La rencontre entre Bergson et Einstein en 1922 est souvent présentée comme un cas exemplaire d’incompréhension réciproque entre le philosophe et le physicien. Pourtant, la même année, Bergson publiait _Durée et simultanéité_, analyse et interprétation de cette même Relativité. Il serait erroné de présenter Bergson comme le philosophe ignorant des sciences dures. Entre le texte de 1922 de _Durée et simultanéité_ et celui de 1934 du _Nouvel Esprit Scientifique_, il n’y a pas passage d’une interprétation erronée de la Relativité à (...) une intelligence philosophique de ses enjeux. Bergson avait parfaitement compris la Relativité, tout du moins autant que cela se pouvait pour quelqu’un qui n’était pas un physicien et peut-être autant que certains physiciens à la même époque. Si erreurs il y a dans _Durée et simultanéité_, elles reposent sur la démarche philosophique plutôt que sur la non-maîtrise des éléments de physique. Par conséquent, le passage de Bergson à Bachelard, en ce domaine, est bien un renversement dans la démarche philosophique. C’est ce renversement philosophique qu’il s’agit d’expliciter. (shrink)

To hold that artworks are valuable for their own sake—regardless of whatever secondary value they may have, such as entertainment, formation, education, or a pleasurable experience—is to hold that their final worth is not derived from external or secondary ends. I call this collective set of views the end-in-itself view. Nicholas Stang recently leveled a twofold charge of reductio ad absurdum and operating from a double standard against the EI view. In this article, I refute Stang by showing that the (...) charges do not obtain for at least one variation of the EI view that holds artworks to be valuable for their own sake as internally purposive ends-in-themselves. Depuis Galilée et son affirmation que le Grand Livre de la Nature est écrit en langage mathématique, la science a été une mathématisation progressive des données sensibles fournies par l'observation. Malgré la réticence des philosophes à assumer cet état, certains acceptèrent pourtant de passer par ce détour formel de la mathesis. Car il ne s'agissait plus de se livrer aux méditations faciles sur les formes géométriques, mais de se confronter dorénavant à la rudesse abstraite du langage algébrique. Certes, la démarche (...) réserve aussi le plaisir de comprendre et révèle d'autres harmonies. Mais la marche est difficile. On sait combien certains physiciens du XVIIIe siècle ont protesté contre la pénétration de leur discipline par la puissance de l'analyse. Rapidement, nul ne put être physicien qui ne maîtrisait pas le calcul infinitésimal. La chimie, la biologie plus tard, l'information n'ont pas échappé à la mathématisation. Les compositions géométriques, auxquelles Pascal géomètre restait attaché, devaient laisser la place à l'équation différentielle. Le hasard, l'incertitude même n'échappèrent ni au calcul ni à la formule. La science a substitué à l'élégance du discours celle de la preuve, à l'enchaînement des arguments celui des équations. Le sensible, cette présence originaire au monde, ne peut aujourd'hui accéder à l'objectivité qu'au travers de procédures algébriques qui tracent sur sa chair les lignes de force et d'intelligence qui nous en assurent la compréhension. Il y a là tin défi que la science s'occupe à relever depuis plus de trois cents ans. Il faut bien que la philosophie, sur son mode propre, relève à son tour le même défi. A quoi réent les machines? La question peut paraître étrange. C’est cependant une manière d’interroger nos propres rêveries autour des réalisations techniques, en faisant jouer aux machines le rôle de reflet de nos propres existences. A travers de nombreux artifices, dont les machines sont les plus élaborés, nous construisons notre monde, enchevêtrant raison et imaginaire et mêlant utile et gratuit. La machine et ses rêves nous renvoient alors une image éclairée de nous-mêmes. Ce jeu de miroir Ne pose-t-il pas la (...) question de savoir si, au bout de toute philosophique interrogation, nous ne serions pas plutôt des machines rêvant de devenir des humains. Ainsi, cette question ouvre une enquête sur l’imaginaire attaché aux machines, des premiers automates à l’ombre du cyborg, La définition rigoureuse de la machine, tentée en début d’ouvrage, se trouve, au fil des pages, débordée sur les frontières ténues entre raison technicienne et imaginaire. Ces rêveries de la machine ont finalement été prises au sérieux par les artistes, depuis Duchamp et Léger, jusqu’aux formes contemporaine de l’art numérique, en passant par Tinguely et Schöffer. S’intéresser aux rêves des machines, c’est prendre conscience qu’avec elles s’insinuent des parts d’ombre et de lumière. Car le songe ne va jamais sans risque. Humains nous sommes des êtres du désir, mais nous sommes aussi des êtres de l’artifice. C’est sur ce terrain-là que cet ouvrage entraîne notre réflexion, au-delà de l’opposition trop simple entre technologie naïve et technologie paralysante. (shrink)

