Two thought experiments are discussed which suggest, first, a geometric interpretation of the concept of a (say, vector) potential (i.e., as a kinematic quantity associated with a transformation between moving frames of reference suitably related to the problem) and, second, that, in a quantum treatment one should extend the notion of the equivalence principle to include not only the equivalence of inertial forces with suitable “real” forces, but also the equivalence of potentials of such inertial forces and the potentials of (...) suitable real forces. The two types of cancellation are physically independent of each other, because of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Finally, we show that the latter effect itself can be understood “geometrically” as a kinematic effect arising upon the transformation between the two reference frames. (shrink)

Memlükler döneminin büyük tarihçilerinden kabul edilen Makrîzî, Ehl-i beyt ve Hz. Ali evladı taraftarlığının yanı sıra Arap asabiyesine düşkünlüğü ve muhalif tavrıyla da tanınmaktadır. Tarihin çeşitli alanlarında eserler kaleme alan Makrîzî, bunlar arasında yer alan Kitâbü’s-Sülûk’te Abbâsî Devleti’ni de ana hatlarıyla ele almıştır. Onun buradaki tespit ve yorumları, bu devletin tarihine dair farklı bir bakışı da yansıttığından ele alınmaya değerdir. Zira Makrîzî, Abbâsî Devleti yıkıldıktan sonra bu hanedana mensup bazı kişilerin Mısır’a getirtilerek halife ilan edildiği ve toplumla ulemanın onlara büyük (...) hürmet ve teveccüh gösterdiği bir vasatta umumun görüşlerinin dışına çıkarak Abbâsîler’i tenkit etme cesaretini gösteren ilginç bir tarihçidir. Bu çalışmada, öncelikle Makrîzî’nin hayatı, kişiliği ve tarihçiliğine temas edilmiştir. Ulema ailesine mensup olması, aldığı iyi eğitim ve tarihçilik konusundaki müktesebatı özellikle vurgulanmıştır. Yine çalışmaya konu edilen kısmın yer aldığı Kitâbü’s-Sülûk de ana hatlarıyla tanıtılmıştır. Ardından eserin Abbâsîlerle ilgili kısmı ayrıntılı bir şekilde değerlendirilmiş ve müellifin diğer risale ve biyografi eserlerinde verdiği malumatla zenginleştirilmiştir. (shrink)

How do we ready ourselves to intervene responsively in the contingent situations that arise in co-designing to make change? How do we attune to group dynamics and respond ethically to unpredictable developments when working with 'community'? Participatory Design can contribute to social transitions, yet its focus is often tightly tuned to technique for designing ICT at the cost of participatory practice. We challenge PD conventions by addressing what happens as we step into a situation to alter it with others, an (...) aspect of practice that cannot be replicated or interchanged. We do so to argue that practices of readiness are constituted by personal histories, experiences, philosophies and culture. We demonstrate this political argument by giving reflexive accounts of our dimensions of preparation. The narratives here are distinct, yet reveal complementary theories and worldviews that shape PD ontologies. We have organized these around the qualities of punctuation and poise as a way to draw out some less easily articulated aspects of PD practice. (shrink)

Geiger considers dilettantism as an aesthetic attitude (inner concentration) that undermines the subject's ability to truly perceive the essential value of the artwork and thus calls for outer concentration to actualize the justice of the work itself. Geiger's position suggests that we must pay equitable attention to artworks and that this attitude requires a theory of aesthetic perception -- phenomenological realism. However, the complexity of the aesthetic experience presents Geiger with several challenges, not least of which is the realisation of (...) an attitude that bridges emotion and value in aesthetic experience. This paper will attempt to defend and develop the legitimacy of Geiger's position. First, I will clarify Geiger's critique of dilettantism and suggest how this critique distinguishes him from other aesthetic claims; second, I argue that Geiger argues for an aesthetic attitude that distinguishes everyday emotions and thus ensures the value of the work of art as its own; finally, I will complete Geiger's position by drawing on later phenomenology that answers the question of how we realise the perception of artworks. This paper considers undecidability in the imitation game, the so-called Turing Test. In the Turing Test, a human, a machine, and an interrogator are the players of the game. In our model of the Turing Test, the machine and the interrogator are formalized as Turing machines, allowing us to derive several impossibility results concerning the capabilities of the interrogator. The key issue is that the validity of the Turing test is not attributed to the capability of human or machine, but (...) rather to the capability of the interrogator. In particular, it is shown that no Turing machine can be a perfect interrogator. We also discuss meta-imitation game and imitation game with analog interfaces where both the imitator and the interrogator are mimicked by continuous dynamical systems. (shrink)

