English summary: How can something which is absolutely unrepresentable be represented for the senses? In her studies of historical semantics of the concept of representation between 1750 and 1800, Petra Bahr shows that in the fields of aesthetics and religious theory this was a central question in the 18th century. From the perspective of the philosophy of religion, the significance of Baumgarten's Aesthetica and Kant's Critique of Judgment, two works which as a rule are perceived as competing philosophies of art, (...) has been reconstructed here in such a manner that Kant's lasting reference to Baumgarten's insights remains visible even in his overcoming of them. The paper presents a new proposal how to explain pictorial representation. Starting point is the phenomenological idea that pictures, in the first place, make something visible (instead of being a sign of something). Making something visible is taken as an achievement of the faculty of imagination, and the faculty of imagination in turn is taken to be a variety of our faculty to simulate (referring here to the concept of simulation as it is used in contemporary cognitive psychology, according to (...) which the ability to simulate e.g. other minds is the ability to reenact somebody else’s cognitive processes). Taken together, these pieces come down to the claim that pictorial representation of some x is simulating the perception of x with pictorial means; pictures prompt and guide such a simulation. Crucial is the addition »with pictorial means«. Picture-based simulation has constraints, which differ from those of perception and imagination. Therefore, in picture-based simulation perceptual processes are not simply copied but re-modeled and open to modification. The primary means of such modification are provided by the properties of pictures as material objects, such as their having a frame which encloses a two-dimensional surface. Hacker translates übersichtliche Darstellung as ‘surveyable representation’ and equates it with the tabulation of grammar. He asks what surveyability means, whether examples can be found in Wittgenstein’s work, and why this method characterizes the form of account he gives. In the history of philosophy, the question of time was ordinarily formulated by asking what time is. Yet, already Kant claimed that time is only accessible to us by representing it – a term that he introduced into the philosophical tradition. Accordingly, the question of time should be transformed into: How can time be represented? Furthermore, a closer examination of Kant’s example of representing time ‘under the image of a line, which we draw in thought’, makes evident that the time (...) represented depends, at least partially, on the characteristics of the concrete form of representation. I discuss this entanglement of the ways of representation and the concepts of time they represent, using the example of Eadweard Muybridges chronophotography: a snapshot, a series of snapshots and their projected moving image. Philosophies after Kant maybe more than ever, were confronted with a particular epistemic problem: how can representations correspond with the objects they refer to, that is, how is knowledge possible? Against Kant’s negative solution of the problem, proponents of German idealisms sought to establish a philosophical method that would close the gulf between what our concepts and the world they try to grasp. In his writings on a philosophy of nature, the young Schelling put forward methodological solution, which in interesting (...) ways relates to Kant’s statements on philosophical and mathematical methods of knowledge-acquisition. Far away from being a relapse into pre-critical philosophy, Schelling’s Naturphilosophie offers a solution to the epistemic aporia through the concept of Darstellung [presentation]. Taking up on Kant’s theory of mathematical presentation, Schelling devises a philosophical method capable of ‘presenting its concepts’. I take ‘presentation’ to denote a reflective performance, which describes the genesis of its object while simultaneously bringing it into existence. By means of his conception of scientific experiments, Schelling introduces a way of mediating the ideal realm of philosophical construction with real realm of material nature; it is the role of the experiment to make nature present itself. Political Representation: A Historical and Conceptual investigation into Its Polysemy The aim of this study is to value the complexity of theoretical formulations that different traditions and authors have provided on the problem of political representation. This is achieved by relying on a text that has pioneered this kind of investigation: Hasso Hofmann s Repräsentation: Studien zur Wort- und Begriffsgeschichte von der Antike bis ins 19. Jahrhundert. Hofmann s book, originally published in German in 1974, has not received due attention (...) in the contemporary debate on representation and is scarcely known in the non-German academic environment. However, its unique methodological and conceptual outlook on representation has much to contribute to the current debate on this topic. Hofmann s main objective is to draw a history and theory of representation that values the polysemy of the Latin word repraesentatio from Antiquity until the 19th century. To achieve this goal, Hofmann analyses the diverse meanings that have been attached to the word representation throughout its history, from its inception in the Latin world onwards. To prove the relevance of this approach for the contemporary debate, I apply Hofmann s semantic-conceptual map of representation to the study of political representation in such diverse authors as Marsilius of Padua, Carl Schmitt, Thomas Hobbes, Ernst Kantorowicz as well as contemporary authors such as Bernard Manin, Nadia