Ensemble d'articles fondamentaux en relation avec l'épistémologie, l'ontologie et la philosophie du langage, qui laissent apparaître les enjeux philosophiques de l'oeuvre de W. V. A. Quine. Ces neuf essais témoignent de l'articulation du logique et du philosophique et mettent en évidence la créativité de la logique, définie en conclusion du dernier essai.

Quine est célèbre pour sa critique de la notion d’analyticité, mais il en a également proposé des substituts définissables en termes behavioristes. Cet article examine la question de savoir si de tels substituts peuvent ou non jouer un rôle épistémologique, en les comparant avec des tentatives récentes de réhabilitation de l’a priori. Il apparaît que la caractérisation de ce qu’est une définition acceptable en termes behavioristes est cruciale, et qu’un élargissement de la classe des comportements linguistiques pertinents peut ouvrir la (...) voie à une réhabilitation substantielle de l’analyticité.Quine is famous for his critics against the notion of analyticity used in epistemology and philosophy of science by philosophers of the Vienna circle. However, Quine has also proposed alternative definitions of the notion, which would be acceptable from a behaviorist perspective. In this paper, I address the question whether such alternative definitions can play any epistemologically significant role, by comparing them with recent attempts at a new defense of a priori knowledge. The upshot is that the answer cruccially depends on what is an acceptable definition in a behaviorist perspective. It might well be that an epistemologically significant notion of analyticity can be based upon a broad enough characterization of linguistic behavior. (shrink)

La vision par ordinateur est un des domaines de l’intelligence artificielle qui connaît les succès les plus fulgurants. Depuis une vingtaine d’années, les machines n’ont cessé de progresser dans leur capacité à extraire des informations à partir d’images et à identifier des objets. Mais faut-il en conclure que ces machines sont littéralement des machines voyantes, ou ne s’agit-il que d’une façon imagée de décrire des capacités de détection? Le présent article se propose de fournir les bases d’une réponse raisonnée à (...) cette question. Nous examinons successivement trois types de conditions d’attribution de la vision, et soutenons que le critère fonctionnaliste, en termes de représentations internes de stimuli visuels exploitables à diverses fins, doit être préféré aux critères behavioriste ou phénoménologique. Ce critère fonctionnaliste est ensuite appliqué à une des technologies les plus utilisées dans le domaine de la vision par ordinateur, celle des réseaux de neurones et plus particulièrement des réseaux convolutifs. Nous soutenons alors que de tels réseaux sont bien capables de voir, précisément dans la mesure où ils sont entraînés pour produire des représentations à partir de données visuelles. Ces représentations ont des traits spécifiques associés à un entraînement réussi : elles sont hiérarchiques, versatiles et robustes. De telles propriétés ont un intérêt théorique au-delà de leur domaine d’origine : nous suggérons pour finir qu’elles pourraient être utilisées pour spécifier la nature de la fonction de représentation et résoudre certains des problèmes classiques auxquels font face les théories téléosémantiques de la représentation comme celle de Dretske. Mais les jeux de Hintikka ne constituent pas la seule manière possible de fournir une sémantique pour l’indépendance : on pourrait au contraire vouloir le faire dans le cadre d’une sémantique récursive avec des quantificateurs de Henkin. Nous présentons ici quelques arguments techniques et philosophiques en (...) faveur de IF, en montrant pourquoi son concept d’indépendance, élargi aux connecteurs, peut prétendre être pleinement général, et en montrant en quel sens la logique IF traite l’indépendance de manière analytique. Ce dernier point est réalisé à travers une explicitation du contenu épistémique de IF, sous la forme d’une traduction partielle dans la logique modale. (shrink)

L’A. revient, dans le prolongement de son ouvrage L’anthropologie logique de Quine (qui plaçait l’accent sur la traduction, la logique et le principe de charité chez Quine) sur un élément souvent négligé de la thèse d’indétermination de la traduction, à savoir la reconstruction/identification des connecteurs logiques par l’assentiment et le dissentiment. Après avoir examiné diverses objections à l’utilisation par Quine des « fonctions de verdict » dans la traduction, l’A. en vient à la véritable motivation de Quine dans son recours (...) à l’assentiment, qui émerge dans l’ouvrage méconnu the roots of reference. Quine revient, par cet usage de l’assentiment, à la question de l’analyticité et à sa critique des « Deux dogmes », qu’il nuance, dans son oeuvre tardive, par la suggestion d’une analyticité non seulement naturalisée, mais socialisée. According to the standard semantic definition, the characterization of the relation of logical consequence depends itself on a characterization of the class of the so-called logical constants, those words, such as « not », « and », « all » or « some » which provide the logical structure of our arguments. In this paper, I shall make precise the conditions under which a conceptual analysis of the semantic properties of logical constants can complete, and shed light upon, a conceptual analysis of the distinctive properties of logical consequence. This article examines Harold Ramis’s 2005 noir comedy _The Ice Harvest_ as the critically dystopian counter-panel to his beloved 1993 film _Groundhog Day_, a film frequently discussed within the paradigm of utopia. While starkly different in genre, tone, and reception, the two films comprise a dialectical dyad that registers the historical transition from the utopian cultural effervescence of the early 1990s to the tragic foreclosure of imaginative horizons and the dystopian transformation of economic, political, and social landscapes in the new (...) millennium. In _The Ice Harvest_, the author argues, this is achieved through a strategic reactivation of film noir as a variant of the critical dystopia. (shrink)

