La loi de bioéthique adoptée en 2021 inaugure un nouveau droit : le droit d’accéder à leurs origines génétiques pour les personnes nées grâce à un donneur anonyme. Toutefois, certaines d’entre elles ont déjà fait des recherches en recourant aux tests adn, interdits en France mais facilement accessibles sur Internet. Ils racontent ici que la connaissance de l’identité du donneur s’étend à la découverte de demi-frères et sœurs. Ils témoignent que ce halo de personnes partageant la même expérience du don (...) noue, le plus souvent, une relation, amicale ou quasi familiale. Fait éclore une famille élargie qu’aucune norme n’impose. Ajoute une nouvelle touche, la famille choisie, à la palette composite de la famille contemporaine. (shrink)

L’émission Loft Story représente l’apogée de la néo-télévision. Elle a instauré un contrat de communication avec le public qui a mêlé la plupart des éléments caractéristiques de la télévision contemporaine. Participation du public au programme, symbolisée par la présence à l’écran de personnes anonymes issues de la société civile et par une interactivité poussée exprimée par les votes. Imbrication difficile à décrypter pour le téléspectateur entre réalité et fiction. Dimension ludique du programme et vécu en direct qui entretiennent le double (...) phénomène d’identification et de distanciation. Mise en scène de la dimension relationnelle de la vie privée. Écho de la culturelle adolescente, surtout dans son aspect interrelationnel. Utilisation du média comme acteur de la vie sociale, et notamment comme agent de promotion professionnelle.The show Loft Story represents the most extreme form of « neotelevision ». The communication contract it proposes to its audience brings together most of the elements that characterize modern television. 1) Public participation in the programme . 2) Unability for viewers to clearly sort out what pertains to reality and what belongs to fiction. 3) Playful dimension of a live broadcast that simultaneously triggers identificatory and distancing processes. 4) Focus on the private realm and on its relational dimension. 5) Particular attention paid to adolescent cultures, especially in their interrelational aspects. 6) Transformation of the medium into a social actor in its own right, specially as an agent of professional promotion. In the past forty years, Bruno Latour’s claim that Science Is Politics By Other Means (SIPBOM) has been the underlying creed of Science and Technology Studies (STS), most of us simply taking it for granted. In contrast, this special issue is predicated on the observation of an enduring lack of exegesis of this catchphrase so remarkable that is has caused an outcry among natural scientists, echoed in some social science quarters. Considérer saint Thomas d'Aquin comme un philosophe : la gageure est moindre que pour saint Augustin. Les images d'Epinal ne sont pas toujours mensongères et, s'il en est une qui dit la vérité, c'est bien celle de la distinction que Thomas tient entre foi et raison, théologie et philosophie. A condition toutefois de préciser que les deux disciplines ne sont par lui distinguées que pour unir, sinon leurs principes, leurs méthodes et leurs résultats, du moins la totalité du spectre de (...) la sagesse. Cette philosophie aux coudées franches s'avère de premier rang. Elle séduit par sa force spéculative et sa clarté, et trouve ces dernières années un public de plus en plus large. Ce volume est donc consacré à la philosophie de saint Thomas. Il couvre la plupart des domaines majeurs où Thomas impose sa marque, assumant les traditions qu'il fait siennes et aussi qu'il dépasse dans une synthèse originale : philosophie de la connaissance, métaphysique, Dieu, éthique, politique. Sans s'interdire des interactions avec les domaines de la théologie, de l'Ecriture et de la mystique, sans non plus négliger quelques-uns des recoins les plus inattendus de la pensée thomasienne, ni ses liens avec les autres doctrines médiévales, ni l'influence qu'elle exerce sur la littérature moderne. Un tel ensemble témoigne des derniers acquis universitaires, sur les questions qu'il traite, d'une nouvelle génération de chercheurs, ainsi que d'un souci pédagogique d'exposition. A «proto-história» do livro e a história da imprensa foram sobretudo assuntos dos bibliófi­los, dos bibliográficos e dos historiadores da literatura, ou seja, de especialistas ambicionando defender uma identidade, ou de distinguir, na massa da produção impressa ao longo dos sécu­los, o raro, o monumental, o anedótico, o literário... A partir de meados do século XX c com Apparition du Livre (1a Ed. 1958) de Lucien Febvre et Henri-Jean Martin, a história do livro, usufruindo dos desenvolvimentos da sociologia histórica e (...) de conceitos como o de «história das mentalidades», constituiu-se como disciplina pioneira. Com trabalhos como Histoire de l'édition française (1982-1986), Histoire des bibliothèques françaises (1988-1992), Diction­naire encyclopédique du livre (2002 -...) e outros projectos similares quer na Europa, quer além dela, o livro foi reposicionado, quer quanto à sua produção, quer quanto às práticas associadas, num vasto contexto económico, social, político e cultural. Ao mesmo tempo, as interrogações levantadas pela história do livro foram ao encontro da história da comunicação social e dos media, que hoje se tornaram dominantes. (shrink)