Aujourd'hui la notion de nature est omniprésente : le mot se trouve au coeur des réflexions écologiques mais sert aussi d'argument publicitaire pour les produits les plus divers de l'industrie agroalimentaire à la cosmétique. Cependant, les usages actuels et multiformes de cette notion se trouvaient déjà dans les débats du siècle des Lumières. Alors que les fondements religieux de la société s'effritaient sous l'effet de la division du christianisme et de la révolution scientifique, la Nature cessait d'être l'oeuvre divine offerte (...) à la contemplation pour devenir l'objet de la science. Elle devint aussi le pivot d'un basculement culturel, social et politique lorsqu'on opposa à la religion révélée la religion naturelle, au droit divin le droit naturel. Si la dialectique entre la raison et la nature ouverte au XVIIIe siècle se poursuit, un retour sur ce thème des Lumières à nos jours éclaire l'actualité de ce début du XXIe siècle. Il est devenu courant de dénigrer la science en l'accusant de tous les maux qui frappent notre société alors même que chacun cherche dans ses applications le confort, le bien être, la santé. Situation paradoxale qui invite à s'interroger sur la place de la démarche scientifique dans la culture d'aujourd'hui en écartant aussi bien les enthousiasmes naïfs que les craintes déraisonnées. Ce travail de réflexion indispensable met en jeu une approche nécessairement pluridisciplinaire où le sociologue aussi bien que le juriste (...) a sa place. Il demande un examen de cas concrets, l'appel à l'approche philosophique aussi bien qu'historique. Il exige peut-être un regard rétrospectif sur la naissance de la science moderne et la définition qu'elle s'est alors donnée de sa mission et de sa finalité. L'ensemble des textes, ici présentés, reprennent un séminaire qui s'est tenu à l'université de Bourgogne sous l'égide de la Maison des Sciences de l'Homme. C'était ouvrir le débat. Abstractabstract:Hegel's end-of-art thesis is arguably the most notorious assertion in aesthetics. I outline traditional interpretive strategies before offering an original alternative to these. I develop a conception of art that facilitates a reading of Hegel on which he is able to embrace three seemingly contradictory theses about art, namely, (i) the end-of-art thesis, (ii) the continued significance of art for its own sake (autonomy thesis), and (iii) the necessity of art for robust knowledge (epistemicnecessity thesis). I argue that Hegel is (...) able to embrace all three theses at once through a conception of the work of art as an internally purposive whole (what I call the "IP View" of art). On the IP View, because of the kind of wholes that artworks are, they (i.a) are valuable for their own sake as ends-in-themselves, (i.b) yield valuable experiences because they are valuable for their own sake, and thereby (i.c) are necessary for robust knowledge. Finally, I suggest that not only does Hegel appear to hold the IP View of art, but also that on such a view, there is a very sensible reason for affirming (one reading of) Hegel's end-of-art thesis as an important means to establishing art's actual significance for robust knowledge against soaring, but unsubstantiable, claims about art's potency with respect to robust knowledge. In his introduction to the General Concept of the Logic, Hegel writes: “What propels the concept onward is the already mentioned negative which it possesses in itself; it is this that constitutes the truly dialectical factor.” Negation is typically regarded as the fundamental engine of Hegel’s Science of Logic and for good reason. I call this the common thesis, although its hues are many. The method can be described as a ‘triplicity of negation’, consisting of (i) content, (ii) negation, and (...) (iii) negation of the negation, or speculative identity. In this article, I defend an interpretation that both affirms and rejects the common thesis. I argue that negation is both central to, yet ultimately wrongly identified as the “engine” of the Logic. I argue that to understand Hegel’s logic of negation, we must keep clearly in view what Hegel calls the scientific status of the Logic, the opening moment of the Logic, and to the concluding moment of negation in the logic of the Idea. Kant calls the Principle of the Synthetic Unity of Apperception the “highest point” to which we “must affix all use of the understanding, even the whole of logic and, after it, transcendental philosophy.” In this article, I offer an original interpretation of this “supreme principle.” My argument is twofold. First, I argue that the common identification of this principle with the “I think” or even the form of the I think misses the basis on which this principle is capable of (...) grounding Kant’s transcendental deduction. It