Cet article présente un service de consultation conjugale situé en Suisse romande, non médicalisé, dont l’orientation psychodynamique et le travail auprès des couples n’est pas sans rappeler la pratique française des conseillers conjugaux-thérapeutes de couple « ancien modèle ». Si l’appellation de consultation conjugale a été retenue, malgré ses inconvénients, c’est qu’elle permet de toucher un très large public, en particulier de nombreuses personnes insuffisamment individuées pour qui l’appartenance au « Nous-couple » est constitutive. Par rapport aux objectifs de (...) travail, l’auteure explore deux voies, illustrées par deux vignettes cliniques : l’une vise à recouvrir une problématique sous-jacente en rétablissant un équilibre antérieur, l’autre à découvrir l’arrangement défensif du couple en introduisant une dynamique de changement. Les jeux vidéo sont aujourd’hui reconnus par de nombreux cliniciens et chercheurs comme des outils très pertinents dans la prise en charge des enfants et des adolescents. Le présent article a pour objectif de s’inscrire dans la continuité de ces travaux, en cherchant plus précisément à se focaliser sur l’intérêt du médium vidéoludique dans le cadre de la rencontre avec les jeunes souffrant d’un trouble autistique. Ainsi, à travers le récit du début d’une prise en charge psychothérapique individuelle d’un adolescent (...) présentant un autisme de haut niveau, il cherchera à expliquer en quoi le jeu vidéo semble bien être un outil de médiation thérapeutique accompagnant le sujet vers une augmentation de ses interactions avec le thérapeute, offrant au sujet autiste une possibilité de faciliter la mise en relation avec un autre, l’accompagnant vers une possible rencontre intersubjective. Le terme « incasable » est récurrent dans le champ de la protection de l’enfance. Il désigne ces jeunes en rupture sociale, scolaire, éducative et souvent en absence de soin face auxquels les professionnels se sentent régulièrement démunis. À travers un dispositif thérapeutique théâtre, cet article a pour objectif d’interroger la prise en charge de jeunes dits « incasables » et d’améliorer les pratiques cliniques et éducatives. L’atelier théâtre rassemble six jeunes placés en foyer. L’accent est mis ici sur le (...) suivi de l’un d’eux, un jeune dont la famille a demandé le placement. Les premières réflexions cliniques soulignent comment ce jeune participant à l’atelier thérapeutique théâtre parvient à s’ancrer dans le groupe et à y advenir comme sujet. La représentation des images parentales émerge au fur et à mesure qu’un récit se construit dans le jeu. (shrink)

Cet article présente le nouveau dispositif clinique de prise en charge multifamiliale mis en place dans un hôpital de jour pour des enfants présentant un trouble du spectre autistique sévère. Cette approche implique la mise en commun de plusieurs familles dans un contexte thérapeutique, avec le souci constant d’impliquer les parents dans la prise en charge des enfants. Le dispositif a accueilli les parents, les enfants ainsi que la fratrie de quatre familles lors de cinq séances espacées d’un mois environ. (...) Cet ouvrage se base sur un travail exégétique fouillé de l'idéalisme religieux postkantien. Son objectif est de parvenir à montrer l'utilité d'un tel exercice pour notre intelligence contemporaine des phénomènes religieux. La thèse défendue est que l'idéalisme postkantien est la première tentative systématique de théorie non dogmatique de la religion et que s'il parvient à ce tour de force après Kant, c'est parce qu'au lieu d'en rester à une approche minimaliste des contenus de croyance en rapport aux limites de la (...) raison, tant théorique que pratique, il déplace son angle d'approche vers le sujet croyant. Pour y arriver, il crée une matrice épistémologique qui lui permet de comprendre comment l'expérience du sujet croyant, la foi, agit sur sa perception de soi, des autres et du monde, au point d'introduire en lui une forme de variation affective, de trouble pulsionnel, qui engage des choix comportementaux. Si Fichte ouvre sur cette base une voie vers une thérapeutique du soi et une théorie critique de la religion, Schelling, pour sa part, est plus sensible à une économique holistique du développement de la vie dont un auteur comme Agamben permet de mieux saisir aujourd'hui tous les enjeux. Dans les deux cas, ce tournant épistémologique ouvre l'espace dans lequel les sciences humaines des religions pourront élaborer leurs discours au XXe siècle. Mais en reconsidérant l'origine de ce mouvement d'émancipation épistémologique à l'égard des croyances religieuses, force est aussi de reconnaître qu'un souci qui guidait les idéalistes en se concentrant sur le sujet croyant était de parvenir à maintenir le lien entre ces ordres de croyance et la capacité