In this article, the author studies the introduction of technology into the science curriculum. He offers a general framework for analyzing technology as artifact, knowledge, and social practice. This framework provides analytical tools to study the implications of technology in general education. The analysis is framed using two events: (a) the current movement of scientific literacy, which now includes technology literacy such as in the case of Project 2061, a science education initiative of the American Association for the Advancement of (...) the Science and (b) international calls for including technology in the school curricula of developing countries. El duelo es un proceso psicológico duro de sobrellevar ante la muerte por la aparición del Covid-19 en el Perú. Cuando las personas infectadas morían a consecuencia de la infección, eran incineradas por cuenta del hospital, y a los familiares se les entregaba una caja pequeña en la que se les decía que estaban las cenizas de su difunto. Las entrevistas realizadas a niños de 11 años de edad, padres de familia y psicólogos de hospitales; revelaron cuadros de ansiedad o (...) angustia, debido al temor generalizado. Los factores de protección social y escolar fueron poco sostenibles para sobrellevar la pena. (shrink)

En la década de 1960, en Nicaragua, la revista Ventana, dirigida por los jóvenes universitarios, Sergio Ramírez y Fernando Gordillo, se constituyó en una caja de resonancia política y literaria. Confluyeron en ella el debate político y el reclamo de libertad y de autonomía, en el contexto de la dictadura con una apuesta literaria amplia y cosmopolita. Se dieron cita allí una multiplicidad de autores y textos literarios procedentes de diversas lenguas y culturas.

El objetivo propuesto en el siguiente trabajo es elucidar cómo desde la finitud de la existencia puede establecerse la problemática de la temporalidad dentro del entramado de pensamiento de Martin Heidegger. Para ello realizaremos un análisis de la conferencia de 1924 Der Begriff der Zeit, uno de los textos que allanan el camino a Sein und Zeit, en lugar de centrar la investigación en la considerada obra magna de Heidegger. Una reflexión acerca de este texto previo permitirá avanzar en el (...) análisis de la existencia al mostrar cómo el tiempo está arraigado en la existencia individual, no como un solipsismo, sino como apertura de posibilidades respecto del mundo (a la postre compartido con los otros). Una descripción fenomenológica de la muerte posibilitará la apertura al mundo, definiendo una temporalidad existencial que incluye no sólo al instante presente, sino también al pasado (concebido bajo la forma del «haber-sido») y al futuro. El pensamiento de María Zambrano emerge, en la distancia histórica, bajo la imagen, siempre sugerente, de una Antígona contemporánea. Como ella asiste al conflicto trágico de una Guerra Civil; como ella apura el cáliz del sufrimiento y la soledad para hacer emerger una conducta ética y moral que sirva de Guía a sus contemporáneos, en un momento de crisis y confusión. Todas las grandes nociones del pensamiento zambraniano (sueño, confesión, guía, alba y aurora) se dan cita en esta máscara, pero (...) será el personaje galdoniano de la Nina de Misericordia, como aspiración pura nunca lograda, el verdadero motor que revela la personalidad de María Zambrano, tal como la vemos florecer en sus obras finales, Aurora, Claros del bosque y, sobre todo, Los bienaventurados. Vivimos en unos tiempos en que la distancia entre el pensamiento crítico y el procedente de la Academia nunca había sido tan grande, y eso que hoy más que nunca resulta necesario repensar la sociedad en su conjunto para poder siquiera atisbar la posibilidad de un mundo futuro donde la vida sea digna de ser vivida. De vagos y maleantes, Michel Foucault en España nos permite acercarnos a una época de una gran vitalidad política y creatividad intelectual, la del final (...) del franquismo y la posterior Transición en el Estado español. Este periodo se caracteriza por una eclosión de movimientos sociales, ansiosos por recrear nuevos discursos superadores de las anquilosadas tesis marxistas oficiales y por dibujar horizontes de ruptura que fueran más allá de la reforma o pacto a la baja que finalmente devendría la Monarquía constitucional. Tanto en la calle como en la Universidad y su entorno, la progresiva entrada de los textos de Foucault fue seguida con gran atención, marcando de manera muy significativa la discusión política y filosófica del momento. El filósofo de Poitiers no dejó a nadie indiferente, ni a los que, aunando reflexión y praxis, se valieron con toda libertad de su ±caja de herramientas para encontrar nuevas vías de análisis y actuación para la transformación social; ni a los que, viendo peligrar las viejas ortodoxias marxistas, veían en Foucault un peligro para su hegemonía en el ámbito académico. Tal y como se refleja certeramente en esta radiografía de la Transición, los debates que el discurso crítico de Foucault provocó en los medios académicos y fuera de los mismos, para algunos no fueron más que una mera moda intelectual, en su época de "enfants terribles" o de "comunistas de salón" --tipo Fernando Savater, Josep Ramoneda o Gabriel Albiac--, antes de pasar a ejercer de intelectuales orgánicos del nuevo régimen. Sin embargo, tanto entonces como ahora las reflexiones de Foucault siguen siendo para muchos un referente fundamental para el análisis de las formas de opresión y la elaboración de nuevos discursos emancipatorios. Are judgments of praise for moral behavior modulated by knowledge of an agent's past suffering at the hands of others, and if so, in what direction? Drawing on multiple lines of research in experimental social psychology, we identify three hypotheses about the psychology of praise — typecasting, handicapping, and non-historicism — each of which supports a different answer to the question above. Typecasting predicts that information about past suffering will augment perceived patiency and thereby diminish perceived agency, making altruistic actions (...) seem less praiseworthy; handicapping predicts that this information will make altruistic actions seem more effortful, and hence more praiseworthy; and non-historicism predicts that judgments of praise will be insensitive to information about an agent's experiential history. We report the results of two studies suggesting that altruistic behavior tends to attract more praise when the experiential history of the agent involves coping with adversity in childhood rather than enjoying prosperity (Study 1, N = 348, p = .03, d = 0.45; Study 2, N = 400, p = .02, d = 0.39), as well as the results of a third study suggesting that altruistic behavior tends to be evaluated more favorably when the experiential history of the agent includes coping with adversity than in the absence of information about the agent's past experience (N = 226, p = .002). This pattern of results, we argue, is more consistent with handicapping than typecasting or non-historicism. (shrink)