İslam dünyasında oldukça etkili isimlerden biri olan Gazzâlî’nin düşünceleri, birçok konuda oldukça muğlaktır. Onun görüşlerini tespit etmedeki zorluk, genel olarak, Gazzâlî’nin eserleri arasında gözlemlenen farklılıklardan kaynaklanır. Bu farklılıklar, yalnızca üslupla alakalı olmayıp zaman zaman Gazzâlî’nin birbiriyle çelişen görüşleri savunması şeklinde de tezahür etmektedir. Ruhun tabiatı meselesi de bunlardan biridir. Gazzâlî, farklı eserleri karşılaştırıldığında, ruhun tabiatı hakkında çelişen görüşler öne sürüyor gözükmektedir. Bir taraftan el-İḳtiṣād fī’l-İtiḳād adlı eserinde ruhun yer kaplayan ve maddi bir varlık olduğunu ima ederken, diğer bazı eserlerinde ise (...) bu görüşün tersini savunmakta ve ruhun gayri-maddi olduğunu vurgulamaktadır. Gazzâlî’nin, farklı eserlerinde ruhun tabiatına ilişkin farklı görüşler serdetmesi, görünürdeki bu farklılıkların nasıl yorumlanması gerektiğine ilişkin Michael E. Marmura, Richard Frank, Timothy Gionatti, Ayman Shihadeh, Frank Griffel gibi Gazzâlî yorumcuları arasında süregiden bir tartışmaya da önayak olmuştur. Bu çalışmada ben, öncelikle, Gazzâlî’nin gerçek düşüncesine ilişkin süregiden bu tartışmayı kısaca özetleyeceğim. Sonrasında ise onun çelişiyor gözüken düşünceleri üzerine bazı mümkün uzlaştırma önerilerinde bulunacağım. (shrink)

Recent reports from 2023 and 2024 have brought to light alarming instances of healthcare professionals in China being involved in commercial surrogacy arrangements. These cases reveal the dual roles these professionals play: active facilitation, which includes actions such as selling fraudulent birth certificates that contribute to baby trafficking, and passive involvement, where routine medical care is provided to surrogate mothers without full awareness of the surrogacy context. Current regulations in China broadly prohibit surrogacy-related medical activities but fail to differentiate between (...) healthcare professionals who actively facilitate surrogacy arrangements and those who fulfil their professional obligations to patients. Drawing on professional ethics outlined in the revised 2021 Medical Practitioners Law of the People’s Republic of China and recent developments in modern slavery scholarship that emphasize the critical role of healthcare professionals in identifying and preventing exploitation, this paper argues that China has an opportunity to clarify and broaden the role of healthcare professionals in the context of surrogacy. Healthcare professionals should not be prohibited from providing medical care to surrogate mothers, provided they are not actively facilitating surrogacy arrangements. Simultaneously, they should be empowered to act as gatekeepers against exploitation. This would be an important step toward enhancing the current regulatory framework, ensuring better protections for children and women involved in surrogacy. (shrink)

This study explores the concept of digital postcolonialism, analyzing how digital economies perpetuate colonial dynamics and deepen global inequalities. Digital colonialism, much like historical colonialism, exerts control over developing regions through monopolistic ownership of digital infrastructure, data, and platforms by tech giants primarily located in the global North. By examining the labour conditions of digital workers, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, this study highlights the emergence of a “digital blue-collar” workforce facing precarious, low-wage conditions dictated by platform algorithms. Through the introduction (...) of the concept “pooriat,” the study underscores the severe poverty and dependency that characterize this workforce, reflecting a new form of economic subjugation in the digital age. These conditions reinforce a digital hierarchy, where peripheral regions provide labour and data without fair compensation or control, paralleling colonial resource extraction. The study also discusses the potential of alternative frameworks, such as platform socialism, to challenge these power imbalances by democratizing control over digital infrastructures. This research contributes to the discourse on global inequality, digital dependency, and socio-economic restructuring, emphasizing the need for a more equitable digital economy. (shrink)

