Music Criticism in Vienna records a culture in which musical criticism had achieved the status of a minor art form. The period covered - October 1896 to December 1897 - was an eventful time in Vienna. Bruckner died, then Brahms; Mahler arrived; premieres of works by Czech composers coincidedwith increasing tension in the Empire between Czechs and Germans; Puccini's La Boheme reached Vienna on its sensational progress around the world; and the great programme music debate continued. These events (...) and issues were recorded and debated by some two dozen critics ranging from Eduard Hanslick,widely credited with (and blamed for) raising music criticism to an art, to Heinrich Schenker. The focus of Sandra McColl's monograph is unashamedly on the critics themselves, and her reconstruction of the climate of debate about whatever music or musicians came to their notice. She illuminates theintellectual climate in which the music was created, performed and received, and provides a foundation for the study of musical criticism in the post-Hanslick generation. (shrink)

Most recent discussions of reasons in art criticism focus on reasons that justify beliefs about the value of artworks. Reviving a long-neglected suggestion from Paul Ziff, I argue that we should focus instead on art-critical reasons that justify actions—namely, particular ways of engaging with artworks. I argue that a focus on practical rather than theoretical reasons yields an understanding of criticism that better fits with our intuitions about the value of reading art criticism, and which makes room (...) for a nuanced distinction between criticism that aims at universality and criticism that is resolutely personal. Two books have been particularly influential in contemporary philosophy of science: Karl R. Popper's Logic of Scientific Discovery, and Thomas S. Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Both agree upon the importance of revolutions in science, but differ about the role of criticism in science's revolutionary growth. This volume arose out of a symposium on Kuhn's work, with Popper in the chair, at an international colloquium held in London in 1965. In the scientific communities most criticisms are constructive, while they are destructive in the humanistic circles. Indeed, scientists circulate their drafts among colleagues and students, hoping to elicit their comments and suggestions before submitting their work to publication. In contrast, philosophers and political thinkers attack their rivals, without sparing arguments ad hominem or even insults. Moral agency is limited, imperfect, and structurally constrained. This is evident in the many ways we all unwittingly participate in widespread injustice through our everyday actions, which I call ‘structural wrongs’. To do justice to these facts, I argue that we should distinguish between summative and formative moral criticism. While summative criticism functions to conclusively assess an agent's performance relative to some benchmark, formative criticism aims only to improve performance in an ongoing way. I show that the (...) negative sanctions associated with summative responses are only justifiably imposed under certain conditions when persons exercise their agency wrongly — conditions that do not always hold for structural wrongs. Yet even in such cases we can still use formative responses, which are warranted whenever agents fall short of moral ideals. Expanding our repertoire of moral criticism to include both summative and formative responses enables us to better appreciate both the powers and limitations of our agency, and the complexity of moral life. 