This book offers a fresh look at Edmund Husserl’s philosophy as a nonfoundational approach to understanding the self as an embodied presence. Contrary to the conventional view of Husserl as carrying on the Cartesian tradition of seeking a trustworthy foundation for knowledge in the "pure" observations of a disembodied ego, James Mensch introduces us to the Husserl who, anticipating the later investigations of Merleau-Ponty, explored how the body functions to determine our self-presence, our freedom, and our sense of time. The (...) result is a concept of selfhood that allows us to see how consciousness’s arising from sensuous experiences follows from the temporal features of embodiment. From this understanding of what is crucial to Husserl’s phenomenology, the book draws the implications for language and ethics, comparing Husserl’s ideas with those of Derrida on language and with those of Heidegger and Levinas on responsibility. Paradoxically, it is these postmodernists who are shown to be extending the logic of foundationalism to its ultimate extreme, whereas Husserl can be seen as leading the way beyond modernity to a nonfoundational account of the self and its world. Edmund Husserl's philosophy has often been conceived and commented on as a theory that represents the scientific and cognitive branch of thinking within the tradition of continental philosophy. His Logical Investigations thematizes the connection between language and logic and his Ideas I thematizes an alternative way of analyzing consciousness and mind. This collection is the final volume of a four book survey of the state of phenomenology fifty years after the death of Edmund Husserl. This paper argues that Hegel and Rorty agree in rejecting foundationalism, but diverge significantly in their critiques of it, with important consequences for their visions of postfoundational discourse. An analysis of the Phenomenology of Spirit indicates how Hegel effects a thoroughly immanent critique of foundationalism. In contrast, the flaws of Rorty’s critique are shown to trap him in a cryptofoundationlism which undermines his efforts to endorse humanism, realism, and pluralism. Hegel’s successful transcendence of foundationalism is disclosed as enabling (...) his postfoundational philosophy which succeeds in providing coherent articulations of the nature and truth of humanism, realism, and pluralism. The word "metacritique," as present in the title, strikes the American reader as strange. Perhaps the closest English translation of the title would be "Philosophy of Formal Logic." For what is in question is not the formal structure of logic; instead, the question is: What is the relation between formal logic and the world? The thesis that Eley seeks to dislodge is that of nominalism. His interest is not in formal logic as such, but in the philosophical thesis purported by (...) logicians that formal logic has no intrinsic relation to the world but is, at best, an instrument for our scientific understanding of the world. This postfoundational, instrumental theory is for him nominalistic dogmatism. Correlative to this dogmatism is the transformation of the world into a "technical world of things" or, as he also contends, "the medium of an industrial society." Opposed to nominalism and such a technical world, Eley proposes a transcendental-phenomenological critique of formal logic by means of which the origin of formal logic in life-world structures is to be uncovered. Through such a return to the life-world, he believes he is able to reintegrate formal logic and the world. Insofar as those schematic operations essential to a logic of statements and an elementary predicate logic are to be traced to their origin in the life-world, the method employed is a genetic one. This article explores Bernard Stiegler’s philosophical approach to culture in dialogue with Oliver Marchart’s postfoundational framework and conflictual aesthetics. Through the exposition of two different cases of gestural devices, it exposes Stiegler’s potential postfoundational aesthetics as an attempt to establish the necessary conditions for re-thinking the grounded-ungrounded existing relationship between humans, technical objects, and the composition of potential realities to grasp from an autopoietic relationship. These artistic and cultural examples are considered critical concepts that enhance and interrupt the (...) philosophical discourse. The article argues that Stiegler’s aesthetics is committed to the capacity that art, as a technology of the spirit, can contribute as agency in shaping public power, even when these agents are not directly in conflict and develop lesser and fragile performative technics through which a memory becomes present again. Does thought have distinctive experiential features? Is there, in addition to sensory phenomenology, a kind of cognitive phenomenology--phenomenology of a cognitive or conceptual character? Leading philosophers of mind debate whether conscious thought has cognitive phenomenology and whether it is part of conscious perception and conscious emotion.

It is commonly believed that Edmund Husserl (1859-1938), well known as the founder of phenomenology and as the teacher of Heidegger, was unable to free himself from the framework of a classical metaphysics of subjectivity. Supposedly, he never abandoned the view that the world and the Other are constituted by a pure transcendental subject, and his thinking in consequence remains Cartesian, idealistic, and solipsistic. This paper examines the idea of "objective phenomenology," or a way of understanding the phenomenal character of conscious experiences that doesn’t require one to have had the kinds of experiences under consideration. My central thesis is that structural facts about experience—facts that characterize purely how conscious experiences are structured—are objective phenomenal facts. I begin by precisifying the idea of objective phenomenology and diagnosing what makes any given phenomenal fact subjective. Then I defend the view that structural facts about (...) experience are objective.