Urbinati, Frank Ankersmit, John Dryzek and others. In so doing, I show that the answer to the question: what makes representation a political notion? is far from univocal. Moreover, I argue that Hofmann s interpretive lens provides an alternative approach to what is still considered the classical study of political representation in the Anglophone world: Hanna Pitkin s The Concept of Representation. By critically comparing Pitkin and Hofmann s approaches to the problem of political representation, my aim is to demonstrate that Pitkin s normative perspective should be revised. Pitkin argues, first, that it is possible to pinpoint a general meaning of the concept of representation as making present again and, second, that there is a general concept of political representation that is identified with substantive acting for and in which all aesthetic meanings of representation are excluded. In contrast to this approach, Hofmann stresses the polysemyc character of representation, and the impossibility of narrowing down a general meaning of the concept. Drawing on Hofmann, one can argue that the semantic richness of political representation is just as broad as that of the word representation itself and that what makes representation political varies from epoch to epoch, from author to author. As a result, the common way to look at political representation nowadays, i.e. as democratic representation, is far from the only one but constitutes, rather, just one of the numerous ways to look at this concept over time. Using Hofmann s perspective for the study of political representation also helps us show that the aesthetic meanings of representation are always and intrinsically bound up with political representation in all the authors who have theorized this concept. In contrast to Pitkin, one could argue that any meaningful concept of political representation must also include the aesthetic and symbolic meanings of representation. Accordingly, it is impossible to think of political representation without accounting for its symbolic dimension as Darstellung. (shrink)

In what follows, I will concentrate on the type of temporality which structures Wittgenstein's method of a perspicuous representation, or of a synoptic overview (übersichtliche Darstellung). I will argue that the temporal order which applies to (giving) a perspicuous representation is best to be described as retroactivity, deferred action or afterwardness (Nachträglichkeit), a concept which calls into question the ordinary conception of time as a linear and irreversible process as well as of a clear break between present and past. (...) First, I will turn to Sigmund Freud and the way he developed the concept of Nachträglichkeit or retroactivity in some of his case-studies. The basic idea here is that the meaning or content of a past experience is constituted by repeating it in a different or disguised way. I will then argue that the relation between a perspicuous representation and what is made perspicuous is best interpreted as a relation of Nachträglichkeit. This interpretation also accounts for the involvement of the subject in the object made perspicuous—as it is stressed by Wittgenstein and illustrated by his discursive method. (shrink)

L’article discute les conceptions respectives que le philosophe Ernst Cassirer et l’historien de l’art Erwin Panofsky se font de l’espace artistique. L’occasion en est donnée par une discussion lors du Kongress für Ästhetitk und Allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft (Congrès d’esthétique et de science de l’art) organisé à Hambourg en 1933 sur la question de l’espace et du temps artistiques. La perspective, considérée par Panofsky comme une forme symbolique, constitue un bon cas pour saisir les proximités et différences entre l’historien de l’art et (...) le philosophe des formes symboliques. L’espace de la perspective correspond-il à cet espace de l’art que le philosophe définit comme espace de la représentation (Darstellung)? À cet exemple de la perspective, exemple classique quoique souvent évoqué sans grande précision pour comparer les deux théoriciens, l’article en ajoute un autre, inédit, à savoir celui de la théorie des proportions. Peut-on dire que la théorie des proportions qui structure elle aussi la surface de l’image est, comme la perspective, une forme symbolique? La réponse permet de préciser la façon dont Cassirer et Panofsky construisent un lien entre art, représentation et subjectivité. I demonstrate that analogies, both explicit and implicit, between Wittgenstein’s discussion of rituals, aesthetics, and psychoanalysis (and, indeed, his own philosophical methodology) suggest that he entertained the idea that Freud’s psychoanalytic project, when understood correctly—that is, as a descriptive project rather than an explanatory-hypothetical one—provides a “surveyable representation” (übersichtliche Darstellung) of certain psychological facts (as opposed to psychological concepts). The consequences of this account are that it offers an explanation of Wittgenstein’s admiration for and self-perceived affinity to Freud, as (...) well as of his apparent “know-nothing approach” to empirical psychology. I wonder whether, according to Hermann Cohen, sculpture and paganism are necessarily bound together. What, then, is the meaning of artistic representation of Jesus Christ? Is he the ideal of an unification of God and Man?

The treatise is engaged in kant's too little noticed aesthetic doctrine of symbolic representation. It furthermore is occupied with the relevance which this doctrine has to enlighten the self-Estimation of literary criticism (theory of literature). The treatise results that kant's doctrine is to be considered as an offer to solve many problems in actually literary criticism (theory of literature).

