Why and how does a multinational corporation adapt its strategy and organizational capabilities to address markets at the base of the pyramid? This paper builds on the results of a 3-year action research program conducted with Lafarge, a global building materials company, during which it started to consider the BOP segment as a strategic business opportunity. The article shows how pilot projects and global action networks created as part of the action research in the Indonesian subsidiary and the firm’s head (...) office contributed to this change. In this article, a chapter from a more general study, the butterfly is considered as an arresting `index', highlighting the evolution of children's culture and the relationships between science and literature. Comparing Furetière's knowledge of this insect, as set out in his Dictionnaire universel (1690), to its literary representations in Charles Perrault's or Fénelon's tales, helps to assess the context in which children's literature came to be written within the higher circles of the Versailles Court society. It also explains some (...) aspects of the `Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes'. Flying the flag for modernism, the butterfly stands in rhetorical opposition to the industrious bee or `zephyr' of the pastoral and idyll, as a sign of liberated childhood. An epilogue shows that butterflies in contemporary writings for children offer a postmodern illustration of the baroque trend that was initiated in children's literature at the end of the 17th century, and impart a special flavour to some of the most popular tales and picture-books. It seems possible to identify more precisely the variety, thanks to ancient texts about botany, especially one from Athenaeus who speaks about mh''la Delf ikav. These one were maybe obtained by grafting an apple tree on a quince tree. This graft was particularly liked in the Greco-Roman world. For a (...) Greek mind the quince was born in Creta ; it could have come to Delphi in archaic times. Considering mythology and cult music, we may understand that Cretan people were in Delphi at the time. Then an apple tree was grafted and the new apples were so beautiful that they were considered as a wonderful award. We may assume that a Roman emperor made that decision, probably Hadrian, whose action for the sanctuary of Delphi is well known. (shrink)

Why does a man belonging to a certain society dress as he does if not because a set of values and constraints such as custom, price, taste or decency prescribes or forbids certain usages, tolerates or encourages certain conduct? Dictating the use and assortment of various garments, this set of (...) values is the expression of a veritable ethics of dress, protected by a series of sanctions that, from simple mockery to punitive measures (sumptuary laws or the present-day repression of transvestism and the illegal wearing of military, ecclesiastical or judiciary garb) guarantees the easy recognition of certain signs that are vital to the social order. L’article en offre plusieurs exemples qui partent de la recherche de différenciations explicables entre des pratiques intellectuelles d’abstraction. The interventionist account of causation offers a criterion to distinguish causes from non-causes. It also aims at defining various desirable properties of causal relationships, such as specificity, proportionality and stability. Here we apply an information-theoretic approach to these properties. We show that the interventionist criterion of causation is formally equivalent to non-zero specificity, and that there are natural, information-theoretic ways to explicate the distinction between potential and actual causal influence. We explicate the idea that the description of causes should be (...) proportional to that of their effects. Then we draw a distinction between two ideas in the existing literature, the range of invariance of a causal relationship and its stability. The range of invariance is related to specificity and range of causal values. Stability concerns the effect of additional variables on the relationship between some focal pair of cause and effect variables. We show how to distinguish and measure the direct influence of background variables on the effect variable, and their influence on the relationship between the focal cause and the effect variable. Finally, we discuss the limitations of the information-theoretic approach, and offer prospects for complementary approaches. (shrink)

When adopted in 1991, the French Loi Evin was pioneering as one of the first in the world to regulate alcohol marketing as extensively. This short contribution assesses whether it remains fit for purpose over 30 years later. To this effect, it assesses its main provisions, considers the legislative amendments that have ensued as well as the extensive interpretation French courts have given of its scope, before concluding that the prospects for its revisions are limited in the near future.

