Rudolf Bode’s text Rhythm and its Importance for Education (published by Eugen Diederich, Jena, 1920) has both a theoretical and a practical aim: to clarify the nature of the rhythm phenomenon in order to lay down the foundations of ‘Rhythmic Gymnastics’. Bode engages with the work of his contemporaries, such as Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, Karl Buecher and Ludwig Klages, and comes to identify rhythm with a continuum devoid of rationality. The text is unique in its ability to meaningfully (...) connect such diverse fields as philosophy, gymnastics, anthropology and politics and shows, in this way, the potential of ‘rhythmanalysis’. The translation of Rudolf Bode’s Rhythm and its Importance for Education and Rudolf Laban’s ‘Eurhythmy and kakorhythmy in art and education’ aims at unearthing rhythm-related discourses in the Germany of the 1920s. If for most of the English-speaking world the translation of Henri Lefebvre’s Rhythmanalysis: Space, Time and Everyday Life marks the moment in which rhythm descends into the theoretical arena, these texts, seen in their connection with other sources, express, instead, the degree to which rhythm was (...) omnipresent in philosophical, artistic, socio-economical and psychological discourses at the turn of the 20th century. Some commentators, such as Lubkoll, have recently highlighted the centrality of rhythm in Modernity, lamenting a lack of scholarship focusing on this phenomenon. This is arguably due to a lack of access to sources accentuated by the language barrier; if, indeed, the ‘rhythmanalysis’ of the turn of the century is not an exclusively Teutonic phenomenon, it is also true that a copious amount of material on rhythm of this period is written in German and remains untranslated. In this sense, then, this translation aims at contributing to the project of a cultural history of rhythm. (shrink)

This article seeks to reconstruct and critically extend Jacques Derrida’s critique of Edmund Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology. Derrida’s critique of Husserl is explored in three main areas: the phenomenology of language, the phenomenology of time, and the phenomenological constitution of ideal objects. In each case, Husserl’s analysis is shown to rest upon a one-sided determination of truth in terms of presence—whether it be the presence of expressive meaning to consciousness, the self-presence of the temporal instant, or the complete presence of an (...) ideal object through intuition. At every juncture, Derrida’s reasoning is deployed in order to demonstrate how presence is irreducibly bound up with absence and otherness and thus how the ideal of a phenomenological self-presence of consciousness is itself an abstraction from the contingency of history and our concrete embeddedness within a particular lifeworld. The article concludes with an appraisal of reason’s limits in a time of technological domination and the threat of global annihilation. Rather than a flight into irrationalism or skepticism, the author advocates a deepening of philosophical responsibility and an ethics of undecidability as essential for meeting the challenges of modernity. The concept of event provides the essential bridge from the realm of virtuality of the quantum state to real phenomena in space and time. We ask how much we can gather from existing theory about the localization of an event and point out that decoherence and coarse graining—though important—do not suffice for a consistent interpretation without the additional principle of random realization.