I demonstrate that analogies, both explicit and implicit, between Wittgenstein’s discussions of rituals, aesthetics, and aspect-perception, have important payoffs in terms of understanding his notion of a “surveyable representation” (übersichtliche Darstellung) as it applies to phenomena that are not exclusively grammatical in nature. In particular, I argue that a surveyable representation of certain anthropological and aesthetic facts allows us to see, qua form of aspect-perception, internal relations and formal connections, so that the inner nature of a ritual or the (...) solution of an aesthetic puzzle is exhibited. This particular form of seeing both explains why Wittgenstein thought that hypothetical explanations about the origins of a ritual are irrelevant to appreciating its meaning and elucidates his understanding of rituals, which involves seeing “internal relations” and “formal connections.” The upshots of the account for work in anthropology are discussed. What are the similarities and the differences of icons from the same workshop depicting the same subject? An important portable icon with the representation of the Dormition of the Virgin, hitherto unknown, preserved today in the Art Collection of the University of Göttingen, helps answering this question. The studydeals with the fascinating journey of this icon from Venetian-dominated Crete in the 15th century to Germany of the 18th century. Furthermore, this paper shows that the icon of Göttingen belongs to a (...) group of a numerous icons that they all derive from the same icon-workshop of the renowned Cretan painters Andreas and Nikolaos Ritzos in Candia. Finally, it turned out that this icon was also the inspiration for Cretan painters of the 17th CE such as Emmanuel Lambardos and Viktor. (shrink)

Cet article a pour but de montrer comment le recours au concept de sphère, issu des travaux de la psychologie expérimentale de l’école de Würzburg, révèle une évolution remarquable du traitement de la signification (Bedeutung) par Karl Bühler dans ses recherches en psychologie puis en théorie du langage. En 1907, le concept de sphère était introduit comme le corrélat de la visée (meinen) dans le but de remettre en cause la définition de la signification comme association de représentations (Vorstellungen). Mais, (...) si le concept de visée apparaît alors comme le levier de l’argumentation, il ne constitue pas l’essence de la signification – laquelle se réalise dans les trois fonctions du modèle instrumental du langage. Or, le retour du concept de sphère au rang des « auxiliaires matériels » du champ symbolique de la représentation (Darstellung) dans la Théorie du langage, contribue à réévaluer les conditions de compréhension et de réalisation de la signification, en introduisant dans la fonction de représentation même une prise en compte des choses du monde sous la forme d’un savoir factuel. A Criticism of Poiëtical Reason. Remarks on Epistemological Philosophy of Technological Shaping. According to Aristoteles human reason can be divided into three independent properties: ϑεωρια,πραξισ, and πoιησισ. The latter is required for the technological construction of actuality. Scrutinizing to the conception of μιμησισ it can be figured out that technological acting intends a representation of truth, not an imitation of nature. The concept of nature developed by sciences of modern times is discussed in its lawful disposition. To give some features (...) of an epistemological philosophy of technological shaping first the difference between technological rules and laws of nature is examined. Second, three attributes of technological sciences in distinction to natural sciences are described. Finally, some shaping rules used by engineering sciences are presented. Es mag seltsam anmuten, Dialog und Undarstellbares zusammenzubringen. Was haben Probleme der Darstellung, gängigerweise im Bereich der Erkenntnistheorie, der Semiologie oder der analytischen Sprachphilosophie angesiedelt, mit solchen des Dialogs, der ja genuin sozialphilosophisch lokalisiert wird, gemein? Man erkennt eine Gemeinsamkeit, wenn man betrachtet, wie das Undarstellbare selbst Theorien zum Dialog herausfordert. Wird der Dialogbegriff von Undarstellbarem her gedacht, so wird er nicht einfach aus der Sozialphilosophie in die theoretische Philosophie übertragen, sondern verweist auf einen eigenen Sinn von Dialogizität in (...) der Theorie. Der Band schlägt also eine Reaktualisierung des Dialogbegriffs vor, die bspw. in den Bereichen Diskursanalyse, Sprachphilosophie und Ästhetik spielt. Diese Reaktualisierung bezieht