Robots are versatile devices that are promising tools for supporting teaching and learning in the classroom or at home. In fact, robots can be engaging and motivating, especially for young children. This paper presents an experimental study with 81 kindergarten children on memorizations of two tales narrated by a humanoid robot. The variables of the study are the content of the tales (knowledge or emotional) and the different social behaviour of the narrators: static human, static robot, expressive human, and expressive (...) robot. Results suggest a positive effect of the expressive behaviour in robot storytelling, whose effectiveness is comparable to a human with the same behaviour and better when compared with a static inexpressive human. Higher efficacy is achieved by the robot in the tale with knowledge content, while the limited capability to express emotions made the robot less effective in the tale with emotional content. Recent research showed the potential benefits of robot-assisted therapy in treating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. These children often have some form of Intellectual Disability too, but this has mainly been neglected by previous robotics research. This article presents an empirical evaluation of robot-assisted imitation training, where the child imitated the robot, integrated into the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children program. The sample included six hospitalized children with different levels of ID, from mild to profound. (...) We applied mixed methods to assess their progress, during treatment and three months later. Results show increased Gross Motor Imitation skills in the children, except for those with profound ID and the therapists’ positive attitude towards the humanoid robot. Furthermore, the therapists suggest how a robot could be used to autonomously collect and analyze the information obtained in the rehabilitation training for a continuous evaluation of the participants. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe mental illness that affects 5 to 20% of the general population. Current antidepressant drugs exerts only a partial clinical efficacy because approximately 30% of depressed patients failed to respond to these drugs and antidepressants produce remission only in 30% of patients. This can be explained by the fact that the complex pathophysiology of depression has not been completely elucidated, and treatments have been mainly developed following the “monoaminergic hypothesis” of depression without considering the (...) key role of other factors involved in the pathogenesis of MDD, such as the role of chronic stress and neuroinflammation. Chronic stress acts as a risk factor for the development of MDD through the impairment of neurotrophins signaling such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and transforming-growth-factor-β1 (TGF-β1). Stress-induced depressive pathology contributes to altered BDNF level and function in MDD patients and, thereby, an impairment of neuroplasticity at the regional and circuit level. Recent studies demonstrate that aerobic exercise strongly increases BDNF production and it may contribute as a non-pharmacological strategy to improve the treatment of cognitive and affective symptoms in MDD. Here we will provide a general overview on the possible synergism between physical activity and antidepressants in MDD. Physical activity can synergize with antidepressant treatment by rescuing neurotrophin signaling in MDD patients, promoting neuronal health and recovery of function in MDD-related circuits, finally enhancing pharmacotherapeutic response. This synergism might be particularly relevant in elderly patients with late-life depression, a clinical subgroup with an increased risk to develop dementia. (shrink)

Social interaction, especially for older people living alone is a challenge currently facing human-robot interaction (HRI). There has been little research on user preference towards HRI interfaces. In this paper, we took both objective observations and participants’ opinions into account in studying older users with a robot partner. The developed dual-modal robot interface offered older users options of speech or touch screen to perform tasks. Fifteen people aged from 70 to 89 years old, participated. We analyzed the spontaneous actions of (...) the participants, including their attentional activities and conversational activities, the temporal characteristics of these social behaviours, as well as questionnaires. It has been revealed that social engagement with the robot demonstrated by older people was no different from what might be expected towards a human partner. This study is an early attempt to reveal the social connections between human beings and a personal robot in real life. (shrink)

