Questo contributo teorico propone una prospettiva innovativa nel dibattito sul concetto di “bullshit”. L’ipotesi principale è che la vaghezza sia un elemento fondamentale delle bullshit, che si focalizza sull’attività. In questo modo si supera il dibattito in letteratura che mette al centro o l’intenzionalità dell’enunciatore o la struttura e il contenuto degli enunciati. Si sostiene inoltre che la vaghezza non debba essere considerata come un limite, ma come un’opportunità per comprendere situazioni comunicative complesse. Questo differente approccio, basato sulla tradizione pragmatista, (...) supera alcuni limiti evidenziati in letteratura, aprendo la strada a una comprensione più approfondita del fenomeno delle bullshit. Offre inoltre una risposta esaustiva ad alcuni quesiti di Frankfurt e riconosce il lato “produttivo” delle bullshit, adattandosi meglio a molteplici circostanze quotidiane. Un approccio pragmatista al fenomeno-bullshit basato sulla vaghezza offre una maggiore comprensione di fenomeni complessi di comunicazione senza cadere nel “paradigma della sincerità” evidenziato da Frankfurt. This paper explores the intertwinement of ontology and history that happened after the idealist turn of Kantian transcendentalism, particularly in classic German idealism and later in American pragmatism. The paper focuses on the less remarked-upon consequence of this intertwinement, namely the possibility of a new reading of history based on changes in concepts and habitual mentality. The paper proposes a new take on historiography that vindicates Hegel’s insight but changes his approach to a pragmatist one, more apt to face historical (...) changes in a technical way and less easily twistable into ideological frameworks. The paper argues that the notion of habit, as phenomenologically and semiotically described by Peirce, is the fundamental cellule of the pragmatist take on the entanglement of history and ontology. The paper elaborates on the notion of habit, singling out a special form of it called “gesture” that can be a useful tool for reading the history of the human spirit without incorporating Hegel’s dialectic and Absolute. The paper compares the notion of gesture as it originated in the pragmatist tradition with the parallel use of the term in the early studies of Michel Foucault and argues that the notion of gesture is better equipped to tackle a theoretical reading of history. Practical reasoning as an important form of argumentation in politics has received limited research attention in critical discourse studies despite the proposal of an analytical model. Focusing on argument development surrounding events related to the extradition bill crisis of Hong Kong, this paper analyzes 48 editorials published in the South China Morning Post during the crisis period adopting Fairclough’s model. A number of recurrent themes have been identified in the corpus in association with the four argument components within the model (...) – Claims, Goals, Values and Circumstances – which may increase understanding of the social contexts of the extradition bill crisis. It is further argued that, although Fairclough’s model may not capture the arguments in individual editorials comprehensively, the model can be usefully applied to analyze a collection of interrelated editorials to reveal more insights about an ongoing political crisis. Objective: To measure the stability of life-sustaining treatment preferences amongst older people and analyse the factors that influence stability. Design: Longitudinal cohort study. Setting: Primary care centres, Granada (Spain). Eighty-five persons age 65 years or older. Participants filled out a questionnaire with six contexts of illness (LSPQ-e). They had to decide whether or not to receive treatment. Participants completed the questionnaire at baseline and 18 months later. Results: 86 percent of the patients did not change preferences. Sex, age, marital status, (...) hospitalisation, and self-perception of health and pain did not affect preferences. Morbidity and the death of a relative did. Conclusion: Stability of preferences of older persons in relation to end-of-life decisions seems to be more probable than instability. Some factors, such as the death of a relative or the increase in morbidity, can change preferences. These findings have implications for advance directives (ADs) and advance care planning. (shrink)

The contemporary research on "meta-function", closely associated with names as Breton, Ricoeur, Greisch, is located in continuity with the traditional question on metaphysics, which metaphysics itself has posed in its historical development starting from Aristotle, followed by the exegetical readings in the late antiquity, in the Arabic philosophy and in the Scholasticism. The analysis of meta-function as peculiar character of metaphysics highlights the double movement of transcendence and immanence, of going beyond and coming back. It shows how metaphysics overcomes physis (...) to rediscover it in a formal way on a deeper ontological level by posing the question about "being as being", which is not a natural object. In this way metaphysics displays its eidetical nature according to which metaphysics and phenomenology no longer appear as opposed in front of phenomena. (shrink)

In this paper, I interview Francesca De Vecchi (Full Professor of Theoretical Philosophy in Vita-Salute San Raffaele University) about her qualitative ontology and its social and normative implications. If at the foundation of our lifeworld there are significantly qualitative experiences, phenomenology can investigate the most important contemporary issues, such as gender disparity, socio-virtuality depersonalizations and political urgencies.

