical canon, from Plato's dialogues, or Aristotle's lecture notes, to Marcus Aurelius's diary, Augustine's confessions, the pseudepigrapha of the Areopagite, Anselm's prayer, Montaigne's essays, Descartes's meditations, Kierkegaard's play with pseudonymy, or Wittgenstein's "remarks."1 In such texts, we find a self-reflective attitude (...) toward the writing of philosophy, where the medium and the message become intriguingly interconnected. The present essay argues that Bergson’s account of the comic can only be fully appreciated when read in conjunction with his later metaphysical exposition of the élan vital in Creative Evolution and then by the account of fabulation that Bergson only elaborates fully three decades later in The Two Sources of Morality and Religion. The more substantive account of the élan vital ultimately shows that, in Laughter, Bergson misses his own point: laughter does not simply serve as a means for (...) correcting human behavior but is rather the élan vital’s vital summons, the demand of life itself, that human beings challenge their obligations, question their societal forms, and thereby create new and, for Bergson, more ideal forms of life and community. This paper draws together as many as possible of the clues and pieces of the puzzle surrounding T. S. Eliot’s “infamous” literary term “objective correlative”. Many different scholars have claimed many different sources for the term, in Pound, Whitman, Baudelaire, Washington Allston, Santayana, Husserl, Nietzsche, Newman, Walter Pater, Coleridge, Russell, Bradley, Bergson, Bosanquet, Schopenhauer and Arnold. This paper aims to rewrite this list by surveying those individuals who, in different ways, either offer the truest claim to being the source of (...) the term, or contributed the most to Eliot’s development of it: Allston, Husserl, Bradley and Bergson. What the paper will argue is that Eliot’s possible inspiration for the term is more indebted to the idealist tradition, and Bergson’s aesthetic development of it, than to the phenomenology of Husserl. "Lezioni di metafisica" presenta tradotti per la prima volta in italiano due cicli di lezioni tenuti da Henri Bergson presso la classe di khâgne del Lycée Henri-IV, tra il 1893 e il 1894. Per la loro collocazione temporale, a cavallo tra gli anni del "Saggio sui dati immediati della coscienza" (1889) e "Materia e memoria" (1896), queste lezioni risultano di straordinario interesse per gli studi sul filosofo francese, che vi sviluppa un serrato confronto con la storia della metafisica moderna e (...) della psicologia. Aristotele, Descartes, Malebranche, Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, Spencer sono presentati e discussi da Bergson, che riflette – con loro e attraverso di loro – sui grandi temi dello spazio, del tempo, della materia, della memoria e dell’individualità. Tra i banchi dell’Henri-IV Bergson mette a punto un vero e proprio studio preparatorio per la sua originale critica al pensiero classico. (shrink)

A proposta deste trabalho é investigar a contribuição da filosofia de Henri Bergson para as discussões atuais sobre a memória. Atualmente, o debate concentra-se entre as teorias causalistas e as teorias simulacionistas acerca da memória. O primeiro grupo defende que entre a representação atual de uma experiência passada e esta experiência, há uma conexão causal. Por outro lado, o segundo grupo entende que a principal contribuição para as representações atuais a respeito de eventos passados surge das condições do momento presente, (...) dispensando a necessidade de uma relação entre a experiência e a representação atual. Henri Bergson, no final do século XIX, apresentou a memória como uma faculdade prática, cuja função é auxiliar na tomada de decisões a partir das informações adquiridas anteriormente. De modo que são as condições do sujeito no momento presente que indicarão quais lembranças serão evocadas. Os conteúdos destas lembranças não são idênticos aos conteúdos do momento em que foram apreendidos, pois as lembranças, na sua concepção, alteram-se ao longo do tempo conforme novas informações são obtidas. Até este ponto, parece haver uma grande aproximação entre a filosofia bergsoniana acerca