    Hegel's Philosophy of Politics. [REVIEW]Philip Grier - 1993 - Review of Metaphysics 46 (4):838-840.
Hegel's philosophy of politics, according to Brod, is to be found primarily in the third part of the Philosophy of Right, supplemented by Hegel's historical writings and his philosophy of history. All of these need to be read in the context of some knowledge of contemporary political events. This approach to the Philosophy of Right sets aside the question of how Hegel construed the unity of his own text and project, in order to use a portion of the text as (...)

Basic Laws of Arithmetic.Philip A. Ebert & Marcus Rossberg (eds.) - 1964 - Berkeley,: Oxford University Press UK.
This is the first complete English translation of Gottlob Frege's Grundgesetze der Arithmetik, with introduction and annotation. The importance of Frege's ideas within contemporary philosophy would be hard to exaggerate. He was, to all intents and purposes, the inventor of mathematical logic, and the influence exerted on modern philosophy of language and logic, and indeed on general epistemology, by the philosophical framework.

Last Chance Therapies and Managed Care: Pluralism, Fair Procedures, and Legitimacy.Norman Daniels & James E. Sabin - 1998 - Hastings Center Report 28 (2):27-42.
How can health plans make fair determinations about when “experimental” (and costly) treatments such as high dose chemotherapy with autologous bone marrow transplantation should be covered despite lack of clear clinical consensus about their benefits? Different models for managing “last chance” therapies evolving in some health plans offer promising examples of how issues of fairness and legitimacy in decisionmaking can be addressed.

Lin, Debbe McCall, Vinit Nair, Sean D. Pokorney, Cheryl N. McMahill-Walraven, Christopher B. Granger & Richard Platt - 2019 - Hastings Center Report 49 (4):18-26.
In 2012, a U.S. Institute of Medicine report called for a different approach to health care: “Left unchanged, health care will continue to underperform; cause unnecessary harm; and strain national, state, and family budgets.” The answer, they suggested, would be a “continuously learning” health system. Ethicists and researchers urged the creation of “learning health organizations” that would integrate knowledge from patient‐care data to continuously improve the quality of care. Our experience with an ongoing research study on atrial fibrillation—a trial known (...)

    Using Moral Distress for Organizational Improvement.James E. Sabin - 2017 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 28 (1):33-36.
Moral distress is a major problem for nurses, other clinicians, and the health system itself. But if properly understood and responded to, it is also a promising guide for healthcare improvement. When individuals experience moral distress or burnout, their reports must be seen as crucial data requiring careful attention to the individuals and to the organization. Distress and burnout will often point to important opportunities for system improvements, which may in turn reduce the experience of distress. For this potential virtuous (...)

How Can Clinical Ethics Committees Take on Organizational Ethics? Some Practical Suggestions.James E. Sabin - 2016 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 27 (2):111-116.
Although leaders in the field of ethics have for many years pointed to the crucial role that organizations play in shaping healthcare ethics, organizational ethics remains a relatively undeveloped area of ethics activity. Clinical ethics committees are an important source of potential expertise, but new skills will be required. Clinical ethics committees seeking to extend their purview to organizational issues will have to respond to three challenges—how to gain sanction and support for addressing controversial and sensitive issues, how to develop (...)

Comparing Drug Effectiveness at Health Plans: The Ethics of Cluster Randomized Trials.James E. Sabin, Kathleen Mazor, Vanessa Meterko, Sarah L. Goff & Richard Platt - 2008 - Hastings Center Report 38 (5):39-48.
"Cluster randomized trials," in which groups of patients are randomly assigned to different therapeutic interventions, provide a powerful way of evaluating drugs. CRTs have not been widely used, in good part because of concerns about whether patients must give informed consent to participate in them. A better understanding of how CRTs fit into clinical practice resolves the concerns.

The Adventitious Origins of the Calvinist Moral Subject.Philip G. Ziegler - 2015 - Studies in Christian Ethics 28 (2):213-223.
This paper argues that Calvin provides an account of the radical unmaking of the human moral subject at the hands of sin and its even more radical remaking at the hands of divine grace. The moral significance of human continuity during this soteriological transit, including such things as reason and will as such, is shown to be overreached by that of what becomes of the human creature in its history at the hands of both sin and God’s grace. Calvin’s treatment (...)

In this work, the prominent political philosopher Philip Pettit embarks on a massive undertaking to offers major new accounts of the foundations of the state and the nature of justice. In doing so Pettit builds a new theory of what the state is and what it ought to be, addresses the normative question of how justice serves as a measure of the success of a state, and the way it should operate in relation to its citizens and other people.

Tale of two countries: attitudes towards older persons in Italy and Israel during the COVID-19 pandemic as seen through the looking-glass of the media.Jacopo Fantinati, Irina Sabin, Silvia Crosignani, Yael Zilbershlag, Matteo Cesari & Tzvi Dwolatzky - 2022 - Journal of Medical Ethics 48 (12):1010-1014.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the many challenges and difficulties of healthcare systems caring for older frail people. This public health crisis has indeed jeopardised the concept of the welfare state, in particular the right of older people to uncompromised healthcare. Together with the clinical challenges facing the geriatric patient and the organisational difficulties of the healthcare systems, sociocultural factors may have also played a substantial role in the strategies that countries have applied in coping with the pandemic. In this (...)

Detoxifying the Concept of Rationing.James Sabin - 2014 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 25 (2):116-119.
Andrew Hantel’s proposal for dealing with cancer drug shortages exemplifies the kind of clinician-led discussion of rationing the U.S. political process requires. I argue that the U.S. will not get a grip on healthcare cost escalation until we set true budgets for healthcare. We will not be able to do that until the public accepts that rationing, done right, is an ethical necessity, not an ethical abomination. Because endorsing rationing is a third rail for politicians, “top down” leadership is currently (...)
