This paper tests whether individual perceptions of markets as good or bad for a public good is correlated with the propensity to report gaps in willingness to pay and willingness to accept revealed within an incentive compatible mechanism. Identifying people based on a notion of market affinity, we find a substantial part of the gap can be explained by controlling for some variables that were not controlled for before. Suszko’s problem is the problem of finding the minimal number of truth values needed to semantically characterize a syntactic consequence relation. Suszko proved that every Tarskian consequence relation can be characterized using only two truth values. Malinowski showed that this number can equal three if some of Tarski’s structural constraints are relaxed. By so doing, Malinowski introduced a case of so-called mixed consequence, allowing the notion of a designated value to vary between the premises and the conclusions of an argument. (...) In this article we give a more systematic perspective on Suszko’s problem and on mixed consequence. First, we prove general representation theorems relating structural properties of a consequence relation to their semantic interpretation, uncovering the semantic counterpart of substitution-invariance, and establishing that mixed consequence is fundamentally the semantic counterpart of the structural property of monotonicity. We use those theorems to derive maximum-rank results proved recently in a different setting by French and Ripley, as well as by Blasio, Marcos, and Wansing, for logics with various structural properties. We strengthen these results into exact rank results for nonpermeable logics. We discuss the underlying notion of rank, and the associated reduction proposed independently by Scott and Suszko. As emphasized by Suszko, that reduction fails to preserve compositionality in general, meaning that the resulting semantics is no longer truth-functional. We propose a modification of that notion of reduction, allowing us to prove that over compact logics with what we call regular connectives, rank results are maintained even if we request the preservation of truth-functionality and additional semantic properties. It is based on this “new wave” in contemporary African philosophy scholarship that I provide some critical comments over Agada’s book emConsolationism and Comparative Philosophy: Beyond Universalism and Particularism./em Whereas the originality and depth of Agada is not in doubt regarding his idea of Mood, the ultimate category of his ontology, I level four objections against the metaphysical (...) system. This article examines the controversy that has arisen in the last decade about Michel Foucault’s supposed “fascination” with neoliberalism, especially around the contributions of Daniel Zamora and Michael C. Behrent. Their theses are contrasted with Foucauldian writings and reconsidered from a different approach to the historical, political and intellectual context of the French 1970s, which, in our opinion, shows a lack of complexity in the studies of those authors. Thus, this paper tries to establish that the limitations of Michel Foucault’s (...) approach to neoliberalism do not respond to any sort of neoliberal “sympathies”, but to another kind of problems-mainly analytical-. In the constitution of contemporary image theory, Ludwig Wittgenstein’s philosophy has undoubtedly become a major conceptual reference. Rather than trying to establish what Wittgenstein’s own image theory could possibly look like, this paper would like to critically assess some of the advantages as well as some of the quandaries that arise when using Wittgenstein’s concept of ‘seeing-as’ for addressing the plural realities of images. While putting into evidence the tensions that come into play when applying what was initially a theory (...) of the gaze to a theory of the image, the paper shall subsequently discuss three modes of iconic vision: the propositional seeing-as, the projective seeing-in and the medial seeing-with. El presente artículo analiza el curso que Michel Foucault dictó en 1973 en el Collège de France titulado La sociedad punitiva. Mediante una reconstrucción conceptual y contextual del curso trataremos de evidenciar su deuda con la perspectiva marxista. Esta deuda da forma a un análisis que atiende a la especificidad de las relaciones de poder, pero –en consonancia con el planteamiento de buena parte de los movimientos radicales y contraculturales de la época– las vincula con el desarrollo de la sociedad (...) capitalista. Crítica de la economía política, genealogía de la moral y análisis del poder constituyen, así, los tres ejes desde los que se propone una historia de la sociedad disciplinaria sensiblemente diferente de la que el propio Foucault ofrecerá solo dos años después en Vigilar y castigar. De este modo, el curso de 1973 evidencia el fundamento marxista de las investigaciones que Foucault desarrolla en la primera mitad de la década de los setenta y cuyo abandono impactará enormemente en su obra alrededor del gobierno y el cuidado de sí. Resumo: Este artigo visa a esclarecer o uso concreto que Nietzsche faz do vocabulário biológico em sua obra. Em vez de conceber a biologia como a soma indiferenciada das