The Corporate Social Performance (CSP) model (Wood, Acad Manag Rev 164:691–718, 1991) assesses a firm’s social responsibility at three levels of analysis—institutional, organizational and individual—and measures the resulting social outcomes. In this paper, we focus on the individual level of CSP, manifested in the managerial discretion of a firm’s principles, processes, and policies regarding social responsibilities. Specifically, we address the human resources management of employees as a way of promoting CSR values and producing socially minded outcomes. We show that applying (...) the humanist philosophy to the managerial discretion of a business organization leads to the creation of an “autonomy supportive work environment”—as defined by the self-determination theory—which in turn, facilitates the internalization of social values, citizenship behaviors, and cooperation. The objective of promoting self-determination at work (i.e., the core of a humanist management) fits well with the ontology of social responsibility since autonomy and consideration of individuals as moral actors are central tenets. Furthermore, we show that applying humanistic management philosophy to the discretion of managers can lead to socially responsible outcomes. First, intra-organizational stakeholders (e.g., employees) are treated with respect and focus is put on their well-being, satisfaction, and self-actualization at work. Second, as employees’ need of self-determination is addressed by managers, it is likely that pro-social behaviors toward other stakeholders of the organization will be adopted, leading to socially responsible outcomes for extra-organizational stakeholders (Gagné, Motiv Emot 77:58–75, 2003). Thus, this paper ultimately posits that humanistic management applied to the HRM can be a solution for developing and maintaining socially responsible outcomes as determined at the individual level of the CSP model, through managerial discretion. We compare two different elicitation methods for measuring risk attitudes on a sample of French farmers. We consider the lottery tasks initially proposed by Holt and Laury (Econ Rev 92:1644–1655, 2002) and by Eckel and Grossman (Evol Hum Behav 23:281–295, 2002; J Econ Behav Org 68:1–7, 2008). The main empirical result from this within-subject study is that risk preference measures are affected by the type of mechanism used. We first show that this risk preference instability can be related to non-expected (...) utility preferences of farmers. Using a risk-taking psychometric questionnaire, we then demonstrate that risk preferences of farmers are context-dependent. This may be another explanation of the observed risk preference instability. (shrink)

While it is widely agreed that the extraction of regularities from the environment is a fundamental facet of cognition, there is still debate about the nature of rule learning. Rey and colleagues show that the comparison between human and non‐human primates can contribute important insights to this debate.