must be understood as a purely formal, transcendental principle. Second, I argue that this highest principle must be understood as a purely formal principle of pure synthesis in order for Kant’s account of the mind to lay valid claim to such spontaneity without invoking the very dogmatic idealism that he critiques. The reduction of this principle to the real I think, or even to the Transcendental Unity of Apperception, undermines the basic distinction on which Kant’s deduction depends. I pay particular attention to important, recent arguments from Longuenesse on the TUA, Williams on the Original Unity of Apperception, Allison and Pollok on the status of a priori principles, and McLear on the claim that unity necessarily presupposes synthesis. Scholarship on German Idealism typically couches the systems of Idealism in terms of a rejection of or departure from Kant's critical philosophy. The few accounts that do look to the positive influence of Kant on the Idealists typically focus on the perceived need among the Idealists to revise Kant's system due to various shortcomings arising from his dualism. This volume seeks to reverse this norm. It does this by bringing together an original set of critical reflections on the ways in (...) which the German Idealists maintain specific and fundamental Kantian qualities in their own systems. At the same time, the aim of this volume is not a reduction of German Idealism to Kant's thought. Instead, this volume highlights a set of core ways in which the German Idealists retain specific, fundamentally Kantian principles and qualities. To that extent, this volume paves the way for new interpretations by laying the ground for identifying those significant components of German Idealism that can defensibly be called "Kantian.". Polish translation of an article by Gérard Chazal, devoted to the relationship of François Dagognet’s philosophy to the work of Gaston Bachelard. The author shows the complexity of this relationship, analyzing it in relation to the philosophy of science, the philosophy of technology and the philosophy of art. In many dimensions Chazal shows that Dagognet was inspired not so much by the letter of Bachelard’s texts as by their spirit, using his methods and concepts in areas that Bachelard (...) was not or only marginally interested in. The article is also an interesting voice in the discussion about the essence of the reception of philosophical concepts and currents. In this aspect author asks about the negation of the source theory in its continuations at the same time asking whether it is not this kind of negative inspiration that best testifies to the vitality of the theory — alive due to constant creative transformations. ZusammenfassungIn diesem Aufsatz wird diskutiert, wie die Erkenntnisse aus Religionspsychologie und Cognitive Science of Religion für die Religionswissenschaft zugänglich werden können. Das geschieht im Rahmen eines transdiziplinären Konzeptes von Religionswissenschaft. Beide individualistischen Zugänge zu Religion\en werden kurz in Bezug auf religionstheoretische Unterschiede und die Gemeinsamkeit im Bereich des kognitionspsychologischen Paradigmas eingeführt. Für die Auseinandersetzung mit der Cognitive Science of Religion wird dargestellt, wie trotz des ontologischen Reduktionismus und in Auseinandersetzung mit dem epistemologischen Reduktionismus ein Bezug zu anderen disziplinären Zugängen der (...) Religionswissenschaft möglich ist. Dabei wird ihr Naturalismus einer Lesart des methodischen Konstruktivismus unterworfen. Es wird gezeigt, wie empirisch überprüfbare Theorien der Cognitive Science of Religion und der Religionspsychologie auf Grundlage der nomothetisch-deduktiven Wissenschaftstheorie weiterentwickelt werden, die Hubert Seiwert und Bretislav Horyna bereits in die Religionswissenschaft eingeführt haben. Insgesamt ist dies ein Vorschlag, sich in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Cognitive Science of Religion nicht so sehr an den Prämissen und Unterschieden aufzuhalten, sondern die psychologische Perspektive als Ergänzung in der Beschreibung und Erklärung von Religion\en zu behandeln. The paper reconciles the sociolinguistic concept of stance and stancetaking and Construction Grammar (CxG); it shows that overlapping allostructions may differ in terms of the stances they convey. Drawing on a corpus study of Wikipedia Talk pages, the paper presents a case study of German discourse management markers such as wo wir gerade dabei sind ‘speaking of which’ or wenn wir schon dabei sind ‘while we’re at it’. By statistically comparing the observed frequencies of the filler items with the expected (...) ones (using Hierarchical Configural Frequency Analysis and Distinctive Collexeme Analysis), I will argue that there are two different collocational types, namely wo wir/ich gerade bei NP sind/bin ‘as we are/I am just at NP’ and wenn