This paper shares my reflections on the research ethics review process, from the point of view of both a qualitative researcher and a member of an institutional research ethics review board. By considering research ethics review, first as practice, then as policy, as a relationship and, finally, as a performance, I attempt to outline a new vision of research ethics, one that engages seriously with the relationship between receiving ethics approval, and conducting ethical research.

Jean-Luc Nancy’s work revolves around the concept of existence, modified or rather explicated as co-existence. Nancy performs the same operation on existence as Heidegger did on being-in-the-world. Indeed, just as Heidegger could say that there is not at first a subject, then a world, then the question of how the former accesses the latter, Nancy asserts, (with regard to Mitsein, being-with, sociality in the purest and most eminent sense), that there is not at first a subject, a self, then another (...) self, then the question of how one accesses the other, and how they can communicate together. We have to start from “us”, and from the sense that “we” are, i.e. from a “coexistential analytic”. (shrink)

This article presents the critique of cybernetics as central to the history of one of the twentieth century’s most infamous avant-garde movements: the Situationist International (SI). Bringing together and analysing a series of seemingly marginal events in the build-up to May ’68, this article shows how the SI’s portrait of cybernetics as an emerging form of social power and control foreshadows later developments in French radical thought. This little-noted trajectory in the situationist movement also highlights the ways in which aesthetics, (...) theory, and politics are inextricably tied together in the events of May ’68. (shrink)

