Die Vorstellung, dass wir mehrere Menschen zugleich lieben können, wird in modernen, westlich geprägten Gesellschaften sowohl als fast trivialerweise wahr anerkannt, als auch als grundsätzlich verfehlt abgelehnt. Während beispielsweise kein Zweifel daran besteht, dass wir üblicherweise unsere Eltern und zeitgleich etwaige Geschwister sowie umgekehrt Eltern für gewöhnlich alle ihre Kinder lieben und wir zudem zumeist mehrere enge und tiefe Freundschaften pflegen, ist die gesellschaftlich vorherrschende Auffassung von romantischer Liebe weitgehend von der Idee geprägt, dass es sich ausschließlich um exklusive Zweierbeziehungen (...) handeln könne. Darüber hinaus haftet allen von der romantischen exklusiven Paarbeziehung abweichenden Formen, Liebe in Beziehungskonstellationen zu leben, eine diese moralisch mindestens als implizit fragwürdig, wenn nicht sogar offen als verwerflich kennzeichnende Be- beziehungsweise Verurteilung an. Tatsächlich gibt es allerdings viele Alternativen zur Monogamie. Der vermutlich berühmtesten, der Polyamorie, widmet sich der vorliegende Schwerpunkt. Das Wort „Polyamorie“ ist ein griechisch-lateinischer Hybrid (griech. polýs, viel/mehrere; lat. amor, Liebe) und die Bezeichnung für das zeitgleiche und konsensuelle Eingehen mehrerer Liebesbeziehungen. „Polycule“ ist das englische Kunstwort für eine ganze Reihe deutscher Ausdrücke für polyamore Beziehungsmodelle wie etwa auch „konsensuell- nichtmonogames Beziehungsnetzwerk“, „Sorgegemeinschaft“, „Wahlfamilie“ oder „Polykül“. Polyamore Beziehungsmodelle sind demnach breit gefächert und können letztlich alle möglichen Beziehungskonstellationen zwischen Personen umfassen, die einander auf die eine oder andere liebende Weise nahestehen. Dieser Schwerpunkt wirft vereinzelt Schlaglichter der philosophischen und ethischen Reflexion auf einige der Fragen und Herausforderungen, die sich hinsichtlich ethischer Polyamorie stellen beziehungsweise die mit dieser Form der nichtmonogamen Beziehungspraxis und -haltung einhergehen. Unsere Autor*innen eröffnen Diskussionsräume über einige grundlegende Aspekte einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Phänomen der Polyamorie. Damit stecken wir mit diesem Schwerpunkt das große Feld der philosophischen und ethischen Analyse rund um die Polyamorie lediglich grob ab – eine systematische und umfassende philosophische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Phänomen der Polyamorie muss an anderer Stelle erfolgen. Nichtsdestotrotz erleichtern wir mit diesem Schwerpunkt den Einstieg in die vielfältigen philosophischen und ethischen Fragen, die sich mit dem Phänomen der Polyamorie ergeben und bereiten den Grund für eine dezidierte und genaue Auseinandersetzung mit den Herausforderungen, vor die wir uns mit ihr gestellt sehen. Toleration is typically defined as follows: an agent (A), for some reason, objects to certain actions or practices of someone else (B), but has outweighing other reasons to accept these actions or practices nonetheless and, thus, refrains from interfering with or preventing B from acting accordingly, although A has the power to interfere. So understood, (mutual) toleration is taken to allow for peaceful coexistence and ideally even cooperation amongst people who disagree with each other on crucial questions on how to (...) live and what to value, which is why it has traditionally been regarded as an important part of political liberalism. An explicitly value-neutral liberal state then avoids taking sides when it comes to different and competing ways of life. However, following this idea of liberal neutrality, it has been questioned whether a value-neutral liberal state still needs toleration or is even compatible with it, for apparently neutrality leaves no more room for the objection component of toleration to take hold. In this paper, I take up this question and argue that there is, indeed, conceptual and practical room left for a value-neutral liberal state to be tolerant. Drawing on the interplay between four kinds of reasons (pragmatic, ethical, moral, and political), pragmatic and political reasons may still provide the needed evaluative and normative ground upon which the combination of objection and outweighing acceptance can be made sense of. However, the possible scope of toleration for a value-neutral liberal state is considerably limited. (shrink)

