At the intersection of science studies and higher education research, this contribution looks at the way in which the requirements of universities as organizations release development dynamics in academic disciplines and it analyses the interaction between discipline and organization. We will analyse German educational science, bearing in mind it is an example of disciplines that are fractured and consequently have little consensus in terms of fundamental theories and basic concepts. Firstly, we take on a quantitative approach and analyse the changes (...) in degree courses at the structural level and the symbolic boundaries or conceptual distinctions following the transition to the Bachelor and Master system. Secondly, we take a close look at the negotiating processes and practices, as well as at the disciplinary orientations that determine these boundary shifts, using a qualitative approach that focuses on the actors. In group discussions with representatives of the German educational science at different universities it stood out that actors involved in course design are compelled to find an equilibrium between the demands of the discipline and those of the organization, and do so in very different ways. Finally, we discuss the extent to which close interaction between higher education reforms and academic disciplines can be figured out, particularly for disciplines seen as fractured and which do not have consensual common disciplinary standards. In this paper I will show that you can distinguish two main types of argumentation in respect to feeling and emotions in the philosophy of religion of William James, which point to two different kind of criticism of religion. Especially in his early works, James argues that you may lawfully adopt religious beliefs on the basis of passional grounds. This argumentation points to a type of criticism of religion, which denies that beliefs based on such emotional grounds may be justified. (...) In his famous study The Varieties of Religious Experience, James defines religious experience as an experience of inner conversion, where the individual gets in touch with a higher self. The philosophical interpretation of religious experience points not at least to a type of criticism of religion in the tradition of Ludwig Feuerbach, which is known as the theory of projection. Schneider und Ives Radrizzani unter Mitwirkung von Hans Georg von Manz edierten kritischen Ausgabe des Werks von Johann Gottlieb Fichte in der Fichte-Gesamtausgabe der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften erschienen. Erscheinungsjahr ist 1999, Erscheinungsort wie zuvor Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt bei Frommann-Holzboog. Der Band enthält Fichtes philosophische Leistung aus dem Jahr 1811. Primär zu nennen sind »Die Thatsachen des Bewussstseyns«, welche Fichte als Einleitung in die Wissenschaftslehre im Wintersemester 1810/11 gelesen hat, (...) die Wissenschaftslehre von 1811, welche Fichte vom 30. Januar bis 6. April vorgetragen hatte, sowie die populären »Vorlesungen über die Bestimmung des Gelehrten«, von denen anzunehmen ist, Fichte habe sie im Frühjahr 1811 gelesen. Fichte hat »Ueber die Bestimmung des Gelehrten« im Verlauf seiner Lehrtätigkeit dreimal im Rahmen seiner Vorlesungszyklen vorgetragen: ein erstes Mal zu Beginn seiner Lehrtätigkeit in Jena 1794/95. Hiervon sind fünf Vorlesungen in GA I,3 von 1966 wiedergegeben, eine weitere Gruppe um das Thema »Ueber den Unterschied des Geistes und des Buchstabens in der Philosophie« findet sich in GA II,3. Die genauen Daten sind nicht bekannt. Reinhard Lauth verweist im Vorwort zum Text auf ein längeres Schreiben des Studenten August Twesten, vom 28. Mai 1811, worin dieser berichtet, er höre bei Fichte »Reden über das Wesen des Gelehrten«, sowie auf die »Miszellen für die Neueste Weltkunde« vom 25. Mai 1811, wo es heißt: »Unsere Universität hat mit diesem Semester bedeutenden Zuwachs erhalten: man zählt jetzt beinahe vierhundert Studenten, grösstentheils Mediziner. Hufeland lieset über seine Makrobiotik, und Fichte über die Bestimmung des Gelehrten«. Beispiel für künstlerische Tätigkeiten pflegen für Fichte die der Dichter, der Maler, der Bildhauer zu sein, in den Vorlesungen über die Bestimmung des Gelehrten ist es ebenfalls die der Bildhauer. In den Vorlesungen von 1811 hingegen ist es der Musiker, welcher mit dem Denkkünstler verglichen wird: »so jemand in der Musik es zur Meisterschaft bringen will, so bedarf er dazu zu allererst der innern Erregbarkeit durch die Form des Uebersinnlichen, wodurch seine Kunst erst zur Kunst wird«. Nun verweist Reinhard Lauth darauf, daß Fichte vom 4. bis 30. August 1811 in Teplitz zur Badekur weilte, wo vom 4. August bis zum 18. September auch Ludwig van Beethoven sich aufhielt und möglicherweise Fichte musikalisch beeindruckte. Daß es zu einer persönlichen Begegnung gekommen sei, läßt sich jedoch dokumentarisch nicht nachweisen. Als Einführung in die Wissenschaftslehre