Concebidos con una metodologia unitaria intentan, limitando al maximo el uso de esa jerga especializada que suele hacer de muralla entre el analista y el lector, proporcionar instrumentos operativos para todos aquellos que conciben el cine como territorio donde saber y placer no (...) solo no estan renidos sino que se refuerzan mutuamente. Los ejemplos han sido tomados, conscientemente, de obras al mismo tiempo muy conocidas y suficientemente representativas de determinadas maneras de hacer. Eisenstein cuando recordaba a sus discipulos que el no podia ensenarles nada, pero ellos si que podian aprender mucho. Equidistante del moderno analisis formalista y de la tradicion clasica que reivindicaba la primacia del contenido, el tipo de trabajo patente en estas paginas reivindica el lugar central del texto filmico y sus texturas singulares en los nuevos estudios cinematograficos. This essay places the debate between Jerome and Helvidius in the theological context of the Rome of Pope Damasus. It presents the different theological positions of Helvidius and Jerome, highlighting that the literary clash was in the first place centered on asceticism and only later on the question of the perpetual virginity of Mary. The controversy, before being dogmatic, was exegetical in nature and this could explain the absence of an official intervention by Pope Damasus. Referring mainly to the testimony (...) of Ambrosiaster, it is proved in this study that the thought of Helvidius differed from the tradition of the Church in Rome, and that even Jerome innovates with his exegetical solution to the issue of the «brethren of the Lord». Girolamo con la filosofia antica nel contesto romano di fine IV secolo: come Ambrosiaster, anche Girolamo considera la filosofia un esercizio di dialettica e utilizza l’opposizione fra filosofi e apostoli pescatori per teorizzare uno stile umile nell’esegesi. Tuttavia, non rinunzia all’eredità della cultura classica, proponendo un uso cauto e selettivo della filosofia, attraverso la metafora della “bella prigioniera”. La filosofia è recuperata come anticipazione della vita ascetica, concepita come “vera filosofia”, e dà il (...) suo apporto all’esegesi biblica a livello metodologico e contenutistico sulla base della tripartizione in etica, fisica e logica e di uno studio fondato sulle auctoritates. Vinícius de Moraes, no Soneto de Fidelidade, elabora a fidedigna atuação do eu-lírico sobre a dedicação ao amor. A propulsão da fidelidade está na forma de anular-se para o outro, distanciando-se do raciocínio ao pensá-lo, pois pensar no que ama deslumbra o encanto para além da visão. Argumenta-se sobre as angústias, os relacionamentos e o amor que influenciavam nas tomadas de decisões e na aceitação dos fatos e das desilusões. Inserido na ótica histórica da Segunda Grande Guerra, sob a condição (...) de reler sobre o uso do amor enquanto cura (ou loucura), identifica-se a vivência do poema com a fidelização eufórica, passional, irracional até o ponto de tornar-se banal. Recorre-se, então, à Banalidade, categoria sublinhada por Arendt como a ocorrência que interfere no raciocínio, na capacidade de pensar e na relação humana, por intermédio da ausência de reflexão e adesão irrestrita ao cumprimento da lei, mesmo em acordo com o usufruto do mal. Neste ensaio, encontra-se a aproximação da lírica ao contexto da guerra, o adorno do sentimento ao extremo do amor à pátria, a expressão de Eichmann, de cujo relato se extrai o magnetismo de governança do III Reich que conduziu a massificação de seus súditos a um ideário manipulador no conceito de fidelidade. This study intends to show that the usually given meaning of the teleological dualism τὸ οὗ/τὸ ᾧ of Aristotle’s De anima, understood as “an aim or goal” and “the beneficiary”, does not come from Aristotle, but from a controversial interpretation of the ancient commentators. It originates on the attempt of certain Peripatetics to appropriate the Stoic distinction between “happiness” and “the happy subject” designated as the σκοπός and the τέλος of moral action. After this historical accuracy, we will propose a (...) different reading of the Aristotelian distinction according to the context of De anima as designating the tendency in the individual towards its preservation and use. En el presente estudio se busca superar la sensación que existe entre los autores de que la “cotidianidad” es un concepto vago, problemático, polisémico y que, por lo mismo, es inasible o incluso imperceptible. Esta tarea se vuelve aún más apremiante actualmente, al constatar la importancia central que ha ido tomando la categoría de cotidianidad en los estudios contemporáneos. Es así como hemos abordado este trabajo a partir de diferentes problemas: primero, desde la pregunta por la universalidad del concepto; segundo, (...) desde su carácter narrativo, desde su heterogeneidad y necesaria homogeneidad ; en tercer lugar, desde las posibles motivaciones; en cuarto lugar, desde su interrupción o quiebre; luego, desde su diferencia y cercanía con el concepto de “rutina” y, finalmente, desde sus consecuencias: desencantamiento y aburrimiento. This study aims to overcome some authors’ feeling that “everyday life” is a vague, problematic and polysemous concept which, for those reasons, is unreachable and even imperceptible. This task is more relevant at present, considering the central importance that “everyday life” category has gained in contemporary studies. We have approached this task starting from the analysis of different problems: first, the question of the universality of this concept; second, its narrative nature, its heterogeneity and necessary homogeneity ; third, the possible motivations; fourth, its interruption or break down; then, its difference and proximity to the concept of “routine” and; finally, its consequences: dis-enchantment and boredom. A conflict of interest is a situation in which a person has competing loyalties or interests that make it difficult to fulfil his or her duties impartially. Conflict of interest is not categorically improper in itself