ciências da vida, o que é um anacronismo em vista da situação fragmentada dessas ciências na segunda metade do século XIX, levo em consideração o trabalho de Lynn Nyhart sobre a ascensão da perspectiva biológica na Alemanha, para evidenciar o sentido mais estreito no qual Nietzsche fala de “biologia”. A primeira parte (...) do artigo identifica os interlocutores que Nietzsche caracteriza explicitamente como “biólogos”. Depois, tento determinar o tipo de biologia evolucionária que está em jogo, para poder, num último momento, explorar as ramificações epistemológicas e estéticas do discurso biológico nietzschiano.: This paper aims at clarifying the concrete use Nietzsche makes of the biological vocabulary in his work. Instead of conceiving biology as the undifferentiated sum of the life sciences, which is an anachronism in view of the fragmented situation of these sciences in the second half of the 19th century, I take into consideration Lynn Nyhart’s work on the rise of the biological perspective in Germany, to highlight the narrower sense in which Nietzsche speaks of “biology”. The first part of the paper identifies the interlocutors Nietzsche explicitly characterizes as “biologists”. I then try to ascertain the type of evolutionary biology that is at stake, to be able, in a last moment, to explore the epistemological and aesthetic ramifications of the Nietzschean biological discourse. This article argues that Bowers and Paternoster’s emphasis on a moral community marks an important step towards a more ethical and effective approach to anti-doping. However, it also argues that the authors’ proposed strategies undermine their stated goal of effectively engaging athletes as partners in anti-doping efforts and raise ethical concerns. Their proposed emphasis on exploiting shaming as a punishment and their general view of athletes as adversaries fosters mistrust between athletes and those who enforce the anti-doping rules. Instead, this (...) article describes a model for empowering athletes as stakeholders in anti-doping policy as a means to provide anti-doping rules with increased moral legitimacy among athletes. Resumo: Este artigo procura responder à pergunta se Marx possui de fato um método dialético próprio. A argumentação está dividida em três partes. Na primeira, procura-se mostrar que as críticas de Marx ao método absoluto de Hegel poderiam ser tomadas por este como meras explicações sobre o seu próprio método. Na segunda parte, tecem-se algumas considerações sobre o que é o método dialético de Hegel, a partir das figuras da imediaticidade e da imediaticidade mediada. Na última parte, apresentam-se três exemplos (...) de como Marx pratica, em sua crítica à Economia Política, exatamente aquilo que criticou no método dialético de Hegel.: This paper attempts to answer the question whether Marx really has an own dialectic method. My argument is divided into three parts. In the first, I try to show that Marx’s criticism of Hegel’s absolute method could be taken by Hegel as mere explanations of his own method. In the second part, I offer some considerations about what Hegel’s dialectical method is based on the figures of immediacy and mediated immediacy. In the last part, I present three examples of how Marx practices in his critique of Political Economy exactly what he criticized in Hegel’s dialectic method. (shrink)

This article examines new patterns of workplace inequality that emerge as transgender people are incorporated into the global labor market. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 41 transgender call center employees in the Philippines, I develop the concept “purple-collar labor” to describe how transgender workers—specifically trans women—are clustered, dispersed, and segregated in the workplace and how their patterned locations in social organizational structures serve a particular value-producing function. These patterned inclusions, I argue, come with explicit and implicit interactional expectations about how (...) “trans” should be put to work in the expansion and accumulation of global capital. In this way, the study examines the production and extraction of queer value and the folding of trans women’s gendered performances into commercial exchange. Data show how the affective labor of transgender employees is used to help foster productivity, ease workplace tensions, and boost employee morale. This study of transgender employment experiences opens new lines of inquiry for understanding gender inequalities at work, and it builds on scholarship that combines political economy approaches with transgender studies. English summary: Nietzsche's work does not fit into readily defined categories or disciplinary fields. Rejecting definitive truths and assumptions, he nourished his philosophical explorations with constant experimentation, reading widely on texts as varied as Greek philosophy, Darwinian evolution, thermodynamic cosmology, and the history of religion. Through this multiplication of perspectives, Nietzsche developed a philosophy of culture that sought to raise mankind up beyond the possibilities of Judeo-Christian values. Although his philosophy would later be misappropriated for National Socialism, other much nobler (...) readers, such as Heidegger