las Fichte im Wintersemester 1810/11 »Ueber das Studium der Philosophie« und »Ueber die Thatsachen des Bewusstseyns«. Wie Reinhard Lauth rekonstruiert hat, hatte Fichte vom 22. bis 26. Oktober 1810 »Ueber das Studium der Philosophie« gelesen. Der Vorlesungstext ist nicht erhalten. Vom 29. Oktober 1810 bis 14. Januar 1811 trug Fichte erstmals »Ueber die Thatsachen des Bewusstseyns« vor. Diese Vorlesung übernahm, wie Reinhard Lauth im Vorwort erläutert, in der Spätphase Fichtes zusammen mit den Ausführungen über »Transzendentale Logik« die Rolle der Jenaer und Erlanger Vorlesungen über Logik und Metaphysik. Sie sollte auf die genetische Darstellung der Phänomene des Bewußtseins in der WL vorbereiten. Durch Fichte von Beginn an zum Druck bestimmt, erschien die Vorlesungsreihe erstmals nach seinem Tod 1817 in der Cottaischen Buchhandlung. 1845 veröffentlichte auch Immanuel Hermann Fichte in Band 2, S. 534–691 der von ihm herausgegebenen »sämmtlichen Werke« die »Thatsachen« von 1810/11 ein zweites Mal, allerdings nicht ohne unausgewiesene Veränderung ihrer Gliederung, da, wie er ausführte: »das Manuscript, wiewohl ursprünglich für den Druck bestimmt, dennoch die letzte Hand und Feile vom Verfasser nicht erhalten hatte«. Band II,12 der Akademie-Ausgabe enthält nun auch erstmals eine gedruckte Veröffentlichung der WL 1811. Immanuel Hermann Fichte hatte sie in seiner Ausgabe von des Vaters Werken nicht berücksichtigt, ja, nicht einmal erwähnt. Die von fünfundsiebzig Hörern besuchte Vorlesung hatte am 30. Januar begonnen und wurde nach 25 Vorlesungsstunden am 6. April 1811 abgeschlossen. Da sie sorgfältiger ausgeschrieben ist als die späteren und nicht zuletzt als die von 1810, vermutet Reinhard Lauth - gestützt auch auf das Zeugnis von Fichtes Hörer August Twesten –, daß Fichte an eine Veröffentlichung gedacht habe. Twesten, selbst kein schlechter Kopf, hatte 1810 bis 1812 in Berlin studiert. Die These einer geplanten Veröffentlichung wird unterstützt durch das Faktum, daß Fichte schon zum Abschluß seines Vortrags der Wissenschaftslehre 1810 für seine Hörer »Die Wissenschaftslehre in ihrem Umriss« publiziert hatte und daß auch die »Thatsachen des Bewusstseyns« von 1810/11 zum Druck bestimmt waren. Auch ist die WL 1811 sehr viel ausgefeilter und sorgsamer ausgearbeitet als die vorangehende WL 1810, die ein bloßes Vorlesungsskelett darstellt, teilweise aus bloßen Stichworten bestehend. Es gibt somit berechtigten Anlaß zu vermuten, daß Fichte wieder an eine breitere Öffentlichkeit dringen wollte. Zum Inhalt der Wissenschaftslehre von 1811 wäre zu sagen, daß sie von drei Grundthemen dominiert wird: von dem der »Freiheit«, dem der »Fünffachheit« möglicher Standpunkte und dem des »Schemas«. Obgleich „Freiheit“ schon gedankliches Zentrum des frühen Fichte ist, so kommt es doch in seinen ersten Veröffentlichungen so wenig zum Ausdruck, daß Fichte sich in seinem Brief an Reinhold vom 8. Januar 1800 aus einer Position der Defensive zu betonen veranlaßt sieht: »Mein System ist vom Anfange bis zum Ende nur eine Analyse des Begriffs der Freiheit«. Schon in der WL 1801/02 spielt dieser Begriff dann eine bedeutende Rolle. In der WL 1811 hingegen wird der Begriff der Freiheit zentral und zwar im Zusammenhang mit einem zweiten: dem Begriff des „Reflexes“. Es gilt: Die absolute Sichvollziehung der Freiheit bringt das Faktum des Wissens zum Vorschein. Das Wissen führt - - seinen Reflex bei sich: es ist ein sich als Denken verstehenden Denken. Erst so entsteht Bewußtsein. Denn Denken ohne Sich-Sehen wäre ein Wissen ohne Licht, ein Bewußtsein ohne Gehalt. Von „Reflex“ war auch schon in der WL 1801/02 im Zusammenhang mit der »intellektuellen Anschauung« die Rede: »Der Sprung durch das absolute, der Reflex, das für ich seyn desselben, ist in der Mitte«. Dagegen wird die »intellektuelle Anschauung« - noch zentral in der WL 1810 - in der WL 1811 überhaupt nicht mehr genannt. Sie wird verdrängt durch den „Reflex“. In der Wissenschaftslehre 1811 findet also eine gewissen »Intellektualisierung« statt: Es gibt nicht mehr einerseits Anschauung, andererseits Denken, wie in den frühen Fassungen der Wissenschaftslehre, sondern es ist der Verstand, der »Bilder« entwirft. Befahigung ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu einem zentralen Begriff sowohl in der politischen Philosophie als auch in der Sozialpolitik geworden. Was damit gemeint ist, ist freilich umstritten. Der Band versucht, die Bedeutungsgehalte des Befahigungsbegriffs und daruber seine Leistungsfahigkeit fur die sozialphilosophische und die politische Diskussion zu klaren. Dabei bleibt die Autorin nicht bei der Beschaftigung mit dem Capabilities Approach nach Martha Nussbaum und Amartya Sen stehen, sondern analysiert vor allem die Rezeptionen des Befahigungsansatzes und zwar speziell im Bereich der (...) theologischen Ethik. Als zentrales Problem sowohl des Capabilities Approach als auch der theologischen Ethik wird deren Liberalismusfahigkeit