Immanuel Kant hat wie kein anderer Denker die Philosophie der Neuzeit geprägt. Aufgrund seiner überragenden Bedeutung liegen inzwischen auch schon mehrere Bände zu seinen Schriften in der Reihe Klassiker Auslegen vor. Kant ist im wahrsten Sinne ein universeller Denker, der sein Interesse auf nahezu alle Bereiche des menschlichen Lebens richtet. Nach ihm lässt sich dieses Interesse in drei Fragen bündeln: Was kann ich wissen? Wie soll ich handeln? Und: Was darf ich hoffen? Der Antwort auf die dritte Frage geht Kant (...) in seiner Schrift Die Religion innerhalb der Grenzen der bloßen Vernunft nach. Hier, in seiner Religionsphilosophie, setzt er, gemäß der Grundüberzeugung der Aufklärung, seine Moralphilosophie fort. Gott ist für Kant nicht mehr wie etwa in der mittelalterlichen Philosophie, auch noch bei Descartes ein Gegenstand des Wissens, sondern des Hoffens: Der moralisch handelnde Mensch hofft auf eine sinnvolle Ordnung des Weltganzen, auf einen Gott, dessen Existenz zusammen mit der Unsterblichkeit der Seele die notwendige Voraussetzung für das letzte Ziel des praktischen Handelns, für das höchste Gut, ist. Diese originelle Verbindung von zunächst als gegensätzlich Erscheinendem, von einer Moral der Autonomie mit dem Glauben an einen übernatürlichen Gott, bildet jedoch nicht das einzige Thema der Schrift. In ihr entwickelt Kant darüber hinaus eine differenzierte Theorie des moralisch Bösen und erörtert das Verhältnis zwischen einem bloßen Kirchenglauben und dem moralischen Religionsglauben. Dieser thematisch reichhaltige Text wird im von Otfried Höffe herausgegebenen Band in Form eines kooperativen Kommentars von international renommierten Autoren interpretiert und somit aktuell erschlossen. This article argues that the causal theory of action cannot explain conscious human action adequately. Interpreting actions as bodily movements caused by (mental) states internal to the agent does not do justice to the particular role of the agent herself as ‘performing’ or ‘bringing about’ the action in the light of specific reasons. The only thing one can say about actions being distinct from other bodily movements such as automatic physiological processes or reflexes will employ again the concept of action (...) resp. of the agent doing something consciously. Therefore the thesis is defended that the concept of conscious action resp. human agency is a basic concept referring to the basic capacity of human persons to perform actions consciously. This capacity cannot be reduced to other phenomena within the agent such as mental states and causal mechanisms regulating and guiding human behaviour. If this view of human agency is correct, it sets a limit to attempts of naturalising the human person. (shrink)

My paper aims to outline the concept of the pathic foundation of political institutions. I depart from the observation of a lack of clarity concerning the resources of institutional stability in the work of Chantal Mouffe and the proponents of agonistic democracy. Drawing from the ideas of Claude Lefort and Carl von Clausewitz, I sketch the idea that the experience of confict itself generates the moral and epistemic groundings that legitimize and stabilize its institutional regulations. It is within the pathic (...) experience of exhaustion in the face of the results of escalating confict that a common ground of legitimacy is reached. The bulk of my paper is dedicated to the phenomenological analysis of the foundational pathic experience, of the pathic disposition of political subjectivity resulting from it, and of its institutional manifestations. A book review of Herta Nagl-Docekal's monograph "Innere Freiheit. Grenzen der nachmetaphysischen Moralkonzeptionen" (Inner Freedom. The Limits of the post-metaphysical moral conceptions"), published in 2014.

The International Panel on Social Progress is an independent association of top research scholars with the goal of assessing methods for improving the main institutions of modern societies. The IPSP has produced a report consisting of twenty-two chapters in three volumes that distills the research of these scholars and outlines what the best social science has to say about positive social change. Written in accessible language by scholars across the social sciences and humanities, these volumes assess the achievements of world (...) societies in past centuries, the current trends, the dangers that we are now facing, and the possible futures in the twenty-first century. It covers the main socio-economic, political, and cultural dimensions of social progress, global as well as regional issues, and the diversity of challenges and their interplay around the world. The authors offer a cautious optimistic conclusion: multiple ideas for social progress and better policies are already available and deserve to be tested and implemented. (shrink)