Le Marx de Michel Henry est un ouvrage paradoxal – comme en témoigne sa conclusion en manière de coup de force, selon laquelle Marx, au motif que sa philosophie contiendrait une « métaphysique de l’individu », est « l’un des premiers penseurs chrétiens de l’Occident » –, et, à ce titre, il ne peut valoir que par l’éclairage inédit qu’il donne aux textes précis qu’il commente. M. Henry procède ainsi en prêtant à Marx une ontologie de la « vie » (...) subjective et monadique, celle-ci étant elle-même déterminée principalement comme « affectivité », tout en cherchant à mettre en lumière les concepts économiques de Marx à partir de cette notion. On July 2021, the UK High Court of Justice heard the Case CO/2066/2020 on the application of Heidi Crowter who lives with Down’s syndrome, and Máire Lea-Wilson whose son Aidan has Down’s syndrome. Crowter and Lea-Wilson, with the support of the disability rights campaign, ‘Don’t Screen Us Out’, have been taking legal action against the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care (the UK Government) for a review of the 1967 Abortion Act: the removal of section 1(1)(d) making termination (...) of pregnancy lawful for ‘severe’ fetal indications detected after 24 weeks' gestation. On 23 September 2021, the High Court dismissed the claim. This action came at a time when non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) was introduced into the NHS England Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme for the trisomies 21, 13 and 18. The implementation of NIPT has been heavily criticised, in particular by ‘Don’t Screen Us Out’ campaigners, for increasing fetal selection and discrimination of people living with disabilities. The case of Crowter and Lea-Wilson echoes debates in other European countries such as in France and Germany, where the introduction of NIPT in the public healthcare system has provoked equally vehement public reactions and discussions. The comparison between these three countries allows contextualising the public discourses around NIPT and the ground for termination of pregnancy in relation to different socio-cultural and political contexts. We examine how each country, and particularly England, deals with the conflict between the principles of promoting the rights of people living with disabilities and preserving women’s reproductive autonomy. La mondialisation ne se confond ni avec la solidarité écologique à l’échelle planétaire, ni avec la similitude des techniques de production, de communication ou de consommation, ni même avec une structure partagée entre les diverses nations. La mondialisation est un processus d’intégration de certaines cultures locales dans le système marchand. La diversité des configurations culturelles nourrit la mondialisation. Inversement, la globalité de l'environnement technique, économique et politique favorise la diversité du rapport au monde et l'individualisme. Le lien entre mondialisation et (...) internationalisation est riche d’enseignements. Il fait apparaître la source politique de la mondialisation, qui dépend de la décision, prise au niveau des états, d'élargir l’espace économique par-delà les frontières nationales. Cette recomposition de l’espace, et les bouleversements techniques, économiques et culturels qu’elle engendre, induisent des questions éthiques. Les trois principales touchent l’identité des personnes, la justice et la vérité : l'identité, car les frontières qui structurent la personne s'estompent ; la justice, du fait de 1a volatilité des prix et des rémunérations ; la vérité, face à un monde économique rendu virtuel par l'hypertrophie de sa dimension financière. Globalization should not be confused with ecological solidarity on a planetary scale, nor with techniques of production, communication, or consummation that are similar, nor even with a common culture shared between diverse nations. Globalization is a process of integration of certain local cultures in a market systeme. This diversity of cultural configurations nourishes globalization. Inversely, the globality of the technical, economic and political environment favors diversity of relationship to the world and individualism. The connection between globalization and internationalization is rich with lessons. It brings to light the political source of globalization, which depends on a decision, taken at the level of States, to enlarge the economic sector beyond national frontiers. The recomposition of this sector, and the technical, economic, and cultural upheavals that it gives rise to, introduces ethical questions. The three principles ones touch the identity of persons, justice, and truth : identity, because the boundaries that structure the person are blurred ; justice, due to the instability of prices and salaries ; truth in face of an economic world become virtual by the enlargememt of its financial dimension. In this article I want to create a presumption in favor of a nonreductive analysis of emotional phenomenology. The presumption relies on the claim that none of the nonemotional elements which are usually regarded as constitutive of emotional phenomenology may reasonably be considered responsible for the evaluative character of the latter. In section 1 I suggest this is true of cognitive elements, arguing that so-called ‘evaluative’ judgments usually result from emotional, evaluative attitudes, and should not be conflated with them. S'il n'y avait qu'une seule chose à dire de Bergson, ce serait celle-ci: l'expérience du temps, qu'il appelle la «durée», est le cœur de toute son œuvre, ce dont il est parti, ce à quoi il est inlassablement revenu et qu'il invitait à toujours retrouver sous peine de manquer l'essentiel de sa pensée comme de notre vie. Mais de cette intuition centrale du philosophe on a fini par faire une antienne, et presque une banalité, en oubliant qu'elle fut, d'un bout (...) à l'autre de son parcours, une source d'étonnement continue. Car ce fut par hasard, et à la faveur d'un véritable choc, que Bergson découvrit la durée. Ce fut aussi sans l'avoir voulu, et même à contrecœur, que, d'abord séduit par le mécanisme, il se trouva contraint de reconnaître la contingence et l'imprévisible impliqués dans la compréhension rigoureuse du temps. Et ce fut encore sans s'y attendre, sous le coup d'une surprise, qu'en 1907, dans L'Évolution créatrice, à l'occasion d'une critique de la biologie de son époque, Bergson vit surgir la nouveauté comme cet aspect ultime de la durée qui enflamma littéralement les enjeux critiques et métaphysiques de sa pensée. Philosopher «en durée», ce fut toujours pour lui avancer de manière expérimentale, en se mettant à l'écoute du réel, sans jamais rien considérer comme acquis. The canonists’ determination of the sphere of sanction provides an insight into the foundations of ecclesiastical tolerance. There is indeed an ecclesiastical tolerance that leads the magisterium to limit the scope of penal normativity for theological and pastoral reasons. The distinction between sin and crime, well known to canonists, is justified less by recourse to decretals or decisions of councils than by a return to the discourses of the Church Fathers. The definition of the notion of crime in canon law (...) and beyond owes a debt to Augustine’s meditation on the Donatist quarrel: according to this approach, it is a question of tolerating the tares. Ainsi, en vertu de l’activité d’autodépassement (...) perpétuel et d’antagonisme incessant qui caractérise la volonté de puissance, Nietzsche s’emploie à faire la critique des autres formes de philosophies de l’histoire pour imposer sa « morphologie de la volonté de puissance », et il s’efforce en outre, tout au long de son propre itinéraire intellectuel, de lutter aussi contre lui-même, dans la mesure où les alliances qu’il avait contractées auparavant le retenaient d’être pleinement original. Le commentaire d’un texte de Michel Foucault donné au baccalauréat nous permet de voir comment Foucault se réapproprie les thèses de Canguilhem à la lumière de sa propre conception de la biopolitique et de l’archéologie des concepts. C’est aussi par conséquent un bon moyen de situer les conceptions de Foucault et Canguilhem relativement aux sciences de l’évolution et à l’épistémologie historique, afin d’examiner comment ils s’emparent philosophiquement des concepts issus des sciences de l’information et du néodarwinisme. C’est enfin, généalogiquement, l’occasion (...) de faire apparaître l’ascendance nietzschéenne de la conception foucaldienne de la vie, pour montrer comment il s’empare des auteurs pour en réactualiser les intuitions les plus profondes, à savoir en l’occurrence que la vie est fondamentalement un écart, une dérive anomale. La philosophie de Nietzsche se présente comme une entreprise d'autodépassement du sens historique que consacrent au XIXe siècle l'historicisme, les philosophies de l'histoire et les évolutionnismes. En retournant contre lui-même son propre dard, le sens historique procède à la réévaluation de l'histoire.