Peygamber; doğumu (mevlid), mucizeleri (mi ʻ râciyye), fazileti (fazîletnâme), risâleti (bi’setnâme), savaşları (gazavât), sözleri (kırk, yüz, bin hadîs), fizikî ve ahlakî yönleriyle şemâili (şemâil, hilye), isimleri-sıfatları (esmâ-i nebî, evsâf-ı nebî), nesebi (neseb-i şerîf), vefatı (vefât-ı nebî) kısacası hayatının (siyer/sîre) tüm yönleri mensûr, manzûm, manzûm-mensûr gibi tarzlarla çeşitli şekillerde ele alınmıştır. Bunların dışında ilk dönem ürünlerinden itibaren Türk İslam Edebiyatında O’nu övmek maksadıyla hemen her şair tarafından kaleme alınan na ʻ tların nitelik ve nicelik itibariyle Hz. Peygamber (...) ile ilgili edebî türler içerisinde ayrı bir yeri bulunmaktadır. Bu türün özellikle nicelik bakımından ön plana çıkmasında; Hz. Peygamber’e duyulan derin sevginin tezahür etmesinin yanı sıra İslâmî telîf tertibinde kitaplara besmele ve hamdelenin yanı sıra salvele ile başlanması, dîvân ya da mesnevîlere tevhîd ve münâcâttan sonra na ʻ t ile devam edilmesi geleneği de etki etmiştir. Hatta edebî eser özelinde her şair na ʻ t yazmaya çalıştığı gibi tertip ettikleri eserlerini sadece na ʻ tlardan oluşturan (dîvân-ı nu ʻ ût) şairler de mevcuttur. Ayrıca farklı şairlerin gerek dinî gerekse de tasavvufî biçim ve muhtevayla kaleme aldıkları na ʻ tların derlenerek na ʻ t mecmualarının oluşturulduğu da görülmektedir. Tanıtmaya ve değerlendirmeye temel alınan eserin de hareket merkezini bu mecmualarda yer alan na ʻ tlar oluşturmaktadır. Tasavvuf düşüncesindeki Hz. Peygamber telakkisinin/tasavvururun Türk İslam toplumuna, kültürüne özelde ise na ʻ tlara etkisinin ve kaynaklığının yansımasını hedef alan çalışma; varlık, bilgi ve ahlak konuları ekseninde na ʻ t yazarlarının, metinlerini oluştururken temellerine bu düşünceden neleri koyduklarını ilmî veriler ışığında ve örnekler eşliğinde ele almaktadır. Çocuklar ölümü düşünürler, ölümle ilgili duyguları ve tasavvurları vardır. Hayallerinde, oyunlarında ve çizimlerinde ölüme yer verirler. Çocukların ölümü nasıl tasavvur ettikleri onların yaşamla bağlarını belirler. Aynı şekilde birbirinin zıddı gibi görünen ölüm ve yaşam olgularını birlikte düşünmeleri bütünleyici bir kavrayışa ulaşmalarına da yardım edebilir. Bu nedenle çocukların dünyasında ölüm ve yaşam olgusunun bilimsel olarak incelenmesi önemlidir. Benmerkezcilik, animizm ve antropomorfizm gibi çocukluk dönemine ait bazı zihinsel özellikleri onların olayları anlama ve hayal etme becerilerinde etkilidir. Ayrıca yaş ve cinsiyet de farklılıklar (...) yaratmaktadır. Bu çalışmada çocukların ölümü ve yaşamı nasıl anladıkları ve tasavvur ettikleri araştırılmıştır. Nitel araştırma yaklaşımlarından durum çalışması deseninin kullanıldığı araştırmada verilerin analizi için projektif bir yöntem olan resim analizi tekniği uygulanmıştır. 2019’da Türkiye’de Müslüman ailelerin çocukları üzerinde gerçekleştirilen araştırma için ebeveynlerinden onam alınan yaşları 9 ile 13 yaş arasında değişen 57 çocuktan ölüm ve yaşam hakkında resim yapmaları istenmiştir. Resimler çocukların cinsiyet, yaş ve bilişsel gelişim dönemleri göz önünde bulundurularak tematik olarak analiz edilmiştir. Çözümlemeler için MAXQDA 2022 nitel veri analizi yazılım programı kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada çocukların ölüm ve hayat hakkında çizdikleri resimlerde cinsiyetlerine, yaşlarına, bilişsel gelişim dönemlerine, bireysel tecrübelerine, dinî ve kültürel alt yapılarına göre farklı kompozisyonlar ve figürler kullandıkları görülmektedir. Literatür eşliğinde çözümlenen resimlerdeki somut ve soyut temalar kodlanmış ve hiyerarşik kod modelleri, kod bulutları, cinsiyet ve gelişim dönemi farklılıklarına göre çapraz analizler sunulmuştur. The counseling process involves attention, emotional perception, cognitive appraisal, and decision-making. This study aimed to investigate cognitive appraisal and the associated emotional processes when reading short therapists' statements of motivational interviewing (MI). Thirty participants with work injuries were classified into the pre-contemplation (PC,n= 15) or readiness stage of the change group (RD,n= 15). The participants viewed MI congruent (MI-C), MI incongruent (MI-INC), or control phrases during which their electroencephalograms were captured. The results indicated significant Group × Condition effects in the (...) frontally oriented late positive complex (P600/LPC). The P600/LPC's amplitudes were more positive-going in the PC than in the RD group for the MI congruent statements. Within the PC group, the amplitudes of the N400 were significantly correlated (r= 0.607–0.649) with the participants' level of negative affect. Our findings suggest that the brief contents of MI statements alone can elicit late cognitive and emotional appraisal processes beyond semantic processing. (shrink)