Dieser Beitrag geht von dem Standpunkt aus, daß das menschliche Genom nicht als Privateigentum der jeweils betroffenen Person, sondern als Gemeingut der Menschheit anzusehen ist. Es wird weiter dargestellt, daß die Genomforschung selbst sowie die Anwendung der durch sie entwickelten Handlungsmöglichkeiten sowohl positive als auch negative Aspekte hat. Angesichts ihres Potentials zum Guten wäre es jedoch verfehlt, aufgrund von meist religiös basierten oder kurzsichtigen tutioristischen Bedenken, die nur auf die Möglichkeit eines Mißbrauchs des so erworbenen Wissens ausgerichtet sind, die Forschung (...) selbst oder die Weiterentwicklung und Anwendung des errungenen Wissens vollständig zu unterbinden. Andererseits wäre es jedoch auch verfehlt, auf die Einsicht und den guten Willen der Forscher allein zu bauen, oder gar die Forschung und die Entwicklung des damit verbundenen Wissenstransfers sich selbst steuern zu lassen, da ein solcher Standpunkt das Erbgut der Menschheit der Willkür eines unkontrollierbaren Prozesses aussetzen würde, der allzu leicht den skrupellosen Interessen einer voreingenommenen und nur am eigenen Vorteil interessierten Minderheit anheim fallen könnte. Es wäre daher angemessen, der Forschung klare Grenzen zu setzen und den Wissenstransfer durch entsprechende Regeln strengen Kontrollen zu unterwerfen. Es gäbe hierbei verschiedene Möglichkeiten, angemessene Regeln zu entwickeln und Kontrollen einzuschalten: z.B. durch die koordinierte Entwicklung diesbezüglicher nationaler Gesetze, deren Einhaltung dann den jeweiligen Ländern als nationale Pflicht zukommen würde; durch das Abschließen von internationalen Abkommen, deren Einhaltung von internationalen Gremien überprüft werden könnte; durch die Entwicklung angemessener Regeln seitens der internationalen wissenschaftlichen und medizinischen Gemeinschaft, welche dann die Einhaltung dieser Regeln als Bedingung zur Teilnahme am internationalen wissenschaftlichen Austausch machen könnte; usw. Der vorliegende Beitrag unterwirft diese und ähnliche Vorschläge einer kurzen kritischen Analyse und gelangt zu dem Schluß, daß Regulierung und Kontrolle nur insoweit vertretbar sind, als sie auf ethische Grundprinzipien zurückgeführt werden können und damit auf ethischer Basis beruhen. Die diesbezüglichen ethischen Grundprinzipien werden identifiziert und auf die vorliegende Problematik angewandt. Ferner wird der Schluß nahegelegt, daß eine ethisch basierte Regulierung allein nicht zur angemessenen Kontrolle genügt, sondern daß es auch einer international akkreditierten Instanz bedarf, welche über genügend Mittel verfügt, um die Befolgung dieser ethisch basierten Regeln zu überprüfen und, falls erforderlich, durch angemessene Maßnahmen zu erzwingen. This handsomely produced volume contains 22 contributions from international scholars, which were originally presented at the 2000 Conference of the International Society for Phenomenology, Fine Arts, & Aesthetics. The papers center around the theme of gardens and include a wide range of topics of interest to phenomenologists but also, perhaps, to gardeners with a philosophical bent. A sampling of topics: Leonardo's Annunciation Hortus Conclusus and its reflexive intent; hatha yoga--a phenomenological experience of nature; the Chinese attempt to miniaturize the world (...) in gardens; conflating and compressing time in commodified space and architecture; constructing the deconstructive landscape (the ruin aesthetic); and a phenomenological-anthropological aproach to Zen gardens. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Symbolic Computation, AISC 2000, held in Madrid, Spain in July 2000. The 17 revised full papers presented together with three invited papers were carefully reviewed and revised for inclusion in the book. Among the topics addressed are automated theorem proving, logical reasoning, mathematical modeling of multi-agent systems, expert systems and machine learning, computational mathematics, engineering, and industrial applications.

In her introduction to this collection, Tymieniecka presents her phenomenology of life - the leitmotif of the three-volume anniversary publication of Analecta Husserliana - as something that stands out from preceding historical attempts to investigate life in an 'integral' or 'scientific' way. After an incubation lasting throughout the 2000 years of Occidental philosophy, this scientific phenomenology/philosophy of life at last uncovers the entire area of the 'inner workings of Nature', exposing the way in which the 'sufficient reason' and the 'ground' (...) of beingness as such crystallise out of the 'onto poietic' process. This onto-poietic process, continuing as it does in the human creative condition, also reveals the authentic genius of the works of the human spirit. This new and original philosophy, free of fallacious simplifications, speculations and reductionism, opens up a basic starting point for all philosophy. The publication of the article “Recent Models of the African Iron Age and the Cattle-Related Evidence” by Hromnik in a journal sponsored by Unesco raises a number of serious issues which we, as members of the International Scientific Committee charged with the responsibility of preparing an up-to-date and scientific history of Africa purged of its mists of racist propaganda, unfounded assertions and misleading and dangerous misinterpretations, cannot ignore. These issues include the scientific accuracy or authenticity of the article.

The papers in this volume reflect much of the current unease of a world that perceives itself once more at the edge of chaos. The authors present different vistas of that experience and their inherent dialectic, expressed in numerous and ceaseless conflicts between ordering and disordering processes. They can be read as comments on the ongoing processes that lead toward greater complexity.

This volume presents a collection of refereed papers reflecting the state of the art in the area of over-constrained systems. Besides 11 revised full papers, selected from the 24 submissions to the OCS workshop held in conjunction with the First International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming, CP '95, held in Marseilles in September 1995, the book includes three comprehensive background papers of central importance for the workshop papers and the whole field. Also included is an introduction by (...) one of the volume editors together with a bibliography listing 243 entries. All in all this is a very useful reference book relevant for all researchers and practitioners interested in hierarchical, partial, and over-constrained systems. (shrink)

This collection of papers focuses on Philosophy as Metanoetics, the seminal work of the celebrated Japanese philosopher Tanabe Hajime (1885-1962).

Democracy has been a flawed hegemony since the fall of communism. Its flexibility, its commitment to equality of representation, and its recognition of the legitimacy of opposition politics are all positive features for political institutions. But democracy has many deficiencies: it is all too easily held hostage by powerful interests; it often fails to advance social justice; and it does not cope well with a number of features of the political landscape, such as political identities, boundary disputes, and environmental crises. (...) Although democracy is valuable it fits uneasily with other political values and is in many respects less than equal to the demands it confronts. In this volume prominent political theorists and social scientists present original discussions of such central issues.