herausgearbeitet. Eine Auseinandersetzung daruber, wie und ob mit dem Befahigungskonzept sozialethisch ein "liberales Minimum", durch das die Freiheit jedes und jeder einzelnen gewahrleistet werden kann, ist das Ergebnis der Untersuchung. French philosopher Louis Pierre Althusser (1918 -1990) helped define the politico-theoretical conjuncture of pre- and post-1968. Today, there is a recrudescence of interest in his thought, especially in light of his later work, published in English as Philosophy of the Encounter (Verso, 2006). This has led to renewed debates on the reformulation of conflicting notions of materialism, on the event as both philosophical concept and political construction, and on the nature of politics and the political. Recent research on moral decision-making has suggested that many common moral judgments are based on immediate intuitions. However, some individuals arrive at highly counterintuitive utilitarian conclusions about when it is permissible to harm other individuals. Such utilitarian judgments have been attributed to effortful reasoning that has overcome our natural emotional aversion to harming others. Recent studies, however, suggest that such utilitarian judgments might also result from a decreased aversion to harming others, due to a deficit in empathic concern and social (...) emotion. The present study investigated the neural basis of such indifference to harming using functional neuroimaging during engagement in moral dilemmas. A tendency to counterintuitive utilitarian judgment was associated both with ‘psychoticism’, a trait associated with a lack of empathic concern and antisocial tendencies, and with ‘need for cognition’, a trait reflecting preference for effortful cognition. Importantly, only psychoticism was also negatively correlated with activation in the subgenual cingulate cortex (SCC), a brain area implicated in empathic concern and social emotions such as guilt, during counterintuitive utilitarian judgments. Our findings suggest that when individuals reach highly counterintuitive utilitarian conclusions, this need not reflect greater engagement in explicit moral deliberation. It may rather reflect a lack of empathic concern, and diminished aversion to harming others. (shrink)

This research investigates how consumers’ ethical brand perceptions are affected by differentially valenced information. Drawing on literature from person-perception formation and using a sequential, mixed method design comprising qualitative interviews and two experiments with a national representative population sample, our findings show that only when consumers perceive their judgment of a brand’s ethicality to be pertinent, do they process information holistically and in line with the configural model of impression formation. In this case, negative information functions as a diagnostic cue (...) to form an unethical brand perception, irrespective of other positive information at hand. However, in the case where processing relevance of the un/ethical information provided is low, brand perception formation is algebraic, in which case positive information can counterbalance and neutralize the detrimental impact of brand misbehavior. Our findings extend existing research on consumer perceived ethicality as well as consumer reactions to corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiatives, which has so far assumed the asymmetric impact of negative information on ethical perceptions and consumer attitudes to be prevalent. We derive a range of academic and managerial implications and present a number of important avenues for future research. (shrink)

Academic publications of empirical public health research often entail recommendations for moral action that address practitioners and policy makers. These recommendations are regularly based on implicit moral judgments with the underlying reasons not explicitly stated. In this paper, we elaborate on the moral relevance of such judgments and the need to explain them in order to account for academic argumentation. We argue for an explicit reporting of bridge principles to increase the transparency of the reporting of public health research. The (...) reporting of bridge principles can inform readers, support them in understanding the relationship between empirical and normative claims in a specific paper, and may pave new ways for the rigorous reporting of empirical research that has moral implications. Although religious belief is often claimed to help with physical ailments including pain, it is unclear what psychological and neural mechanisms underlie the influence of religious belief on pain. By analogy to other top-down processes of pain modulation we hypothesized that religious belief helps believers reinterpret the emotional significance of pain, leading to emotional detachment from it. Recent findings on emotion regulation support a role for the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, a region also important for