Au livre XXV du Peri physeos, épicure met en œuvre une critique de Démocrite, l’accusant de s’ignorer lui-même et de soutenir une doctrine qui entre en contradiction avec ses actes. Pour Épicure, l’existence même de l’éloge et du blâme signifie que l’homme doit être considéré comme assumant, au moins partiellement, la responsabilité de son caractère acquis, de ses pensées et de ses actes. Le livre XXV du Peri physeos, pourtant, loin de prendre ses distances vis-à-vis de l’éthique de Démocrite, doit (...) être considéré comme un retour aux sources démocritéennes par Épicure et ce, par-delà les successeurs de Démocrite. L’étude des fragments et témoignages concernant Démocrite suggère en effet qu’il soutenait à la fois la thèse d’une constitution de l’âme exclusivement atomistique et la possibilité d’une transformation de l’âme par l’homme. On peut en conclure que ce n’est pas tant la perspective démocritéenne que rejette Épicure que la radicalisation déterministe effectuée par les démocritéens de la deuxième ou troisième génération. L’enjeu est donc pour Épicure, en restant fidèle à la physique et à l’éthique démocritéennes originelles, d’apporter des éléments qui permettent de justifier leur compatibilité au sein d’un même système, ce que Démocrite avait sans doute omis de faire. C'est dans le livre II de la Physique que se determine ce qu'est la nature. Aristote y articule cette notion a la fois dans son emergence et dans le sillage de ce qu'il a etabli dans le livre I, c'est-a-dire dans l'eclairage de la these selon laquelle les principes du devenir sont, selon les cas, deux ou trois: la specificite, la matiere et la privation. Le rapport entre devenir et nature n'en demeure pas moins ambigu, meme s'il est vrai que (...) le devenir a plus d'extension. Cette ambiguite est due au fait que le terme nature deborde le domaine des choses inanimees et concerne aussi ce qui est anime. C'est pourquoi, dans la physique aristotelicienne, on doit inclure l'etude du vivant (la biologie) et meme l'ame (psychologie). (shrink)

Pour la première fois en 1649, Descartes consacre une attention méticuleuse à la description de " toute la nature de l'homme ". Les passions ne lui fournissent pas une simple occasion parmi d'autres d'en traiter. Elles l'obligent surtout (et son lecteur avec lui) à se placer du point de vue du composé psychosomatique lui-même, soit à décrire, dans toutes ses manifestations et implications (éthiques notamment), cette " troisième notion primitive " que ni la philosophie première seule, ni la physique seule, (...) ne permettaient de cerner. Dans plusieurs passages, Épicure mentionne des durées infraperceptibles saisies par la raison, ce qui conduit à envisager un atomisme du temps, c’est-à-dire l’existence de durées indivisibles ou quanta de temps. Cette hypothèse, nulle part explicite chez Épicure et Lucrèce, a été évoquée par quelques doxographes. L’objet de cet article est de l’étayer et de la préciser, en lisant les textes épicuriens sur le temps à la lumière des trois grandes objections antiatomistes de la Physique. Notre analyse conclut que l’atomisme du (...) temps permet de répondre aux objections d’Aristote, mais doit être limité au seul niveau des atomes, par opposition à celui des agrégats. Il permet alors en effet de justifier l’isotachie des atomes, de rendre concevable la communauté de structure de la grandeur, du mouvement et du temps, et de garantir le caractère fini de la vitesse atomique. Deux lignes argumentatives se superposent : une conception proprement atomiste du mouvement et une reprise des termes de la physique aristotélicienne destinée à mieux en réfuter les objections. Les atomistes de l'Antiquité doivent résoudre le problème suivant : comment expliquer la formation des mondes et des corps composés à partir de corps élémentaires - les atomes - qui n'ont en eux-mêmes aucune propriété cosmogonique? La solution d'Épicure, selon la Lettre à Hérodote, § 45, consiste à adopter une conception subtile de la causalité atomique : les atomes ne sont pas seulement des composants, ou des causes matérielles, mais aussi, par l'intermédiaire d'un processus de sélection spontanée, les véritables agents (...) de la production des mondes et des composés. L’émergence de l’exégèse moderne et contemporaine s’est faite par singularisation et autonomisation par rapport à la globalité d'un horizon théologique, ce qui n’alla pas sans sérieux conflits avec les théologiens. Un espace s’aménagea progressivement pour une lettre étudiée selon les règles de la critique, valorisant ainsi le grammairien ou le philologue aux dépens du théologien. Ainsi Richard Simon, en 1678, reconnaissait-il deux sens à la Bible : le littéral et le théologique, qu’il appelle encore spirituel ou mystique. Le critique laisse (...) aux théologiens et aux pasteurs d'âmes le soin d’enseigner le sens spirituel. Il admet que le sens littéral n’a pas toujours vocation à nourrir la foi des fidèles ; sa seule demande est qu’on veuille bien lui laisser le soin de le fixer selon les lois de la critique historique et philologique, et donc de l’enlever à l’emprise que la théologie a sur lui. Ainsi éclata le conflit avec le théologien.Modern and contemporary exegesis emerged by adopting increasingly singularity and autonomy in relation to the overall theological horizon, which did not come about without serious conflicts with theologians. Le mouvement général des sciences est de fournir les moyens théoriques d'une reconstruction des phénomènes, en élaborant des lois explicitant leurs régularités sous-jacentes. In this paper we claim that pragmatist philosophical practice is incompatible with scientistic philosophy. The kind of pragmatism used for making this case follows the spirit and method of philosophical pragmatists such as William James, John Dewey, Richard Rorty, and a related pragmatic tradition, Confucian Philosophy. Pragmatism starts from immediate experience, and refuses to cleave off the reality and salience of what is found in such experience in the process of thinking. Pragmatism also concerns itself with social problems, broadly conceived. (...) In contrast to this focus on immediate experience, the influence of science in much philosophizing involves a kind of scientism through which the relevance, value, and even reality of experience is brought into question. It also concerns itself with a narrowly defined set of so-called philosophical problems. In this regard, pragmatist philosophical practice is fundamentally opposed to scientistic philosophical practice. We will start by modelling the kind of philosophical practice that stems from pragmatism, and the role of immediate experience in it. Subsequently, we will introduce two modes of philosophizing that diminish if not negate the role of experience. One is bald naturalist philosophizing, and the other is a priori scientific philosophizing. In the last section, we will show how main commitments of both of these traditions are incompatible with a pragmatist philosophy that remains committed to the original impulse of pragmatism.