politique du vivre ensemble. C'est ce lien qui nous semble devoir être réactivé aujourd'hui dans nos tentatives de penser les phénomènes religieux sans établir de cassure entre une vision herméneutique et une vision politique. Le présent article a pour objectif d’analyser l’Argument de la continuité, qui est l’un des arguments les plus influents sur lequel repose la condamnation morale des pratiques scientifiques et médicales, telles que les recherches et les expérimentations sur les embryons, la reproduction assistée, l’avortement, le clonage thérapeutique, etc. D’abord sera donnée une brève explication de l’approche qui attribue le statut d’un événement marquant à la fertilisation, en identifiant l’Argument de la continuité parmi d’autres argumentations. En second lieu, je vais essayer (...) de distinguer les trois interprétations possibles de la notion de la continuité présumée dans l’Argument de la continuité, ainsi que d’isoler la formulation la plus persuasive de l’Argument de la continuité. Finalement, je soutiens que, même provenant de l’interprétation philosophique et scientifique la plus convaincante de la continuité de la période postérieure à la fertilisation, il ne s’ensuit pas 1) que la fertilisation soit une déterminante nécessaire du statut moral; 2) que la fertilisation soit la déterminante la plus raisonnable du statut moral. Bref, cet article a deux objectifs: celui de démontrer que justement cet argument n’implique pas que les pratiques mentionnées ci-dessus soient moralement inadmissibles et celui de suggérer que certaines stratégies pragmatiques qui traitent les paradoxes dus aux sorites puissent assurer un cadre philosophique et scientifique approprié à une approche alternative. Eoin Carney | : Continuing on from recent discussions on the overlap between Paul Ricoeur’s philosophy and care ethics, this article will aim to clarify the status of practice in Ricoeur’s work. I will argue that even though Ricoeur’s philosophy is indeed marked by its “desire for a foundation,” as care ethicist Joan Tronto has pointed out, this aim is more of a fragile wager than a principle, and is always at risk of being overturned by practices and other worldviews. I will demonstrate this point by arguing that Ricoeur’s hermeneutic approach to practice leads to the view that objective methods of knowledge and explanation are always grounded by the broader hermeneutic task of practical understanding and care for the self; in moral reasoning, Ricoeur’s analysis of the conflict between respect for the rule and respect for persons results in his prioritizing of respect for the singular other rather than the universal rule, meaning that the other can always disrupt and reorient universal or foundational modes of reasoning; and finally within healthcare relations Ricoeur aims to develop an alternative understanding of respect that places it in a dialectical relation with care. These practice-oriented readings of hermeneutics, morality, and respect aim to open up a dialogue between care ethics and philosophical approaches that have often been placed outside of care ethics. | : Poursuivant les récentes discussions concernant les recoupements entre la philosophie de Paul Ricoeur et les éthiques du care, cet article a pour objectif de clarifier le statut de la pratique dans l’oeuvre de Ricoeur. Je soutiendrai que même si la philosophie ricoeurienne est bien marquée par un « désir d’un fondement », ainsi que l’éthicienne du care Joan C. Tronto le souligne, cet objectif repose plus sur un pari que sur un véritable principe, et risque toujours d’être renversé par les pratiques ou d’autres visions du monde. Je démontrerai cela en soutenant trois arguments. 1) L’approche herméneutique de Ricoeur concernant la pratique mène à penser que les méthodes objectives de connaissance et d’explication sont toujours soutenues par une tâche herméneutique plus large de la compréhension pratique et du souci de soi. 2) En ce qui a trait au raisonnement moral, l’analyse de Ricoeur sur le conflit entre le respect de la règle et le respect de la personne accorde la priorité au respect de l’autre singulier plutôt que de la règle universelle. Ainsi, l’autre peut toujours perturber et réorienter l’universel ou les modes fondateurs du raisonnement. 