Este artículo busca presentar una discusión sobre el concepto de progreso moral kantiano. Primero, evaluaremos el sentido general que posee éste, buscando con esto situarlo dentro del contexto de la filosofía de la historia. Seguido, examinaremos cómo ha sido abordado dentro de algunos opúsculos de filosofía de la historia de Kant; allí veremos que tal concepto comúnmente decanta en la idea de avance, gracias al mejoramiento de las disposiciones naturales o al perfeccionamiento de la moralidad. Si bien, lo anterior resulta (...) de suma importancia, consideramos que el debate podría potencializarse dejando de lado cuál disposición es la que finalmente se torna perfectible, esto considerando que avanzar y ubicar fines morales supone además un juicio reflexionante, concepto desarrollado en la Crítica del discernimiento, el cual desde el presente nos permite interpelar y plantearnos un futuro. A cross-sectional study to ascertain what the Singapore population would regard as material risk in the anaesthesia consent-taking process and identify demographic factors that predict patient preferences in medical decision-making to tailor a more patient-centered informed consent. A survey was performed involving patients 21 years old and above who attended the pre-operative evaluation clinic over a 1-month period in Singapore General Hospital. Questionnaires were administered to assess patients’ perception of material risks, by trained interviewers. Patients’ demographics were obtained. Mann–Whitney U (...) test and Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance was used. Statistical significance was taken at p < 0.05. Four hundred fourteen patients were eligible of which 26 refused to participate and 24 were excluded due to language barrier. 364 patients were recruited. A higher level of education, being employed and younger age group are factors identified in patients who wanted greater participation in medical decisions. Gender, marital status, type of surgery, and previous surgical history did not affect their level of participation. The complications most patients knew about were Nausea, Drowsiness and Surgical Wound Pain. Patients ranked Heart Attack, Death and Stroke as the most significant risks that they wanted to be informed about in greater detail. Most patients wanted to make a joint decision with the anaesthetist, instead of letting the doctor decide or deciding for themselves. Discussion with the anaesthetist is the preferred medium of communication compared to reading a pamphlet or watching a video. Age and educational level can influence medical decision-making. Despite the digital age, most patients still prefer a clinic consult instead of audio-visual multimedia for pre-operative anaesthetic counselling. The local population appears to place greater importance on rare but serious complications compared to common complications. This illustrates the need to contextualize information provided during informed consent to strengthen the doctor-patient relationship. (shrink)

En este trabajo presentamos el proceso del ordenamiento, catalogación y curaduría de los materiales fotográficos de un antropólogo estadounidense que realizó trabajo de campo en Atlixco, Puebla, México, con indígenas de la etnia nahua en las décadas de 1970 y 1980La metodología utilizada para este trabajo se basó en una propuesta propia de catalogación mínima de materiales fotográficos.Concluimos que la catalogación mínima es adecuada para la interoperabilidad con los estándares internacionales y resulta fácil de aplicar en los contextos universitarios y (...) de archivos locales.