but requires proper management. A SCOPUS literature search was performed for publications on the efficacy/safety of Phospho-Di-Esterase Inhibitors for treating erectile dysfunction. A categorization tool was used to review and classify the publications as supportive/not-supportive for the discussed active ingredient and reporting or not reporting (...) a COI for that specific drug or for the remaining PDEIs. Multivariable binary logistic regression was performed. In the 419 selected records the prevalence of supportive opinions was higher when a COI for the index label was declared. The CoOpCaT showed good internal consistency, discriminative validity and intra/inter-rater agreement. The strongest predictor for a supportive opinion was the total number of financial COIs for the index label. A mild protective effect of the total number of financial COIs for any competitor label was noted. Financial COIs have frequently been associated with bias, and the measures currently adopted to restrain it lack effectiveness. Some evidence for monitoring and/or compensating this bias is reported here, but the ultimate solution remains distant. (shrink)

El presente artículo ofrece una presentación sintética de su Teología de la liturgia, en la que se pueden percibir implicancias espirituales y pastorales. La introducción muestra el origen biográfico del amor que el teólogo alemán tiene por la celebración del misterio. El desarrollo sigue un recorrido trinitario en que se habla de la liturgia como obra de Cristo, don del Padre y culto en el Espíritu Santo. En este artículo se exploran las relaciones entre finito-infinito y los límites del lenguaje posible, del lenguaje finito, para hablar de su callado fundamento. En este sentido, el mismo vaciamiento del lenguaje, expresión de una imposibilidad a la cual empero no se hurta, la de hablar de Dios, conduce a ponderar la importancia que tiene la teología negativa en el sentido de permitir al mundo humano barruntar las dimensiones del misterio que lo funda. Se tocan, de esta manera, las concepciones (...) de Maimónides y de santo Tomás acerca de la vía negativa como mecanismo parcial que afronta eso que, precisamente, desborda las fronteras del entendimiento humano. No porque Dios, en sí mismo, no sea, por decirlo con Erígena, plus quam esse, hiperesencial, sino porque en la noche cognoscitiva del lenguaje a éste no le queda sino su propia abdicación en relación al telos que lo mueve. En la desproporción existente entre el lenguaje y aquello que lo anima, aquél, el lenguaje, celebrará su propio silencio y la lejanía abismal en relación a su fundamento. Maimonides and Thomas: The Triumph of NegationIn this article I explore the finite-infinite relations and the limits of the possible language, of the finite language, in order to speak of its silent foundation. In this regard, the very emptying of language, expression of an impossibility from which it nevertheless does not hide, that of speaking of God, leads to think over the importance that negative theology has, in the sense of allowing the human world to conjecture the dimensions of the mystery on which it is founded. Thus, the conceptions of Maimonides and Saint Thomas are found to be very akin as to their regarding the negative way as a partial mechanism to deal with that which, precisely, surpasses the bounds of human understanding. Not because God in himself is not, to say it with Erigena, plus quam esse, hyperessential, but because in the cognitive night of language the latter has no choice but its own abdication with respect to the telos that animates it. In the disproportion existing between language and that which animates it, the former, language, will celebrate its own silence and the abysmal distance in relation to its foundation. Ponto de partida do artigo é a consideração de que o problema da relação entre Filosofia e Espiritualidade, ainda que problemático, é filosoficamente pensável e pode ser historicamente reconstruído. Com efeito, o artigo mostra de que modo o problema foi objecto de uma sistematização paradoxal, ainda que coerente e exemplar, por parte de S. Boaventura, cuja reflexão, tematizando a espiritualidade minorítica, radica em S. Francisco de Assis, ainda que também através da mediação de Santo António de Lisboa. Segundo S. (...) Boaventura, Deus manifesta-se de forma natural no livro da natureza mediante o Verbo incriado, cognoscível mediante a razão natural na ciência natural, que é a Filosofia; e revela-se sobrenaturalmente no livro da Escritura mediante o Verbo incarnado, cognoscível mediante a razão iluminada pela fé na ciência sobrenatural, que é a Teologia; mas também se comunica pessoalmente e concretamente no coração dos crentes mediante o Verbo inspirado, ou seja, o Cristo feito presente pelo Espírito Santo na "vida espiritual", num processo ascético-místico, cujo primeiro estádio é, paradoxalmente, a própria Filosofia, aqui entendida como a busca da sabedoria através das virtudes cardeais. Por outro lado, o artigo mostra também como o próprio paradigma da reedificação interior através das virtudes parece estabelecer um vínculo entre S. Francisco de Assis e Santo António de Lisboa, bem como entre os dois e S. Boaventura, o qual, hipotiza o autor do artigo, não só leu alguma coisa dos Sermões de Santo António, como deles retirou elementos para as suas reflexões mais maduras. /// The starting point of this article is the consideration that the