da memória e a compreensão simulacionista. Contudo, Bergson também entende que a lembrança retida depende da percepção, ocasionando uma representação, que o sujeito teve no momento da experiência, afirmando a existência de uma relação causal entre a representação no momento passado e a representação no momento em que a lembrança é evocada. Portanto, podemos reconhecer aspectos da memória na concepção bergsoniana tanto no modelo causalista, quanto no modelo simulacionista apresentados no debate contemporâneo. A nossa pretensão é, a partir da verificação sobre quais aspectos a filosofia de Bergson se aproxima e se afasta das teorias atuais, reconhecer a quais objeções ela está exposta, bem como que vantagens tem na pesquisa contemporânea em filosofia da memória. Assim como todo estudo relacionado à mente, o trabalho em torno da memória trouxe diversas descobertas e hipóteses no último século, ou seja, o conhecimento a respeito do tema avançou significativamente desde as considerações realizadas por Bergson. Acreditamos que o resgate histórico é importante para evitar a possibilidade de que elementos inclusos em constatações filosóficas mais antigas, e que podem ser de interesse para a pesquisa atual, não sejam vistos. Dividiremos a apresentação deste trabalho em três seções: na primeira, abordaremos as teorias causalista e simulacionista da memória; na segunda, exporemos a filosofia da memória de Bergson; por fim, relacionaremos a compreensão bergsoniana acerca da memória com o debate atual para detectarmos quais aspectos foram derrotados e quais têm se mantido ao longo de todos estes anos após a publicação de Bergson. Tässä tutkielmassa käsittelen Henri Bergsonin (1859–1941) teoksessa L’évolution créatrice (1907) esittelemää analogiaa elämän ja tietoisuuden välillä. Analogian taustalla on tarve aidolle elämän ja muutoksen filosofialle. Bergsonin mukaan filosofian historiassa muutosta on tarkasteltu siihen soveltumattomilla käsitteellisillä välineillä. Tämän vuoksi on kehitettävä uusi filosofinen metodi. Tässä tutkielmassa esitän, että tietoisuuden ja elämän välinen analogia on korvaamaton osa tätä uutta metodia. Bergsonin metodissa analogia tai ”analogiapäättely” (raisonnement par analogie) osoittautuu tärkeäksi välineeksi, jonka pohjalta filosofinen ”sisäinen tieto” ja ymmärrys metafyysisistä tärkeistä aiheista kuten liikkeestä (...) ja muutoksesta mahdollistuu. Tässä tutkielmassa avaan Bergsonin metodia ja hänen käsitystään filosofisen tiedon luonteesta. Taustoitan teoksen L’évolution créatrice sisällöllisiä ja metodologisia lähtökohtia sekä tutkielman puitteita. Tarkastelen minkälaiset tulokulmat ja tarkastelukeinot Bergsonin mukaan soveltuvat elämän filosofiseen tarkasteluun ja millaiset eivät. Lisäksi rekonstruioin myös mallin Bergsonin metodista, jonka lähtökohtana on ennen kaikkea analogia. Tämä mallin pohjalta tarkastelen tietoisuuden ja elämän analogiaa teoksessa L’évolution creatrice. Tarkastelu tapahtuu lähiluvun, Bergsonin ajatusten rekonstruoinnin ja käsitteiden vertailun avulla. Tutkielma osoittaa, että tämä teoksesta löytyvä analogia vastaa Bergsonin analogiaoäättelyyn liittyvää analogiaa. (shrink)

In this paper, I evaluate the work of two contemporary cosmologists, Julian Barbour and Lee Smolin, through the lens of Henri Bergson’s metaphysics of time. Barbour and Smolin center their cosmological systems on their respective philosophical conceptions of time: for Barbour, time is a human illusion that must be eradicated from cosmology; for Smolin, time must be considered a reality of the universe, a force of change that underlies our everyday observations and which not even the laws of physics can (...) escape. Both systems, however, run into dead ends. Barbour cannot escape dealing with observed movement and change and ultimately restricts them to the human brain, where these phenomena are left unexplained; Smolin posits the need for a meta-law that would account for why temporal phenomena unfold as they do, but fails to provide such a law. As I will show, Bergson’s original take on the problem of time has a lot to offer to both sides of the debate. On Barbour’s side, it provides compelling arguments against the latter’s eradication of time, which, if accepted, would invalidate the philosophical assumptions behind his cosmology; on Smolin’s side, Bergson sidetracks the “meta-law” problem and offers a deeper understanding of time than the one presented by Smolin, putting forth a consistent philosophical theory of time which, as I will show, is missing from the latter’s work. Ultimately, my aim is to illustrate, through Bergson’s work, how, without the aid of philosophy, cosmology is likely to keep running into such dead ends. (shrink)

