A William Ernest Hocking Reader: With Commentary.John Lachs & D. Micah Hester (eds.) - 2004 - Nashville, TN: Vanderbilt University Press.
Leading Harvard philosophy professor William Ernest Hocking , author of 17 books and in his day second only to John Dewey in the breadth of his thinking, is now largely forgotten, and his once-influential writings are out of print. This volume, which combines a rich selection of Hocking's work with incisive essays by distinguished scholars, seeks to recover Hocking's valuable contributions to philosophical thought.

    William Ernest Hocking on Our Knowledge of God and Other Minds.Carroll R. Bowman - 1974 - Religious Studies 10 (1):45 - 66.
I attempt a thorough delineation of hocking's multiangular argument, and historically trace its genis to sources in james and royce. i argue that royce's logic of triadic relations shows the james-hocking to be untenable, and that hocking's version of intersubjectivity must be taken as an expression of tacit or autobiographical knowledge.

To me the decisive reason in favor of our minds meeting in some common objects at least is that, unless I make that supposition, I have no motive for assuming that your mind exists at all.

The Experience of Other Selves. Affinities and Differences between William Ernest Hocking and Edmund Husserl.Massimo Cisternino - 2020 - Discipline filosofiche. 30 (1):67-80.
This essay analyzes possible affinities and differences between William Ernest Hocking and Edmund Husserl in relation to the topic of solipsism and with particular emphasis on how it is that we encounter other minds in experience. Before comparing Hocking’s and Husserl’s ideas around such topics, the essay provides a brief reconstruction of William James’s and Josiah Royce’s engagement with them as a way of explaining why Hocking had a fascination for the question of how and under what (...)

Four papers on Hocking, short passages from his writings, and a selected list of his books and articles. Of the four papers, one is a tribute to Hocking by Brand Blanshard, first published in 1966; another is an essay on "Dialectic in the Unfolding of Hocking’s Thought," written by his son Richard, emeritus professor of philosophy at Emory University; the third and fourth are essays, by the two editors of the volume, on Hocking’s views regarding "insight" and "the self as (...)

  40. Liberty and Community: The Political Philosophy of William Ernest Hocking. [REVIEW]A. M. B. - 1974 - Review of Metaphysics 28 (2):359-360.
The author demonstrates that W. E. Hocking’s political philosophy deserves far more consideration than it has so far received not only for its being a study in political philosophy, something there is too little of in the American tradition, but also because of the importance of the problems which are the focus of the study, the problems of liberty and community. Thigpen organizes material from a wide range of sources in Hocking’s extensive bibliography into an orderly presentation that moves from (...)

    2. The equal status mentioned in Thesis 2 need not mean, "equally concrete" or "inclusive," but only, "equally real," where "real" means having a character of its own with reference to which opinions can be true or false. But becoming or process is alone fully concrete or inclusive, since if A is without becoming, and B becomes, then the togetherness of AB also becomes. A new constituent means a new totality. In this sense, becoming is the ultimate principle.

Scientific theory and religion.Ernest William Barnes - 1933 - Cambridge [Eng.],: The University press.
Ernest Barnes was invited to Aberdeen as Gifford Lecturer (1927-1929) to deliver lectures under the title of 'Scientific Theory and Religion'. The lectures were originally published in 1933 and sought to bring Christian doctrines together with the possibility of life on other planets. The magnitude of the universe, accompanied with some basic observations on biological development within it, makes speculation about the possibility of intelligent life in distant galaxies reasonable. Barnes believed that the Creation was made precisely for the (...)
