En esa declaración hay todo un método muy útil para la historia de la filosofía, y en consecuencia para la filosofía misma. Lo que Gaston Boissier nos propone en este trabajo divido en dos partes es el recorrido por la historia (...) de la idea de Humanidad (humanitas). Una historia esencialmente ligada a la penetración del helenismo en la Roma victoriosa de la República, y en su seno, de la filosofía académica en sentido estricto. La que aquí se enfoca es la que se modula a través de la Stoa media, con Panecio a la cabeza y su alianza con el círculo de Escipión Emiliano. Una historia que recibe su molde en Cicerón. (shrink)

En la segunda parte de su trabajo, Boissier trata en profundidad el carácter y constitución del círculo de los Escipiones y su modulación de la humanitas al compás de sus relaciones con el helenismo. Si bien primero se detiene en deslindar las herencias y distancias entre el teatro de Terencio y el de Plauto y su tratamiento de la intimidad romana. Abordará a continuación el problema del cosmopolitismo de filiación helénica y su relación con el patriotismo romano de la (...) mano de Cicerón para terminar con una reflexión presentista que dice tanto de la Roma clásica como de la visión que Boissier tenía de su presente. Repasamos brevemente la vida y la obra de Gaston Boissier (1823-1908) que perteneció a la gran generación de sabios que regeneró los estudios históricos en Francia durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. De entre todos ellos (Renan, Taine o Fustel de Coulanges) Boissier siempre contó con el favor del público tanto por sus monografías como por sus artículos, muchos de ellos aparecidos en la Revue des Deux Mondes (1829-). De su éxito da cuenta también el gran (...) número de traducciones aparecidas en castellano, tanto en España como en Iberoamérica. Finalmente, expondremos a modo de presentación de la traducción de su trabajo sobre la idea de humanitas, su concepción de la historia que habrá de rastrearse en sus escritos, pues nunca la expuso de forma sistemática. Augustine′s conversion to Christianity in A.D. 386 is a pivotal moment not only in his own life, but in Christian and world history, for the theology of Augustine set the course of theological and cultural development in the western Christian church. But to what exactly was Augustine converted? Scholars have long debated whether he really converted to Christianity in 386, whether he was a Platonist, and, if he adhered to both Platonism and Christianity, which dominated his thought. The debate of (...) the last thirteen decades spans an immense body of literature in multiple languages. In this literature, four major views on Augustine′s conversion may be discerned. The first view is associated with Gaston Boissier and Adolph von Harnack, and was famously championed by Prosper Alfaric: that Augustine in 386 converted to neo-Platonism but not to Christianity. Second, there is the view recently promoted by Catherine Conybeare: that Augustine in 386 converted to Christianity and rejected neo-Platonism. Third, there is the view that he converted to Christianity and was also a neo-Platonist; the most famous adherents of this view are Robert J. O′Connell and Pierre Courcelle. Finally, there is the view recently promoted by Carol Harrison: that Augustine committed to Christianity in 386, yet did not utterly reject neo-Platonism; rather, he aimed to develop a Christian faith that was informed by neo-Platonic insight. À travers la Rythmique, Émile Jaques-Dalcroze contribue à inventer une nouvelle façon de jouer : confronté à l’arythmie de ses élèves, il est conduit à renouveler le solfège. El presente trabajo parte de un significativo reconocimiento: en el seno de las distintas corrientes de la filosofía política contemporánea, el exponente más importante del liberalismo de fines del siglo XX, John Rawls, es uno de los autores que más reivindica la obra de Rousseau. A partir de este dato, dividimos el escrito en dos partes: en la primera, nos acercamos a la novedosa interpretación que el filósofo del siglo XX realiza sobre el autor ginebrino, subrayando su comprensión de amour (...) propre, que es la clave con la cual resuelve las contradicciones aparentes entre las obras de Rousseau; en la segunda sección, nos adentramos a una comparación estructural entre la Teoría de la Justica y el Contrato Social, en la que contrastamos el problema de la fundación y el de la estabilidad, y marcamos ciertas críticas comunes que pueden realizarse en este orden a ambos autores. This article discusses Leibniz’s claim that every substance is endowed with the property of perception in connection with Platonism, rationalism and the problem of substance monism. It is argued that Leibniz’s ascription of perception to every substance relies on his Platonic conception of finite things as imitations of God, in whom there is ‘infinite perception’. Leibniz’s Platonism, however, goes beyond the notion of imitation, including also the emanative causal relation and the logical (i.e. definitional) priority of the absolute over the (...) limited. It is proposed that Leibniz’s endorsement of Platonism, in conjunction with some rationalist elements of his philosophy, implies