The Axiomatic Method and the Foundations of Science: Historical Roots of Mathematical Physics in Göttingen.Ulrich Majer - 2001 - Vienna Circle Institute Yearbook 8:11-33.
The aim of the paper is this: Instead of presenting a provisional and necessarily insufficient characterization of what mathematical physics is, I will ask the reader to take it just as that, what he or she thinks or believes it is, yet to be prepared to revise his opinion in the light of what I am going to tell. Because this is precisely, what I intend to do. I will challenge some of the received or standard views about mathematical physics (...)

Hilbert’s Program to Axiomatize Physics and Its Impact on Schlick, Carnap and Other Members of the Vienna Circle.Ulrich Majer - 2002 - Vienna Circle Institute Yearbook 9:213-224.
In recent years the works of Friedman, Howard and many others have made obvious what perhaps was always self-evident. Namely, that the philosophy of the logical empiricists was shaped primarily by Einstein and his invention of the theory of relativity, whereas Hilbert and his axiomatic approach to the exact sciences had comparatively little impact on the logical empiricists and their understanding of science — if they had any effect at all. This is in one respect quite astonishing, insofar as Einstein (...)

The “Axiomatic Method” and Its Constitutive Role in Physics.Ulrich Majer - 2014 - Perspectives on Science 22 (1):56-79.
The dramatic development of physics in the twentieth century has thrown philosophy into a crisis regarding its self-image, from which today's philosophy has still not fully recovered.1 The crisis had two consequences or complementary manifestations: First, there was a gradual retreat of philosophy from the natural sciences. Because physics turned out to be an autonomous discipline, which aims at cognition of nature apparently totally independent of any kind of philosophy, "natural philosophy" as a particular branch of philosophy seemed superfluous. Second, (...)

Das Verhältnis von Mathematik und Metaphysik in Kants Theorie der Naturwissenschaft.Ulrich Majer & Rainer Stuhlmann-Laeisz - 1975 - Grazer Philosophische Studien 1 (1):165-188.

Husserl Between Frege’s Logicism And Hilbert’s Formalism.Ulrich Majer - 2009 - In Baltic International Yearbook of Cognition, Logic and Communication. pp. 1-21.
The traditional view regarding the philosophy of mathematics in the twentieth century is the dogma of three schools: Logicism, Intuitionism and Formalism. The problem with this dogma is not, at least not first and foremost, that it is wrong, but that it is biased and essentially incomplete. 'Biased' because it was formulated by one of the involved parties, namely the logical empiricists - if I see it right - in order to make their own position look more agreeable with Intuitionism (...)

    Weyls Kritik an Dedekinds Zahlbegriff.Ulrich Majer - 1992 - Dialectica 46 (2):141-149.

The main fields to which he contributed include various disciplines of pure and applied mathematics, mathematical and theoretical physics, logic, theoretical computer science, and computer architecture. Von Neumann was also actively involved in politics and science management and he had a major impact on US government decisions during, and especially after, the Second World War. There exist several popular books on his personality and various collections (...)

Ulrich Beck's best selling Risk Society established risk on the sociological agenda. It brought together a wide range of issues centering on environmental, health and personal risk, provided a rallying ground for researchers and activists in a variety of social movements and acted as a reference point for state and local policies in risk management. The Risk Society and Beyond charts the progress of Beck's ideas and traces their evolution. It demonstrates why the issues raised by Beck reverberate widely (...)

Epistemic Erotetic Search Scenarios.Paweł Łupkowski, Ondrej Majer, Michal Peliš & Mariusz Urbański - 2018 - Logic and Logical Philosophy 27 (3):301-328.
The aim of this paper is to introduce erotetic search scenarios known from Inferential Erotetic Logic by using the framework of epistemic erotetic logic. The key notions used in this system are those of askability and epistemic erotetic implication. Scenarios are supposed to represent all rational strategies of an agent solving the problem posed by the initial question where the interaction with an external information source is seen as a series of updates of the agent’s knowledge.

This paper traces the empiricist program from early debates between nativism and behaviorism within philosophy, through debates about early connectionist approaches within the cognitive sciences, and up to their recent iterations within the domain of deep learning. We demonstrate how current debates on the nature of cognition via deep network architecture echo some of the core issues from the Chomsky/Quine debate and investigate the strength of support offered by these various lines of research to the empiricist standpoint. Referencing literature from (...)

The Cosmopolitan Society and Its Enemies.Ulrich Beck - 2002 - Theory, Culture and Society 19 (1-2):17-44.
At the beginning of the 21st century the conditio humana cannot be understood nationally or locally but only globally. This constitutes a revolution in the social sciences. The `sociological imagination' so far has basically been a nation state imagination. The main problem is how to redefine the sociological frame of reference in the horizon of a cosmopolitan imagination. For the purpose of empirical research I distinguish between three concepts: interconnectedness, liquid modernity and cosmopolitization from within. The latter is a kind (...)

The aim was to verify the potential of holistic approaches towards the evaluation of human figure drawing. Groht-Marnat, Tharinger, Stark favour this approach, and findings seem to legitimize considerations about its diagnostic productivity. Yama, Dans-Lopez and Tarroja have identified bizarre and artistic quality criteria for drawing that have a relevant interpretative meaning. Within the study involving 525 normal adult subjects, the hypothesis of differences in personality traits and performance level produced by authors of selected types of drawings, was verified. The (...)