problem of the relation between Philosophy and Spirituality, even if problematic, can be philosophically thought and historically reconstructed. In effect, the article shows how this problem was object of a paradoxical systematization, coherent and exemplar, on the part of Saint Bonaventure, whose reflection, typical of the Franciscan spirituality, is rooted in Saint Francis of Assisi, even if also through the mediation of Saint Anthony of Lisbon. According to Saint Bonaventure, God reveals Godself naturally in the Book of nature by means of the uncreated Logos, knowable through natural reason in the natural science, which is Philosophy; and God reveals Godself supernaturally in the Book of Scripture by means of the incarnated Logos knowable by means of reason illuminated by faith in the supernatural science, which is Theology; but God also communicates Godself personally and concretely in the hearts of the believers by means of the inspired Logos, i.e., the Christ made present through the Holy Spirit in the "spiritual life", in an ascetic-mystical process, whose first stage is, paradoxically, Philosophy itself, here understood as the search for Wisdom through the cardinal virtues. On the other hand, the article also shows how the paradigm of the interior edification through the virtues seems to establish a link between Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Anthony of Lisbon, as well as between the two and Saint Bonaventure, who, according to the article, not only has read something of Saint Anthony's Sermons, but also has taken something from them for his mature reflexions. El estudio plantea una recuperación de la categoría de ley natural, desde los aportes de la teología feminista. La problemática de la ley natural que estructura y fundamenta la ética teológica del magisterio católico, se fue entretejiendo en el tiempo y su gran sistematizador fue Santo Tomas De Aquino. La teología feminista, surgida de las teorías feministas sustenta como principio crítico la promoción de la plena humanidad de las mujeres y asume que los textos y las tradiciones de la (...) comunidad cristiana o las marcas de su recepción a lo largo de la historia, funcionan a partir de una concepción errónea de la mujer. Esto ha configurado para ellas un ethos a partir de una visión estática y esencialista de su naturaleza. La teología feminista es consciente de la necesidad de reflexionar a partir de una antropología igualitaria que incluya y haga partícipes a las mujeres del bien humano de la misma manera que a los varones, y a la vez permita visualizar las diferentes maneras en que varones y mujeres experimentan sus vidas. Esta reflexión encarnada sobre los bienes a los que estamos dirigidos y el descubrimiento de los medios necesarios para lograrlos integra la comprensión de la ley natural. (shrink)

Oggi il libro elettronico imita il libro a stampa come i primi incunaboli imitavano i manoscritti, l’esplosione delle modalità di comunicazione elettroniche è altrettanto rivoluzionaria di quello che fu l’invenzione della stampa a caratteri mobili centinaia di anni fa, e il lettore contemporaneo ha altrettante difficoltà ad assimilare gli e-book di quante ne ebbero i lettori del Quattrocento a familiarizzare con gli incunaboli. Siamo in un periodo nel quale testo a stampa e testo digitale coesistono e sicuramente continueranno a farlo (...) per qualche altro tempo ancora. Non pretendiamo dunque a tutti i costi di analizzare in termini dualistici ( o carta o digitale ) un fenomeno che è ancora in corso e basandoci invece su quello che ci insegna la storia del libro proviamo piuttosto a riconoscere che oggi stiamo assistendo a un cambiamento che almeno per un verso è effettivamente inedito perché, per la prima volta nella storia, avviene simultaneamente su più piani, con la trasformazione contemporanea del supporto della scrittura, della tecnica della sua riproduzione, delle modalità della sua diffusione e infine dei modi di leggere. Tutto il circuito della comunicazione editoriale classicamente intesa è messo in discussione e con il digitale il mercato librario è destinato a crescere, ma attraverso una grande mutazione delle sue logiche di funzionamento. Today, the e-book imitate the printed book exactly as the first incunabula once imitated the manuscripts; the explosion of the electronic communication is just as revolutionary as it was the invention of the movable type printing hundreds of years ago; and the contemporary reader is facing, with the e-book, the same difficulty than the readers of the fifteenth century have had with the incunabula. We are in a period in which paper and digital definitely coexist and they surely will continue to do it for a few more years to come. So, rather than insisting on analyze in dualistic terms (or paper or digital) a phenomenon that is still in progress, and relying instead on what we learn from the history of the book, we should try to recognize that today we are witnessing a change that at least in one way is actually different because, for the first time in history, it takes place at the same time on several levels, with the simultaneously transformation of the writing's media , the technique of its reproduction, the way of its spread , and finally the practice of reading . The classic communication circuit is being revisited, and the editorial market is meant to grow in the digital era, but throughout a big change in its behavior. (shrink)