이 글의 목적은 니체의 도덕철학에 대한 비도덕주의적 해석을 비판적으로 검토하는 데 있다. 비도덕주의는 기본적으로 도덕에 반대하는 니체의 입장을 이해하려는 시도라고 볼 수 있다. 비도덕주의는 도덕을 부정적 가치나 극복해야만 하는 어떤 것이라고 주장한다. 하지만 비도덕주의는 니체가 도덕적 가치와는 다른 미적 가치, 또는 도덕과는 다른 윤리적 삶의 형식을 지지한다고 주장한다는 점에서 무도덕주의와 다르다. 한마디로 비도덕주의적 입장은 니체가 도덕은 거부하면서도 도덕과는 다른 대안적 시각을 지지한다고 주장한다. 그런데 이러한 가치 평가적 기획에는 메타윤리적 질문이 동반될 수밖에 없기 때문에, 비도덕주의가 지지하는 니체의 대안적 가치가 그가 거부하는 (...) 도덕적 가치에 비해 어떤 특권을 가질 수 있느냐 하는 의문이 제기된다. 이 글에서 필자는 비도덕주의가 니체의 대안적 시각의 규범적 정당화 문제를 해결하기 어렵다고 주장한다. 이러한 주장을 위해 필자는 먼저 그것이 제안하는 대안적 시각의 성격에 따라 비도덕주의를 ‘미학적’ 입장과 ‘윤리적’ 입장으로 나누어 살펴보고, 각 입장의 의의와 한계를 검토한다. 그 결과 니체에 대한 비도덕주의적 해석이 다원화된 새로운 문화에 살고 있는 우리에게 미적이고 윤리적인 대안적 실존의 가능성을 위한 토대를 마련해 주었음에도 불구하고, 니체의 도덕철학에 담긴 대안적 시각을 규범적으로 정당화하기 어렵다고 주장한다. 필자는 그 한계가 비도덕주의적 입장이 여전히 ‘좋은 것의 정초’라는 전통 윤리학의 기본가정에 매여 있기 때문이라고 본다. 즉 필자는 비도덕주의가 도덕적 가치 대신 니체의 대안적 가치를 정초하려고 한다는 점에서 기본적인 한계를 갖는다고 주장한다. 결론적으로 필자는 그 한계가 니체의 도덕철학을 비도덕주의가 아닌 도덕적 자연주의로 이해함으로써 보완될 수 있고, 그 전환의 의미는 니체의 도덕적 자연주의를 ‘정초의 윤리학’이 아닌 ‘금지의 윤리학’으로 파악함으로써 더 잘 해명될 수 있다고 주장한다. The immanent approach adopted by most contemporary representatives of the Critical Theory tradition has generally the purpose of offering a foundation for social criticism that, without relying exclusively on explicit or factually accepted principles, avoids both the potential arbitrariness of subjective judgment and the appeal to transcendent criteria. However, this project has not yet paid much attention to the socio-epistemic elements related to the intersubjective praxis of criticism. Based on this concern, I intend to explore the possibility of (...) immanent criticism by using the epistemic category of dissonance. I will begin by showing how Davidson’s notion of irrationality can overcome the problematic separation between healthy and pathological behavior found in Festinger’s classical theory of cognitive dissonance and serve as an indicator of epistemic contradictions that can lead to social change. Thereafter, I will explain the link between these approaches and both Brandom’s inferential semantics and Honneth’s normative reconstruction. At the end of the first part, I expect to show an articulated picture of how dissonance can serve as a key for the analysis of inconsistencies present both in the belief systems and in the institutions and practices that constitute forms of life. In the second part, I will reconstruct three possible objections to this comprehensive approach in relation to the role of the individual in processes of social criticism and to the notions of progress and rationality that the approach adopts. I will analyze here what kind of meta-criterion is necessary to overcome the discomfort generated by the experience of dissonance so that it leads to social change. Taking up the Hegelian-Pragmatist idea of accumulation of experiences, I will argue that such a meta-criterion refers to the possibility of gathering and using available and non-endogenous socio-epistemic resources that allow reconfiguring the foundations of the questioned form of life. 우리의 믿음, 욕구, 의도 등은 주관적인 성격을 갖는다. 예컨대, 우리는 존재하지 않는 대상에 대하여도 주관적으로 믿고, 생각하고, 욕구하고, 의도할 수 있다. 그리고 이와 같은 현상은 이러한 심적 태도의 내용이 외적 세계와 독립적으로, 즉 순수히 개인 내적으로 결정된다는 내재론적 직관을 이해할 수 있게 하여준다. 심성 내용이 내재적으로 결정된다는 전통적 견해는 그러나 버지(T. Burge)에 의해 촉발된 소위 심성 내용 외재론 논의에 의해 오늘날 심각하게 도전을 받고 있다. 버지는 퍼트남(H. Putnam)이 제시한 의미 외재론 논증을 응용하여, 의미뿐 아니라 심성 내용 역시 필연적으로 외적 세계의 (...) 인과적, 사회적 관계에 의존한다고 주장한다. 본 논문은 이 주장을 비판적으로 검토한다. 