Contractions of Closure Systems.Stephen Pollard & Norman M. Martin - 1994 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 35 (1):108-115.
This essay shows that some recent work by George Weaver can be reformulated in an especially perspicuous way within the theory of closure systems. Closure theoretic generalizations of some theorems of Robert Goldblatt are presented. And, more generally, the relation between closure systems and the deducibility relations of Goldblatt is explored.

    The domain of set-valued feature structures.M. Andrew Moshier & Carl J. Pollard - 1994 - Linguistics and Philosophy 17 (6):607-631.
It is well-known that feature structures can be fruitfully viewed as forming a Scott domain. Once a linguistically motivated notion of set value in feature structures is countenanced, however, this is no longer possible inasmuch as unification of set values in general fails to yield a unique result. In Pollard and Moshier 1990 it was shown that, while falling short of forming a Scott domain, the set of feature structures possibly containing set values satisfies the weaker condition of forming (...)

POLLARD ARGUES THAT IN MY EARLIER ARTICLE, "TRUTH FROM\nFICTION?", I UNDERESTIMATE THE STRENGTH OF THE POSITION\nTHAT WORKS OF FICTION CONTAIN OR IMPLY THEIR "MORALS" OR\n"MESSAGES." I ARGUE THAT HIS PROPOSED METHOD FOR\nDETERMINING SUCH TRUTHS PRODUCES ONLY PROPOSITIONS WHICH\nCAN BE CLAIMED TO BE TRUE OF THE WORK, AND NOT PROPOSITIONS\nWHICH HAVE A CLAIM TO TRUTH ABOUT THE REAL WORLD. IN\nADDITION, HE HAS FALLEN INTO A DIFFICULTY I PREDICTED FOR\nHIS SORT OF POSITION: HE HAS TO DEFEND THE CREDIBILITY OF\nTHE AUTHOR AS (...)

On Modeling Scope of Inflectional Negation.Alex Lascarides & Emily M. Bender - unknown
In this paper, we investigate the representation of negated sentences in Minimal Recursion Semantics (Copestake, Flickinger, Pollard, & Sag, 2005). We begin with its treatment in the English Resource Grammar (Flickinger, 2000, 2011), a broad-coverage implemented HPSG (Pollard & Sag, 1994), and argue that it is largely a suitable representation for English, despite possible objections. We then explore whether it is suitable for typologically different languages: namely, those that express sentential negation via inflection on the verb, particularly Turkish (...)

Rationality in the selection task: Epistemic utility versus uncertainty reduction.Jonathan St B. T. Evans & David E. Over - 1996 - Psychological Review 103 (2):356-363.
    M. Oaksford and N. Chater presented a Bayesian analysis of the Wason selection task in which they proposed that people choose cards in order to maximize expected information gain as measured by reduction in uncertainty in the Shannon-Weaver information theory sense. It is argued that the EIG measure is both psychologically implausible and normatively inadequate as a measure of epistemic utility. The article is also concerned with the descriptive account of findings in the selection task literature offered by Oaksford and (...)

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:EMOTION AND GOD: A REPLY TO MARCEL SAROT* DANIEL WESTBERG University of Virginia Charlottesville, Virginia M ARCEL SAROT has helpfully drawn attention to the question of St. Thomas's treatment of divine emotion; and in my view he rightly protests against the widely fashionable approach of rejecting the classical doctrine of impassibility in favor of a suffering and passible God. Nevertheless, I disagree sharply with his contentions (1) that emotion (...)

    Towards precision medicine; a new biomedical cosmology.M. W. Vegter - 2018 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 21 (4):443-456.
Precision Medicine has become a common label for data-intensive and patient-driven biomedical research. Its intended future is reflected in endeavours such as the Precision Medicine Initiative in the USA. This article addresses the question whether it is possible to discern a new ‘medical cosmology’ in Precision Medicine, a concept that was developed by Nicholas Jewson to describe comprehensive transformations involving various dimensions of biomedical knowledge and practice, such as vocabularies, the roles of patients and physicians and the conceptualisation of disease. (...)

The Greeks and Romans have been charged with destroying the ecosystems within which they lived. In this book, however, M. D. Usher argues rather that we can find in their lives and thought the origin of modern ideas about systems and sustainability, important topics for humans today and in the future. With chapters running the gamut of Greek and Roman experience – from the Presocratics and Plato to Roman agronomy and the Benedictine Rule – Plato's Pigs brings together unlikely bedfellows, (...)