3) Réfléchissant aux relations thérapeutiques, Ricoeur tend à suggérer une nouvelle compréhension du respect qui se place dans une relation dialectique avec le souci. Ces lectures – de l’herméneutique, de la moralité et du respect – orientées vers la pratique ouvrent la voie à un dialogue entre les éthiques du care et des approches philosophiques que l’on considère souvent éloignées de celles-ci. Le terme de médecine personnalisée peut désigner indifféremment la médecine de précision et la médecine des systèmes. L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser les rapports entre ces deux faces de la médecine personnalisée, au prisme de l’histoire du développement des thérapies ciblées. Les thérapies ciblées ont été développées dans le cadre de la médecine de précision, en s’appuyant sur le concept d’addiction oncogénique et sur l’idée qu’à chaque biomarqueur permettant d’identifier un sous-type de cancer correspondrait un médicament précis. Ce modèle (...) a permis des succès thérapeutiques remarquables, mais a également rencontré des limites, notamment avec l’apparition des résistances aux thérapies ciblées. Pour mieux comprendre les raisons de ces limites, il me semble qu’il faut justement se tourner plutôt vers la médecine des systèmes. Je soutiens en particulier que cette dernière repose sur des concepts de robustesse et de redondance fonctionnelle, qui nous permettent de comprendre en quoi l’apparition des phénomènes de résistance est une conséquence inéluctable et non transitoire du développement des thérapies ciblées. Il s’agit donc de montrer comment la médecine des systèmes permet de penser différemment les stratégies thérapeutiques dans la prise en charge du cancer et l’évolution future de la médecine de précision. This paper criticises Miranda Fricker's account of the primary harm of testimonial injustice as a kind of epistemic objectification, where the latter is understood on the model provided by Martha Nussbaum's influential analysis of sexual objectification and where it is taken to involve the denial of someone's epistemic agency. I examine the existing objections to Fricker's account of the primary harm, criticising some while accepting the force of others, and I argue that one of Fricker's own central examples of testimonial (...) injustice in fact offers the basis of a particularly telling objection. While Fricker's other critics have mostly concluded that we need to look at alternative theoretical resources to offer an account of the primary harm of testimonial injustice, I aim to show that this is premature; both Fricker and her critics have underestimated the resources provided by Nussbaum's analysis of objectification when offering an account of the primary harm, and something very much in the spirit of Fricker's account survives the objections. According to Martha Nussbaum, objectification is essentially a form of instrumentalization or use. I argue that this instrumentalization account fails to capture the distinctive harms and wrongs of sexual objectification, because it does not explain the relationship between instrumentalization and the processes of social stereotyping that make it possible. I develop an imposition account of sexual objectification that provides such an explanation and, therefore, should be preferred over the instrumentalization account. Objectification is a foundational concept in feminist theory, used to analyze such disparate social phenomena as sex work, representation of women's bodies, and sexual harassment. However, there has been an increasing trend among scholars of rejecting and re-evaluating the philosophical assumptions which underpin it. In this work, Cahill suggests an abandonment of the notion of objectification, on the basis of its dependence on a Kantian ideal of personhood. Such an ideal fails to recognize sufficiently the role the body plays in (...) personhood, and thus results in an implicit vilification of the body and sexuality. The problem with the phenomena associated with objectification is not that they render women objects, and therefore not-persons, but rather that they construct feminine subjectivity and sexuality as wholly derivative of masculine subjectivity and sexuality. Women, in other words, are not objectified as much as they are derivatized, turned into a mere reflection or projection of the other. Cahill argues for an ethics of materiality based upon a recognition of difference, thus working toward an ethics of sexuality that is decidedly ­and simultaneously ­incarnate and intersubjective. Objectification involves treating someone as a thing. The role of images in perpetuating objectification has been discussed by feminist philosophers. However, the precise effect that images have on an individual's visual system is seldom explored. Kathleen Stock’s work is an exception—she describes certain images of women as causing viewers to develop an objectifying ‘gestalt’ which is then projected onto real-life women. However, she doesn’t specify the level of visual processing at which objectification occurs. In this paper, I propose that images (...) can affect a viewer's early visual system. I will argue that if a viewer is exposed to a lot of images that depict women as sexual objects, this will bias their early visual selection mechanisms in a way that can result in an objectifying way of seeing. This is an important contribution to work on objectification as it incorporates empirical studies on vision and findings from philosophy of mind. It also examines some of the epistemic and moral consequences of objectification occurring at this early visual stage. (shrink)