Relying on Husserl as well as on the reflections by Merleau-Ponty on Cézanne, Henry on Kandinsky and Deleuze on Bacon, this essay sketches some basic problems that arise in a phenomenological account of non-figurative painting. An investigation of the distinction between phenomenological and pictorial perception, of the transposition of the painter’s mode of perception into a painted image, and of the expressive force of paintings inevitably confronts one with the enigma of the appearing of something invisible. The essay proceeds in (...) three steps. The first step describes pictorial perception in terms of a ‘seeing according to’. Such a mode of perception pays attention to visual ambiguities, to the ‘gaze of things’ and to the conditions of visibility that are ordinarily overlooked. The second step moves on to the issue of the transposition of a pictorial perception in a painted image. Deleuze’s account of “manipulated chance” proves to be very helpful here. In the final step, Henry’s and Deleuze’s emphasis on the painting’s expression of totally invisible ‘forces’ is discussed. (shrink)

Daher denken sie über Mittel und Methoden nach, die sie bis dahin verwendet haben, und sie trachten danach, jene zu verbessern. Auch verschaffen sie (...) sich Klarheit darüber, was ihnen bis jetzt Erfolg brachte, und sie erkennen, daß es am besten ist, in der bewährten Weise fortzufahren. Es wird ihnen aber auch klar, was sie dar an gehindert hatte, noch erfolgreicher zu sein. Daß sie immer bewußter und immer kritischer werden, ist daher unvermeid lich. Manches, was früher als "Wissen" galt, wird jetzt verworfen. Levinas' Heidegger-Kritik, der in seinem Totalité et Infini zweifellos grundlegende Bedeutung zukommt, stürzt zunächst in Verwirrung : der Begriff der Totalität, in dem nach Levinas Heideggers ontologisches Denken befangen bleibt, scheint nur ein solcher für das Sein des Seienden als solchen und im Ganzen zu sein, Levinas' Idee eines diese Totalität transzendierenden „Unendlichen” aber eher Heideggers Gedanken des Seins selbst nahezukommen ; der Unterschied zwischen Totalität und Unendlichem, den Levinas begründet, scheint fast ein Gleiches zu bedeuten wie die „ontologische Differenz” (...) bei Heidegger, hinwiederum aber bleibt für Levinas das Sein offenbar die bloße Totalität des Seienden, indessen es ein Seiendes par excellence, nämlich der Andere ist, das unendlich die Totalität übersteigt, auf die alle Ontologie das Sein des Seienden reduziert. Aber die reduktiven Tendenzen in Heideggers ontologischem Denken, auf die Levinas kritisch hinweist, sind in der Tat unverkennbar ; sie finden ihren schärfsten Ausdruck in Heideggers ausdrücklicher Zurückweisung der Ethik als einer eigenständigen philosophischen Aufgabe. Die zur Debatte stehenden Positionen lassen sich klären im Rückgang auf Husserl : dessen Denken scheint zwiegespalten zwischen der Reduktionsforderung, die hervorgeht aus dem Verlangen nach einem absolut Gegebenen als „adäquat” Gegebenem, und dem Festhalten an der Gegebenheit auch von solchem, was nie adäquat gegeben sein kann, als einer „originären”. Vielleicht trifft es zu, daß Heidegger bei all seiner Kritik am Begriff der Wahrheit als Adäquation doch aufs entschiedenste Husserls Tendenz zum Rückgang auf adäquate Gegebenheit, also die Tendenz der Reduktion vertieft hat, indessen Levinas -nach dem Vorgange von Merleau-Ponty -strenger auf dem eigenen Rechtsgrund des inadäquat Gegebenen als eines Ursprünglichen besteht. Hier geht es vor allem um die „Gegebenheit” des Anderen, die nach Levinas in primärer und originärer Weise ein moralisches Verhalten fordert -auch und gerade schon da, wo es sich „zunächst” um die „bloße Erkenntnis” des Anderen handelt. So ist es schließlich Levinas' Idee, daß überhaupt die Ethik die philosophische Funktion der notwendigen Selbstkritik aller Philosophie hat, in der diese ihre Geschlossenheit durch das Ausbleiben des Anderen unendlich in Frage zu stellen aufgefordert ist. Mag Levinas' Heidegger-Kritik in gewissem Sinne selbst sich auf einen Gedanken gründen, der Heideggers Idee der ontologischen Differenz verwandt ist, mögen ohne den Blick auf diese Idee die Streitfragen undeutlich bleiben, die jene Kritik aufwirft, es sind doch Fragen, die in ein Dunkel eindringen, das der „ontologischen” Aufhellung sich bislang entzogen hat. The article traces out the history of the evolution in meaning of the phenomenological reduction in husserl's writings. The starting point is husserl's conviction that what is lacking most to philosophy as well as to science is a truly rigorous scientific method. Already in the "logical investigations" (1901) the phenomenological reduction is presented as the core of this method. But here this reduction is understood as a deliberate restriction or limitation of the mind to what is adequately perceived in an (...) "adequately fulfilling intuition" within the immanence of consciousness, Excluding any transcendence. In his lectures on "the idea of phenomenology" a significant expansion of the notion of reduction begins to appear. There is still the insistence on the absolutely given, But this now begins to include a certain "real transcendence" extending beyond the sphere of "real immanence to consciousness." this change appears first in his published works in the "ideas" of 1913. This text translated here (first published in Die Tat in May 1921) is an early elaboration of Rudolf Laban’s polyrhythmic ontology. The phenomenon of rhythm here takes shape through the manifold ways in which it resonates in the text (Ur-rhythm, Eu-rhythm, Kako-rhythm). Besides positing a fundamental co-dependency between rhythm, movement and space, Laban sees rhythm here also as the gateway to a socio-ethical dimension culminating in the Festival, or art of celebration.