Such appeals to the moral authority of nature are still very much with us today, as heated debates over genetically modified organisms and human cloning testify. _The Moral Authority of Nature_ offers a wide-ranging account of how people have used nature to think about what counts as good, beautiful, just, or valuable. Subjective and psychophysiological emotional responses to music from two different cultures were compared within these two cultures. Two identical experiments were conducted: the first in the Congolese rainforest with an isolated population of Mebenzélé Pygmies without any exposure to Western music and culture, the second with a group of Western music listeners, with no experience with Congolese music. Forty Pygmies and 40 Canadians listened in pairs to 19 music excerpts of 29–99 s in duration in random order (eight from the (...) Pygmy population and 11 Western instrumental excerpts). For both groups, emotion components were continuously measured: subjective feeling (using a two- dimensional valence and arousal rating interface), peripheral physiological activation, and facial expression. While Pygmy music was rated as positive and arousing by Pygmies, ratings of Western music by Westerners covered the range from arousing to calming and from positive to negative. Comparing psychophysiological responses to emotional qualities of Pygmy music across participant groups showed no similarities. However, Western stimuli, rated as high and low arousing by Canadians, created similar responses in both participant groups (with high arousal associated with increases in subjective and physiological activation). Several low-level acoustical features of the music presented (tempo, pitch, and timbre) were shown to affect subjective and physiological arousal similarly in both cultures. Results suggest that while the subjective dimension of emotional valence might be mediated by cultural learning, changes in arousal might involve a more basic, universal response to low-level acoustical characteristics of music. The present article presents brief notes on the "new thought" of the German philosopher Franz Rosenzweig, in the work The Star of Redemption, with the exposure of reason and its totalitarian and violent vocation, which, since Antiquity until Modernity, was based on the tireless search for knowledge of the All, in its essence, with the formulation of concepts, in a closed experience. In contrast, the philosopher from Kassel points out his proposal for a new philosophical system, with a vocabulary similar (...) to the one found in Jewish theology, even being confused with theological thought, which revealed an alternative analysis of experience (open, dynamic, relational and in time), the construction of a plural reason, admitting and respectingplurality. Se comprende por "contractualismo" la teona por la cual se explica y justifica el fundamento y la posibilidad de la sociedad a partir de un pacto entre sus miembros y que es desarrollado en toda su expresión en la Modemidad.