Multiple states are at risk of becoming uninhabitable due to climate change, forcing their populations to flee. While the 1951 Refugee Convention provides the gold standard of international protection, it is only applied to a limited subset of people fleeing their countries, those who suffer persecution, which most people fleeing climate change cannot establish. While many journalists and non-lawyers freely use the term “climate refugees,” governments, and courts, as well as UNHCR and many refugee experts, have excluded most climate refugees (...) from the Convention as a matter of legal interpretation. In our 2015 paper, “Unable to Return in the 1951 Refugee Convention: Stateless Refugees and Climate Change”, we sought to reopen the debate on “climate refugees” by arguing that some climate refugees qualify under the 1951 Convention as it is currently written (even if they are not persecuted): those who are stateless and are unable to return to their country of origin because climate change has rendered it uninhabitable. Our interpretation, however, has been rejected by Goodwin-Gill and McAdam (2021) and by Foster and Lambert (2019), which explicitly responds to our paper. Here, we address and respond to their arguments, and develop a new supplementary one, drawing on the principle of systemic integration, as enshrined in Article 31(3)(c) of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. It is hard to overstate the growing impact of the works of Andreas Reckwitz and Hartmut Rosa on contemporary social theory. Given the quality and originality of their intellectual contributions, it is no accident that they can be regarded as two towering figures of contemporary German social theory. The far-reaching significance of their respective approaches is reflected not only in their numerous publications but also in the fast-evolving secondary literature engaging with their writings. All of this should be reason (...) enough to take note of their collaborative work, which, most recently, has culminated in the publication of their co-authored book Spätmoderne in der Krise: Was leistet die Gesellschaftstheorie? (Berlin: Suhrkamp, 2021). The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the latest exchange between Reckwitz and Rosa contains valuable insights into recent and ongoing trends in society in general and social theory in particular. The first part comprises an outline of the central matters at stake in, and the core lessons learnt from, the constructive dialogue between Reckwitz’s critical analytics and Rosa’s critical theory, before moving, in the second part, to an assessment of the most significant limitations of their respective views and propositions. Nel rinnovare gli assunti di base del migliorismo statunitense, Rorty chiama in causa le consonanze tra autori come John Dewey e William James e le istanze anti-fondazionaliste provenienti dall'Europa, in vista di un ripensamento radicale della pratica filosofica. Essa va intesa non piů alla stregua di una ricerca (...) dei fondamenti ultimi della realtÀ ma piuttosto come un impegno edificante basato sul criterio della Social Hope. Gli autori del pragmaatismo sono frequentati con disinvoltura da Rorty, che condivide con James e particolarmente con Dewey la fiducia nella capacitÀ costruttiva dell'intelligenza umana e nella cooperazione sperimentale degli individui, accantonando invece Peirce e la sua importante nozione di "infinite hope". Il carattere ‘quasi-religioso'che egli assegna agli ideali democratici č un'espressione peculiare di un ‘naturalismo umanistico' che valorizza la capacitÀ immaginativa e la conoscenza scientifica, quali strumenti basilari per sviluppare le migliori possibilitÀ umane, prescindendo dall'individualismo e da ogni forma di dogmatismo. La complessitÀ del pensiero deweyano, delle sue fonti di ispirazione cosě (...) come delle sue istanze piů originali, sembra offrire sufficienti motivi tanto per mitigare i rischi di un incauto scientismo quanto per lasciare spazio a un ulteriore approfondimento del problema delle credenze religiose, problema che, nel nostro tempo, appare tutt'altro che secondario. A widespread