구체적으로, 이러한 주장을 위해 버지가 제시한 형태의 외재론 논증을 비판적으로 분석하고 그것이 충분한 설득력을 가지지 않음을 보이고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 우선, 심성 내용 외재론 논증이 전형적으로 어떤 형태를 취하는지 구체적으로 살펴보고, 이를 통해 심성 내용 외재론이 궁극적으로 의미론적 근거에 토대하고 있다는 것을 보일 것이다. 다음으로, 심성 내용에 대한 언어적 기술이 심성 내용을 결정하고 이해하는 데 있어 반드시 필요한지 또는 충분한 조건을 이루는지 구체적으로 검토한다. 이 검토를 통해 결국 언어적 기술은 심성 내용을 결정하고 이해하기 위해 필요하지도 충분하지도 않음이 드러날 것이다. 그리고 이러한 점은 결론적으로 심성 내용 외재론이 제시하고 있는 의미론적 근거는 이 이론이 주장하는 외재론적 견해를 뒷받침할 적절한 근거가 되지 않는다는 점을 드러내 보여줄 것이다. 물질주의는 물질적인 부를 획득하는 삶만이 유일하게 가치있고 행복한 삶이라고 주장한다. 이러한 부를 획득할 수 있기 위해서는 그만한 능력을 보유해야 하는데 이 능력을 검증하기 위해 끊임없이 경쟁해야만 한다. 그러나 니체의 관점에서 삶을 가치있게 만들어주는 ‘부’는 서양의 전통 철학의 형이상학적 가치 기준과 마찬가지로 허구적 가치일 뿐이기에 삶의 절대적인 기준일 수 없다. 이런 허구적 가치를 추구하도록 만드는 경쟁은 오히려 삶을 부정하는 결과를 낳는다. 결과적으로 물질주의적 경쟁을 통해서는 행복이라는 목표를 달성할 수 없기에 더 나은 삶을 살아가기 위해 이를 극복할 필요가 있다.BR 물질주의적 경쟁은 사회 (...) 구성원 전체를 불평등한 상태로 몰아간다. 불평등한 상태는 여러 가지 문제를 낳는다. 무엇보다 이런 경쟁 체제 속에서 각자는 상대방보다 더 많은 부를 획득하는 한에서만 가치있는 존재가 된다. 이런 경쟁을 통해서는 결코 최종적인 만족에 도달할 수 없다. 왜냐하면 목표를 도달해야만 한다는 압박감에 시달릴 수밖에 없으며, 충분한 기회 역시 주어지지 않기 때문이다. 결국 물질주의적 경쟁은 불평등과 차별과 같은 사회적 문제를 심회시킨다. 그러나 우리 삶은 물질적 가치 체계 역시도 필요로 하며, 또한 경쟁이 무조건적으로 잘못된 것이라 할 수 없기 때문에, 무조건 물질주의를 포기하거나 해체하는 것은 바람직한 태도가 아니다. 오히려 우리는 물질주의 및 물질주의적 경쟁의 문제점이 무엇인지를 이해하고 이를 해결할 필요가 있다. 니체를 통해서 살펴볼 수 있는 하나의 해결책은 바로 ‘아곤(agon)’ 즉, 경쟁이다.BR 니체에 따르면 삶을 긍정한다는 것은 삶이 마주하는 고통과 어려움을 얼마나 잘 극복하고자 하는가, 그리고 이를 통해 얼마나 성장하고자 하는 태도를 의미한다. 이러한 태도는 경쟁 문제에서도 똑같이 제시할 수 있다. 니체의 아곤의 궁극적 목적은 경쟁자를 제압하고 지배하는 것이 아니라 자신의 성장이다. 즉 경쟁 자체가 문제가 아니라 경쟁의 목적이 무엇인가가 문제라 할 수 있다. 니체의 관점에서 삶의 모든 행위와 가치 평가들은 개인의 삶을 더 나은 방향으로 발전시킬 수 있을 때 비로소 의미를 가진다. 니체의 아곤은 자신의 삶을 긍정하는 자들이 타인을 존중하면서 그들과 경쟁하여 서로 발전하고자 취하는 행동 방식을 의미한다. 타인을 적으로서 불평등하고 차별적으로 대하기보다는, 자기 자신을 긍정하고 자신의 성장을 위해 타자를 존중하고자 할 때 우리는 비로소 물질주의를 극복할 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구의 목적은 트랜스휴머니즘 시대의 약리학적 도덕교육의 방향에 대해 비판적 성 찰을 제공하고는 것이다. 즉 인류의 도덕성을 향상시키기 위한 방안 중 하나인 약리학적 방식으로 도덕적 능력을 향상시키는 방안을 살펴보고자 한다. 약리학적인 접근은 이론적 으로 의료화 또는 생의료화 현상과 깊은 연결성을 가지는데, 최근의 생의료화 접근은 치료 를 목적으로 하는 것을 넘어서 생명공학이 도덕적 생명향상에 초점을 두고 있다. 이것은 자연이나 사물을 향했던 기술이 이제 인간 자신을 향하게 되었지만 기술의 영향이 생의료 화 현상과 관련하여 주의할 필요성이 있게 된 것이다. 이 때문에 본 연구에서는 (...) 약리학의 의료화 생의료화가 정신건강과 행복교육의 영역을 먼저 어떻게 식민화화하면서 어떤 한 계를 표출하였는지를 살피고자 하였다. 이러한 한계는 도덕적 향상의 영역, 덕성 강화의 영역에서도 연결되면서 어떤 기술적 한계를 가질 수 있음을 살펴볼 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 윤리학적으로도 도덕판단에서 감정의 중요성과 역할에 초점을 맞추고 있는 약리학적 인간 향상 연구의 동향이 일면적 한계를 갖고 있음을 밝히면서 덕윤리학의 입장을 통해 인간의 감정에 대한 완벽한 조작가능성의 한계가 무엇인지 제시하고자 하였다. 비록 첨단 과학기 술을 통해 치료와 향상의 경계선이 불분명한 상황이지만 치료뿐만 아니라 향상의 추구가 상당한 한계를 갖고 있음을 제시하였다. 결국 트랜스휴머니즘의 도덕성 향상 기획중 약리 학적 접근은 아직 인간의 도덕적 행위능력을 고양시키지 못한다는 점을 강조하였으며, 의 료화와 생의료화의 경향이 강화되는 현실에서 오히려 역발상적 태도도 필요함을 제시하였다 즉 덕교육적 접근을 통해 전통적 도덕교육을. 제대로 시도해야 할 필요성이 있음을 제시하였다. Medicine is increasingly subject to various forms of criticism. This paper focuses on dominant forms of criticism and offers a better account of their normative character. It is argued that together, these forms of criticism are comprehensive, raising questions about both medical science and medical practice. Furthermore, it is shown that these forms of criticism mainly rely on standards of evaluation that are assumed to be internal to medicine and converge on a broader question about the (...) aim of medicine. Further work making medicine’s internal norms explicit and determining the aim of medicine would not only help to clarify to what extent the criticism is justified, but also assist an informed deliberation about the future of medicine. To illustrate some of the general difficulties associated with such a task, the paper concludes by critically engaging Edmund Pellegrino’s account of the aim of medicine as well as the