Sexual objectification, in the broadest terms, involves treating people as things. Philosophers have offered different accounts of what, more precisely, this involves. According to the conjoint view of Catherine Mackinnon and Sally Haslanger, sexual objectification is necessarily morally objectionable. According to Martha Nussbaum, it is not: there can be benign instances of it, in the course of a healthy sexual relationship, for instance. This is taken to be a serious disagreement, both by Nussbaum and by recent commentators such as Lina (...) Papadaki. However it isn't a serious disagreement, for the two theories have different aims and methodology, and are not rivals. They both could be apt, simultaneously. (shrink)

Requests for support in professional changes are getting more and more numerous. Regarding jobs concerned with caring for others, therapeutic education needs to be spread into new approaches requiring social and human sciences (Tourette-Turgis, 2015 ; Chalmel, 2015). These requests lead to alterations in professional practices and changes in educational devices. This chapter deals with a direct observation of effective practices addressed to young patients and also implies the training of nurses through experiences. It also discusses ways of scientific collaboration (...) between female researchers in different scientific fields of the medical body leading the latter to alter their practices by creating pedagogic instruments or new tools for training. This inventive conception deriving from these exchanges leaning on experiences and skills previously built up and linked together to help devices development. Our contribution deals with and discusses the transformation of state nurses functions through these analyses and towards actions which do not only concern body care but a way of teaching healthy life style. The themes under study concerns the passing on and transferring experiences and responsibility when directing cessions from cardiology education to the therapeutic education nurse. (shrink)

The paper is about objectification in and of social work. Drawing on a decade-long cooperation with a Copenhagen social workers network focused in the organization Wild Learning, and starting from an Internet essay this organization has provided, the problems with objectifying social work are discussed. Viewed as basically a wholistic subjectification, social work cannot easily be endowed with objectivity in the form of scientific standards, and the objects representing it are often like novels, uniqueness mass-produced; they can be said to (...) ideologically confirm rather than scientifically model its activities and communities. The approach to objectification must dig a level deeper. It is considered how objectifications in social work – and the Internet essay is taken as example – can be approached critically as ideological objectifications and at the same time, in the cultural-historical tradition, as prototypes with some scope of relevance. Martha Nussbaum attempts to improve the clarity of the obscure talk of feminists and conservatives about objectification in connection with sexual matters. Her discussion is a substantial improvement. However, it is inconsistent and opaque, and she continues to apply the pejorative term ‘objectification’ to activities which she herself admits are morally unproblematic and which may even be a joyous part of life. I explain the deficiencies in Nussbaum’s discussion, including the fact that she does not notice the one way of (...) objectification that seems inherently problematic, and I show that casual sex, prostitution and pornography are normally not morally problematic even while they exhibit some of Nussbaum’s ways of objectification. The term ‘objectification’ should be eschewed because it is a barrier to clear thinking. (shrink)

I resolve a tension between two prominent strands of feminist social critique. On the first, the domination of women consists largely in their objectification, and the objectifying character of such domination primarily explains why it is wrong. On the second, some salient forms of domination have a distinctively intersubjective dimension that makes them crucially unlike our standard modes of relating to objects. Yet in that case, how could characterizing these acts as objectifying capture why they are wrong? Focusing on domination (...) that seeks recognition from the subordinate, I argue that each strand contains half the truth, weaving these together. The first is correct to point out that that the concept of objectification is necessary for capturing the wrong of recognition-seeking domination, and that acts can be objectifying and ‘subjectifying’ all at once. The second strand is right to insist that domination of this sort has an irreducibly subjectifying character in light of which the concept of objectification is insufficient for clarifying its wrongness. The general lesson is that an account of the wrong of recognition- seeking domination is adequate only if it does justice to both its objectifying and subjectifying aspects. (shrink)