Drawing from conceptual clarifications and a distinction between different conceptions of toleration, I argue that an analogous discussion can be provided for the concept of modus vivendi and for a distinction between different conceptions of it. The resulting conceptions of modus vivendi, and especially a distinct ethical conception, allow for a more precise and more promising line of argument when it comes to using the notion (...) of modus vivendi in current debates in political philosophy. Erich Fromm hat 1956 in seinem zum Bestseller avancierten Buch „Die Kunst des Liebens“ zu Beginn drei Irrtümer unserer modernen Liebesauffassung moniert. Anstatt die eigene Fähigkeit zu lieben im Sinne einer charakterlichen Entwicklung möglichst gut auszubilden, gehe es den meisten erstens primär darum, geliebt zu werden und sich daher möglichst attraktiv darzustellen. Zweitens stehe die Suche nach einem passenden Liebesobjekt im Zentrum. Drittens schließlich würde Liebe mit Verliebtheit verwechselt. Die in Dating-Apps (implizit) vorausgesetzte Vorstellung romantischer Liebe scheint prima facie allen (...) drei Irrtümern anheimzufallen. In meinem Beitrag gehe ich daher erstens der Frage nach, welche Konzeption von Liebe dem Selbstverständnis und der Funktionalität von Dating-Apps (implizit) zugrunde liegt und inwiefern diese Konzeption den von Fromm konstatierten Irrtümern tatsächlich anheimfällt. Die unterstellte Vorstellung besteht darin, Liebe als eine unwillkürliche emotionale Reaktion auf eine möglichst gut „passende“ andere Person (das Liebesobjekt) zu sehen, weshalb es in Dating-Apps stets um Matchmaking geht. Diese Vorstellung fällt, wie ich argumentiere, tatsächlich allen drei von Fromm genannten Irrtümern anheim. Zweitens diskutiere ich vor dem Hintergrund dreier einflussreicher Theoriestränge romantischer Liebe (individualistische Theorien, interpersonale Theorien und Vereinigungstheorien), inwiefern es sich dabei tatsächlich um Irrtümer handelt, wie Fromm meint, d. h. inwiefern sich die Konzeption von Liebe, die Dating-Apps (implizit) zugrunde liegt, mit diesen einflussreichen Theoriesträngen romantischer Liebe vereinbaren lässt. In der Tat zeigt sich hier, wie ich argumentiere, eine weitgehende Inkompatibilität, so dass Dating-Apps Gefahr laufen, in theoretischer Hinsicht keinen Raum für diese einflussreichen Liebeskonzeptionen zu lassen. Abschließend diskutiere ich mögliche Antworten auf diese Kritik und argumentiere, dass ein Zugeben des dritten Irrtums diese Gefahr zwar auf theoretischer Ebene bannen kann, jedoch nur teilweise hinsichtlich der Alltagspraxis. Dass wir romantische Liebesbeziehungen im Alltag freiwillig beenden können, indem wir beispielsweise aus der gemeinsamen Wohnung ausziehen oder gar den Kontakt gänzlich abbrechen, scheint eine Trivialität zu sein. Können wir uns aber auch frei entscheiden, nicht mehr zu lieben? Während die alltagspraktische Ebene „nur“ die Handlungsfreiheit liebender Personen betrifft, führt die Frage nach dem Lieben auf eine zweite, tieferliegende Ebene. Diese betrifft die Frage, inwiefern liebende Personen als autonom mit Blick auf ihr eigenes Lieben angesehen werden können, d. h. ob (...) wir eine romantische Liebe autonom hervorbringen und auch wieder beenden können. In meinem Beitrag gehe ich dem Zusammenhang dieser beiden Ebenen nach und argumentiere, dass entgegen dem ersten Anschein eine echte Freiheit zu gehen auf alltagspraktischer Ebene alles andere als eine Trivialität ist. Hierfür bedarf es vielmehr einer ebenso echten Freiheit auf der Ebene des Liebens und damit letztlich einer existenzialistischen Konzeption autonomen Liebens. (shrink)

