    Many democratic countries have failed to stand up to the challenge presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. I argue that the collective response to the pandemic has been incapacitated by an ‘epistemic crisis’, (i.e., a breakdown in the social division of epistemic labor) that led to a failure of citizens’ beliefs to converge towards a shared perception of the situation. My argument is the following: because we are epistemically limited agents (in a sense of our cognitive capacity and motivation), engagement with narrative arts is the optimal way to familiarize ourselves with complex phenomena in the world, such as social injustice, institutional racism, and financial crises. These features are narrative compression, simplified language, engagement with fictional characters, and artistic features. The article consists of three parts: Knowledge and Understanding, Narrative Arts as Epistemic Sources, and Understanding the Financial Crisis of 2007–8 with The Big Short (2015). In the first part, I introduce concepts of knowledge and understanding and explain why they are important for my claim. In the second part, I present my claim and offer arguments for it.     Most discussions of the reproducibility crisis focus on its epistemic aspect: the fact that the scientific community fails to follow some norms of scientific investigation, which leads to high rates of irreproducibility via a high rate of false positive findings. The purpose of this paper is to argue that there is a heretofore underappreciated and understudied dimension to the reproducibility crisis in experimental psychology and neuroscience that may prove to be at least as important as the (...) dimension. This is the communication dimension. The link between communication and reproducibility is immediate: independent investigators would not be able to recreate an experiment whose design or implementation were inadequately described. I exploit evidence of a replicability and reproducibility crisis in computational science, as well as research into quality of reporting to support the claim that a widespread failure to adhere to reporting standards, especially the norm of descriptive completeness, is an important contributing factor in the current reproducibility crisis in experimental psychology and neuroscience.