historiographical portrayal represented Descartes' dualism as constituted in direct contrast with Aquinas' concept of soul-form. In the wake of the many studies that have opposed this prejudice in recent decades, this book reconstructs the fifteenth and seventeenth-century debate on psychology, focusing primarily on the Jesuit context and on the intersection between Aristotelianism, Platonism, and Augustinianism in early modern France. Beginning with a rigorous investigation of the theories of the separated soul, particular attention is then given to the indirect (...) derivation of the Cartesian cogito and innatism from angelological themes of the time. Indeed, in the years in which Descartes elaborates his metaphysics, the immediate proximity between souls and angels is somehow a matter of fact, in the light of which many of the argumentative choices of the Meditations, and even the relationship that closely joins the "thinking substance" with the body-machine, appear clear. -/- . I grandi interrogativi sul significato della vita umana - sull'origine e la fine di ognuno - sull'origine e la fine dell'esistenza di ognuno - sono al cuore della riflessione filosofica e teologica, ma interpellano in maniera nuova anche le discipline scientifiche, psicologiche, sociali e giuridiche. Soprattutto toccano il nostro agire; è la sfera dell'etica ad essere coinvolta, come valori, principi e norme che guidano le decisioni da prendere. Le religioni e le tradizioni culturali hanno sempre accompagnato queste realtà, (...) elaborando principi e norme etiche, esperienze rituali e assistenziali. Al loro significato per la bioetica è dedicato il progetto di ricerca della Fondazione Lanza, che ha già trovato una prima espressione nel volume Bioetica e religioni. Un confronto dall'inizio della vita, a cura di Lorenzo Biagi e Renzo Pegoraro. In questo secondo testo, l'attenzione è sulle questioni legate alla fase terminale della vita umana, così profondamente toccata dai progressi della scienza e della medicina. Vi si trovano documentate le posizioni delle diverse confessioni cristiane (Cattolicesimo, Ortodossia, Protestantesimo, Anglicanesimo) e delle altre grandi fedi dell'umanità (Ebraismo, Islam, Buddismo, Induismo), illustrate da esponenti qualificati. Among the main themes introduced by the Ficinian renovatio platonica, love and beauty are certainly ones of the most outstanding and philosophically relevant for the metaphysical, cosmological and anthropological doctrines they convey. Pupil and recognised successor of Marsilio Ficino, Francesco Cattani da Diacceto is the author of an organic and complex philosophy of love and his contribution is extremely significant amid De amore Renaissance treatises. Cattani’s attitude is twofold and ambiguous: he heavily depends on Pico and on his Commento sopra (...) una canzona de amore, however, he also shows his disapproval to Pico’s positions by quoting and commenting negatively large portions of his texts − always keeping the lid on Pico’s name. In addition to doctrinal dissent there seems to be a certain resentment: maybe it is the attempt to throw Pico’s figure and cultural legacy into the shade and to display himself as the only and worthy successor of Ficino; certainly it is the will to defend his master from Pico’s harsh criticism, a defence that became more compelling with the publication of the Commento in 1519, which probably inspired Cattani’s last and unfinished work, the In Platonis Symposium enarratio. Tommaso Giannini was a prominent professor at the ferrarese Studium between sixteenth and seventeenth century. Probably influenced by Platonic sympathies nurtured by the Court and partly by the University milieu, in 1587 he published his first work titled De providentia ad sententiam Platonis et Platonicorum liber unus, which was a catalyst for his academic career. A compilative work in essence, the De providentia displays a large amount of sources always tacitly used: Marsilio Ficino, Jacques Charpentier, Giulio Serina, Stefano Tiepolo, Teofilo (...) Zimara, Bessarion, Agostino Steuco and amid the ancients Plotinus, Plutarcus, Sirianus, Proclus, Giamblicus, Apuleius, Calcidius, Ammonius, Psellus. A