Die Kategorie des Sinns oder des Sinnvollen findet in der jüngeren Diskussion um die normative Theorie des guten Lebens erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit. Viele Autoren gehen mittlerweile davon aus, dass eine umfassende Bestimmung des guten Lebens nicht mehr ohne die Erwähnung und Erläuterung der Wertdimension des sinnvollen Lebens auskommt. Typischerweise wird dieses Syntagma so verstanden, dass damit ein Wertaspekt des Teil- oder Gesamtlebens eines Individuums gemeint ist, welches in einer bestimmten, von anderen Wertdimensionen des guten Lebens noch abzugrenzenden Hinsicht als lobenswert, bedeutsam (...) oder bewundernswert ausgezeichnet wird. Umstritten ist dabei jedoch zum einen, ob das sinnvolle Leben eine eigenständige Wertkategorie innerhalb des guten Lebens darstellt, und zum anderen, falls dem so wäre, wie diese Kategorie dann genau zu explizieren wäre, nicht zuletzt im Verhältnis zu den etablierten Wertkategorien innerhalb des guten Lebens, wie etwa dem Wohlergehen. Die in diesem Schwerpunkt versammelten Aufsätze unternehmen den Versuch, zum Verständnis der vielschichtigen und kontrovers diskutierten Dimension des Sinns beizutragen. (shrink)

Die Anerkennung der Existenz moralischer Dilemmata wird häufig als ernste Bedrohung moraltheoretischer Konsistenz angesehen. Im Beitrag wird zunächst mit Hilfe deontischer Logik nachgezeichnet, inwiefern moralische Dilemmata zu moraltheoretischer Inkonsistenz führen. Anschließend wird die Differenzierung zwischen tatsächlichen und prima facie-Pflichten erläutert und kritisiert, mit deren Hilfe die Inkonsistenz zu vermeiden und zugleich der in moralischen Dilemmata verbleibende moralische Rest in die Analyse zu integrieren versucht wird. Es wird dafür argumentiert, dass diese Differenzierung des Pflichtbegriffs nicht zu überzeugen vermag. Zu überdenken ist (...) insbesondere die Voraussetzung eines Pflichtbegriffs in Analogie zu modallogischer Notwendigkeit, der in Verbindung mit dem für die Auseinandersetzung zentralen Prinzip „Sollen impliziert Können“ zu dem dann unvermeidlichen Problem moraltheoretischer Inkonsistenz führt. Als Alternative wird abschließend vorgeschlagen, den Pflichtbegriff unter Rückgriff auf die umgekehrte Passensrichtung zu erläutern. Auf diese Weise, so die These, lassen sich sowohl die Gefahr moraltheoretischer Inkonsistenz bannen wie auch allen relevanten Aspekten moralischer Dilemmata angemessen Rechnung tragen. (shrink)

Die aktuelle philosophische Debatte darüber, was ein Leben zu einem sinnvollen Leben macht, wird gemeinhin vor dem Hintergrund einer werttheoretischen Auseinandersetzung innerhalb der übergreifenden Debatte um ein gutes Leben geführt. Ein sinnvolles Leben sei demnach grundsätzlich eines, in dem die Person bestimmten als wertvoll und daher sinnstiftend angesehenen Tätigkeiten nachgeht oder bestimmte zur Sinnstiftung geeignete Werte zu befördern sucht. In meinem Artikel widerspreche ich dieser werttheoretischen Engführung und gehe vielmehr von einer werttheoretisch neutralen Formulierung der Frage nach Sinn im Leben (...) aus: Wie müssen Elemente im Leben einer Person beschaffen sein, damit sie für diese Person eine sinnstiftende Funktion zu entfalten vermögen und die Person daher zu dem begründeten Urteil gelangen kann, dass ihr Leben sinnvoll in dem Sinne ist, als es Sinn im Leben umfasst, wobei dieses Urteil grundsätzlich auch aus der Perspektive Dritter zugänglich und nachvollziehbar bzw. kritisierbar ist? In Auseinandersetzung vor allem mit Susan Wolfs Hybridtheorie eines sinnvollen Lebens argumentiere ich, dass sich die sinnstiftende Funktion von Elementen im Leben in erster Linie durch