sich besonders auf die Auseinandersetzung zwischen ‘deutscher' und ‘französischer' Philosophie und wird in drei Schritten entfaltet. In einem ersten Teil wird beleuchtet, wie Dialoge jenseits einer sozialphilosophischen Explikation aussehen könnten. Dann werden Einbrüche des Undarstellbaren in Diskurse nachgezeichnet. The concepts ‚Übersicht‘ (survey), ‚Übersichtlichkeit‘ (surveyability) and ‚Übersichtliche Darstellung‘ (surveyable representation) play a central role in Wittgenstein’s later philosophy. As Peter Hacker already noticed in 1972, an adequate English translation of these terms has “given Wittgenstein’s translators much trouble. Methoden. Im obigen Artikel ist die „Phylogenie des Stammbaumes” untersucht worden. Beginnend mitHaeckel werden 26 Typen phylogenetischer Symbole kritisch besprochen, d.h. nicht die Resultate, sondern nur die Methoden, z.B. bezüglich Systematik und Phylogenie, lebender und ausgestorbener Organismen, geologischer Perioden, Stufen und homologer Variationen, geographischer Verbreitung, Diversität, etwaiger Bedeutung der Einzelheiten, Mono-, Bi- und Polyrheithrie , usw. Der Faktor Zeit wird dabei für phylogenetische Systeme als der wesentlichste betrachtet. Der Autor hat daher in seinen- neuen Darstellungen die Begriffe „Zeit-Stufen” oder „Zeit-Globen-Oberflächen” (...) eingeführt; diese stehen senkrecht zum „Zeit-Radius”. Auf diesem Grunde wird ein neues Kriterium zur Unterscheidung systematischer und phylogenetischer Vorstellungen denjenigen anderer Autoren hinzugefügt. Erläuterungen. Nach einer Übersicht über die besprochenen Schemen im 1. Teil werden die Verhältnisse zwischen systematischen und phylogenetischen Darstellungen sowie die Verbindung ihrer Symbole untersucht. Es wird gezeigt, dass viele Einzelheiten solcher Konstruktionen oft, wissentlich oder unwissentlich, keine bestimmte Bedeutung haben. Der Verfasser hat versucht zu zeigen, dass es erwünscht wäre, möglichst mit allen Einzelheiten einer symbolischen Darstellung irgendeine Bedeutung zu verbinden: Linien und Entfernungen in der Ebene, Winkel in räumlichen Schemen. Die letztgenannten werden besonders für solche Arten von phylogenetischen Systemen empfohlen, bei denen der Faktor Zeit stets eine der Dimensionen bildet. Dieser Grundsatz wird mit der Evolution systematischer Einzelheiten in Verbindung gebracht, und Merkmals-Phyletik, homologe Variationen, Stufen, Polyrheithrie, Analogie und Homologie, Konvergenz und Verwandtschaft, etc. werden kurz im Lichte der Vererbungslehre besprochen. Es istHayata's extrem dynamischen Ansichten zu verdanken, dass das Statische in den systematischen und phylogenetischen Darstellungen aufgelockert worden ist. Méthodes. Dans l'article inséré ci-dessus il s'agit de ce qu'on pourrait appeler „la phylogénie de l'arbre généalogique”. En commençant parHaeckel , l'auteur discute 26 types divers de symboles phylogénétiques, c.à.d. seulement les méthodes , par exemple en ce qui concerne la taxonomie et la phylogénie, les organismes récents et éteints, les périodes géologiques, les niveaux et les variations homologues, la distribution géographique, la diversité, la signification éventuelle des détails, la mono-, bi- et polyrheithrie , etc. Le Temps est considéré comme l'élément le plus essentiel dans tout système phylogénétique. Par conséquence, l'auteur a introduit dans ses nouvelles représentations les idées de „Niveaux” ou de „Surfaces des Sphères du Temps” qui sont imaginés perpendiculaires au Radius-Temps. Dans l'ordre de ces idées un nouveau critère est ajouté à ceux donnés par d'autres auteurs pour la distinction des systèmes taxonomiques et des représentations phylogénétiques. Justifications. Après une récapitulation des systèmes, énumérés dans la première partie, les relations des constructions taxonomiques et phylogénétiques, ainsi que les connections de leurs symboles sont discutées. Souvent plusieurs détails sont, sciemment ou insciemment, dépourvus de toutes signification. L'auteur a essayé de démontrer qu'il serait désirable d'attribuer autant que possible de significations définies au détails d'une représentation symbolique de la nature décrite: aux lignes et aux distances dans le plan, aux angles dans l'espace. Les constructions tridimensionales sont particulièrement recommandées pour plusieurs systèmes phylogénétiques; dans de tels systèmes le Temps devrait toujours remplir la fonction d'une des dimensions. Ce principe est mis en rapport avec l'évolution des unités taxonomiques; phylogénie des charactères, variations homologues, niveaux, polyrheithrie, analogie et homologie, convergence et relations