From the Introduction: The papers collected in this book are based on the assumption that art, as any other activity of the mind, is subject to psychology, accessible to understanding, and needed for any comprehensive survey of mental functioning. The author believes, furthermore, that the science of psychology is not limited to measurements under controlled laboratory conditions, but must comprise all attempts to obtain generalizations by means of facts as thoroughly established and concepts as well defined as the investigated situation (...) permits. Therefore the psychological findings offered or referred to in these papers range all the way from experiments in the perception of shape or observations on the art work of children to broad deliberations on the nature of images or of inspiration and contemplation. It is also assumed that every area of general psychology calls for applications to art. The study of perception applies to the effects of shape, color, movement, and expression in the visual arts. Motivation raises the question of what needs are fulfilled by the production and reception of art. The psychology of the normal and the disturbed personality searches the work of art for manifestations of individual attitudes. And social psychology relates the artist and his contribution to his fellow men. A systematic book on the psychology of art would have to survey relevant work in all of these areas. My papers undertake nothing of the kind. They are due to one man's outlook and interest, and they report on whatever happened to occur to him. They are presented together because they turn out to be concerned with a limited number of common themes. Often, but unintentionally, a hint in one paper is expanded to full exposition in another, and different applications of one and the same concept are found in different papers. I can only hope that the many overlappings will act as unifying reinforcements rather than as repetitions. These papers represent much of the output of the quarter of a century during which I have been privileged to live, study, and teach in the United States. To me, they are not so much the steps of a development as the gradual spelling-out of a position. For this reason, I have grouped them systematically, not chronologically. For the same reason, I did not hesitate to change the words I wrote years ago wherever I thought I could clarify their meaning. Removed from my original intimacy with the content, I approached the text as an unprepared reader, and when I stumbled, I tried to repair the road. In some instances, I recast whole sections, not in order to bring them up to date, but in the hope of saying better what I meant at the time. Some of the earlier papers led to my book, _Art and Visual Perception_, which was written in 1951 and first published in 1954- Sections of the articles on perceptual abstraction, on the Gestalt theory of expression, and on Henry Moore are incorporated in that book. Others continued where the book left off, for instance, the attempts to describe more explicitly the symbolism conveyed by visual form. The short piece on inspiration provided the substance for the introductory chapter on creativity in my more recent book, Picasso's Guernica. Finally, in rereading the material, I was surprised to find how many passages point to what is shaping up as my next task, namely, a presentation of visual thinking as the common and necessary way of productive problem solving in any human activity. Ten of the papers in this book were first published in the _Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism_. To mention this is to express my indebtedness to the only scholarly periodical in the United States devoted to the theory of art. In particular, Thomas Munro, its first editor, showed a great trust in the contribution of psychology. He made me feel at home among the philosophers, art historians, and literary critics whose lively propositions inhabit the hostel he founded and sustained. To him, as well as to my friends of the University of California Press, who are now publishing my fourth book, I wish to say that much of what I thought about in these years might not have been cast into final writing, had it not been for their sympathy, which encouraged the novice and keeps a critical eye on the more self-assured pro. There are a few scientific papers here, originally written for