Cela nous a d'abord été donné à vivre, à chacun selon sa nature et la grâce de Dieu », notait Raïssa en 1934. Cette correspondance confirme le propos, qui nous fait pénétrer dans « l'amour fou » de deux vies données (...) l'une à l'autre, et la trame quotidienne de leur fécondité de pensée et de « grandes amitiés ».Leur conversion en 1906 scelle la vocation d'un couple venu déjà un peu d'ailleurs : lui, 18 ans, romantique, révolutionnaire et dreyfusard en diable, en rupture avec les élites républicaines laïques dont il est issu ; elle, 17 ans, comme sortie d'une peinture de Chagall, juive et slave en quête à la Sorbonne d'une nouvelle patrie spirituelle. Les premiers regards portés sur eux discernent déjà leur promesse : « Je les trouve absolument dignes l'un de l'autre ; ce sont même de si beaux types d'humanité qu'il faut se féliciter de les voir se rechercher. On ne trouve pas si souvent de couple bien assorti ; celui-là me paraît devoir donner un exemple lumineux. »Ils s'écrivent abondamment dès que les aléas de la vie les séparent et ce premier tome les suit dans la découverte d'eux-mêmes. Dans la discontinuité des circonstances, leur chemin métaphysique et mystique progresse, tandis que se révèle, derrière chaque ouvrage, chaque combat, chaque accompagnement spirituel, le secret de leur rayonnement : au fil de ces 712 lettres, c'est d'abord une histoire d'amour, dans un respect tendre et sacré de la singularité de l'autre. La nation – ou la patrie – est élevée par Durkheim au rang suprême dans la hiérarchie des formes d’attachement des individus aux groupes et à la société dans son ensemble, alors que, paradoxalement, les textes qui éclairent sa pensée sur ce point sont restés relativement dispersés dans son œuvre. Ce travail de relecture est accompli en confrontant ses écrits à ceux de son neveu, Marcel Mauss, qui, lui aussi, s’est penché sur ce sujet et dont les analyses apparaissent aujourd’hui (...) plus élaborées. Le lien entre les deux sociologues n’était pas seulement familial. Ils étaient l’un et l’autre des intellectuels républicains, patriotes, défenseurs des droits de l’homme et confiants dans les institutions de leur pays tant ils y voyaient l’inspiration des Lumières. Pour Durkheim, la nation se confond avec la société. La patrie est la forme de société la plus organisée et la plus haute qui puisse exister. Elle constitue une force en elle‐même dont l’Etat n’est que la représentation et l’instrument. L’Etat est en quelque sorte le cerveau social car sa fonction principale est de penser. La cohésion sociale est le produit de la morale et de la société, elle ne saurait dépendre d’un pouvoir autonome et autoritaire de l’Etat. Cette conception conduit Durkheim à rabattre le politique sur le plan du social. Quand il parle de la nation, il se réfère, sans le souligner formellement, à sa forme démocratique. Marcel Mauss rectifiera cette ambiguïté. Tout en s’inscrivant dans la continuité intellectuelle de son oncle, sensible à l’expérience du bolchévisme, il définira la nation en prenant en compte son régime politique, ce qui le conduira à une modification sensible de la définition de Durkheim. La conception de la nation des deux sociologues, mêle de manière presque inévitable engagement personnel et analyse objective. Elle a été, sans doute au moins partiellement pour cette raison, plus ou moins occultée pendant plusieurs décennies. Si nous la redécouvrons aujourd’hui, c’est parce qu’elle nous paraît susceptible d’interroger les fondements à la fois sociaux et politiques des sociétés démocratiques. (shrink)

Can we say that the mathematical signs refer, beyond the mathematical sense, to ideal objects which would correspond to this sense and realize it? Parallel to this, if Husserl affirms that the intuition of essences and sensitive intuition participate in the same generic concept of intuition as a giving act, can we however affirm that mathematical evidence is giving ideal objects such as sensitive perception gives individual objects?We show that the notions of object and evidence have a different status and (...) other modalities in mathematics than in other fields, and that the notion of categorical intuition must be replaced by that of categorical fulfilment, which designates the totality of theoretical procedures by which knowledge is validated. Against the temptation of the universalization of concepts, we advocate a regional phenomenology, practiced closely to the fields of thematized objects and their specific mode of access. (shrink)

This paper presents a paragraph of my thesis whose guiding thread is the theme of language in Heidegger, and which advances two basic claims: 1) Being and Time is an unfinished book and it is thus in the understanding of the planetary achievement of “nihilism” – i.e., of “technique” – that this work from 1927 assumes its whole meaning; and 2) that said, Heidegger’s work, taken as a whole, is a cohesive work that aims at overcoming “nihilism” understood originarily as (...) “forgetfulness of being”. This overcoming is therefore achieved in two stages: 1) the understanding of the phenomenon of “being” arising from the transcendental understanding of the “world”; and 2) the overcoming of that transcendental understanding of the “world” in the full understanding of the phenomenon of “being” as “history,” a process in which the dialogue with poetry will prove to be decisive. This paper emphasizes one aspect of that evolution of Heidegger’s thought “in dialogue with Heidegger,” showing how the understanding of “Ereignis” allows us to conciliate the understanding of the concept of “Entschlossenheit,” presented in Being and Time, with the concept of “Gelassenheit,” that is central in the second stage of Heidegger’s work. Assumptions about obesity—e.g., its connection to ill health, its causes, etc.—are still prevalent today, and they make up what I call the medical model of fatness. In this paper, I argue that the medical model was established on the basis of insufficient evidence and has nevertheless continued to be relied upon to justify methodological choices that further entrench the assumptions of the medical model. These choices are illegitimate in so far as they conflict with both the epistemic and social aims (...) of obesity research. I conclude the paper with a partial solution to these epistemic and social shortcomings. (shrink)