driving top-down pain inhibitory circuits. (...) Using functional magnetic resonance imaging in practicing Catholics and avowed atheists and agnostics during painful stimulation, here we show the existence of a context-dependent form of analgesia that was triggered by the presentation of an image with a religious content but not by the presentation of a non-religious image. As confirmed by behavioral data, contemplation of the religious image eneabled the religious group to detach themselves from the experience of pain. Critically, this context-dependent modulation of pain specifically engaged the right VLPFC, whereas group-specific preferential liking of one of the pictures was associated with activation in the ventral midbrain. We suggest that religious belief might provide a framework that allows individuals to engage known pain-regulatory brain processes. (shrink)

This article deploys Peircean approach to bodily skills, foregrounding motricity as a semiotically mediated and a “suprasubjective” process. By examining two contrasting skills – javelin and martial arts – I draw out the relevance of dynamic movement to the semiotics of sport and embodiment. These contrasting movements expose different epistemological assumptions since they emerge in distinct cultural traditions. To attend to the cultural dimension of movement practices – including the mediation of signs making certain movement forms seem reasonable or desirable (...) in the first place – I highlight ecological dimensions of each somatic tradition. This ecological focus aligns with Peirce’s project of tracking how semiotic signs are positioned and mediated. To make ecological factors of motricity more recognizable, I contrast somatic engagements that take place on synthetic, predictable substrates and somatic engagements that take place on variable, unpredictable ground. In a similar way to the classic gestalt figure-ground relations, where perception of a figure depends on the particulars of the ground, I suggest that the ground upon which somatic action occurs shapes the way we make sense of it epistemologically. These different grounds – both literally and figuratively – operate representationally via thirdness: they lead us to conceptualize movement in culturally and historically particular ways. (shrink)

This five-volume German-English edition presents, for the first time, new translations of all of Wittgenstein's mature 1937-1944 writings on mathematics and logic. The first (1956) and third (1978) editions of Wittgenstein's Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics omitted, unsystematically, more than half of Wittgenstein's later writings on mathematics; for that reason, the reader will here read some entire manuscripts for the first time, and other manuscripts for the first time as unabridged, sustained pieces of writing. Philosophers and other interested readers (...) will gain fresh insight into Wittgenstein's perspectives on a wide range of topics, from Gödelian propositions and the Cantorian conception of real numbers to the nature of mathematical propositions and the diversity of proof techniques. A previous observational study suggested that when faced with a partner with its back turned, chimpanzees tend to move around to the front of a non-attending partner and then gesture — rather than gesturing once to attract attention and then again to convey a specific intent. We investigated this preference experimentally by presenting six orangutans, five gorillas, nine chimpanzees, and four bonobos with a food begging situation in which we varied the body orientation of an experimenter with respect to the (...) subject and the location of the food. These manipulations allowed us to measure whether subjects preferred to move around to face E or to use signals to attract her attention before they begged for food. Results showed that all species moved around to face E and then produced visual gestures, instead of using tactile/ auditory gestures behind E to call her attention. Species differences were apparent particularly when the food and E were in different locations. Unlike gorillas and orangutans, chimpanzees and bonobos produced their gestures in front of E in all conditions, including that in which subjects had to leave the food behind to communicate with her. Implications of these results are discussed in the context of the evolution of social cognition in great apes. (shrink)