wir/du schon bei NP sind/bist ‘as we/you are already at NP’. Both serve as discourse management markers, topic orientation markers in particular, whose purpose it is to shift the topic. They involve the same fixed pattern, combining the same categorical slots. However, they diverge in collocational preferences. I will argue that these collocational preferences are indicative of the stances the allostructions conventionally convey: While the allostruction wo wir/ich gerade PP sind/bin seems to be neutral in terms of stance (face-less stance), wenn wir/du schon PP sind/bist is often used to express negative evaluation of a previous utterance made by an interlocutor, thus marking disalignment. The expression of disalignment seems to be related to the construction’s propensity to reference utterances made by an interlocutor. (shrink)

Nikolaus von Kues veranschaulicht sein metaphysisch-theologisches Prinzip der coincidentia oppositorum anhand geometrischer Konstruktionen. Eine dieser Darstellungen bringt den Beryll ins Spiel. Ich versuche, seine Rolle in Cusanus’ Ausführungen zu klären und Parallelen aufzuzeigen zwischen dem Einsatz dieses Instruments und Strategien der Begriffsbildung in der heutigen Mathematik. Nicolaus of Cusa illustrates his metaphysico-theological principle of ›coincidentia oppositorum‹ by means of geometrical constructions. One of these representations uses a beryl as an auxiliary instrument. In this paper, I attempt to explore the role (...) played by the beryl in Cusanus’ considerations, and to demonstrate some similarities between his use of this instrument and certain strategies in the formation of concepts in modern mathematics. Gerade weil das Bestehen auf Rangordnungen in der heutigen Gesellschaft anstößig und fremd wirkt, ist es lohnenswert, sich ihnen mit Nietzsche neu zu stellen, der sie als sein Problem bezeichnete. Gerade in Ausnahmesituationen rücken Menschen zusammen – eigentlich. Das ist in Zeiten des Coronavirus anders, denn hier gilt das Gebot des „Social Distancing“. Ich möchte die Ambivalenz, die nicht nur in dieser paradoxen Wortkombination zum Ausdruck kommt, sondern auch in der Erfahrung von vielen Menschen, mit Hilfe eines leibphänomenologischen Zugangs näher beleuchten. Dabei untersuche ich, wie sich das spannungsreiche Verhältnis von Nähe und Distanz in Zeiten der Corona-Pandemie in Alltagssituationen sowie in Bildungskontexten zeigt. Darüber hinaus gehe ich der Frage nach, (...) was die Erfahrung des „Social Distancing“ für die Philosophie – nicht nur in Ausnahmesituationen – bedeuten kann, und plädiere dafür, sie als eine Übungsmöglichkeit des Philosophierens zwischen Nähe und Distanz, Körper und Geist, Eigenem und Fremdem sowie Natur und Kultur zu sehen, um auf diese Weise problematischen Extremen auf beiden Seiten zu entgehen. Gerade im Gesundheitswesen ist die Frage nach (Gestaltungs-)Macht heikel. Aber wer anderen Gutes tun möchte, der muss wirksam tätig werden können. Dies beinhaltet immer auch soziale Gestaltungsmacht. Wie gehen Pflegende mit der ihnen übertragenen bzw. auferlegten Macht um? Wie viel Macht ist im Kontext von Medizin, Pflege und Gesundheitssorge nötig? Und wie nehmen die Patientinnen und Patienten sie wahr? *Oft fühlen sich Menschen, die unter einer akuten Krankheit leiden, ohnmächtig. Und so wirkt der Begriff der Macht, den wir oft genug (...) mit Herrschaft und Gewalt verbinden, in einem Bereich, in dem es um Fürsorge und Behandlung geht, merkwürdig fehl am Platz. Gleichwohl bringen Ressourcen wie Wissen und finanzielle Mittel automatisch die Frage nach Macht in der Fürsorge aufs Tapet. Das Buch fragt nach der moralischen Bedeutung von Gestaltungsmacht und sucht das prekäre Verhältnis von Macht und Fürsorge ethisch auszuloten. (shrink)

Als wir bei Sonnenuntergang gerade durch die Herde Nilpferde hindurchfuhren, stand urplötzlich, von mir nicht gesucht, das Wort »Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben« vor mir. Der Pfad im Dickicht war sichtbar geworden. Nun war ich zu der Idee vorgedrungen, in der Welt- und Lebensbejahung und Ethik miteinander enthalten sind. Albert Schweitzer Seit fast 100 Jahren steht der Name Albert Schweitzer für aktives humanitäres Engagement. Dank seiner Philosophie der »Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben«, die er gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Helene Bresslau im Urwaldhospital (...) in Lambarene verwirklichte, gehört er zu den am meisten bewunderten Menschen der Welt. Mit dreißig Jahren ein geachteter Theologe und gefeierter Interpret der Orgelwerke Johann Sebastian Bachs entschloss er sich, noch ein Medizinstudium zu absolvieren, um den Ärmsten der Armen zu helfen. Ernst Luther nähert sich diesem Humanisten mit philosophisch-kritischen Betrachtungen, ordnet dessen Leben und Werk in die Umbrüche seiner Zeit ein und resümiert, was von Schweitzers Gedankengut bewahrt werden sollte.