Sexual objectification is a common theme in contemporary feminist theory. It has been associated with the work of the anti-pornography feminists Catharine MacKinnon and Andrea Dworkin, and, more recently, with the work of Martha Nussbaum. Interestingly, these feminists' views on objectification have their foundations in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. Fully comprehending contemporary discussions of sexuality and objectification, therefore, requires a close and careful analysis of Kant's own theory of objectification. In this paper, I provide such an analysis. I explain (...) what is involved, for Kant, in the process of objectification, what it really means for a person to be an object (what Kant calls an `object of appetite'), and finally deal with his reasons for thinking that marriage can provide the solution to the problem of sexual objectification. I then proceed to some contemporary feminist discussions on sexual objectification, showing how influential Kant's ideas have been for contemporary feminist thinkers MacKinnon, Dworkin, and Nussbaum. My analysis of these feminists' work focuses on the striking similarities, as well as the important differences, that exist between their views and Kant's views on what objectification is, how it is caused, and how it can be eliminated. It has been used rather vaguely to refer to a broad range of cases involving, in some way or another, the treatment of a person as an object. My purpose in this paper is to (...) offer a plausible understanding of objectification. I do that by focusing on the work of four prominent thinkers: Immanuel Kant, and contemporary feminists Catharine MacKinnon, Andrea Dworkin and Martha Nussbaum. Through drawing on these thinkers' conceptions of objectification, I am finally led to a more complete and coherent understanding of this notion. (shrink)

In this study we examine the relationship between the perception of being objectified in the workplace and the self-assessment of worth on a personal level, i.e. social desirability and social utility. This relationship is thought to be mediated by self-objectification in the workplace. 241 participants responded to an online questionnaire to measure these different variables. The results confirm a negative relationship between the perception of being objectified and the people’s worth, as well as mediation through self-objectification. La méthodologie exposée dans cet article a été élaborée voici plus de vingt ans pour et avec les enfants victimes de viols, l’ampleur des dégâts psychiques ayant été révélée par l’expertise judiciaire. La démarche théorique s’inspire de la phénoménologie des modes d’expression du sujet qui s’avèrent être à la fois révélateurs et moteurs thérapeutiques du trauma. La démarche pratique renvoie au constat de l’adéquation universelle du conte avec la mentalité infantile, tricotant un espace de fiction transitionnelle, facteur de résilience. (...) L’expérience de création de contes avec les enfants victimes d’agressions psychocorporelles a objectivé les indicateurs de destruction et corrélativement les indicateurs de reconstruction psychique de l’identité. Cette méthode propose dix ancrages thérapeutiques à partir de balises narratives dûment décryptées. La thérapie par le conte créatif est applicable à toute autre problématique traumatique, en collectif ou en individuel. (shrink)

성적 대상화 문제는 현대 페미니즘 철학의 핵심 쟁점 가운데 하나이다. 「Objectification」(1995)에서 누스바움은 기존 페미니즘 연구에서 대상화가 부정적인 것으로 간주되어 왔다는 사실을 비판하며, 상대에 대한 인격적 존중이 동반될 경우 긍정적인 대상화 또한 가능함을 주장한다. 그런데 문제는 누스바움이 설명하는 긍정적 대상화가 주체의 선의에 의존한다는 것이다. 주체의 선의에 따라 상대가 인격적으로 대우받을 수도 그렇지 않을 수도 있다는 점에서 누스바움이 제시하는 긍정적 대상화란 근본적으로 임의적인 지위를 가지며, 나와 타인의 관계에는 언제든 폭력이 침입할 여지가 남는다. 이 글은 대상화에 대한 누스바움의 논의가 ‘임의성’의 문제를 가진다는 사실을 (...) 보이고, 사르트르의 대타관계 모델을 바탕으로 대상화 문제를 성찰하는 새로운 방향을 제시할 것이다. 누스바움과 달리 사르트르에게 있어 타인이 대상이 아닌 주체로 거듭나는 것은 나의 임의적 선택에 맡겨질 수 있는 사안이 아니다. 오히려 타인의 시선은 나에 의해 대상화될 수 없는 나의 주체성의 한계를 형성한다. 