Dans cet ouvrage, Franck Varenne pose la question du réalisme scientifique, essentiellement dans sa forme contemporaine, et ce jusqu’aux années 1980. Il s’est donné pour cela la contrainte de focaliser l’attention sur ce que devenaient sa formulation et les réponses diverses qu’on a pu lui apporter en réaction spécifique à l’évolution parallèle qu’ont subie les notions de théories et surtout de modèles dans les sciences, à la même époque. Même si, bien sûr, on ne peut pas attribuer le considérable (...) essor des modèles au XXe siècle au projet qu’auraient eu les scientifiques de régler cette question, en grande partie philosophique, du réalisme – car les modèles scientifiques ont bien d’autres fonctions et ils proviennent de bien d’autres demandes techniques, cognitives et sociales –, son choix épistémologique a consisté à suivre la littérature contemporaine désormais classique, tant scientifique que philosophique, sur les théories puis sur les modèles afin d’une part, d’en rapporter l’évolution générale, mais, d’autre part aussi, afin de l’interroger de proche en proche, et systématiquement, sur ce qu’elle entend à chaque fois réévaluer ou remettre en débat au moyen de cette question persistante du réalisme et de la réalité en science. Au-delà de l’enquête historique, cette étude se révèle donc également comparative. Elle présente l’intérêt de mettre en évidence des similitudes de forme remarquables (identités, symétries, inversions, déplacements) entre des séquences argumentatives produites par des auteurs différents, dans des contextes distincts, au sujet de cette capacité qu’aurait – ou non – la science à rendre véritablement compte de la réalité. -/- Ainsi, via l’analyse épistémologique historique et comparative qu’en propose Franck Varenne, la question cruciale de la médiation du réel par nos outils conceptuels ou expérientiels reçoit dans ce livre l’éclairage d’auteurs dont les conceptions sont, pour certaines encore, méconnues du lecteur non anglophone : Peter Achinstein, Max Black, Ludwig Boltzmann, Nancy Cartwright, Pierre Duhem, Ian Hacking, Mary Hesse, Evelyn Fox Keller, Imre Lakatos, Ernst Mach, Ernest Nagel, Henri Poincaré, Willard V.O. Complementary and alternative medicine has become an important section of healthcare. Its high level of acceptance among the general population represents a challenge to healthcare professionals of all disciplines and raises a host of ethical issues. This article is an attempt to explore some of the more obvious or practical ethical aspects of complementary and alternative medicine.

Die Formel „Ubiquität der Philosophie“ stammt nicht von mir. Sie ist ein Zitat. Ubiquität, ‚Allgegenwart‘, ‚Überalligkeit der Philosophie‘ – von lateinisch ubique: ‚überall‘, ‚wo immer‘ – ist eine bewußte Prägung von Richard Hönigswald. Wir finden sie bei ihm spätestens in seinem Buch Die Grundlagen der Denkpsychologie. Aber auch in seinem Spätwerk ist sie lebendig. Die beiden letzten Bände des 10-bändigen Nachlasses, die als Band IX und X 1976/77 erschienen sind und Texte aus den vierziger Jahren enthalten, operieren nachdrücklich mit dem (...) Ubiquitätstheorem. Sie tragen den von Hönigswald selbst formulierten Titel „Die Systematik der Philosophie. Aus individueller Problemgestaltung entwickelt“. Von „Allgegenwart oder Ubiquität des Geistes im menschlichen Dasein“ oder schlicht von der „Ubiquität des Menschen“ spricht übrigens auch 1938 der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftler Werner Sombart in seinem Buch Vom Menschen. Versuch einer geisteswissenschaft-lichen Anthropologie. Der Topos ist ihm wichtig genug, um ihn im Sachindex zu notieren. (shrink)

Théologien, historien, philosophe, sociologue et homme politique libéral, Ernst Troeltsch (1865-1923) fait partie du groupe des théologiens protestants allemands appelé " Ecole de l'histoire des religions ". Revendiquant l'héritage de Kant et de Schleiermacher, proche de Max Weber et du néo-kantisme de l'Ecole de Bade, Troeltsch est le théoricien classique du néo-protestantisme. Surtout connu en France comme sociologue de la religion, il est redécouvert aujourd'hui comme philosophe et théologien, éclipsé un temps par Barth, l'existentialisme et Heidegger. Les huit essais (...) rassemblés ici sont écrits à l'horizon d'une réflexion sur le religieux marquée par les sciences humaines et sociales et par une conscience accusée de la pluralité des formes de la religion. Troeltsch y dessine un programme qui inscrit délibérément la théologie dans une perspective historique, tout en s'efforçant d'articuler approche empirique et interrogation touchant les jugements de valeur. Il récuse ainsi toute tentative pour faire valoir un domaine théologique réservé : non seulement le christianisme n'est pas la religion dans sa forme achevée ou " absolue ", mais les tentatives pour déterminer une " essence " du christianisme par-delà ses inscriptions socioculturelles diverses devront également être refusées. En désenclavant la réflexion théologique, Troeltsch oblige à redéfinir son objet et son statut : elle ne sera plus explicitation du croire, mais devra esquisser une théorie du christianisme précisant le statut, la fonction et les limites du religieux dans une modernité marquée par la diversification des instances de rationalisation et de légitimité. Ce faisant, son propos tranche avec les discours théologiques dominants dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, tant en protestantisme qu'en catholicisme. Et il ouvre à nouveau la question d'une pertinence sociale et culturelle du religieux et du théologique. A l'heure où les paradigmes modernes se trouvent en profonde interrogation sur eux-mêmes et où la question religieuse fait retour - peut-être pour le meilleur mais souvent pour le pire -, la lecture de Troeltsch peut apporter une contribution bienvenue à un ensemble de questions parmi les plus centrales de notre temps. Publiés pour la première fois en français, les textes présentés ici sont accompagnés d'un important appareil de commentaires historiques aidant le lecteur à reconstituer le contexte et la genèse des débats en cause. This paper presents the correspondence in the year 1799 between Jeronimo de Bosch, the curator of the university of Leiden, and Kant or rather F. Th. Rink, who obviously was writing on behalf of Kant. The correspondence was initiated by a letter that de Bosch sent on 6 July 1799 to Kant accompanied by a lengthy poem on Kant's ethics. This paper presents two critically-edited, hitherto unknown letters by Rink to De Bosch and an autograph by Kant. These letters provide (...) us with new materials pertaining to the development of and Kant's involvement in Rink's edition of Mancherley zur Geschichte der metacritischen Invasion, the so-called „Gedächtniszettel“ and Kant's activities in the summer of 1799 while editing his so-called Opus postumum. It also sheds new light on the reception of Kant's philosophy in Holland, mainly with respect to De Bosch's Kantian sources. (shrink)