small place is reserved to Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and precisely to his Disputationes adversus astrologiam divinatricem. The aim of the paper is to provide a supplement of analysis of Giannini’s interest in Pico’s works considering his later writings, each one commonly identified as Disputationes Aristotelicae. RESUMO. O romance A convidada, de Simone de Beauvoir, não é ainda a manifestação sensível da moral da ambiguidade propriamente dita. É possível, no entanto, compreender a relação entre alguns conceitos fundamentais que povoam a forma romanesca e a concepção da metafísica moral, tal como Merleau-Ponty a concebe, tanto no ensaio que o filósofo consagrou ao romance, quanto em suas anotações, em O visível e o invisível. A partir dessa relação, destacaremos três momentos distintos e complementares: das imagens negativas (...) à tomada de decisão; as formas abstratas da alteridade e a alteridade concreta; da sedimentação dos conteúdos em movimento à forma da reversibilidade. ABSTRACT: Simone de Beauvoir's novel L'invitée is not yet the sensible manifestation of a morals made up of ambiguities in the strict sense. However, it is possible to comprehend the relationship between some fundamental concepts that abide in the novelistic form and in a conception of moral metaphysics, as these are conceived by Merleau-Ponty in his essay dedicated to de Beauvoir's novel and in his notes on The Visible and the Invisible. From this relationship, we will highlight three distinct but complimentary moments: from negative images to the making of decisions; abstract forms of alterity and concrete alterity; from the sedimentation of contents in movement to the form of reversibility. The article introduces Marin Cureau de La Chambre’s theory of light, focusing especially on the treatise Le Lumière (1657). Specifically, the anti-Cartesian and anti-mechanistic side of Cureau’s work is stressed, reconstructing its account of the “essential” nature of light, linking it to the Franciscan and the Platonic tradition and focusing on the peculiar use of the notion of “extensio formalis.” Additionally, Cureau’s theory of color and his theories on irradiance and light’s movement is presented. Finally, the article illustrates Cureau’s qualitative (...) explanation of refraction and reflection, reconstructing his role in the genesis of Fermat’s ‘principle of least time.’ . (shrink)

This article examines the epistemological role of the fable as used by Descartes in his Monde to present the idea of an entirely mechanical world. Rather than merely a dissimulative-literary device, putting the world into fable form actually turns out to be a real scientific instrument, making it possible for Descartes to re-create the world from a metaphysical and wholly geometrical point of view, based on the changelessness of the divine essence and creation. In this sense his fable du monde (...) goes hand in hand with the ability of the human imagination to think up scientific models, that, by being plausible, can be applied to the interpretation of phenomena. ​Al principio della Meditatio Sexta, tappa conclusiva del capolavoro di Descartes, si schiude una frattura fondamentale. È quella tra intelletto e immaginazione, autentica premessa per la dimostrazione – a cui l’opera cartesiana punta sin dal titolo – della distinzione reale di mente e corpo. Come d’altra parte Descartes sottolinea già nella Synopsis (sconfessando alcune interpretazioni odierne), la reciproca alterità ontologica tra le due res non viene garantita a seguito dell’approdo al punto archimedeo del cogito della Meditatio Secunda, (...) ma solamente a seguito di un complesso iter di abductio e subductio dei contenuti della mens che culmina nel capitolo conclusivo. Qui la mens, avendo già stabilito l’esistenza, la perfezione e la veracità di Dio, fa finalmente i conti con sé stessa, mettendo mano all’analisi dei disparati elementi che hanno composto, sino a quel momento, una definizione quasi fenomenologica dell’ego cogitans come un quid «dubitans, intelligens, affirmans, negans, volens, nolens, imaginans quoque, et sentiens».