사르트르의 철학을 경유함으로써 우리는 대상화에 관한 페미니즘 논의의 바탕에 타인, 그리고 주체에 관한 허위관념이 전제되어 있다는 사실을 밝히고, 대상화의 문제를 사유할 수 있는 새로운 관점을 발견할 수 있을 것이다. This chapter defends a theory of objectification, conceiving of it as a species of what aestheticians have called ‘seeing‐as’, and more specifically, a kind of seeing‐as which to some degree is insensitive to the mind or mental aspects. An advantage of this view is that it covers both sexual and racial objectification, and can also explain how photographic images can objectify their subjects: namely, by encouraging the viewer to view in a way insensitive to the mind or mental aspects of (...) the subject. The book proposes to study the place and function of medical theories and to systematically explore the relationship between medicine and the banquet. This convivial manifestation, as it is presented, has therapeutic and preventive virtues for the individual and the group with whom he associates. This study presents an unexplored side of Plutarchian thinking: he sees (...) the banquet as a therapy for the body and as a moderator of passions, and also as a regulator of human relationships. French text. French description: Ce livre se penche sur une oeuvre de la Seconde Sophistique qui ravive les discussions erudites tenues lors de banquets entre Plutarque et differents convives. Il propose d'y etudier la place et la fonction des theories medicales et d'explorer de facon systematique la relation, peu etudiee jusqu'a ce jour, qui unit les domaines de la medecine et du banquet. Cette manifestation conviviale, telle qu'elle est presentee et idealisee dans les Propos de Table, a des vertus therapeutiques et preventives pour l'individu et le groupe qui lui est associe. Mais les Propos de Table operent aussi un rapprochement entre la conduite au banquet, la pathologie du corps et les comportements sociaux et politiques, symptomatiques d'un inflechissement par Plutarque des banquets savants et des theories medicales vers ses partis pris ideologiques.Cette etude met en evidence un pan inexplore de la pensee de Plutarque: sa vision du banquet concu non seulement comme un remede pour le corps et comme un moderateur des passions, mais aussi comme un regulateur des relations humaines. Le banquet constituerait ainsi aux yeux de l'auteur un traitement preventif efficace a une epoque ou l'equilibre entre les membres de la communaute multiethnique, le respect et la coexistence pacifique s'imposent comme des valeurs indispensables. This thesis defends the diagnostic accuracy and political usefulness of the claim that women are complicit in their sexual objectification. Feminists have long struggled to demarcate the appropriate limits of feminist critiques of sexual objectification, particularly when it comes to objectifying practices which women both consent to and experience as empowering. These struggles, I argue, are the result of a fundamental misdiagnosis of what happens when women are sexually objectified, whereby the abstract notion of 'treating as an object' is called (...) upon to explicate the kind of phenomena which can only be properly understood in light of a more general set of social norms of masculinity and femininity. A more accurate diagnosis of sexual objectification, I argue, is provided by Catharine MacKinnon's radical feminist theory, according to which sexually objectifying acts are manifestations of the social process through which women are made into objects of male sexual gratification. One important implication of this account is that women themselves play a role in perpetuating the norms through which sexually objectifying treatment of women is enabled: insofar as they participate in the re-constitution of the social context which facilitates their sexual objectification, they are complicit in it. Although this idea lacks intuitive appeal from a feminist perspective, I argue that understanding the nature of the contribution women make to perpetuating their objectification enables a better understanding of what practices of resistance are necessary for effectively combatting the sexual objectification of women. I defend the explanatory power of the complicity account of objectification in light of two pressing debates in contemporary feminist philosophy: the question of how women can disidentify from femininity given the strong attachments they develop to it, and the question of how feminism can continue to appeal to the motif of solidarity considering the anti-essentialist commitments of recent feminist theory. Sara Heinämaa and James Jardine demonstrate that both classical and existential phenomenology offer analytical concepts that are of crucial pertinence and value to contemporary dehumanization research. They begin by outlining an account of dehumanization that distinguishes this phenomenon both from the general operation of objectification and from the violation of autonomy. What is essential to dehumanizing acts and practices they argue, is not objectification or the violation of autonomy per se, but rather a disregard for, and undermining of, the unique (...) singularity