Le nom de Dominique Kahang'a Rukonkish a marqué plus d'un intellectuel à Kalonda, Kinshasa et au-delà, par l'arc-en-ciel thématique qu'il avait peint dans ses réflexions, spécialement autour de deux thèmes : la philosophie et la tradition sapientielle africaine. Ces thèmes sont au coeur des différents textes qui composent ce livre dont le point commun est que, comme peut-être aucune autre science, la philosophie vit de la réflexion des penseurs sur ce qui donne à penser et de la discussion avec (...) d'autres penseurs. C'est ici que se situe l'étude de sa propre tradition, comme l'a montré Dominique Kahang'a Rukonkish. Ceci est particulièrement nécessaire dans des situations de crise comme celle que traverse l'Afrique contemporaine. Ce qui importe dans ce cas est de questionner le passé à partir du contexte actuel en vue de ses potentialités à venir, tout en l'ouvrant à la possibilité d'une rencontre avec les autres traditions. Les auteurs des contributions réunies dans ce livre remercient Dominique Kahang'a Rukonkish pour ce qu'ils sont devenus grâce à lui. C'est pour eux un devoir de mémoire auquel ils se plient. Enhancing body awareness has been described as a key element or a mechanism of action for therapeutic approaches often categorized as mind-body approaches, such as yoga, TaiChi, Body-Oriented Psychotherapy, Body Awareness Therapy, mindfulness based therapies/meditation, Feldenkrais, Alexander Method, Breath Therapy and others with reported benefits for a variety of health conditions. To better understand the conceptualization of body awareness in mind-body therapies, leading practitioners and teaching faculty of these approaches were invited as well as their patients to participate in focus (...) groups. The qualitative analysis of these focus groups with representative practitioners of body awareness practices, and the perspectives of their patients, elucidated the common ground of their understanding of body awareness. For them body awareness is an inseparable aspect of embodied self awareness realized in action and interaction with the environment and world. It is the awareness of embodiment as an innate tendency of our organism for emergent self-organization and wholeness. The process that patients undergo in these therapies was seen as a progression towards greater unity between body and self, very similar to the conceptualization of embodiment as dialectic of body and self described by some philosophers as being experienced in distinct developmental levels. The analysis of identity in cases of memory loss, particularly in Alzheimer’s disease, sheds light on relevant philosophical and practical concerns, such as decision-making processes, autonomy, and the improvement of interaction with patients. Literature on psychological continuity recognizes identity when there are no disruptions in memory, which is certainly not the case in Alzheimer´s disease. Narrative identity, particularly in its relational and non-relational versions, delivers tools which are not exempt from difficulties. Either the caregivers’ narrative or the patient’s narrative is (...) dismissed. Furthermore, if there is a contradiction of narratives in relational theories, we are advised to either find the best narrative or seek agreement. However, one option rejects one narrative, while the other is unattainable in practice for the case in question. Hence, we propose drawing from ironism (Rorty, 1989), which suggests duality of dialogues when dealing with problems. This will be used to defend that the narratives of both, a person with Alzheimer and those close to them, are valid when constituting identity of the former. In this case, we will articulate and defend relational ironism, which allows us to embrace inconsistent narratives without seeking agreements. According to this, personal identity in this case is in constant tension between the narratives of those who suffer Alzheimer’s disease and the narratives of those close to them. During dialog, references are presented, accepted, and potentially reused. Two experiments were conducted to examine reuse in a naturalistic setting. In Experiment 1, where the participants interacted face to face, self-presented references and references accepted through verbatim repetition were reused more. Such biases persisted after the end of the interaction. In Experiment 2, where the participants interacted over the phone, reference reuse mainly depended on whether the participant could see the landmarks being referred to, although this bias seemed to be (...) only transient. Consistent with the memory-based approach to dialog, these results shed light on how differences in accessibility in memory affect the unfolding of the interaction. (shrink)