The threat simulation theory of dreaming states that dream consciousness is essentially an ancient biological defence mechanism, evolutionarily selected for its capacity to repeatedly simulate threatening events. Threat simulation during dreaming rehearses the cognitive mechanisms required for efficient threat perception and threat avoidance, leading to increased probability of reproductive success during human evolution. One hypothesis drawn from TST is that real threatening events encountered by the individual during wakefulness should lead to an increased activation of the system, a threat simulation (...) response, and therefore, to an increased frequency and severity of threatening events in dreams. Consequently, children who live in an environment in which their physical and psychological well-being is constantly threatened should have a highly activated dream production and threat simulation system, whereas children living in a safe environment that is relatively free of such threat cues should have a weakly activated system. We tested this hypothesis by analysing the content of dream reports from severely traumatized and less traumatized Kurdish children and ordinary, non-traumatized Finnish children. Our results give support for most of the predictions drawn from TST. The severely traumatized children reported a significantly greater number of dreams and their dreams included a higher number of threatening dream events. The dream threats of traumatized children were also more severe in nature than the threats of less traumatized or non-traumatized children. (shrink)

Background Decisions on limiting life-sustaining treatment for patients in the vegetative state (VS) are emotionally and morally challenging. In Germany, doctors have to discuss, together with the legal surrogate (often a family member), whether the proposed treatment is in accordance with the patient's will. However, it is unknown whether family members of the patient in the VS actually base their decisions on the patient's wishes. Objective To examine the role of advance directives, orally expressed wishes, or the presumed will of (...) patients in a VS for family caregivers' decisions on life-sustaining treatment. Methods and sample A qualitative interview study with 14 next of kin of patients in a VS in a long-term care setting was conducted; 13 participants were the patient's legal surrogates. Interviews were analysed according to qualitative content analysis. Results The majority of family caregivers said that they were aware of aforementioned wishes of the patient that could be applied to the VS condition, but did not base their decisions primarily on these wishes. They gave three reasons for this: (a) the expectation of clinical improvement, (b) the caregivers' definition of life-sustaining treatments and (c) the moral obligation not to harm the patient. If the patient's wishes were not known or not revealed, the caregivers interpreted a will to live into the patient's survival and non-verbal behaviour. Conclusions Whether or not prior treatment wishes of patients in a VS are respected depends on their applicability, and also on the medical assumptions and moral attitudes of the surrogates. We recommend repeated communication, support for the caregivers and advance care planning. (shrink)

Employment is critical for refugees’ positive integration into a receiving country. Enabling employment requires cross-sector collaborations, that is, employers collaborating with different stakeholders such as refugees, local employees, other employers, unofficial/official supporters, and authorities. A vital element of cross-sector collaborations is trust, yet the complexity of cross-sector collaborations may challenge the formation and maintenance of trust. Following a theory elaboration approach, this qualitative study with 37 employers and 27 support workers in Germany explores how employers’ experiences in cross-sector collaborations on (...) refugees’ labor market integration affect their trust in other stakeholders in this cross-sector space. Specifically, we explored employers’ perceptions of trust breaches, and how these perceptions affect their further engagement in cross-sector collaborations on refugee integration. Based on our findings, we propose a process model that describes how unmet collaboration expectations and negative assessments of collaborators’ attitudes and behaviors lead to perceived trust breaches which, in turn, lead to employers’ hesitancy to hire refugees and/or to engage in cross-sector collaborations. In doing so, we extend existing theory on trust within organizations to the cross-sector context of refugee integration, uncovering context-specific meanings to trustworthiness dimensions and illustrating how breaches of different trustworthiness dimensions can interact. Moreover, we show how social policies, resources, and trustors’ perceived vulnerability in collaborations shape their risk perceptions. This study highlights the central role of trust for refugee integration and illustrates how missing goals and process clarity endanger sustainable collaborations. (shrink)