El pensamiento de Jorge Millas (1917-1982) posee una articulación que resulta altamente sugestiva toda vez que es posible captar, bajo el plexo de sus ideas, una clara relación de dependencia en la cual la reflexión en materia de educación es deudora de una antropología filosófica previa que operó como su soporte. El presente trabajo se propone exponer las principales ideas de Jorge Millas en materia de educación, poniendo en evidencia los nexos antes mencionados entre educación y antropología.

Building on a functionalist framework for decision-making in legal translation, a holistic approach to quality is presented in order to respond to the specificities of this field and overcome the shortcomings of general models of translation quality evaluation. The proposed approach connects legal, contextual, macrotextual and microtextual variables for the definition of the translation adequacy strategy, which guides problem-solving and the rest of the translation process. The same parameters remain traceable between the translation brief and the translation product both in (...) pre-delivery revision and in post-delivery assessment. They are the yardstick for identifying predictable evaluative criteria and competence requirements for translators and quality controllers. The implications of the approach on quality assessment and quality management practices are also discussed. Overall, the model illustrates the potential benefits of enhancing predictability and reducing subjectivity on the basis of specific legal translation methodologies. It supports the need for legal translation expertise in quality evaluation and the relevance of Legal Translation Studies to raising standards in professional practice. (shrink)

Teniendo como trasfondo el problema de una democracia intercultural, el artículo parte de la constatación de que tanto en las obras de Jürgen Habermas como en la de Ernesto Laclau y Chantal Mouffe, respectivamente, el pluralismo requiere ser limitado en las democracias modernas, sea restringiendo en cada caso los valores al ámbito de nuestras tradiciones, como imponiendo unos valores sobre otros en el espacio público. De este modo, quedan dificultadas las políticas interculturales en dichas concepciones de la democracia. Enseguida, el (...) artículo argumenta acerca de la permeabilidad de normas y valores, y sobre la posibilidad de una conversación hermenéutica, la cual no requiere una convención previa acerca de cómo dirimir las diferencias, y en la que los acuerdos se van generando a través del trascurso de la propia conversación. In this paper we purport to qualify the claim, advanced by Appelbaum that speech perception research, in the last 70 years or so, has endorsed a view on the nature of speech for which no evidence can be adduced and which has resisted falsification through active ad hoc “theoretical repair” carried by speech scientists. We show that the author’s qualms on the putative dogmatic status of speech research are utterly unwarranted, if not misconstrued as a whole. On more general (...) grounds, the present article can be understood as a work on the rather underdeveloped area of the philosophy and history of Linguistics. (shrink)

El primer propósito de este artículo es considerar el fenómeno del pensamiento en Hannah Arendt. El segundo propósito es establecer en qué sentido, según esta autora, la actividad del pensamiento puede ser una condición contra la maldad. Como en su determinación del pensar Hannah Arendt se vuelve polémicamente contra todo intento por ver el pensar ya como un ejercicio intelectual, ya como una actividad puramente mental, ya como la fundación o prosecución de tradiciones de pensamiento, ya como el monopolio de (...) unos pocos, ya como la elaboración de doctrinas o sistemas…, el texto muestra subrepticiamente esta confrontación constante de Arendt con la tradición filosófica. Tal confrontación con la tradición filosófica tiene lugar al hilo de una conversación permanente con Sócrates, en cuyos diálogos advirtió Hannah Arendt un ejemplo inequívoco de la actividad del pensamiento. We show how Peirce's architectonics folds on itself and finds local consequences that correspond to the major global hypotheses of the system. In particular, we study how the pragmaticist maxim can be technically represented in Peirce's existential graphs, well-suited to reveal an underlying continuity in logical operations, and can provide suggestive philosophical analogies. Further, using the existential graphs, we formalize — and prove one direction of — a “local proof of pragmaticism,” trying thus to explain the prominent place that existential (...) graphs can play in the architectonics of pragmaticism, as Peirce persistently advocated. Finally, we present a web of “continuous iterations” of some key Peircean concepts that supports a “lattice of partial proofs” of pragmaticism. (shrink)