This paper argues that the revisions made for the second edition of Kant’s Anthropology are made by Kant himself.

This paper deals with the importance of Fichte’s first visit at the Stift of Tübingen on his philosophical development, ultimately leading to the formulation of the outlines of his wl 1794/5. This paper aims to show that Fichte had been forced to his criticism of Reinhold and than that of Kant by arguments addressed by the Tübingen professor Johann Friedrich Flatt. Therefore, Fichte’s own presentation of his philosophical awakening, attributed to the influence of his Aenesidemus-reading seems to be a skilful (...) retouching of the historical facts. If the presented hypothesis can take some plausibility it opens an interesting perspective on the development of post-Kantian philosophy, as Flatt’s criticism of Reinhold and Kant was not only of importance for Fichte, but also for Hegel and Schelling, albeit denied by all of them.In diesem Beitrag soll gezeigt werden, dass Fichte zu seiner Kant- und Reinhold-Kritik und damit letztendlich auch zu den ersten Schritten auf dem Wege zu seiner eigenen philosophischen Position – ausmündend in die wl von 1794 – auch durch die Kritik Johann Friedrich Flatts an Kant und Reinhold genötigt wurde. Die spätere Darstellung seiner Anfänge durch Fichte selbst, die dem Einfluss der Aenesidemus-Lektüre für seine philosophische Entwicklung die größte Wirksamkeit zuschrieb, könnte unter diesem Aspekt als eine geschickte Retouche der historischen Tatsachen bewertet werden, auf die es in diesem Beitrag geht. Kann die hier aufgestellte Hypothese einige Plausibilität für sich beanspruchen, eröffnet sich eine interessante Perspektive auf die weitere Ausbildung der nachkantischen Philosophie, sofern Flatts Kant- und Reinhold-Kritik nicht nur für Fichte, sondern auch für Hegel und Schelling einen wichtigen – wenn auch von ihnen verleugneten – Stellenwert hatte. Sicher nicht problematisch ist die Behauptung, daß Fichte in seiner Grundlage der gesammten Wissenschaftslehre von 1794/95 eine Begründung der Transzendentalphilosophie unternimmt. Von großer Wichtigkeit muß deshalb auch die Frage sein, ob ihm das auch gelungen ist. Ich will die Problemstellung der Grundlage von 1794/95 zunächst im Ausgang von Kant und Reinhold entwickeln und anschließend auf ein Begründungsproblem eingehen, das m. E. weder von Fichte noch von der neueren Forschungsliteratur angemessen berücksichtigt ist. Vorausgreifend kann dieses Problem so bestimmt werden, daß Fichte (...) die Qualitätskategorie der Realität - das »Ich bin« des ersten Grundsatzes - nicht mit dem dritten Grundsatz der Bestimmung in Einklang bringen kann, da die Limitation oder die Bestimmbarkeit von Fichte quantitativ und nicht qualitativ verstanden wird. This paper analyzes, first, the reception of Schelling’s philosophy in the environment of Kant in Königsberg, and second in Kantian writings published by his students Jäsche and Rink. – The only two passages Kant mentions Schelling are to be found in the latest leaves of the Opus postumum. Here Schelling’s philosophy is characterized as transcendental idealism. In current research it became rather common to interpret these passages as a positive account of Schelling’s philosophy, moreover, that Kant recognized Schelling’s transcendental idealism (...) as an improvement of his own philosophy. However, in the latest leaves of the Opus postumum the term transcendental idealism is – remarkably – strongly linked with Spinozism. In this paper I argue, thirdly, that Kant in the Opus postumum employs transcendental idealism in a negative way in order to distinguish his own transcendental philosophy clearly from the wrong philosophical account transcendental idealism brings forward. This contribution presents for the first time in critical edition two early speeches written by Reinhold. Reinhold wrote them in 1783 to be delivered during meetings of the Viennese Masonic Lodge “Zur wahren Eintracht” (To True Harmony) of which he was a member. The first, “Über die Kunst des Lebens zu genüssen” (On the art of enjoying life), discusses the best way for Masons to wisely deal with the joys and pains of life. In the second, “Der Werth einer Gesellschaft (...) hängt von der Beschaffenheit ihrer Glieder ab” (The worth of a society depends on the disposition of its members), Reinhold discusses the nature of the Masonic society from an Illuminatist point of view. This second speech is especially relevant with regard to Reinhold’s views on the Enlightenment and his later reception of Kant. (shrink)