héréditaires, tous ces sujets sont brièvement discutés dans leurs rapports avec la Génétique. Selon l'opinion de l'auteur, c'est aux idées ultra-dynamiques d'Hayata que la taxonomie et la phylogénie doivent la pénétration féconde du dynamisme dans leurs systèmes trop souvent statiques. Kierkegaard’s critique of Hegel and Hegelianism anticipates major twentieth-century philosophical movements ranging from structuralism, existentialism, and phenomenology, to post-structuralism and postmodernism. This paper analyzes Kierkegaard’s interpretation of the relationship between subjectivity and temporality in pivotal passages in The Sickness Unto Death and The Concept of Anxiety. Heidegger’s account of the interplay between presentation (Darstellung) and representation (Vorstellung) imagination points to Kant’s theory of the imagination and suggests the way in which the Kierkegaardian subject is constituted by an irreducible alterity (...) that is never present but is always already past. The infinite qualitative difference of the divine is reflected in the inescapable interiority of the subject. Kierkegaard’s abyssal other returns in Barth’s wholly other God, Heidegger’s aletheia, Derrida’s différance, and Lacan’s real. For each of these writers, subjectivity is haunted by another it can neither exclude nor appropriate. This interior exteriority is the condition of the possibility of both desire and hope. (shrink)

Obgleich Fichte keine explizite philosophiegeschichtliche Ausarbeitung hinterließ, so ist doch mit der durch ihn vollzogenen "Revolution in der Philosophie" (Hegel) auch in der Problemsicht auf die Geschichte der Philosophie ein Paradigmenwechsel verbunden: Die in der Wissenschaftslehre vollzogene Ableitung der theoretischen und praktischen Philosophie war in der Geschichte der Philosophie der erste Versuch, die Deduktion der Kategorien als Form der Gedankenentwicklung des zu sich kommenden Begriffs (Phänomenologie) vorzustellen. Die Wissenschaftslehre unterscheidet sich vom natürlichen Bewusstsein und wird dadurch zur Wissenschaft, dass sie (...) die gegebene Struktur des Bewusstseins zugleich als Resultat einer Genesis auffasst, die dem empirischen Bewusstsein jedoch verborgen bleibt. Der in der wissenschaftlichen Darstellung sich vollziehende Nachvollzug dieser Entwicklung ist damit als abstrakter Reflex der wirklichen Geschichte des philosophischen Denkens vorgestellt. In einer solchen Sicht treten für Fichte die unterschiedlichen Gestalten philosophischen Denkens zunehmend aus ihrer Zufälligkeit des Wissens heraus, treten sie in ihrer Allgemeinheit und Wesentlichkeit hervor. The Wissenschaftslehre differs from natural consciousness and becomes a science in that it understands the given structure of consciousness as the result of a genesis that remains hidden from empirical consciousness. ZusammenfassungDer tragische Schluss der Emilia Galotti hat von Anfang an gespaltene Reaktionen hervorgerufen. Noch heute sind zahlreiche Missverständnisse im Umlauf. Stimmen, die seine fragwürdige Konstruktion bemängelten, verklangen bald. Stattdessen wurde nach Verantwortlichen für die Katastrophe gefahndet. Dass schon bald der Vater, Odoardo Galotti, in Haftung genommen wurde, liegt, so die These, nicht zuletzt an einer Umwidmung oder Neukonzeption des tragischen Opfers. Es wird mit zentralen Versatzstücken der zeitgenössischen Geschlechtersemantik aufgeladen und einer metadramaturgischen Reflexion unterzogen. Emilias Selbstopfer ist ein Opfer im (...) Wortsinn, es stattet die victima mit allen Attributen des sacrificiums aus. Und es ist ein Opfer, das maßgeblich von der Figur selbst in die Wege geleitet und vollzogen wird. Ein Großteil der nachfolgenden Dramatik arbeitet sich unter Übernahme der geschlechteranthropologischen Prämissen an diesem fulminanten Ende ab. Die Unterminierung einer bürgerlichen Würdekultur durch eine bald sich etablierende Kultur des Opfers setzte schon damals ein. Tatsächlich dokumentiert das Stück eine Krise der Tragödie. Wenn schon das Opfer selbst eine Darstellungsfunktion besitzt, dann steht bis heute zur Debatte, welche Funktion die Darstellung des Opfers besitzt.Ever since, the tragic ending of Emilia Galotti has stimulated divided reactions. Even today numerous misreadings occur. Voices which criticized its questionable or yet dubious construction soon faded. Instead of that, responsibles have been searched for. Especially Odoardo Galotti, Emilia’s father, has been taken into accountability. The reason for this, thus the claim, lies in a new conception of tragic sacrifice. It is being charged with central elements of