die soziale Einbettung des eigenen Handelns oder Lebens konstituiert und einsichtig machen lässt: Sinn im Leben konstituiert sich dann, wenn das eigene Handeln oder Leben im Ganzen erstens in einen sozialen Zusammenhang eingebettet ist und man auf diese Weise mit und für andere handelt bzw. lebt sowie einem zweitens diese Einbettung auch wichtig ist. Derart explizierte sinnstiftende Elemente im Leben sind zudem offen für Kritik. Nicht alle sinnstiftenden Elemente sind gleichermaßen wertvoll oder sollten im eigenen Leben und Handeln eine Rolle spielen und verfolgt werden. Dies mag sich aufgrund prudentieller Erwägungen aus der umfassenden Perspektive eines guten und gelungenen Lebens im Ganzen ergeben oder aus einer moralischen Perspektive, wenn die spezifische soziale Einbettung oder die dabei verfolgten Ziele moralisch zu kritisieren sind. Sind meine Überlegungen überzeugend, so sollte man dem werttheoretischen Mainstream der Debatte um Sinn im Leben daher ein gutes Stück weit kritischer gegenüberstehen. (shrink)

This book engages in a critical discussion on how to respect and promote patients’ autonomy in difficult cases such as palliative care and end-of-life decisions. These cases pose specific epistemic, normative, and practical problems, and the book elucidates the connection between the practical implications of the theoretical debate on respecting autonomy, on the one hand, and specific questions and challenges that arise in medical practice, on the other hand. Given that the idea of personal autonomy includes the notion of authenticity (...) as one of its core components, the book explicitly includes discussions on underlying theories of the self. In doing so, it brings together original contributions and novel insights for “applied” scenarios based on interdisciplinary collaboration between German and Serbian scholars from philosophy, sociology, and law. Ist uns eine Person wichtig, möchten wir häufig zwei Haltungen zugleich an den Tag legen, die sich jedoch in einem Spannungsverhältnis zueinander befinden: einerseits eine tolerante Haltung und andererseits eine paternalistische. Zum einen sind wir üblicherweise der Überzeugung, dass andere und insbesondere uns Nahestehende ein Recht darauf haben, in ihren eigenen Angelegenheiten auch ihre eigenen Entscheidungen zu treffen. Dies gilt selbst dann, wenn uns diese Entscheidungen fragwürdig vorkommen. Wir haben diese dann zu tolerieren. Zum anderen neigen wir häufig erneut gerade (...) bei nahestehenden Personen zugleich zu einer paternalistischen Haltung, wenn wir glauben, dass die Person nicht die für sie beste Entscheidung trifft. Wir wollen eben doch das Beste für diejenigen, die uns etwas bedeuten, und wir halten es in manchen Fällen durchaus für angebracht oder gar geboten, auch gegen den aktuellen Willen der uns Nahestehenden zu ihrem eigenen Wohl einzugreifen oder sie von vornherein in die „richtige“ Richtung zu beeinflussen. In diesem Aufsatz diskutiere ich das konstatierte Spannungsverhältnis und weise zunächst die Auffassung zurück, dass schlicht die eine Haltung zugunsten der anderen aufzugeben ist. Anschließend diskutiere ich einen naheliegenden liberalen Vereinbarkeitsvorschlag, dem zufolge Toleranz im Wesentlichen Priorität genießt und Paternalismus nur in einer sehr eingeschränkten Variante möglich und akzeptabel ist. Demgegenüber argumentiere ich, dass der engere soziale Nahbereich nach einem umfassenderen Einbezug der paternalistischen Haltung und paternalistischer Eingriffsmöglichkeiten verlangt. Ich komme deshalb zu dem Schluss, dass, obwohl die praktische Frage, wie in der jeweiligen Situation zu handeln ist, stets eine der konkreten Abwägung bleibt, die beiden Haltungen sich jedoch letztlich als ein jeweils zu einseitiger Ausdruck einer einzigen, umfassenderen Haltung verstehen lassen, nämlich einer um das Wohl und das selbstbestimmte Gelingen des Lebens der nahestehenden Person besorgten und unterstützenden Haltung. This paper provides an introduction to the relevant debates revolving the three topics the connections between which are the being discussed in this volume--justice, autonomy, and love--outlining various conceptions and related questions. It also contains an overview of the contributions to the three sections of the volume: I) Justice Within Relationships of Love, II) Loving Partiality and Moral Impartiality, and III) The Political Dimension of Love and Justice.

