  2. The Surd.Aden Evens - 2006 - In Simon B. Duffy (ed.), Virtual Mathematics: The Logic of Difference. Clinamen.
This article explores the question of what number is, demonstrating parallels between the Deleuzian notion of the differential as a dynamic moment of number and the intuitionist definition of number as a choice sequence. One conclusion offers a theory of mathematical progress, and suggests that this theory might be extended to domains outside of mathematics.

  5. Self-Reflection for the Opaque Mind: An Essay in Neo-Sellarsian Philosophy.T. Parent - 2017 - New York: Routledge.
_Self-Reflection for the Opaque Mind_ attempts to solve a grave problem about critical self-reflection. Psychological studies indicate not just that we are bad at detecting our own "ego-threatening" thoughts; they also suggest that we are ignorant of even our ordinary thoughts. However, self-reflection presupposes an ability to know one’s own thoughts. So if ignorance is the norm, why attempt self-reflection? While admitting the psychological data, this book argues that we are infallible in a limited range of self-discerning judgments—that (...)

  6. Inductive Risk, Understanding, and Opaque Machine Learning Models.Emily Sullivan - 2022 - Philosophy of Science 89 (5):1065-1074.
Under what conditions does machine learning (ML) model opacity inhibit the possibility of explaining and understanding phenomena? In this article, I argue that nonepistemic values give shape to the ML opacity problem even if we keep researcher interests fixed. Treating ML models as an instance of doing model-based science to explain and understand phenomena reveals that there is (i) an external opacity problem, where the presence of inductive risk imposes higher standards on externally validating models, and (ii) an internal (...)

    Musical Silences—Opaque and Capacious.Owen Hulatt - 2023 - British Journal of Aesthetics 63 (4):523-536.
I will argue that there are (at least) two species of musical silence, which cannot be distinguished by attending to how these silences sound. I term these two kinds of musical silence ‘capacious’ and ‘opaque’. Both capacious and opaque musical silences might occur in the midst of the ongoing production of sound or might exist in the complete absence of sound. Both kinds of silence can, in certain conditions, be sonically identical, but both are always received by the (...)

The paradoxical transparency of opaque machine learning.Felix Tun Han Lo - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-13.
This paper examines the paradoxical transparency involved in training machine-learning models. Existing literature typically critiques the opacity of machine-learning models such as neural networks or collaborative filtering, a type of critique that parallels the black-box critique in technology studies. Accordingly, people in power may leverage the models’ opacity to justify a biased result without subjecting the technical operations to public scrutiny, in what Dan McQuillan metaphorically depicts as an “algorithmic state of exception”. This paper attempts to differentiate the black-box abstraction (...)

  9. AI and the expert; a blueprint for the ethical use of opaque AI.Amber Ross - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-12.
The increasing demand for transparency in AI has recently come under scrutiny. The question is often posted in terms of “epistemic double standards”, and whether the standards for transparency in AI ought to be higher than, or equivalent to, our standards for ordinary human reasoners. I agree that the push for increased transparency in AI deserves closer examination, and that comparing these standards to our standards of transparency for other opaque systems is an appropriate starting point. I suggest that (...)

This dissertation investigates grounding, the relation of non-causal determination whereby one fact obtains in virtue of some other fact or facts. Although considerations of grounding have been central throughout Western philosophy, the last 15-20 years have seen a renaissance of systematic work on grounding in analytic philosophy. The aim of the dissertation is to contribute to our understanding of the nature of grounding and its relation to other central phenomena in metaphysics. -/- Chapter 1 of the dissertation provides a brief (...)

    Ex-Ante Pareto and the Opaque-Identity Puzzle.Johan E. Gustafsson & Kacper Kowalczyk - forthcoming - Journal of Philosophy.
Anna Mahtani describes a puzzle meant to show that the Ex-Ante Pareto Principle is incomplete as it stands and, since it cannot be completed in a satisfactory manner, decades of debate in welfare economics and ethics are undermined. In this paper, we provide a better solution to the puzzle which saves the Ex-Ante Pareto Principle from this challenge. We also explain how the plausibility of our solution is reinforced by its similarity to a standard solution to an analogous puzzle in (...)