This paper compares Plotinus’s neoplatonic conception and account of time with Bergson’s and Husserl’s phenomenologic conceptions and accounts of it. I argue that despite fundamental differences owing to their respective approaches, their conceptions and accounts are remarkably comparable, especially in considering time to play a fundamental role in the organic unity of our physical environment—in what I characterize also as the continuously and intrinsically connected sequentiality of its events, processes, and constituents—in Plotinus’s case, of our physical environment as such; in (...) In the present study, I will consider the crisis of the movement image, and the emergence of a new type of image, namely, the time image. First, I will analyze certain basic concepts used by Deleuze (1925-1995) and by Bergson (1859- 1941) to understand the new type of image that emerges from an interruption of our natural perception, granting us -by separating ourselves from all our previous experiences- pure optical and sound perceptions. Secondly, I will trace the changes that, both (...) inside and outside cinema, made possible this emergence. Finally, according to the signs of the time-image developed by Deleuze, I will analyze the film Paterson (2016), by Jim Jarmusch. The film, inspired not only by the work of the poet William Carlos Williams (1883-1963), but also by other poets of the New York School, seeks to portray, through visual descriptions, the details of our daily lives. L'influence d’Henri Bergson et de sa pensée sur l’œuvre et l'enseignement du philosophe portugais Leonardo Coimbra (1883 à 1936) a été largement étudiée et discutée. Ce qu’a entrepris Leonardo Coimbra en ce qui concerne la diffusion de la philosophie bergsonienne au Portugal au cours des premières décennies du XXe siècle est également consensuel. Cependant, l'approche qu’un autre philosophe portugais, Delfim Santos (1907-1966), fait à Henri Bergson a été bien moins exploitée. Entre eux, a eu lieu une rencontre physique et intellectuelle (...) dont la trace a perduré au-delà des points communs philosophiques (rappelons que Delfim Santos était lui-même disciple de Leonardo Coimbra). À notre avis, la visite de Delfim Santos à la résidence d’Henri Bergson, en octobre 1935, a symbolisé l’harmonie qui existait entre l’inspiration de la culture philosophique portugaise du début du XXe siècle et l’œuvre bergsonienne. Delfim Santos est celui qui a appris à Bergson comment son œuvre était lue et perçue au Portugal, lui ayant envoyé un exemplaire de l’étude A Filosofia de Henri Bergson [La Philosophie d’Henri Bergson], que Leonardo Coimbra avait publiée quelques mois plus tôt. Nous avons déjà eu l’occasion d'étudier la proximité entre Delfim Santos et Henri Bergson, ainsi que la rencontre qui a réuni les deux hommes à Paris en 1935, en établissant les affinités existantes entre la production philosophique initiale du penseur portugais et la pensée bergsonienne. Dans cette réflexion, nous allons présenter et publier intégralement les deux lettres que Delfim Santos a adressées à Henri Bergson à l'occasion de cette visite. Lettres inédites que nous avons eu l'honneur de découvrir dans la collection, laissée en héritage, du philosophe français, déposée à la Bibliothèque Littéraire Jacques Doucet à Paris. (shrink)

Cet ouvrage aborde la question de la réalité chez Bergson, en profitant de l’élan théorique qui se dégage de Durée et simultanéité, pour étendre l’enquête à d’autres passages canoniques du corpus. La thèse en est que loin de s’identifier à la mobilité ou au mouvant, par-delà la durée et sans même se confondre au réel, c’est la réalité qui se fait au sein de la métaphysique bergsonienne.