and Foucault, would find value in his works. Une problematique essentielle se dessine cependant a travers ces multiples experimentations: c'est celle d'une philosophie de la culture, qui aspire a elever l'homme - tant au sens d'un elevage zoologique que d'une elevation de valeur - pour en faire un etre plus epanoui et plus puissant qu'il ne l'a ete jusqu'a present sous l'emprise des valeurs judeo chretiennes. Nietzsche propose ainsi une veritable transvaluation de toutes les valeurs, qui se veut tout autre chose qu'un retour a la barbarie des origines. L'auteur d'Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra a conscience, ce faisant, de s'affirmer comme un philosophe dangereux. Mais il pense que la creation est fondamentalement indissociable de la destruction, voyant dans cette idee le secret du dionysiaque et donc de la tragedie grecque. Les posterites de l'oeuvre de Nietzsche confirment son caractere a la fois dangereux et fecond. On ne saurait passer sous silence l'appropriation nazie, qui oblige a s'interroger sur ce qui, chez Nietzsche, pouvait preter le flanc a un tel detournement. Mais pour autant, il serait injuste de reduire Nietzsche a cette tragique caricature, alors qu'il a trouve en Heidegger, Deleuze ou encore Foucault des lecteurs bien plus dignes de lui. (shrink)

Malgré son discours critique bien connu sur les « généalogistes de la morale anglais », Nietzsche semble avoir pris très au sérieux l’essai de Walter Bagehot intitulé Physics and Politics, qu’il a découvert en traduction allemande au cours de la première moitié de la décennie 1870. Le présent article propose d’abord une brève présentation de l’ouvrage de Bagehot. J’étudie ensuite la réception nietzschéenne de ce livre dans Schopenhauer éducateur (1874) et surtout dans la Généalogie de la morale (1887). Ce faisant, (...) je soutiens que le lamarckisme culturel de Bagehot a non seulement influencé durablement la philosophie nietzschéenne de l’élevage (Züchtung), mais qu’il constitue vraisemblablement une source méconnue des réflexions du deuxième traité de la Généalogie sur la « conscience » et la « mauvaise conscience ». Since special relativity and quantum mechanics, information has become a central concept in our description and understanding of physical reality. This statement may be construed in different ways, depending on the meaning we attach to the concept of information, and on our ontological commitments. One distinction is between mind-independent ‘Shannon information’ and a traditional conception of information, connected with meaning and knowledge. Another, orthogonal, distinction is between information considered as a fundamental physical entity, and an ontological agnosticism where physics is (...) about our information of the world rather than about the world itself. Combinations of these lead to various possibilities. I argue that adopting mind-independent information as ontologically fundamental is a hitherto undefended position with important advantages. This position appears similar to Floridi’s informational structural realism, but is fundamentally different. Rather than ‘epistemically indistinguishable differences’, it requires a robust conception of information as consisting of readable and interpretable messages. (shrink)

Dans le dialogue philosophique sur le Maitre, Augustin soutient devant son fils Adeodat la these qu'aucun homme ne peut rien apprendre au moyen du langage. Selon lui, loin de montrer ce qu'ils signifient, les signes ne font qu'avertir celui qui les percoit de consulter ses sens, sa memoire ou le Maitre interieur, c'est-a-dire la verite, qui enseigne immediatement a l'esprit tout ce qu'il peut comprendre. Le present commentaire s'attache a eclairer la demonstration d'Augustin en la situant dans l'ensemble de son (...) oeuvre. Il etudie ses emprunts aux principales doctrines antiques de la signification (grammaire ancienne, semantique stoicienne, critique sceptique des signes) et montre comment ceux-ci sont refondus dans une oeuvre originale, qui est sans doute le chef-d'oeuvre de l'Antiquite sur le langage. Au-dela de l'horizon antique, la perspective s'ouvre a des thematiques contemporaines. L' image augustinienne du langage presentee par Wittgenstein au debut des Recherches philosophiques sert de modele pour apprecier la pertinence de la critique du pouvoir des signes menee dans le Maitre, ou l'on voit Augustin s'interroger sur la signification des parties du discours, mettre en evidence la reflexivite du langage et delimiter le domaine de competence des mots et de la definition ostensive. The search for identity is at the core of African political philosophy. This has moved from its essentialist enclave to recent calls for cosmopolitanism or Afropolitanism in the African context. This article takes a critical look at Afropolitanism. While it accepts that Afropolitanism is important because of the nature of modern society, it queries Afropolitanism in the context of the peculiar nature of African nations that are still mere geographical territories in search of national identities. Hence, it argues that Afropolitanism (...) alone will not be enough as a basis to construct African identity, rather it may worsen bourgeoning African identity crises. (shrink)
