A glimpse into the iconography of the Patroness of Aveiro: from 1470 (?) to 2008.

Which choices merit deference? A comparison of three behavioural proxies of subjective welfare.João V. Ferreira - 2023 - Economics and Philosophy 39 (1):124-151.
Recently several authors have proposed proxies of welfare that equate some (as opposed to all) choices with welfare. In this paper, I first distinguish between two prominent proxies: one based oncontext-independent choicesand the other based onreason-based choices. I then propose an original proxy based on choices that individuals state they would want themselves to repeat at the time of the welfare/policy evaluation (confirmed choices). I articulate three complementary arguments that, I claim, support confirmed choices as a more reliable proxy of (...)

Perceptions of intensive care unit nurses of therapeutic futility: A scoping review.João V. Vieira, Sérgio Deodato & Felismina Mendes - 2021 - Clinical Ethics 16 (1):17-24.
Introduction Intensive care units are contexts in which, due to the remarkable existence of particularly technological resources, interventions are promoted to extend the life of people who experience highly complex health situations. This ability can lead to a culture of death denial where the possibility of implementing futile care and treatment cannot be excluded. Objective To describe nurses’ perceptions of adult intensive care units regarding the therapeutic futility of interventions implemented to persons in critical health conditions. Method Review of the (...)

C. [REVIEW]Angela Longo - 2015 - International Journal of the Platonic Tradition 9 (1):54-87.
In his commentary on Plato’sCratylus, Proclus interprets the dialogue not as a mere work on logic or linguistics, but as having a full psychological and theological import.Late ancient Platonists had already proposed a similar reading for another Platonic dialogue,i.e.theParmenides. In that case too they rejected the logical interpretation, and aimed to find in the text the description of the hierarchy of reality, particularly of the highest beings. As a result, theParmenideswas seen as the accomplished expression of Plato’s theology.Proclus too draws (...)

Professional caregivers who work with the trauma and suffering of others, such as doctors, nurses and psychologists, may face significant challenges along with the risk of adverse, long-term mental and physical health problems. Caregivers with responsibility for dependants outside their professional work reported more stress. This finding is of particular relevance in respect of caregivers in under-developed countries such as Zimbabwe, where many households have taken in additional children who have been orphaned, whose parents are ill, or whose parents have (...)

Products of modal logics, part 1.D. Gabbay & V. Shehtman - 1998 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 6 (1):73-146.
The paper studies many-dimensional modal logics corresponding to products of Kripke frames. It proves results on axiomatisability, the finite model property and decidability for product logics, by applying a rather elaborated modal logic technique: p-morphisms, the finite depth method, normal forms, filtrations. Applications to first order predicate logics are considered too. The introduction and the conclusion contain a discussion of many related results and open problems in the area.

This study investigates the performance of psychopathic individuals on tasks believed to be sensitive to dorsolateral prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) functioning. Psychopathic and non-psychopathic individuals, as defined by the Hare psychopathy checklist revised (PCL-R) [Hare, The Hare psychopathy checklist revised, Toronto, Ontario: Multi-Health Systems, 1991] completed a gambling task [Cognition 50 (1994) 7] and the intradimensional/extradimensional (ID/ED) shift task [Nature 380 (1996) 69]. On the gambling task, psychopathic participants showed a global tendency to choose disadvantageously. Specifically, they showed an (...)

We also analysed the influence of awareness and attitudes towards biobanks on willingness to participate in biobank studies and on preferred type of informed consent.MethodsWe developed (...)

Products of modal logics. Part 2: relativised quantifiers in classical logic.D. Gabbay & V. Shehtman - 2000 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 8 (2):165-210.
In the first part of this paper we introduced products of modal logics and proved basic results on their axiomatisability and the f.m.p. In this continuation paper we prove a stronger result - the product f.m.p. holds for products of modal logics in which some of the modalities are reflexive or serial. This theorem is applied in classical first-order logic, we identify a new Square Fragment of the classical logic, where the basic predicates are binary and all quantifiers are relativised, (...)

Orbital and Field Angular Momentum in the Nucleon.D. Singleton & V. Dzhunushaliev - 2000 - Foundations of Physics 30 (7):1093-1105.
The nucleon spin problem raises experimental and theoretical questions regarding the contribution of the orbital angular momentum of the quarks to the total spin of the nucleon. In this article we examine the commutation relationships of various operators that contribute to the total angular momentum of the nucleon. We find that the sum of the orbital plus gluon field angular momenta should satisfy the angular momentum commutators, at least up to the one-loop level. This, requirement on the sum of these (...)
