We report the identification of a recurrent, 520-kb 16p12.1 microdeletion associated with childhood developmental delay. The microdeletion was detected in 20 of 11,873 cases compared with 2 of 8,540 controls and replicated in a second series of 22 of 9,254 cases compared with 6 of 6,299 controls. Most deletions were inherited, with carrier parents likely to manifest neuropsychiatric phenotypes compared to non-carrier parents. Probands were more likely to carry an additional large copy-number variant when compared to matched controls. The clinical (...)

    The Enterprise of Knowledge. [REVIEW]H. T. R. - 1982 - Review of Metaphysics 35 (3):610-612.
Levi in this book develops the views on inductive logic which he put forward in 1967 in Gambling with Truth. He extends the account given there of inductive expansion and supplements it with an account of routine expansion and contraction with the aim of constructing a view of how revisions of bodies of knowledge should be evaluated. He is concerned to give an account of the revision of probability judgments and gives the contexts of specific enquiries an important place (...)

Translating the ICAP Theory of Cognitive Engagement Into Practice.Michelene T. H. Chi, Joshua Adams, Emily B. Bogusch, Christiana Bruchok, Seokmin Kang, Matthew Lancaster, Roy Levy, Na Li, Katherine L. McEldoon, Glenda S. Stump, Ruth Wylie, Dongchen Xu & David L. Yaghmourian - 2018 - Cognitive Science 42 (6):1777-1832.
ICAP is a theory of active learning that differentiates students’ engagement based on their behaviors. ICAP postulates that Interactive engagement, demonstrated by co‐generative collaborative behaviors, is superior for learning to Constructive engagement, indicated by generative behaviors. Both kinds of engagement exceed the benefits of Active or Passive engagement, marked by manipulative and attentive behaviors, respectively. This paper discusses a 5‐year project that attempted to translate ICAP into a theory of instruction using five successive measures: (a) teachers’ understanding of ICAP after (...)

    Sustainable Development: Lost Meaning and Opportunity?A. H. T. Fergus & J. I. A. Rowney - 2005 - Journal of Business Ethics 60 (1):17-27.
The term Sustainable Development has been used in many different contexts and consequently has come to represent many different ideas. The purpose of this paper was to explore the underlying meaning of the term Sustainable Development, and to assess the dominant ethic behind such meaning. Through this exploration, we uncovered a change in the semantic meaning of the term, and described what that meaning entails. The term Sustainable Development had the potential, we argue, to stimulate discursive engagement with respect to (...)

Reasonable Suspicion of Child abuse: Finding a Common Language.Benjamin H. Levi & Sharon G. Portwood - 2011 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 39 (1):62-69.
A father brings his six-year-old daughter and her older sister to their pediatrician to be evaluated for a history of cough, runny nose, and low-grade fever. In addition to signs of a cold, the girl's nasal bridge is quite swollen and bruised. When asked how her nose was injured, she shrugs, and her father's only conjecture is that she sleepwalks and might have bumped into something. The father sits impatiently and as questioning progresses becomes increasingly defensive, at one point angrily (...)

    Philosophy As Social Expression. [REVIEW]K. H. T. - 1975 - Review of Metaphysics 28 (4):758-759.
This scholarly book addresses itself to what Levi believes to be a dual crisis in writing and teaching about the history of philosophy. One element in the crisis is neglect. Recent philosophical work deriving from Wittgenstein, Austin, et al., has given rise to "philosophic indifference and unconcern". Contemporary philosophizing has given to the discipline "an a-historicity hardly matched throughout its long development". The other ingredient in the crisis is the sort of studies which contemporary philosophers undertake when they study (...)

    Vehicle navigation using 3D visualization.M. Brunig, A. Lee, T. L. Chen & H. Schmidt - unknown
Traditional navigation visualization utilizes two-dimensional. maps for road guidance or arrow symbols for turn by turn information. While the advantage of map views is supposed to be the inherent understanding of the surroundings, often these schematic line-drawing bird's eye views are rather confusing than helpful because they cannot provide an overview and an appropriate level of detail in an area of interest at the same time, i.e. the user is forced to change between different resolutions. In this paper we describe (...)

    The Date of Anon. In Theaetetum.H. T. Arrant - 1983 - Classical Quarterly 33 (1):161.
A re-examination of the anonymous Commentary on the Theaetetus, henceforth abbreviated K, is overdue. It may yet prove to be the most important document we possess for plotting the course of pre-Plotinian Platonism, and is by far the largest surviving portion of a pre-Plotinian commentary on a complete work of Plato. It offers us insights into the issues of the first century B.C. which are unparalleled in other extant Middle Platonist works, either because of the subject of the work and (...)

    Sustainable Development: Epistemological Frameworks & an Ethic of Choice.Andrew H. T. Fergus & Julie I. A. Rowney - 2005 - Journal of Business Ethics 57 (2):197-207.
As the second part of a research agenda addressing the idea and meaning of Sustainable Development, this paper responds to the challenges set in the first paper. Using a Foucaudian perspective, we uncover and highlight the importance of discourse in the development of societal context which could lead to the radical change in our epistemological thought necessary for Sustainable Development to reach its potential. By developing an argument for an epistemological change, we suggest that business organizations have an ethical responsibility (...)

The authors discuss some of the conceptual issues that must be considered in using and understanding psychiatric classification. DSM-IV is a practical and common sense nosology of psychiatric disorders that is intended to improve communication in clinical practice and in research studies. DSM-IV has no philosophic pretensions but does raise many philosphical questions. This paper describes the development of DSM-IV and the way in which it addresses a number of philosophic issues: nominalism vs. realism, epistemology in science, the mind/body dichotomy, (...)

The objectives of this study were to develop a high-density chromosome bin map of homoeologous group 7 in hexaploid wheat, to identify gene distribution in these chromosomes, and to perform comparative studies of wheat with rice and barley. We mapped 2148 loci from 919 EST clones onto group 7 chromosomes of wheat. In the majority of cases the numbers of loci were significantly lower in the centromeric regions and tended to increase in the distal regions. The level of duplicated loci (...)