Was genau ist eine Handlung? Wie unterscheidet sie sich von bloßem Verhalten und von Ereignissen? Und wie lassen sich Handlungsgründe analysieren? Und welche Rolle spielt der Handlungsbegriff etwa in der Metaethik, der Normativen Ethik und der Angewandten Ethik? Das Handbuch präsentiert die historischen sowie systematischen Grundlagen der Handlungstheorie und spannt einen weiten Bogen bis hin zu Fragen der Verantwortlichkeit, der Willensfreiheit oder der personalen Autonomie. Philosophers have long been interested in love and its general role in morality. This volume focuses on and explores the complex relation between love and justice as it appears within loving relationships, between lovers and their wider social context, and the broader political realm. Special attention is paid to the ensuing challenge of understanding and respecting the lovers’ personal autonomy in all three contexts. Accordingly, the essays in this volume are divided into three thematic sections. Section I aims at shedding (...) further light on conceptual and practical issues concerning the compatibility or incompatibility of love and justice within relationships of love. For example, are loving relations inherently unjust? Might love require justice? Or do love and justice belong to distinct moral domains? The essays in Section II consider the relation between the lovers on the one hand and their broader societal environment on the other. Specifically, how exactly are love and impartiality related? Are they compatible or not? Is it unjust to favor one’s beloved? Finally, Section III looks at the political dimensions of love and justice. How, for instance, do various accounts of love inform how we are to relate to our fellow citizens? If love is taken to play an important role in fostering or hindering the development of personal autonomy, what are the political implications that need to be addressed, and how? In addressing these questions, this book engenders a better understanding both of conceptual and practical issues regarding the relation between love, justice, and autonomy as well as their broader societal and political implications. This volume responds to the growing interest in finding explanations for why moral claims may lose their validity based on what they ask of their addressees. Two main ideas relate to that question: the moral demandingness objection and the principle "ought implies can." Though both of these ideas can be understood to provide an answer to the same question, they have usually been discussed separately in the philosophical literature. The aim of this collection is to provide a focused and comprehensive (...) discussion of these two ideas and the ways in which they relate to one another, and to take a closer look at the consequences for the limits of moral normativity in general. Chapters engage with contemporary discussions surrounding "ought implies can" as well as current debates on moral demandingness, and argue that applying the moral demandingness objection to the entire range of normative ethical theories also calls for an analysis of its presuppositions. The contributions to this volume are at the leading edge of ethical theory, and have implications for moral theorists, philosophers of action, and those working in metaethics, theoretical ethics and applied ethics. On its surface, the movie her