Are Dialogues Antidotes to Violence? Two Recent Examples from Hinduism Studies.S. N. Balagangadhara & Sarah Claerhout - 2008 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 7 (19):118-143.
One of the convictions in religious studies and elsewhere is about the role dialogues play: by fulfilling the need for understanding, dialogues reduce violence. In this paper, we analyze two examples from Hinduism studies to show that precisely the opposite is true: dialogue about Hinduism has become the harbinger of violence. This is not because ‘outsiders’ have studied Hinduism or because the Hindu participants are religious ‘fundamentalists’ but because of the logical requirements of such a (...)

Contemplative Studies and Hinduism: Meditation, Devotion, Prayer, and Worship.Rita DasGupta Sherma & Purushottama Bilimoria - 2020 - Routledge India.
This book is one of the first wide-ranging academic surveys of the major types and categories of Hindu contemplative praxis. It explores diverse spiritual and religious practices within the Hindu traditions and Indic hermeneutical perspectives to understand the intricate culture of meditative communion and contemplation, devotion, spiritual formation, prayer, ritual, and worship. The volume extends and expands the conceptual reach of the fields of Contemplative Studies and Hindu Studies. The chapters in the volume cover themes in Hindu contemplative (...)

Perspectives of Hinduism and Zoroastrianism on abortion: a comparative study between two pro-life ancient sisters.Kiarash Aramesh - 2019 - Journal of Medical Ethics and History of Medicine 12.
Hinduism and Zoroastrianism have strong historical bonds and share similar value-systems. As an instance, both of these religions are pro-life. Abortion has been explicitly mentioned in Zoroastrian Holy Scriptures including Avesta, Shayast-Nashayast and Arda Viraf Nameh. According to Zoroastrian moral teachings, abortion is evil for two reasons: killing an innocent and intrinsically good person, and the contamination caused by the dead body. In Hinduism, the key concepts involving moral deliberations on abortion are Ahimsa, Karma and reincarnation. Accordingly, abortion (...)

  10. Unifying Hinduism: Philosophy and Identity in Indian Intellectual History.Andrew J. Nicholson - 2010 - Cambridge University Press.
Some postcolonial theorists argue that the idea of a single system of belief known as "Hinduism" is a creation of nineteenth-century British imperialists. Andrew J. Nicholson introduces another perspective: although a unified Hindu identity is not as ancient as some Hindus claim, it has its roots in innovations within South Asian philosophy from the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries. During this time, thinkers treated the philosophies of Vedanta, Samkhya, and Yoga, along with the worshippers of Visnu, Siva, and Sakti, as (...)

    Hinduism: A Contemporary Philosophical Investigation.Shyam Ranganathan - 2019 - London: Routledge.
Hinduism: A Contemporary Philosophical Investigation explores Hinduism and the distinction between the secular and religious on a global scale. According to Ranganathan, a careful philosophical study of Hinduism reveals it as the microcosm of philosophical disagreements with Indian resources, across a variety of topics, including: ethics, logic, the philosophy of thought, epistemology, moral standing, metaphysics, and politics. This analysis offers an original and fresh diagnosis of studying Hinduism, colonialism and a global rise of hyper-nationalism, as well (...)

Hinduism and Environmental Ethics: An Analysis and Defense of a Basic Assumption.Christopher G. Framarin - 2012 - Asian Philosophy 22 (1):75-91.
The literature on Hinduism and the environment is vast, and growing quickly. It has benefitted greatly from the work of scholars in a wide range of disciplines, such as religious studies, Asian studies, history, anthropology, political science, and so on. At the same time, much of this work fails to define key terms and make fundamental assumptions explicit. Consequently, it is at least initially difficult to engage with it philosophically. In the first section of this paper, I (...)

Overcoming the Distraction of Neo-Hinduism and Attending to the Real Challenges of Critical Vivekananda Studies.Anantanand Rambachan - 2022 - Philosophy East and West 72 (3):839-850.
I am grateful for this opportunity to respond to the essay "How 'Neo' is Swami Vivekananda's Vedanta: A Response to Rambachan," by Vinay Hejjaji.Allow me to begin with a comment about Vivekananda studies. Historical critical work on Swami Vivekananda is challenging and rare. In a colonial Indian context, Swami Vivekananda's journeys to the West aroused deep feelings of pride among Hindus, and these feelings have not abated with the passage of time. This is evident in the addresses presented to (...)

    Neo-Hinduism in Ukraine: Emergence and Current Situation.Nataliya V. Tamamyan - 2006 - Ukrainian Religious Studies 39:127-135.
Interest in the Eastern religions has arisen for a long time and has not subsided so far. A common picture of many Ukrainian cities is the people in orange clothing who chant the Hare Krishna mantra and actively promote religious literature. These are members of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, an Indian religious movement that has become more popular outside India than in India itself.

Jvanmukti or 'living liberation' has been identified as a distinguishing feature of Indian thought; or, upon drawing a narrower circle, of Hindu thought; and upon drawing an even narrower cocentric circle of Vedānta - of Advaita Vedānta. In some recent studies the cogency of its formulation within Advaita Vedānta has been questioned - but without reference to the testimony of its major modern exemplar, Rama a Mahar i (1879-1950). Digging Wells while houses burn? Writing histories of hinduism in a time of identity politics.David Gordon White - 2006 - History and Theory 45 (4):104–131.
Over the past fifty years, a number of approaches to the recovery of the multiple pasts of Hinduism have held the field. These include that of the discipline of History of Religions as it is constituted in North America as well as those of the Hindu nationalists, the col and post-colonial historians, and the Subaltern Studies School. None of these approaches have proven satisfactory because, for methodological or ideological reasons, none have adequately addressed human agency or historical change (...)

The importance of the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda can never be overestimated by contemporary Hindus; the numerous Ramakrishna centres around the world bear testimony to his abiding influence even 127 years after his address to the Parliament of World Religions in 1893. Vivekananda symbolises a Hinduism that has been able to assert its sovereignty not just over the intolerable and very parochial missionary attitudes of Christianity in the 19th century, but his notion of universal Hinduism took (...)

The Purusārthas: An Axiological Exploration of Hinduism.Arvind Sharma - 1999 - Journal of Religious Ethics 27 (2):223-256.
Three doctrines have often been identified in the context of Hindu civilization as its distinctive markers: the doctrine of the varṇas (or the doctrine of the four classes), the doctrine of āśramas (or the doctrine of the four stages of life), and the doctrine of the puruṣārthas (or the doctrine of the four goals of life). The study of the last of these has been comparatively neglected and the doctrine has even been dubbed a myth (Krishna 1996, 189-205). The purpose (...)
