Following an approach that is empirical but not psychological, and dialectical but not dialogical, in this book Maurice Finocchiaro defines concepts such as reasoning, argument, argument analysis, critical reasoning, methodological reflection, judgment, critical thinking, and informal logic. Including extended critiques of the views of many contemporary scholars, he also integrates into the discussion Arnauld's Port-Royal Logic, Gramsci's theory of intellectuals, and case studies from the history of science, particularly the work of Galileo, Newton, Huygens, and Lavoisier.

This article explores the integration of the seemingly disparate notions of care ethics and design thinking. The business community has adapted “design thinking” from engineering and architecture to facilitate innovation and problem solving through participatory processes. “Care ethics” is a relational approach to morality characterized by a concern for context, empathy, and action. Although design thinking is receiving significant attention and application in business practices, care ethics has only achieved limited traction among business ethicists in academia. “Caring design” is offered (...) as a mutually beneficial integration of the two ideas. Care ethics and design thinking have much in common. For example, the relational and responsive dimension of design thinking is analogous in some important ways, namely empathy and inquiry, to the relational and responsive approach of care ethics. The shared themes in care ethics and design thinking make the integration of the two plausible and reciprocal advantages make the combination compelling. Explicit ethical language can shape design thinking as more than a tool of productivity while the participatory processes of design thinking can aid in expanding the circle of care ethics as a social and political ethic. Furthermore, caring design may provide a palatable path for greater acceptance of care ethics among business professionals. An overview of design thinking and care ethics is offered prior to exploring how the synergies are mutually beneficial. There have been a number of publications in recent years on generalising the AGM paradigm to the Horn fragment of propositional logic. Most of them focused on adapting AGM contraction and revision to the Horn setting. It remains an open question whether the adapted Horn contraction and Horn revision are inter-definable as in the AGM case through the Levi and Harper identities. In this paper, we give a positive answer by providing methods for generating contraction and revision from their dual (...) operations. Noticeably, we cannot apply the Levi and Harper identities directly in such methods as the Horn fragment does not fully support negation. To overcome this difficulty, a Horn approximation technique called Horn strengthening is used. We show that Horn contraction generated from Horn revision is always plausible whereas Horn revision generated from Horn contraction is, in general, implausible and, to regain plausibility, the generating contraction has to be properly restricted. He introduces logical representations of these theories together with special deductive techniques for exploring their consequences that will provide linguists with a valuable tool for deriving and testing theoretical predictions and for experimenting with alternative (...) formulations of grammatical principles. Stabler's novel approach allows results to be deduced with straightforward calculations and provides a systematic framework for tackling the problem of how speakers can infer the properties of an utterance from principles of the grammar. The special treatment of equality, induction principles, and inclusion of a general method for collecting structures from proofs means that sophisticated linguistic arguments can be carried out in detail, giving a rich perspective to issues in linguistic theory and parsing. Ce travail a pour but de fournir des repères permettant d’évaluer dans quelles circonstances une séparation judiciaire parents-enfant doit être décidée. L’auteur, chef de service en psychiatrie de l’enfant au CHU de Saint-Étienne (hôpital Bellevue), décrit quatre profils à haut risque, qui montrent bien comment, quand une séparation est mise en place trop tardivement, ou alors quand elle est mal gérée, avec notamment des contacts parents-enfant insuffisamment protégés, on aboutit à des résultats dont le coût humain, financier, et social est (...) catastrophique : déficience intellectuelle (77 % des enfants adressés au service), échec scolaire, troubles graves du comportement avec violence, etc. Pour aider à y voir plus clair, il propose avec son équipe trois sortes de jalons : les premiers concernent la structuration psychique des parents, les deuxièmes la manière dont la pathologie parentale se manifeste dans l’interaction parents-enfant, et les troisièmes la manière dont l’enfant réagit face à la pathologie parentale. Enfin, il décrit les facteurs qui empêchent l’utilisation de ces jalons, principalement l’ancienneté de la loi de 1970 sur « l’assistance éducative », l’idéologie du lien familial, l’absence d’évaluation des actions menées, et la peur face à certains parents très violents. Dans les situations de divorce concernant des enfants petits, il est donc indispensable que les professionnels impliqués aient des connaissances précises concernant les besoins d’un nourrisson, et en particulier qu’ils soient familiers avec la théorie et la clinique de l’attachement. Un “philosophe des cultures” appelé Louis Gardet est devenu un “islamologue catholique” de renommée mondiale après avoir vécu, de 1933 à 1945, dans la “khalwa” des Petits Frères de Jésus à El-Abiodh Sidi Cheikh, en Algérie. Frère André “en religion”, disciple du bienheureux Charles de Foucauld et ami fidèle de Jacques Maritain, s'est employé, par ses ouvrages, à faire connaître l'islam aux chrétiens. En thomiste convaincu, il s'est interrogé sur les relations de la philosophie avec les diverses formes de la (...) mystique de l'Inde, du judaïsme, du christianisme et de l'islam : comment y apprécier la “mystique du Soi” et la “mystique de l'Autre”? Personnellement engagé dans le dialogue islamo-chrétien, il a ouvert la voie à une meilleure compréhension entre les disciples du Christ et les fidèles du Coran. Ardent défenseur d'un monothéisme personnaliste, commun aux uns et aux autres, il demeure, pour tous, un modèle d'humanisme œcuménique qui s'enracine dans la transcendance du Dieu d'Abraham. (shrink)