depicts a classical romance: boy meets girl, both fall in love, the relationship evolves, until they finally and sadly break up. What makes this conventional plot special and worthwhile of being used in philosophical investigation is the fact that the girl in this case is an artificial intelligence —Samantha is an operating system owned by Theodore. But is reciprocal, romantic love between a human and an AI even possible, and, if so, might there be (...) aspects of such a loving relationship that warrant ethical criticism? Assuming, for the sake of argument, a positive answer to the first question, this chapter focuses on the latter. In addressing the ethical implications of such a loving relationship, we highlight the likelihood of its sexist and misogynistic traits. Current depictions of AI lovers—just like Samantha—usually fulfill the female stereotype of being warm, caring, and always up to satisfying the user’s needs. This is due to a fundamental asymmetry which is constitutive for relationships between humans and AIs—after all, the latter are programmed and bought for the very reason to satisfy the buyer’s needs. We argue that romantic love between a human and an AI, therefore, warrants substantial ethical criticism, as it falls short of important ethical aspects of a romantic love worthwhile pursuing. At the same time, the literature mainly deals with paternalism as a problem of the ‘public’ sphere, for example by focusing on the dangers (...) that threaten the autonomy of individuals as citizens, such as state paternalism. However, it is widely acknowledged nowadays that personal autonomy can only develop and flourish if conditions in the social and relational sphere are favourable, which means that personal autonomy is not so private after all. At the same time, it should be clear that paternalism not only relates to our behaviour in the public sphere, but also to how we behave in more private social spheres, like family, frien. (shrink)

We are material beings in a material world, but we are also beings who have experiences and feelings. How can these subjective states be just a matter of matter? To defend materialism, philosophical materialists have formulated what is sometimes called "the phenomenal-concept strategy," which holds that we possess a range of special concepts for classifying the subjective aspects of our experiences. In Consciousness Revisited, the philosopher Michael Tye, until now a proponent of the the phenomenal-concept strategy, argues that the (...) strategy is mistaken. A rejection of phenomenal concepts leaves the materialist with the task of finding some other strategy for defending materialism. Tye points to four major puzzles of consciousness that arise: How is it possible for Mary, in the famous thought experiment, to make a discovery when she leaves her black-and-white room? In what does the explanatory gap consist and how can it be bridged? How can the hard problem of consciousness be solved? How are zombies possible? Tye presents solutions to these puzzles -- solutions that relieve the pressure on the materialist created by the failure of the phenomenal-concept strategy. In doing so, he discusses and makes new proposals on a wide range of issues, including the nature of perceptual content, the conditions necessary for consciousness of a given object, the proper understanding of change blindness, the nature of phenomenal character and our awareness of it, whether we have privileged access to our own experiences, and, if we do, in what such access consists. The two dominant theories of consciousness argue it appeared in living beings either suddenly, or gradually. Both theories face problems. The solution is the realization that a foundational consciousness was always here, yet varying conscious states were not, and appeared gradually. Michael Tye explores this idea and the key questions it raises.