of human persons. Moreover, it is proposed that dehumanization ought to be theorized as an intersubjective process that also incorporates how the dehumanizing activity is experienced by the person dehumanized. Two concrete cases of dehumanizing treatment are then discussed in detail: colonial racism and gender hierarchization. The analytical concepts of inferiorization, epidermalization, and emotive projection are introduced to account for some of the specific features of these varieties of dehumanization. The chapter thus argues that dehumanization is not one unified phenomenon but a pattern of social dynamics that emerges in different guises relative to specific practical and historical contexts. Rae Langton here draws together her ground-breaking and contentious work on pornography and objectification. She shows how women come to be objectified -- made subordinate and treated as things -- and she argues for the controversial feminist conclusions that pornography subordinates and silences women, and women have rights against pornography.

This article centres around objectification. It offers an analysis of the notions that are involved in this phenomenon, their moral wrongness, as well as the connections that exist between them. Martha Nussbaum has suggested that seven notions are involved in objectification: instrumentality, denial of autonomy, inertness, fungibility, violability, ownership, and denial of subjectivity. She espouses the view that the instrumentalisation of human beings is especially problematic as compared to the other ways in which we can treat human beings as objects (...) . In this paper, I argue against the view that instrumentalisation should be thought of as more suspicious from a moral point of view than the rest of the ways in which people can be treated as objects. Singling out extreme instrumentality for being especially problematic might lead us to underestimate the wrongness involved in the other ways of treating human beings as objects, and can therefore potentially distort our understanding of what, more generally, is wrong with objectifying human beings. In this article I offer an analysis of harms associated with sexual objectification. Objectification can be benign, but harm tends to occur in three circumstances: (i) when objectification is non-consensual, (ii) when a phenomenon that I term ‘context-creeping’ occurs, and (iii) when the objectification is also enacting or reinforcing some kind of oppression. I defend the view that objectification is not always harmful, and I explain the popular intuition to the contrary by demonstrating that these three harm-generating circumstances are especially (...) prevalent. The phenomenon of ‘context-creeping’ objectification is introduced to capture what is intuitively wrong with much objectification in media and advertising. This phenomenon describes when instances of sexual objectification (which may be, in themselves, benign) regularly occur outside sexual contexts, in a way that reinforces particular rape myths and thereby contributes to harms. This means that the ubiquity of discussion of pornography in the objectification literature is misleading, and a shift in focus to other media is warranted. I end with a warning, though: we should be very careful in how we respond to these problems, as attempts to mitigate any harms associated with objectifying media can badly misfire. (shrink)

Objectification is a real problem in medicine that can lead to bad medical practice or, in the worst case, dehumanization of the patient. Nevertheless, objectification also plays a major and necessary role in medicine: the patient’s body should be viewed as a biological organism in order to find diseases and be able to cure them. Listening to the patient’s illness story should not be replaced, but, indeed, developed by the physical examination of his body searching for the causes of his (...) complaints. Whereas phenomenologists have so far mainly been identifying the back sides of objectification in medicine, in this paper the aim is to analyze differences between detrimental objectifications and objectifications that do not deprive the patient of his subjectivity but, rather, at least in some cases, may lead the patient to feel more at home with his body. The weak objectification of physical properties is shown to yield the same probabilistic implications as strong objectification and can therefore be refuted on the basis of suitable interference experiments. An alternative test of hypothetical objectification statements, as they occur in the EPR experiment, is based on joint probabilities and the ensuing Bell inequalities. Quantum mechanics turns out to be partially compatible with Bell's inequalities even in cases where weak objectification is excluded by interference.