contemporary gender anthropology. Furthermore, it undergoes a metadramaturgic reflection. Emilia’s self-sacrifice represents a genuine »Opfer« in the literal senses of victima and sacrificium. Actually, this sacrifice is significantly initiated and performed by the character itself. A major part of subsequent dramatic production is adopting the tragedy’s premises on gender anthropology while commenting on the fulminant ending. It is as early as this that a bourgeois culture of dignity is being undermined by a victimhood culture. The drama does in fact document a crisis of tragedy itself. If already sacrifice possesses a dimension of representation, a further question remains yet unanswered: Which function does representation of sacrifice fulfill? (shrink)

K.L. Reinhold’s interpretation of deduction plays a seminal role in the development of German Idealism. However, as yet Reinhold’s concept of deduction has not been sufficiently explained. The goals of this paper are to analyze Reinhold’s notion of deduction in his Neue Darstellung der Hauptmomente der Elementarphilosophie, to reconstruct his deduction of a priori forms of representation and to discuss his deduction critically. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG In der bisherigen Hegel-Literatur wird Schlegel zumeist als Hegels Antipode behandelt. Im Gegensatz dazu richtet sich mein Interesse in der vorliegenden Arbeit darauf, zu zeigen, dass Hegels Darstellung der Komödie In der „Phänomenologie des Geistes“ unter dem Einfluss von Schlegels Texten über die Komödie entstanden sein könnte. Um dies belegen zu können, werden zunächst die literaturgeschichtliche Bedeutung von Schlegels Aufsatz über Aristophanes aus dem Jahr 1974 und der Ruf gezeigt, den er in der damaligen intellektuellen Öffentlichkeit erlangte. Daraufhin (...) soll dargelegt werden, inwieweit es strukturelle Überschneidungen zwischen Hegels und Schlegels Darstellungen der Komödie gibt. Im Zentrum der Argumentation steht aber, dass beide Autoren die Parabase als das zentrale Element der Darstellung verwenden. Im letzten Teil der Arbeit wird aber versucht zu zeigen, dass Hegel über Schlegel hinausgeht, sofern die Komödie in Hegels System das Potenzial darstellt, über die Art und Weise der Vorstellung hinaus zum absoluten Wissen zu gelangen. ABSTRACT In the previous Hegel literature, Schlegel is mostly treated as Hegel’s antipode. In contrast to this, my interest in the present work is directed towards showing that Hegel’s presentation of comedy in the „Phenomenology of the Spirit“ may have developed under the influence of Schlegel’s texts on comedy. In order to be able to prove this, the significance of Schlegel’s essay on Aristophanes from 1974 and the reputation he gained in the intellectual public of the time are shown first. It will then be shown to what extent there are structural overlaps between Hegel’s and Schlegel’s presentations of comedy. At the center of the argument, however, is the fact that both authors use the parabasis as the central element of the presentation. In the last part of the work, the attempt is made to show that Hegel goes beyond Schlegel, insofar as the comedy in Hegel’s system displays the potential to reach absolute knowledge beyond the way of representation. Um beide Perspektiven aufeinander zu beziehen, umreißt der Beitrag eine Topologie der Fahrzeuge anhand von Stadttexten aus der französischen Literatur der Gegenwart. Aus deren eingehender Darstellung bestimmter Verkehrsmittel geht hervor, dass literarische Texte nicht allein fahrzeugspezifische Weisen der Raumerfahrung entziffern, sondern darüber hinaus auch in Auseinandersetzung mit einer überkommenen Transportkultur originelle Praktiken des Fahrzeuggebrauchs ersinnen. ZusammenfassungDer Beitrag geht von der These aus, dass Goethes Arbeit an der ›klassischen‹ Dramenform sich einer tieferen Einsicht in die zeitliche wie rechtliche Problematik der ›tragédie classique‹ verdankt als allgemein angenommen. Dabei dürfte es maßgeblich die Französische Revolution gewesen sein, die eine neue Attraktivität der ›alten‹ Form bewirkte. Das zeigt sich vor allem an Die Natürliche Tochter, einem Stück, in dessen Entstehungszeit nicht zufällig Goethes Übersetzungen zweier Dramen Voltaires fallen. Figurationen politischer Gründung und Legitimation bildeten das Zentrum des ›klassischen‹ Dramas (...) bereits bei Corneille und stellten es zuverlässig auf eine um 1800 für konservative Autoren aktuelle Zerreißprobe. Die forciert gelassene Präsentation legitimer Herrschaft unter der Berufung auf Zeitkontinuität und lang währende ›Gewohnheiten‹ stand