Hastings Center’s consensus report. This study presents some of the contributions to the process of the constructing Europe since the illustrated ideas of the German philosopher Krause that were promoted and represented by eminent Spanish Krausist legal experts, such as Francisco Giner de los Ríos. His conception of Europe and European civilisation contains theories that, despite being surprising and openly opposed at the time, have today become part of the global heritage of modern day legal philosophy and our social aspirations. We firstly study how (...) the development of the Krausist legal philosophy contributed to the political development of Spain and how this ius-philosophical thinking had a modernising influence on Spanish legal philosophy and science. Secondly, we delve deeper into the basic principles of Krausist legal-sociological theory that have had a major influence on Europeanisation, reviewing its most ardent criticism of the European imperial nationalism doctrine. An accessible introduction to cultural theory and an original polemic about the purpose of criticism. What is criticism for? Over the past few decades, violent disagreements over that question in the academy have burst into the news media. These conflicts have renewed the Culture Wars over the legacy of the 1960s, becoming entangled in national politics and leading to a new set of questions. Does a concern with race, gender, and sexuality, with unacknowledged power and privilege, with identity, (...) give present critics the right to criticize the great works of the past? If we have learned to see those works in terms of historical differences rather than universal truths, how is it that they speak to us at all? In the study of the world's cultures, there is more than one way to avoid being Eurocentric; which way should we choose? Re-examining key thinkers since 1970, including Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Edward Said, Hortense Spillers, Fredric Jameson, and Stuart Hall, Criticism and Politics offers both a non-specialist introduction to recent cultural theory and a strong new interpretation of how this theory applies to the everyday issue of what cultural critics do and how they should feel about what they do. A growing body of literature critical of ethics review boards has drawn attention to the processes used to determine the ethical merit of research. Citing criticism on the bureaucratic nature of ethics review processes, this literature provides a useful provocation for (re)considering how the ethics review might be enacted. Much of this criticism focuses on how ethics review boards _deliberate,_ with particular attention given to the lack of transparency and opportunities for researcher recourse that characterise ethics review processes. Centered specifically on the conduct of ethics review boards convened within university settings, this paper draws on these inherent criticisms to consider the ways that ethics review boards might enact more communicative and deliberative practices. Outlining a set of principles against which ethics review boards might establish strategies for engaging with researchers and research communities, this paper draws attention to how _Deliberative communication_, _Engagement with researchers_ and the _Distribution of responsibility_ for the ethics review might be enacted in the day-to-day practice of the university human ethics review board. This paper develops these themes via a conceptual lens derived from Habermas’ (The theory of communicative