Cet article se demande pourquoi Sartre a tellement tenu à croire que le récit biographique, celui qu’il pratique dans sa psychanalyse existentielle, pouvait révéler la vérité d’un individu. Il remonte, pour cela, à ce que les Carnets de la drôle de guerre appellent « l’illusion biographique », qui consiste à penser qu’une vie vécue peut ressembler à une vie racontée. Sartre fonde pourtant sa propre pratique de la biographie sur cette illusion, car seule la biographie peut donner au sujet sartrien (...) l’identité et l’unité dont il est dépourvu. Nous nous efforçons alors de distinguer la psychanalyse existentielle de la psychanalyse freudienne, qui prétend elle aussi accéder à la vérité du sujet. (shrink)

This article explores the historical background of the Kantian demarcation between non-science, improper science and proper science. It is argued that Kant’s claim that « a doctrine of nature will contain only as much proper science as there is mathematics capable of application there » ensued after a long series of responses to the demarcation challenge preceding Kant’s, which responses attempted to distinguish between proper mathematics and proper natural science. The article suggests that the unusual expression « improper science » (...) is a direct response to the conception that proper natural science is independent of any mathematics. Finally, it defends the notion that this tripartition is already at work in Kant’s first articles on physics and that it is this division that lies in the background of the Kantian project to bring metaphysics onto the path of science. This article argues that Brentano’s classification of mental phenomena is best understood against the background of the theories of natural classification held by Auguste Comte and John Stuart Mill. Section 1 offers a reconstruction of Brentano’s two-premise argument for his tripartite classification. Section 2 gives a brief overview of the reception and historical background of the classification project. Section 3 addresses the question as to why a classification of mental phenomena is needed at all and traces the answer back to (...) Mill’s view that psychological laws are class-specific. Section 4 and 5 connect the second premise of Brentano’s argument to Comte’s principle of comparative likeness and Mill’s insistance that class membership is determined by the possession of common characteristics. And section 6 briefly discusses the evidence Brentano provides for the first premise. (shrink)

According to the transparency thesis, some conscious states are transparent or “diaphanous”. This thesis is often believed to be incompatible with an inner‐awareness account of phenomenal consciousness. In this article, I reject this incompatibility. Instead, I defend a compatibilist approach to transparency. To date, most attempts to do so require a rejection of strong transparency in favor of weak transparency. In this view, transparent states can be attended to by attending (in the right way) to the presented world: that is, (...) they are merely translucent. Here, I first argue that this understanding of transparency is too weak to qualify as a compatibilist view. Drawing on insights from Franz Brentano, I then describe a middle road between strong and weak transparency. The crucial idea is that, although transparent states cannot be attended to, they can be noticed (under suitable conditions). This view, I submit, allows supporters of inner awareness to commit themselves to a more interesting understanding of transparency—moderate transparency—that preserves the initial intuition underlying the transparency metaphor. In 1952, Heinrich Scholz published a question in The Journal of Symbolic Logic asking for a characterization of spectra, i.e., sets of natural numbers that are the cardinalities of finite models of first order sentences. Günter Asser in turn asked whether the complement of a spectrum is always a spectrum. These innocent questions turned out to be seminal for the development of finite model theory and descriptive complexity. In this paper we survey developments over the last 50-odd years pertaining to (...) the spectrum problem. Our presentation follows conceptual developments rather than the chronological order. Originally a number theoretic problem, it has been approached by means of recursion theory, resource bounded complexity theory, classification by complexity of the defining sentences, and finally by means of structural graph theory. Although Scholz' question was answered in various ways, Asser's question remains open. (shrink)