in der ›tragédie classique‹ nämlich in massiver Spannung zur normativen Forderung der ›Einheit‹ der Zeit, die das Drama auf eine disziplinierte Zeitökonomie und idealerweise sogar auf die Synchronisierung von dargestellter Zeit und Zeit der Darstellung verpflichtete. Dort, wo Corneille solche Spannungen entweder zu kaschieren oder politisch zu nutzen versuchte, reißt Goethe in Die Natürliche Tochter zwischen Figurenrede und Dramaturgie eine unüberwindbare Kluft und lässt ursprüngliche Funktionen der ›klassischen‹ Zeitökonomie konsequent leerlaufen. Sein Drama betreibt demnach keine restaurative Formpolitik, sondern führt die historische Uneinholbarkeit der ›klassischen‹ Form angesichts zeitgenössischer politischer Entwicklungen vor.The contribution is prompted by the observation that Goethe had deep insight into the temporal and legal problems of the ›tragédie classique,‹ which was fundamental to his work on the ›classical‹ drama. It was most likely the upheaval in the wake of the French Revolution that rendered the ›old‹ form more attractive. This is especially true for Die Natürliche Tochter. The play was, not coincidentally, written at the same time as Goethe’s translations of two of Voltaire’s dramas. Meanwhile, figurations of political foundation and legitimation had already advanced to the centre of ›classical‹ drama in Corneille’s work. The enforced serene presentation of legitimate rule of the ›tragédie classique,‹ with its reference to the continuity of time and age-old ›habits,‹ was in massive tension with the normative demand for the ›unity‹ of time, which committed the drama to a disciplined economy of time – ideally even to a synchronization of time represented and the time of representation. Where Corneille attempted to either conceal or politically exploit such tensions, Goethe in Die Natürliche Tochter forces an insurmountable chasm between dramaturgy and the speech of the characters and consistently allows the original functions of the ›classical‹ economy of time to run dry. Thus, his drama does not pursue a restorative politics of form, but rather demonstrates the historical unassailability of the ›classical‹ form in the face of contemporary political developments. Es ist keine bloße Metapher, wenn wir sagen, etwas stelle sich jemandem dar. Vielmehr kommt darin zum Ausdruck, dass sprachliche oder bildliche Darstellungen bestimmte Auffassungsweisen ihrer jeweiligen Gegenstände buchstäblich vor-stellen. Auf diese Weise vermitteln Darstellungen zwischen Geist und Welt bzw. zwischen Selbst und Anderen. Gleichgültig, ob wir selbst etwas erzählen oder etwas in der Zeitung lesen, ob wir ein Bild ins Netz stellen oder einen Film schauen, stets haben wir es mit Darstellungen zu tun, die Vorstellungen artikulieren und erzeugen. Der (...) Doppelsinn von Repräsentation als mentale Vorstellung und mediale Darstellung hat darin seinen guten Grund. Das Buch entfaltet eine Darstellungstheorie in therapeutisch-kritischer Absicht. Es zielt darauf, Darstellungspraxen als spezifisch menschlich, weil geistig und freiheitlich zu qualifizieren, um im Streit der Interpretationen bessere von schlechteren unterscheiden zu können. How it is that the mind is directed at the world? Far differently, the world exists in the minds of anyone, because it is mediated through perspectives and perceived only in aspects. No matter whether we tell a story, read something in the newspaper, or watch a movie, we always deal with representations that articulate and generate imaginations. This is the origin of the double meaning of representation as mental imagination and medial presentation. The book develops a theory of representation with a critical and therapeutic intention. It aims at qualifying representational practices as specifically human due to their mental and liberal character in order to be able to distinguish better from worse interpretations. (shrink)

RésuméLa démarche biologique est épaulée par des sciences supports comme la physique ct la chimie. Elles ont largement contribué a la rendre plus systématiquement quantitative. Récemment, des sciences annexes, derectement dérivées de ces sciences auxiliaires – comme la biophysique et la biochimie – ont largement contribuéàľacquisition de faits nouveaux et à la mise en place ?on;explications originales. Dans la connaissance de la matière vivante , la complémentarité de ces disciplines ?on;étude est évidente mais, de par les caractéristiques mêmes des méthodes (...) impliquées, des discordances dans les données expérimentales et dans les interprétations demeurent inévitables. Plus que jamais, les