The field of AI safety aims to prevent increasingly capable artificially intelligent systems from causing humans harm. Research on moral alignment is widely thought to offer a promising safety strategy: if we can equip AI systems with appropriate ethical rules, according to this line of thought, they'll be unlikely to disempower, destroy or otherwise seriously harm us. Deontological morality looks like a particularly attractive candidate for an alignment target, given its popularity, relative technical tractability and commitment to harm-avoidance principles. I (...) argue that the connection between moral alignment and safe behavior is more tenuous than many have hoped. In general, AI systems can possess either of these properties in the absence of the other, and we should favor safety when the two conflict. In particular, advanced AI systems governed by standard versions of deontology need not be especially safe. (shrink)

Machiavelli, Niccolò, 1469-1527-Criticism and interpretation ; Political science-Translating.

This volume includes Felix Noeggerath's dissertation from 1916, published here for the first time in a reliable critical edition. The dissertation represents a daring and far-reaching re-conceptualization of Kantian and neo-Kantian thought that consists in "critique of anti-rationalism," especially in the form of vitalism. Both Kant's and Hermann Cohen's philosophies can be experienced anew through the far-reaching optic that Noeggerath developed - an optic that he reiterates and develops into a comprehensive theory of art in a 1951 essay - republished (...) here, as well. The introduction by Hartwig Wiebebach provides an overview and incisive analysis of Noeggerath's philosophical program, while the afterword by Peter Fenves describes in detail the effect of Noeggerath's thought on Walter Benjamin's own attempts at a critique of anti-rationalism. Altogether, the volume provides a new point of access to the important legacy of neo-Kantian thought in the early twentieth century not only in terms of the systematic philosophy, but also in relation to the theory of art and the philosophy of modern science. This volume commemorates the centenary of Logical Investigations by subjecting the work to a comprehensive critical analysis. It contains new contributions by leading scholars addressing some of the most central analyses to be found in the book.

Screening programmes are becoming increasingly popular since prevention is considered 'better than cure'. While earlier diagnosis may result in more effective treatment for some, there will be consequent harm for others due to anxiety, stigma, side-effects etc. A screening test cannot guarantee the detection of all 'abnormal' cases, therefore there will be false reassurance for some. A proper consideration of the potential benefit and harm arising from screening may lead to the conclusion that the programme should not be offered. A (...) modified utilitarian approach may be used for allocation of scarce resources in health care. Ethics has an important role in this evaluation. (shrink)

I discuss a tension between two broadly Aristotelian ideas about the role of emotions in virtue and consider its implications for the original and attractive theory of virtuous judgment that Gopal Sreenivasan develops in Emotion and Virtue. One is the idea that a virtuous person has fitting emotions. The other idea is that the virtuous person has emotions that point her toward performing a virtuous action. I explain the tension between these ideas, and how it arises with respect to both (...) of Sreenivasan's central examples of virtue: compassion and courage.I suggest that this tension generates some interesting and systemic respects in which a virtuous agent's virtuous emotional responses hamper her attempts to judge what is the virtuous thing to do. This makes me less sanguine than I take Sreenivasan to be about the contributions of emotion to the virtuous agent's reliability in passing his “Central Test of Virtue.”. (shrink)

The concept of quantum principle is introduced as a principle whose formulation is based on specific quantum ideas and notions. We consider three such principles, viz, those of quantizability, local gauge symmetry, and supersymmetry, and their role in the development of the quantum field theory (QFT). Concerning the first of these, we analyze the formal aspects and physical contents of the renormalization procedure in QFT and its relation to ultraviolet divergences and the renorm group. The quantizability principle is formulated as (...) an existence condition of a self-consistent quantum version with a given mechanism of the field interaction. It is shown that the consecutive (from a historical point of view) use of these quantum principles puts still larger limitations on possible forms of field interactions. (shrink)

Tacitus writes that, by insisting that legionary legates who had not so far held the praetorship should immediately proceed to that office, Asinius Gallus ‘altius penetrare et arcana imperii temptari’. In C.Q. N.S. xvi , 327, I suggested that this demand of Gallus’ was probably probing dangerously deeply into and perhaps threatening to wreck the carefully worked-out imperial promotions system, the working of which has been examined by Birley. It is the purpose of this note to look at a number (...) of examples of such irregularity, which, though not as early as the debate during the course of which Gallus made his suggestion, do at least illustrate the process later in the Julio-Claudian era. In his historical writings, Cluvius Rufus evidently found cause to criticize Verginius Rufus for his conduct on a particular occasion ‘Scis, Vergini, quae historiae fides debeatur; proinde, si quid in historiis meis legis aliter ac velles, rogo igmoscas’. From his reply, it is clear that Verginius automatically understood Cluvius to be referring to an event to which he himself attached great significance: ‘Tune ignoras, Cluvi, ideo me fecisse, quod feci, ut esset liberum vobis scribere quae libuisset?’.
