A Network is a Network is a Network: Reflections on the Computational and the Societies of Control.David M. Berry & Alexander R. Galloway - 2016 - Theory, Culture and Society 33 (4):151-172.
In this wide-ranging conversation, Berry and Galloway explore the implications of undertaking media theoretical work for critiquing the digital in a time when networks proliferate and, as Galloway claims, we need to ‘forget Deleuze’. Through the lens of Galloway’s new book, Laruelle: Against the Digital, the potential of a ‘non-philosophy’ for media is probed. From the import of the allegorical method from excommunication to the question of networks, they discuss Galloway’s recent work and reflect on the (...)

A critical realist exploration of entrepreneurship as complex, reflexive and myriad.Isla Kapasi, Laura Galloway & Lakshman Wimalasena - 2021 - Journal of Critical Realism 20 (3):257-279.
ABSTRACT This paper builds on previous studies that explore entrepreneurship from a critical realist morphogenetic perspective, and incorporates the neglected aspect of how agential reflexivity shapes entrepreneurship. Using the morphogenetic framework and its typology of reflexive modes, we analyse 78 work and life histories gathered from Sri Lanka with the aim of understanding reflexive entrepreneurial action. Our findings suggest that, while autonomous reflexives match the common understanding of entrepreneurship, i.e. that it is individualistic and wealth-driven, nevertheless the other reflexive modalities (...)

    Golden Age of Analog.Alexander R. Galloway - 2022 - Critical Inquiry 48 (2):211-232.
Digital and analog: What do these terms mean today? The use and meaning of such terms change through time. The analog, in particular, seems to go through various phases of popularity and disuse, its appeal pegged most frequently to nostalgic longings for nontechnical or romantic modes of art and culture. The definition of the digital vacillates as well, its precise definition often eclipsed by a kind of fever-pitched industrial bonanza around the latest technologies and the latest commercial ventures. One common (...)

Land Use and Zoning for the Public’s Health.Bruce Bragg, Thomas Galloway, Doug B. Spohn & Donne E. Trotter - 2003 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 31 (s4):78-80.
It is important to re-engage public health professionals, after an absence of almost a half a century, in the issues of land development and community design. Resources should be devoted to processes that directly engaged diverse communities in defining their idea of good public health. In Michigan, within demographic communities, the idea or definition is slightly different, but an agreement was reached that activities should be developed around four basic environmental areas: food, air, water, and land use. Resource teams were (...)

Laruelle: Against the Digital.Alexander R. Galloway - 2014 - Minneapolis: Univ of Minnesota Press.
_Laruelle_ is one of the first books in English to undertake in an extended critical survey of the work of the idiosyncratic French thinker François Laruelle, the promulgator of non-standard philosophy. Laruelle, who was born in 1937, has recently gained widespread recognition, and Alexander R. Galloway suggests that readers may benefit from colliding Laruelle’s concept of the One with its binary counterpart, the Zero, to explore more fully the relationship between philosophy and the digital. In _Laruelle_, Galloway argues (...)

Exploring how healthcare teams balance the neurodynamics of autonomous and collaborative behaviors: a proof of concept.Ronald Stevens & Trysha L. Galloway - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Team members co-regulate their activities and move together at the collective level of behavior while coordinating their actions toward shared goals. In parallel with team processes, team members need to resolve uncertainties arising from the changing task and environment. In this exploratory study we have measured the differential neurodynamics of seven two-person healthcare teams across time and brain regions during autonomous and collaborative segments of simulation training. The questions posed were: whether these abstract and mostly integrated constructs could be separated (...)

  42. Reconsidering emancipatory education: Staging a conversation between Paulo Freire and Jacques Rancière.Sarah Galloway - 2012 - Educational Theory 62 (2):163-184.
In this essay Sarah Galloway considers emancipation as a purpose for education through examining the theories of Paulo Freire and Jacques Rancière. Both theorists are concerned with the prospect of distinguishing between education that might socialize people into what is taken to be an inherently oppressive society and education with emancipation as its purpose. Galloway reconstructs the theories in parallel, examining the assumptions made, the processes of oppression described, and the movements to emancipation depicted. In so doing, she (...)

Excommunication: Three Inquiries in Media and Mediation.Alexander R. Galloway, Eugene Thacker & McKenzie Wark - 2013 - University of Chicago Press.
Always connect—that is the imperative of today’s media. But what about those moments when media cease to function properly, when messages go beyond the sender and receiver to become excluded from the world of communication itself—those messages that state: “There will be no more messages”? In this book, Alexander R. Galloway, Eugene Thacker, and McKenzie Wark turn our usual understanding of media and mediation on its head by arguing that these moments reveal the ways the impossibility of communication is (...)