resultats obtenus doivent done être soumis à une discussion critique portant sur les limites qu'imposent tout à la fois àľexpérimentation, les techniques ?on;analyse et la nature même de ľobjet étudié. Et il n'est pas toujours possible de juger dans quelle mesure ces frontières méthodologiques ne sont pas, en fait, dépassées …la représentation trouvée du sujet étant peu conformc à sa réalité propre. En tentant de dominer toujours mieux sa technologie – respectant le plus possible ľaspect in vivo de ľanalyse – en nuançant davantage les théories suggérées, la biologie ?on;aujourd'hui est placee devant de nouvelles options technologiques decisives.SummaryBiological method is backed up by the support sciences such as physics and chemistry… These have largely contributed to render biology more systematically quantitative. More recently, related sciences derived directly from these support sciences, such as biophysics and biochemistry, have provided a stimulus to the acquisition of new facts and the working out of original explanations. In the domain of knowledge about living material the complementarity of these study disciplines is obvious, but in view of the nature of the methods involved, inconsistencies in the experimental data and their interpretation remain inevitable. Henceforth, results and hypotheses have to be considered in the view of the limitations both due to the techniques employed and the nature itself of the specific object of experimentation. And it is not always easy to be sure that these “methodological frontiers” have been respected… the representations suggested for the tested object being quite different from the reality. By overcoming these obstacles and in drawing out the theories suggest by experiments having more and more an “in vivo aspect”, biology is today at the forefront of new, decisive technological alternatives.ZusammenfassungDie Verfahren der Biologie werden durch Hilfswissenschaften wie die Physik und die Chemie gestützt, die weitgehend dazu beigetragen haben, diese systematischer quantifizierbar zu machen. Fur die Erkenntnis der lebendigen Materie ist die Komplementaritaut dieser Disziplinen offensichtlich, aber wegen der charakteristischen Zuuge der involvierten Methoden bleiben unvermeidbare Diskrepanzen zwi‐schen den experimentellen Daten und den Interpretationen zurück. Mehr denn je müssen deshalb die erhaltenen Ergebnisse einer kritischen Diskussion unterzogen werden, die die Grenzen betrifft, welche das Experimentieren, die Techniken der Analyse und die Natur der Gegenstände selbst uns setzen. Es ist nicht immer möglich zu beurteilen, in welchem Masse diese methodolo‐gischen Grenzen in der Tat nicht schon überschritten worden sind…, indem die vom Subjekt gefundene Darstellung nicht mit der Wirklichkeit als solcher übereinstimmt. Dadurch dass er versucht, seine Technologie immer besser zu beherrschen, den in vivo Aspekt seiner Analyse soweit wie möglich zu berücksichtigen und die naheliegenden Theorien immer mehr zu nuancieren, wird der zeitgenössische Biologe vor entscheidende technologische Optionen gestellt. This English translation gathers together essays from Le sujet de la philosophie: Typographies I and L'imitation des modernes: Typographies II, along with a major essay entitled "Typographie." These essays are an inquiry into the delimitation of mimesis from Plato to Heidegger as representation or imitation "with a character of veri-similitude " [[sic]]. Concealed within the Platonic determination of Being as eidos is the filiation between "the representation of Being as figure and Darstellung, presentation... or 'literary representation'". In uncovering the (...) derivation of Gestalt and Darstellung from Ge-stell, or installation, Lacoue-Labarthe exposes the "ontological power of poiesis.... Philosophy, then, will have always been a matter of erection", that is, of fiction in the sense of installation, which is to say of mimesis as poiesis. The threat of mimesis lies in its displacement or "disinstallation of poiesis," or the productive capacity of representation so that "it proves difficult, if not impossible, to refer the thing thus installed to its truth or Being, to its idea". In the six essays that make up the book, Lacoue-Labarthe turns to Plato, Diderot, Hölderlin, Nietzsche, Reik, Heidegger, and Rene Girard, and to such topics as tragedy, music, autobiography, and the problematics of individual and national self-identification. In demonstrating how mimesis has determined philosophical thought, Lacoue-Labarthe provokes us into reconsidering our understanding of history and politics. (shrink)