action. Volume 1: Reason and the rationalization of society, 1984 ) articulation of ‘communicative action’ and Fraser’s (Social Text, 25(26), 56–80, 1990 ) consideration of ‘strong publics’ to cast consideration of the role that human ethics review boards might play in supporting university research cultures. _Deliberative communication_, _Engagement with researchers_ and the _Distribution of responsibility_ provide useful conceptual prompts for considering how ethics review boards might undertake their work. Drawing on mostly ignored texts, this book thoroughly reassesses Marx and Engels's engagement with theology.

A good chunk of the recent discussion of hypocrisy concerned the hypocritical “moral address” where, in the simplest case, a person criticises another for $$\phi $$ -ing having engaged in $$\phi $$ -ing himself, and where the critic’s reasons are overtly moral. The debate has conceptual and normative sides to it. We ask both what hypocrisy is, and why it is wrong. In this paper I focus on the conceptual explication of hypocrisy by examining the pragmatic features of the situation (...) where accusations of hypocrisy are made. After rejecting several extant views, I defend the idea that moral criticisms are best understood as moves in an agonistic or hostile conversation, and that charges of hypocrisy are attempts to prevent the hypocrite from gaining an upper hand in a situation of conflict. I finish by linking this idea to frame-theoretic analysis and evolutionary psychology. (shrink)

It furthers the dialectic when the opponent is clear about what motivates and underlies her critical stance, even if she does not adopt an opposite standpoint, but merely doubts the proponent’s opinion. Thus, there is some kind of burden of criticism. In some situations, there should an obligation for the opponent to offer explanatory counterconsiderations, if requested, whereas in others, there is no real dialectical obligation, but a mere responsibility for the opponent to cooperate by providing her motivations for (...) being critical. In this paper, it will be shown how a set of dialogue rules may encourage an opponent, in this latter type of situation, to provide her counterconsiderations, and to do so at an appropriate level of specificity. Special attention will be paid to the desired level of specificity. For example, the critic may challenge a thesis by saying “Why? Says who?,” without conveying whether she could be convinced by an argument from expert opinion, or from position to know, or from popular opinion. What are fair dialogue rules for dealing with less than fully specific criticism? (shrink)

I tackle the definition of the relation between first and second nature while examining some problems with McDowell's conception. This, in the first place, will bring out the need to extend the notion of second nature to the social dimension, understanding it not just as `inner' second nature — individual mind — but also as `outer' second nature — objective spirit. In the second place the dialectical connection between these two notions of second nature will point the way to a (...) critical use of the concept itself, which will link up with a theory of reification. Furthermore, I shall endeavor to fit my reflection into the problematic constellation of critical theory: my analysis in fact rests on the question whether, within a critical theory, the philosophy of nature can be recaptured today, in such a way as to give meaning to the very notion of socio-philosophical criticism of reality.