In _Reconstructing the Cognitive World_, Michael Wheeler argues that we should turn away from the generically Cartesian philosophical foundations of much contemporary cognitive science research and proposes instead a Heideggerian approach. Wheeler begins with an interpretation of Descartes. He defines Cartesian psychology as a conceptual framework of explanatory principles and shows how each of these principles is part of the deep assumptions of orthodox cognitive science. Wheeler then turns to Heidegger's radically non-Cartesian account of everyday cognition, which, he argues, (...) can be used to articulate the philosophical foundations of a genuinely non-Cartesian cognitive science. Finding that Heidegger's critique of Cartesian thinking falls short, even when supported by Hubert Dreyfus's influential critique of orthodox artificial intelligence, Wheeler suggests a new Heideggerian approach. He points to recent research in "embodied-embedded" cognitive science and proposes a Heideggerian framework to identify, amplify, and clarify the underlying philosophical foundations of this new work. He focuses much of his investigation on recent work in artificial intelligence-oriented robotics, discussing, among other topics, the nature and status of representational explanation, and whether cognition is computation rather than a noncomputational phenomenon best described in the language of dynamical systems theory. Wheeler's argument draws on analytic philosophy, continental philosophy, and empirical work to "reconstruct" the philosophical foundations of cognitive science in a time of a fundamental shift away from a generically Cartesian approach. One recurrent objection to the idea that the right kind of reasons for or against an attitude are object-given reasons for or against that attitude is that object-given reasons for or against belief and disbelief are incapable of explaining certain features of epistemic normativity. Prohibitive balancing, the behaviour of bare statistical evidence, information about future or easily available evidence, pragmatic and moral encroachment, as well as higher-order defeaters, are all said to be inexplicable in terms of those object-given reasons. In (...) this paper, I provide a rebuttal to all these challenges by drawing attention to the object-given reasons for and against the third doxastic state, namely the suspension of judgement. First, I introduce an original picture of how suspension relates to belief and disbelief – as ways of being decided – which yields a novel weighing model of the corresponding reasons. Second, I demonstrate that this new take on doxastic deliberation can accommodate all five features of epistemic normativity. Finally, I extend the weighing model to cover practical deliberation and the suspension of intentions. The resulting theory provides an explanation of why epistemic and practical normativity differ in certain respects in terms of a significant difference between doxastic and conative suspension. Suffering, in one form or another, is present in all of our lives. But why do we suffer? On one reading, this is a question about the causes of physical and emotional suffering. But on another, it is a question about whether suffering has a point or purpose or value. In this ground-breaking book, Michael Brady argues that suffering is vital for the development of virtue, and hence for us to live happy or flourishing lives. After presenting a distinctive (...) account of suffering, and a novel account of its core element, unpleasantness, Brady proceeds to focus on three claims that are central to his picture. The first is that forms of suffering, like pain and remorse, can themselves constitute virtuous responses. The second is that suffering is essential for four important classes of virtue - virtues of strength, such as fortitude and courage; virtues of vulnerability, such as adaptability and humility; moral virtues, such as compassion; and the practical and epistemic excellences that make up wisdom. In this provocative book, Michael Tye presents his unique account of the metaphysical foundations of psychological discourse. In place of token identity theory or eliminative materialism, he advocates a generalisation of the adverbial approach to sensory experience, the 'operator theory'. He applies this to the analysis of prepositional attitudes, arguing that mental statements cannot involve reference to mental events or objects and that therefore causal statements about the mental cannot be regarded as asserting relations between events. The structure of the brain and the nature of evolution suggest that, despite its uniqueness, language likely depends on brain systems that also subserve other functions. The declarative / procedural model claims that the mental lexicon of memorized word- specific knowledge depends on the largely temporal-lobe substrates of declarative memory, which underlies the storage and use of knowledge of facts and events. The mental grammar, which subserves the rule-governed combination of lexical items into complex representations, depends on a distinct neural (...) system. This system, which is composed of a network of specific frontal, basal - ganglia, parietal and cerebellar structures, underlies procedural memory, which supports the learning and execution of motor and cognitive skills, especially those involving sequences. The functions of the two brain systems, together with their anatomical, physiological and biochemical substrates, lead to specific claims and predictions regarding their roles in language. These predictions are compared with those of other neurocognitive models of language. Empirical evidence is presented from neuroimaging studies of normal language processing, and from developmental and adult- onset disorders. It is argued that this evidence supports the DP model. It is additionally proposed that “ language ” disorders, such as specific language impairment and non-fluent and fluent aphasia, may be profitably viewed as impairments primarily affecting one or the other brain system. Overall, the data suggest a new neurocognitive framework for the study of lexicon and grammar. (shrink)

Apophaticism -- the view that God is both indescribable and inconceivable -- is one of the great medieval traditions of philosophical thought about God, but it is largely overlooked by analytic philosophers of religion. This paper attempts to rehabilitate apophaticism as a serious philosophical option. We provide a clear formulation of the position, examine what could appropriately be said and thought about God if apophaticism is true, and consider ways to address the charge that apophaticism is self-defeating.