    Math anxiety.Aden Evens - 2000 - Angelaki 5 (3):105 – 115.
This article presents an explication of the references to the history of the calculus in the first few pages of Chapter 4 of Deleuze's _Difference and Repetition_. In those pages, Deleuze uses anachronistic readings of the calculus to explain his theory of ontogenesis, beginning with the differential, dx, that is strictly nothing by itself but that establishes singular points in relation to other differentials. He builds from the differential to power series, showing a corresponding process of determination in the ontogenesis (...)

  13. Bourdieu and the logic of practice: Is all giving indian-giving or is "generalized materialism" not enough?T. M. S. Evens - 1999 - Sociological Theory 17 (1):3-31.
I argue here that in the end Bourdieu's theory of practice fails to overcome the problem on which it expressly centers, namely, subject-object dualism. The failure is registered in his avowed materialism, which, though significantly "generalized," remains what it says: a materialism. In order to substantiate my criticism, I examine for their ontological presuppositions three areas of his theoretical framework pertaining to the questions of (1) human agency (as seen through the conceptual glass of the habitus), (2) otherness, and (3) (...)

This article explores the ways in which predictive information technologies are used in the field of personalized medicine and the relations between this use and how patients and disease are perceived. This is examined in a qualitative case study of a personalized cancer clinical trial, where oncologists made clinical decisions for each patient based on drug matchings and efficacy predictions produced by bioinformatic technologies and algorithms. I focus on personalized practice itself, as a postgenomic phenomenon, rather than on epistemic, ethical (...)

  20. Object-oriented ontology, or programming's creative fold.Aden Evens - 2006 - Angelaki 11 (1):89 – 97.
This article asks what is creative about the act of programming. Observing that in most programming contexts, each line of code is written with a specific end in mind, it would seem as though there is little room for creativity, as the ends constrain the choices of means. However, there are many features of coding languages that open up creative possibilities. Object-oriented coding environments purport to make programming more about structures that humans might work with and less about features of (...)

Between Heschel and Buber: a comparative study.Alexander Even-Chen - 2012 - Boston: Academic Studies Press. Edited by Ephraim Meir.
Abraham Joshua Heschel and Martin Buber were giant thinkers of the twentieth century who made significant contributions to the understanding of religious consciousness and of Judaism. They wrote on various subjects, such as the Bible, the commandments, Hasidism, Zionism and Christianity, and had much in common, though they also differed on substantial points. Of special note is the intense and fruitful interaction that took place between them. Until now, scholars have not undertaken a comparative analysis of Buber and Heschel as (...)

New Contractualism in Social Policy and the Norwegian Fight against Poverty and Social Exclusion.Even Nilssen & Nanna Kildal - 2009 - Ethics and Social Welfare 3 (3):303-321.
This article explores some aspects of what has been termed ‘new contractualism’ in social policy, using the Norwegian policy on poverty and social exclusion as an empirical example. An important purpose is to identify how the move to new contractualism implies new modes of controlling behaviour and to explore the ethical legitimacy of this approach. Firstly, contractualism is seen in relation to some dominating discourses in Norwegian and European social policy over the last 20–30 years, emphasizing the importance of economic (...)

    Intercultural competition over resources via contests for symbolic capitals.Itamar Even-Zohar - 2020 - Semiotica 2020 (232):235-250.
Intergroup competition over resources is attested since the dawn of history. Written and archaeological evidence go back to at least the fourth millennium BC. According to accepted views, evolution has favored humans because of their ability to have cumulative cultures, which has made flexible adaptation possible. One major aspect of this adaptation has been the ability to handle power contests without engaging physical force. Instead, increasing prestige dynamics has allowed contest management by displaying symbolic assets. These have growingly been instrumental (...)

The norms of equality between the sexes versus traditional gender values in communist Mongolia.Marie-Dominique Even - 2015 - Clio 41:175-185.

This article explores the role of touch in the human-computer interface, suggesting that touch is strangely completed by vision and abandons its usual haptic quality. The interface relies heavily on touch, but that touch never touches what it reaches for, instead presenting a dynamic of pointing rather than touching. The paper goes on to consider how this unusual mode of touch alters the way this sense operates in the computing context, possibly shaping cognition in relation to the interface.
