Cognitive function certainly poses the biggest challenge for computational neuroscience. As we argue, past efforts to build neural models of cognition (the target article included) had too narrow a focus on implementing rule-based language processing. The problem with these models is that they sacrifice the advantages of connectionism rather than building on them. Recent and more promising approaches for modeling cognition build on the mathematical properties of distributed neural representations. These approaches truly exploit the key advantages of connectionism, that is, (...) the high representational power of distributed neural codes and similarity-based pattern recognition. The architectures for cognitive computing that emerge from these approaches are neural associative memories endowed with additional mapping operations to handle invariances and to form reduced representations of combinatorial structures. Er hat darüber hinaus Forschungsfelder wie Ökonomie, Architektur (Werkbund und Bauhaus), Psychologie (Gestalttheorie) oder moderner Literatur mitbestimmt. Seine Wirkung reicht von sozialen Reformbewegungen (Siedlerbewegung) bis in die Kunst der Neuen Sachlichkeit.

Every student of the twentieth century has heard both of the great Viennese economist Friedrich von Hayek and of the equally great philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. But what isn't well known is that the two were distant cousins and that, shortly after Wittgenstein's death in 1951, Hayek set out to write a biography of his cousin. The project was derailed by Wittgenstein family members, who felt it was to soon to publish such a work - especially one like Hayek's, so (...) candid about his cousin's difficulties and depressions. But Hayek's draft acquired an underground readership, and Wittgensteins biographers have used it extensively. Here finally, is the text of that work itself - a true goldmine in being one great thinker's view of another, whom he knew personally, even if not well. Hayek's account has the great merit of being close to its subject; the draft, moreover sheds light, not only on Wittgenstein but on Hayek as well. (shrink)

BackgroundIn the Canadian Alliance for Healthy Hearts and Minds (CAHHM) cohort, participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, heart, and abdomen, that generated incidental findings (IFs). The approach to managing these unexpected results remain a complex issue. Our objectives were to describe the CAHHM policy for the management of IFs, to understand the impact of disclosing IFs to healthy research participants, and to reflect on the ethical obligations of researchers in future MRI studies.MethodsBetween 2013 and 2019, 8252 participants (...) (mean age 58 ± 9 years, 54% women) were recruited with a follow-up questionnaire administered to 909 participants (40% response rate) at 1-year. The CAHHM policy followed a restricted approach, whereby routine feedback on IFs was not provided. Only IFs of severe structural abnormalities were reported.ResultsSevere structural abnormalities occurred in 8.3% (95% confidence interval 7.7–8.9%) of participants, with the highest proportions found in the brain (4.2%) and abdomen (3.1%). The majority of participants (97%) informed of an IF reported no change in quality of life, with 3% of participants reporting that the knowledge of an IF negatively impacted their quality of life. Furthermore, 50% reported increased stress in learning about an IF, and in 95%, the discovery of an IF did not adversely impact his/her life insurance policy. Most participants (90%) would enrol in the study again and perceived the MRI scan to be beneficial, regardless of whether they were informed of IFs. While the implications of a restricted approach to IF management was perceived to be mostly positive, a degree of diagnostic misconception was present amongst participants, indicating the importance of a more thorough consent process to support participant autonomy.ConclusionThe management of IFs from research MRI scans remain a challenging issue, as participants may experience stress and a reduced quality of life when IFs are disclosed. The restricted approach to IF management in CAHHM demonstrated a fair fulfillment of the overarching ethical principles of respect for autonomy, concern for wellbeing, and justice. In this article we develop and defend what we call the “Trust View” of promissory obligation, according to which making a promise involves inviting another individual to trust one to do something. In inviting her trust, and having the invitation accepted (or at least not rejected), one incurs an obligation to her not to betray the trust that one has invited. The distinctive wrong involved in breaking a promise is a matter of violating this obligation. We begin by explicating the (...) core notion of “inviting someone to trust one to do something”, suggesting that it involves signaling to the other individual one's recognition of the importance the relevant action has for her, and one’s willingness to license her to have faith or optimism in one's character with regard to the performance of that action. We then turn to a defense of the Trust View, arguing that it has considerable appeal in its own right, that it is distinct from and superior to three similar accounts (T.M. Scanlon's Assurance View, Judith Jarvis Thomson's Reliance View and David Owens' Authority View), and that several objections to it can be answered. (shrink)

Der genaue Charakter dieser Schrift, die Grenzen neu zieht (so zwischen Metaphysik und Moral auf der einen und Religion auf der anderen Seite), aber auch überschreitet (so im literarischen Genus), läßt sich indessen nur schwer bestimmen. Die Reden waren Schleiermachers literarischer Erstling. Ihre Abfassung fällt in die Zeit der intensiven Freundschaft und Zusammenarbeit mit Friedrich Schlegel, sie zeugen aber bereits von der Eigenständigkeit und Originalität der Schleiermacherschen Gedanken innerhalb des frühromantischen Freundeskreises. Die Entschiedenheit, mit der Schleiermacher die Religion von (...) der Philosophie trennt, verbietet es, die Reden umstandslos als einen philosophischen Text zu lesen. Doch diese Trennung verliert dort an Schärfe, wo er die Religion ausdrücklich ins Verhältnis zur Philosophie setzt und nicht nur die Philosophie betreffende Thesen vertritt, sondern auch philosophische Positionen für sein Religionsverständnis vereinnahmt. Dies geschieht vor allem dort, wo die Religion als 'Gefühl des Unendlichen' bzw. 'Sehnsucht' nach dem Unendlichen spekulative Bedeutung erlangt. Die Religion, so führt Schleiermacher aus, bilde das 'Gegengewicht' zu dem "Triumph der Spekulation [...], dem vollendeten und gerundeten Idealismus", indem sie ihn "einen höheren Realismus ahnden läßt als den, welchem er so kühn und mit so vollem Recht sich unterordnet". Schon unter rein historischem Aspekt muß es verwundern, daß die deutsche philosophische Forschung das Werk des englischen Dichters, Literaturkritikers und Philosophen Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) nahezu aus den Augen verlor: Der Begründer der englischen Romantik und scharfe Kritiker des Empirismus seiner Landsleute stand in unmittelbarem Dialog mit den literarischen und philosophischen Exponenten des deutschen Idealismus und vertrat in seinem literarischen und essayistischen Werk eine unmittelbar aus der Auseinandersetzung mit Kant, Fichte und insbesondere Schelling hervorgegangene phil...

Seit der Einführung der G‑DRGs als Instrument zur Vergütung von Krankenhausleistungen steht das Gesundheitswesen als System unter Kritik. Denn die Ausrichtung der Krankenhäuser auf wirtschaftlichen Erfolg relativiert den Anspruch aller Bürgerinnen und Bürger auf gute medizinische Versorgung. Der Artikel geht der Frage nach, von welchem Akteur im System welche Aktivität erzwungen, erwartet, oder verlangt werden kann, dem entgegenzuwirken. Die genannten alltagsmoralischen Urteile werden unter Rückgriff auf Kants Moralphilosophie validiert und auf die wichtigsten Akteure angewandt. Ergebnis: Der Kern des Ökonomisierungs‑/Kommerzialisierungs-Problems besteht (...) in der Entwertung der Professionalität der patientennahen Berufe. Die Neujustierung des Systems kann vom Gesetzgeber nur dann verlangt werden, wenn die verfasste Ärzteschaft sich dazu bekennt, mit den ihr zu Gebote stehenden Mitteln gegen professionswidrige Handlungsanreize vorzugehen.