And this paper is an attempt to say precisely how, thus addressing a philosophical problem which is commonly taken to be a serious one. It does so, however, in quite an idiosyncratic way. It is based on the account of inductive schemes I have given in (1988) and (1990a) and on the conception of causation I have presented in (1980), (1983), and (1990b), and it intends to fill one of many gaps which have been left by these papers. Still, I (...) have tried to make this paper self-contained. Section 1 explains the philosophical question this paper is about; in more general terms it asks what might be meant by objectifying epistemic states or features of them and to which extent epistemic states can be objectified. The next sections introduce the basis I rely on with formal precision and some explanation; section 2 deals with induction and section 3 with causation. Within these confines, section 4 attempts to give an explication of the relevant sense of objectification and section 5 investigates the extent to which various features of epistemic states are objectifiable. The two most salient results are roughly that the relation "A is a reason for B" cannot be objectified at all and that the relation "A is a cause of B" can be objectified only under substantial, though reasonable restrictions. What has all of this to do with probability? A lot. The paper trades on a pervasive duality between probabilistic and deterministic epistemology, between a probabilistic representation of epistemic states together with a theory of probabilistic causation and another representation of epistemic states which I call deterministic because it lends itself, in a perfectly parallel fashion, to a theory of deterministic causation. Here I explicitly deal only with the deterministic side, but the duality should pave the way for further conclusions concerning objective probabilities and statistical laws. Purpose. Based on the anthropocentric approach to the analysis of visual self-presentations of Artemisia Gentileschi in paintings, to present the artwork as self-objectifications of the artist, which give rise to a new cultural reality and are at the same time a means of knowing the essence of man. Theoretical basis. The principles and methods of philosophical and anthropological research in combination with biographical, historical and comparative, iconographic, figurative and stylistic methods were used when writing the article. Among philosophical and anthropological (...) methods the principle of anthropological reduction was used, based on which the works by Artemisia Gentileschi were analyzed as her self-objectification, principle of extrapolation of a separate fact of the painter’s life and anthropological interpretation of art evolution, when an attempt is made to know their creator through a series of chronological consistent works as figurative objectification. The biographical method was used when working with data on the painter’s life, iconographic and figurative stylistic – when analyzing the art visuals: self-portraits, allegories and narrative paintings. The analytical work was carried out in stages as transition from an iconographic interpretation of paintings with gradual elimination of art and style characteristics as extra-anthropological cultural constants with subsequent anthropological reduction of cultural image. Originality consists in the author’s method of analyzing the works of visual art in terms of anthropocentric approach, as well as in considering the artwork by Artemisia Gentileschi as her self-objectification as such that give rise to a new cultural reality. Conclusions. The artworks by Artemisia Gentileschi in diachronic deployment can be seen as the painter’s self-objectification, which traces the evolution of self-expression from a person with traditional self-perception by social gender stereotypes to the phenomenon of personal life, which will determine further evolution of her self-identification and extirpation of sense of shame through virtual revenge, repentance, guilt, and formation of component of the painter’s identity as exemption from social gender prejudices and stereotypes on roles and standards of behavior socially assigned to women.