psychological journals but free, I hope, of the terminological incrustation that would hide their meaning from sight. There are essays for the educated friend of the arts. And there are speeches, intended to suggest practical consequences for art education, for the concerns of the artist, and for the function of art in our time. These public lectures are hardly the products of a missionary temperament. In fact, I marveled why anybody would go to a theorist for counsel, illumination, and reassurance in practical matters. Es ist die der klassischen griechischen Philosophie entstammende Idee, daß wahres Wissen, und mithin grundlegend auch für jede erfolgversprechende Praxis, allein rein theoretisches Wissen sei. Dieses Wissen fordert Objektivität, weil es für das einzig Wirkliche das in sich und an sich Bestimmte hält und Wahrheit (...) nur in der Anpassung an das an sich so Seiende erblickt. Die Neuzeit ist das Zeitalter, in dem Philosophie und Wissenschaft diese überkommene Idee einerseits praktisch, andererseits auch selbst erst theoretisch zu verwirklichen unternehmen. Die bald rasch sich aufhäufenden praktischen Erfolge der modernen Wisenschaft sind bekannt. Die Versuche zu einer streng wissenschaftlichen Begründung rein theoretischen Wissens im Sinne der Idee dieses Wissens selbst, welche die Geschichte der Philosophie der Neuzeit von Descartes bis Fichte ausfüllen, führen indessen zu einer unwiderstehlich zunehmenden Einsicht in die Wirklichkeitsfremdheit der Idee rein theoretischen Wissens. Fichte zuerst sah zwischen Wissenim Sinne dieser Idee - und Realität eine unüberwindliche Kluft sich auftun. Angesichts dessen hat sich Hegel, um diese Idee zu retten, auf die verzweifelte Auskunft verlegt, dieses Wissen absolut zu setzen. Damit konnte er jederlei Bedenken, welches sich vom absoluten Standpunkt des Wissens entfernte und auf die Realität verweisen wollte, den Weg verlegen. Die Aufhebung aller Realität im absolut gesetzten Wissen aber, behauptete Hegel, bewahre in Wahrheit das Ganze, welches an ihr allein das Wahre sei. Dies nachzuweisen, diente ihm das Mittel der „Dialektik”, welche auf einer systematischen Verwechslung von notwendigen Möglichkeitsbedingungen und zureichenden Gründen beruht. Indem jedoch Hegel die Idee rein theoretischen Wissens absolut setzte und somit der Forderung entzog, sie ihren eigenen theoretischen Ansprüchen gemäß streng wissenschaftlich zu begründen und zu verwirklichen, machte er das Wissen selbst zum bloßen Glaubensgegenstande einer Weltanschauung. Husserl andererseits teilte zwar diesen Glauben, doch erneuerte er unter der Losung „Philosophie als strenge Wissenschaft” jene Forderung, damit aber jenen seit den Cartesianischen Meditationen eingeleiteten kritischen Prozeß, der nunmehr scheint, das Urteil aufzunötigen: Rein theoretisches Wissen ist selbst nur praktisch zu verwirklichen auf den Boden einer Weltanschauung, welche als solche im Widerspruch steht zu den Forderungen des Wissens selber. Der Versuch einer selbst streng wissenschaftlichen Verwirklichung der Idee rein theoretischen Wissens hingegen, den zuletzt Husserl unternahm, zwang die phänomenologische Philosophie zu einer Umwertung der Idee des Wissens. In Wirklichkeit ist theoretisches Wissen nicht Wissen, sojern und weil es rein theoretisches ist, sondern sofern es das nicht und wiewohl es nur theoretisches ist. (shrink)

Mit dem vorliegenden Beitrag sucht der Verf. eine Begründung für die auch von anderen Phänomenologen geteilte Meinung zu geben, daß einer entschiedenen Auswirkung der „wesentlich neuen” Intentionen der Phänomenologie die ihr von Husserls selbst gegebene transzendentalphilosophische Formulierung im Wege steht. Zum Zweck der Begründung dieser Meinung wird die Idee der Transzendentalphilosophie — den schwankenden Umschreibungen Husserls und schon Kants gegenüber - bestimmt als die einer Theorie der notwendigen Bedingungen der Möglichkeit des Gegebenseins von etwas überhaupt, verbunden mit der Idee des (...) Vorrangs einer solchen Theorie notwendiger Möglichkeitsbedingungen. Diese Bestimmung gestattet alsdann, Husserls transzendentalen Idealismus als einen solchen zu bestimmen, welcher das - seinerseits transzendental genannte -Bewußtsein als notwendige Möglichkeitsbedingung der Realität setzt, keineswegs etwa als deren zureichenden Grund. Damit unterscheidet sich ein so bestimmter transzendentaler Idealismus in scharfem