This paper makes two main claims. Firstly, it imputes to Parmenides a misconception rooted in an erroneous theory of the meaning of sentences. In Parmenides' hands, this theory took the extreme form not only of being unable to make sense of falsehoods, but also of being unable to make sense of true negative predications. Secondly, it claims that Plato's double theory of "limited mixing" plus "negation as otherness" - as expounded in the Sophist - is a theory still within the (...) bounds of Parmenides' overall erroneous framework, although one which is successful at making sense of true negative predications. As regards the issue of futura contingentia, Aquinas's interpretation turns on a phrase that has sometimes been dismissed as irrelevant or even confused: "...non tamen haec vel illa determinatae...". It is shown that this clause is in complete conformity with Aquinas's interpretation of the principles of non-contradiction and of excluded middle. According to this interpretation the meaning of propositional negation derives from the first two principles considered collectively but is not presupposed by them. With respect to time-relative modalities this implies (...) that at the time of announcement, say, of a sea battle both parts of the contradiction could be true, provided one understands "could" in the sense of a counterfactual possibility with respect to the final outcome. It is also shown that Aquinas's interpretation allows one to avoid some perplexities in connection with the controversial beginning of Met. IX, 4. Some final considerations are meant to show the rationale of that interpretation. (shrink)

It is possible today to observe in hindsight the epistemological landscape of the twentieth century, and the work of Albert Lautman in mathematical philosophy appears as a profound turning point, opening to a true under- standing of creativity in mathematics and its relation with the real. Little understood in its time or even today, Lautman’s work explores the difficult but exciting intersection where modern mathematics, advanced mathe- matical invention, the structural or unitary relations of mathematical knowledge and, finally, the metaphysical (...) and dialectical tensions underly- ing mathematical activity converge. Well beyond other better-known names in philosophy of mathematics – who are focused above all on ques- tions concerning the logical problem of foundations, important but frag- mentary studies in the vast panorama of modern mathematics – Lautman broaches the emergence of inventiveness in the very broad spectrum of the development of the mathematical real. Group theory, differential geome- try, algebraic topology, differential equations, functional analysis, functions of complex variables and number fields are some of the domains of his preferred examples. He detects in them methods of construction, structu- ration and unification of modern mathematics that he connects to a precise Platonic interpretation in which powerful pairs of ideas serve to organize the edifice of effective mathematics. Nous étudions le Rapport de Lautman qui ouvre ce volume. Après une description critique des contenus et une discussion des fonds conceptuels du Rapport, nous montrons comment l’émergence postérieure de la théorie des faisceaux répond techniquement aux questionnements et aux préfigurations de Lautman.We study Lautman’s Rapport which opens this volume. After a critical description and a discussion of the contents of the Rapport, we show how the emergence of sheaf theory answers technically many questions raised by Lautman ten years earlier.

We introduce the work of Mariano Picón Salas, who tries to enlarge the Hispanoamerican tradition —historically focused on the web of transits/obstructions between Europe and Latin America— via a larger triangulation that includes the presence of the culture of the United States. His essays from the period 1930-1950 show how pragmatism —understood in Peircean terms as a web of topological transfers of knowledge between the borders of culture— can help to provide a vision that encompasses America as a whole.