In the context of late capitalism, cultural producers have contributed to the process of precarisation by embracing ideas of autonomy, concomitantly contributing to neoliberal policies and political-economy. I scrutinise the claim for the autonomy of the arts in Eastern Europe, a context that exemplifies the transition from socialism to the neoliberal era. The analysis foregrounds the precarious working conditions of cultural producers during the transition from self-managed socialism to the independent nation-state of Slovenia. In Slovenia, the precarisation of artists had (...) already begun in the 1980s when the socialist government implemented the Law for the Independent Cultural Workers, still in place today. I demonstrate that cultural producers address their working conditions in ideological terms, instead of approaching them in terms of class relations that govern cultural production. Hence, the claim for autonomy is a strategically misguided response to the dismantling of the welfare state. (shrink)

Despite the variety of theories suggesting how human language might have evolved, very few consider the potential role of emotions in such scenarios. The few existing theories jointly highlight that gaining control over the production of emotional communication was crucial for establishing and maintaining larger social groups. This in turn resulted in the development of more complex social emotions and the corresponding sophisticated socio-cognitive skills to understand others’ communicative behavior, providing the grounds for language to emerge. Importantly, these theories propose (...) that the ability of controlling emotional communication is a uniquely human trait, an assumption that we will challenge. By taking a comparative approach, we discuss recent findings from behavioral and neurobiological studies from our closest relatives, the non-human primates, on the extent of control over their gestural, facial and vocal signals. This demonstrates that research foci differ drastically across these modalities, which further enhances the traditional dichotomy between emotional, involuntary facial and vocal expressions in contrast to intentionally, voluntarily produced gestures. Based on this brief overview, we point to gaps of knowledge in primate communication research and suggest how investigating emotional expressions in our closest relatives might enrich the road map towards the evolution of human language. The present study was conducted with the aim of constructing and validating a short form of the Profile of Mood States. The POMS is a widely-applied measure for the assessment of an individual's mood. Thus, it is of great relevance for many research questions in clinical and social psychology. To develop the short scale, we first examined psychometric properties and found the optimal 16-item solution among all valid combinations of the full POMS in an exploratory subsample of our complete representative (...) sample of the German general population. We then validated this model in a confirmatory subsample. Additionally, we examined its invariance across age groups and sex, as well as its reliability. Our results indicate that the POMS-16 is a valid and reliable measure of mood states with minimal losses compared to the 35-item version. Particularly where brevity and an economical assessment is desired, the POMS-16 should be considered. (shrink)

ABSTRACT:The relationship between culture and corruption has been the focus of various studies, producing inconsistent results. We suggest that these inconsistencies might be due to the conceptualization and measurement of culture. Drawing on the possible value/fact dichotomy discussed in ethical philosophy, we introduce the construct of cultural discrepancy—the difference between cultural values and practices —as a predictor of pervasive and arbitrary corruption. Examining the relationship between the discrepancies observed in the GLOBE cultural dimensions and the Corruption Perception Index shows that (...) in-group collectivism discrepancy is negatively related to pervasive corruption; future orientation discrepancy is positively related to arbitrary corruption. Further, we show that these relationships are contingent on national wealth. The negative relationship for in-group collectivism discrepancy is most pronounced in poor and moderately wealthy countries, and the positive relationship for future orientation discrepancy is most pronounced in rich countries. The question in this article is how citizenship is reinvented and recontextualized in a newly founded European Union after the launching of Union Citizenship. What kind of conceptions of citizenship are produced in this new and evolving organization? The research material consists of documents presented by EU organs from 1994 to 2007 concerning eight EU programs on citizenship and culture. I will analyze conceptual similarities and differences between these documents and previous conceptualizations in various contexts, including citizenship discussions in the (...) history of integration since the 1970s as well as theories of democracy and nation-states. Based on the analysis of participation, rights, and identity as central dimensions of citizenship, I will discuss the relationship of Union Citizenship to democracy and nationality. (shrink)