Gegensatz von einem Idealismus wie dem Fichtes, welcher die Intelligenz als den zureichenden Grund der Realität nachzuweisen sucht. Doch damit nicht genug. Nach der Darlegung Fichtes wäre zu eben diesem Nachweis - der Intelligenz als zureichenden Grundes der Realität als erfordert, die Realität als notwendige Bedingung der Möglichkeit der Intelligenz selber auszuweisen. Der „kritische” Idealismus Fichtes verbindet sich somit mit einem fundamentalen Realismus. Die von Fichte charakterisierte philosophische Gegenposition zu der seinigen, die eines „dogmatischen” Materialismus, bestünde in der Behauptung der materiellen Realität als zureichenden Grundes der Intelligenz oder des Bewußtseins und erforderte den Nachweis des Bewußtseins als notwendiger Möglichkeitsbedingung der Realität. Einen solchen Materialismus hat in der Tat, unter der Bezeichnung eines „dialektischen”, Friedrich Engels vertreten, der ihn deutlich von einem bloß mechanischen Materialismus im geläufigen Sinne des modernen Wissenschaftspositivismus abgrenzt, welcher sich auf die Hervorhebung der in der materiellen Realität gelegenen notwendigen Möglichkeitsbedingungen auch des Bewußtseins beschränkt, indessen der „dialektische” Materialismus die Materie als den zureichenden Grund einer notwendigen Entwicklung, zuletzt auch von menschlicher Intelligenz behauptet. So impliziert der „dialektische” Materialismus - nach den Begriffen Fichtes - von sich aus einen fundamentalen Idealismus, und ein transzendentaler Idealismus wie der von Husserl vertretene droht zur bloßen Fundamentalbetrachtung für die evolutionistische Metaphysik eines „dialektischen” Materialismus zu degenerieren. Die transzendentalphilosophische Formulierung der Phänomenologie stellte sich so in den Dienst der Befestigung einer extremen Form des uns alle beherrschenden Objektivismus, den zu durchbrechen doch die maßgebliche Intention einer phänomenologischen Philosophie bleiben muß. Bezüglich der klassischen Debatte um Idealismus und Realismus oder Materialismus ergibt sich, daß sich die Vordergrundsgegensätze der Positionen von Bewußtsein oder Intelligenz und Realität oder Materie verwischen und das wahre Problem im Hintergrund dieser Debatten ein in ihnen bisher kaum ausdrücklich berührtes ist : das der Ambivilenz der Grundverhältnisse, welcher zufolge zureichende Gründe die ihrer notwendigen Möglichkeitsbedingungen, notwendige Möglichkeitsbedingungen die ihrer zureichenden Gründe sind. From the Christian perspective, creation exists through the Word of God. The Word of God does not create God again but brings forth the absolute “otherness” of God: creation. The nature of God is to exist. God is existence as unity in the diversity of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The gift of created existence reflects the triune nature of the Word of God. It is synthesis of diversity into unity that creates. Nature brings forth new (...) existence by unifying what it already brought forth previously. Therefore, the creative process of nature is self‐similar and nonlinear: self‐similar because at all levels it is synthesis that brings forth novelty; nonlinear because the properties of the new unities are not present in their (isolated) elements. The new properties of the wholes, however, do not destroy the properties of the parts. Rather, the elements integrated into new wholes become creatively transformed. This is because the parts become carriers of the whole, which transforms the parts through its presence. The parts become and express the qualities of the whole, qualities that the parts do not possess in isolation. Synthesis, therefore, transforms the parts creatively, because synthesis is creative. The qualities of the parts become “elevated” because the whole becomes present in and through the parts. The understanding of creation as the result of sequential, creative transformations offers a glance into the mystery of the Word of God present in the Eucharist. Here, too, the elements of bread and wine are not destroyed but elevated, creatively transformed into the Word of God. The elements (bread and wine) become the carrier of a transcendent “quality,” the Word of God. From this perspective, creation and the sacrament of the Eucharist illuminate each other. This is because the Word of God that creates the otherness of creation and the Word of God present in the Eucharist is the same. (shrink)