No son muchos los textos en filosofía de las matemáticas que intentan dirigirse a la práctica matemática avanzada y, menos aún, aquellos que intentan acercarse a las matemáticas contemporáneas en acción. La lista de tales esfuerzos es bastante reducida—Pólya, Lakatos, Kline, Wilder, Kitcher acercándose a la matemática clásica; De Lorenzo, MacLane, Tymoczko haciéndolo a la matemática moderna; Badiou, Maddy, Patras a la matemática contemporánea—por lo que el trabajo de Corfield, ya sólo por situarse en esa línea minoritaria, merece una cierta (...) atención. El trabajo sin embargo cuenta con amplios méritos propios, más allá de apoyar una saludable línea alternativa, que se contrapone con las tendencias predominantes de la filosofía analítica o de la filosofía del lenguaje aplicadas al universo matemático. Desde el comienzo mismo, gracias a su polémico título, Towards a Philosophy of Real Mathematics, intenta romper con los prejuicios normativos al uso en la filosofía matemática, en particular con las “creencias entre filósofos de que el estudio de las mayores corrientes matemáticas recientes es innecesario”. Las matemáticas “reales” evocan la Apología de Hardy en donde el matemático inglés identifica matemáticas reales con matemáticas avanzadas, ya sea clásicas, del tipo Euler o Gauss, ya sea modernas, del tipo Galois o Riemann. Una amplia introducción presenta una argumentada defensa del valor de una perspectiva filosófica orientada hacia esas matemáticas no elementales, y exhibe algunos de los problemas mayores que emergen en esa aproximación, pero que, en cambio, el “filtro fundacionalista” no deja detectar: el estatuto de los bordes estructurales de las matemáticas, la conectividad de las diferentes teorías matemáticas, la evolución de los conceptos matemáticos, la contingencia del pensamiento matemático, la progresiva riqueza recursiva de las construcciones matemáticas. Belleza y sublimidad fueron dos conceptos sometidos a una profunda revisión por la estética del siglo XVIII. En relación a la belleza de los objetos, el empirismo cuestionó si realmente estaba basada en las proporciones de los mismos, o bien eran efecto de la percepción del espectador. Lo bello, por otra parte, demostró ser una categoría insuficiente para abarcar todo tipo de placeres estéticos. Se reivindicó así la categoría de lo sublime, concepto que, procediendo de la preceptiva retórica, fue trasladado (...) al ámbito de la estética y la creación artística. En este artículo se analiza la posición de Arteaga –expresada en sus dos obras principales, La belleza ideal y Le Rivoluzioni del teatro musicale italiano– en relación a ambos conceptos.Both beauty and sublimity were two concepts under a deep revisión by the eigtheen century aesthetics. Concerning the beauty of objects, empiricism objected whether it was grounded in the proportion which may be found in the very objects or it was rather due to the viewer´s sense perception. The beautiful fell short as to including all sort of aesthetical pleasures. It was thus claimed the categoy of the sublime; a concept whose origins were in the rhetoric was now placed at the center of the aesthetics and into the heart of the artistical creation. In this paper its present the analysis of both concepts concernings to Arteaga’s works: La belleza ideal and Le Revoluzioni del teatro musicale italiano. (shrink)

En el siguiente trabajo distinguiremos la influencia del pensamiento de Heidegger en elaboraciones de Byung Chul Han en el marco de sus consideraciones de los lazos sociales, comunitarios y de sus respectivos enfoques críticos respecto de la tradición metafísica de la subjetividad. A partir de analizar el modo en que Han articula sus interpretaciones críticas de la analítica de Sein und Zeit, en el marco de sus propios análisis político-sociales contemporáneos, buscaremos distinguir continuidades y diferencias entre ambas perspectivas. De esta (...) manera nos proponemos poner en evidencia ambas comprensiones del existente humano articuladas en torno a los lazos sociales, para dar cuenta de sus alcances respectivos. (shrink)

This article deals with the relation between a theory of law and a theory of legal reasoning. Starting from a close reading of Chapter VII of H. L. A. Hart's The Concept of Law, it claims that a theory of law like Hart's requires a particular theory of legal reasoning, or at least a theory of legal reasoning with some particular characteristics. It then goes on to say that any theory of legal reasoning that satisfies those requirements is highly implausible, (...) and tries to show that this is the reason why not only Hart, but also writers like Neil MacCormick and Joseph Raz have failed to offer a theory of legal reasoning that is compatible with legal positivism as a theory of law. They have faced a choice between an explanation of legal reasoning that is incompatible with the core of legal positivism or else strangely sceptical, insofar as it severs the link between general rules and particular decisions that purport to apply them.