a monistic conception of particulars as modifications of a single substance. Following some scholars and opposing others, the article offers evidence that Leibniz accepted this implication during the last years of his Paris period. However, it is further argued that it was precisely the idea of perception as a property of every substance that allowed Leibniz to find a way out of monism after that period. More specifically, the article defends the view that what made room for ontological pluralism within Leibniz’s rationalist and Platonic outlook was the idea that perception is the property which constitutes the very being of substances: substances are their perceptions. Neoplatonic commentators found in Aristotle’s Categories a basis for participation and self-predication (or reflex predication). Although Simplicius seems to accept a certain type of self-predication (e.g., “quality is qualified”), Pseudo-Dionysius gives arguments against self-predication among caused things, making exception only for the divine nature insofar as the predicates preexist in their Cause (e.g., “God’s Beauty is beautiful”). Theologians such as Philip the Chancellor (1165/85–1236) and Thomas Aquinas adapt the Neoplatonic view of divine transcendence while also elaborating a transcendental conception of (...) metaphysics. These theologians in effect make ontological space for created substantial goodness. One sign of this second beginning in metaphysics is the ability to make reflex predications about creatures (e.g., “goodness is good”). Philip the Chancellor argues for this reflex predication in Summa de Bono (q. 9), and Thomas defends it at length in De veritate (q. 21, a. 4 ad 4). (shrink)

RESUMO Um problema de longa data na erudição aristotélica diz respeito à questão de como reconciliar a dupla descrição de Aristóteles da metafísica como ontologia (a ciência universal do ser enquanto ser) e teologia (a ciência da substância imutável e separada). Uma tentativa importante de responder a esta questão (iniciada primeiro por G. Patzig) consiste em dizer que a substância imutável e separada é focalmente anterior (ou o significado focal da) substância e, portanto, de ser em geral (uma vez que (...) a substância é focalmente anterior a ser no geral). Este artigo visa refutar esse tipo de abordagem para o problema da unidade da metafísica de Aristóteles, argumentando que (i) as relações de significado focal implicam a prioridade lógica (definição) dos itens anteriores sobre os itens dependentes situados em tais relações; (ii) a substância imutável e separada não é logicamente anterior aos outros tipos de substâncias distinguidas por Aristóteles; e, portanto, (iii) a substância imutável e separada não é focalmente anterior à (o significado focal de) substância. André Schaeffner (1895-1980), auteur du grand ouvrage Origine des instruments de musique paru en 1936, propose une réflexion sur l’instrument de musique qui est loin d’être confinée au seul champ de l’ethnologie. La considération de la musique de son temps, notamment en l’œuvre de Stravinsky, la méditation sur l’origine du théâtre et sur la tragédie, avec Nietzsche, contribuent à forger une conception de l’instrument qui est inséparable d’une philosophie de la musique. En explorant le thème central des « origines corporelles (...) » de la musique, cet article présente trois aspects principaux au vu desquels André Schaeffner s’avère problématiser le statut de l’instrument en relation avec le corps sonore et rythmicien : le refus du dualisme entre la voix et l’instrument, le refus d’une origine manuelle des instruments, enfin l’idée d’une organologie du théâtre. En un artículo de 1975, titulado “Subjetividad e intersubjetividad, sujeto y persona”, artículo que da inicio a Hermeneutik im Rückblick (1995), Gadamer señala que a inicios del siglo XX se produce un nuevo giro crítico contra el concepto de “sistema de la filosofía”, el cual se constata atendiendo al problema de la intersubjetividad. Allí, en tan sólo algo más de una línea, Gadamer señala la magnitud e influencia de la obra de Unamuno en este giro de la filosofía: “el comienzo (...) parece que estuvo en España, donde Unamuno sirvió de inspiración a toda una nueva generación” (2007, 12).El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una lectura sobre la recepción gadameriana de la obra de Unamuno tendiente a brindar una posible respuesta sobre los motivos que llevaron al filósofo alemán a realizar tal afirmación. Siguiendo esta línea pretendo indagar también qué había en la obra de Unamuno de interés para Gadamer, más allá de la lectura existencialista que se había desarrollado hasta entonces.Para ello, primero, y para contextualizar, reseñaré brevemente la recepción de la obra de Unamuno en Alemania, y pasaré revista sobre las investigaciones de los últimos 30 años que enmarcan los estudios de Unamuno bajo la koiné de la época: la hermenéutica; lo cual permite rever su obra fuera del marco existencialista. Luego, y como punto más importante, indicaré y argumentaré, a partir de los textos de Unamuno, sobre las razones que sustentan la afirmación gadameriana que ubica al filósofo vasco como iniciador del giro hermenéutico. À l’aide d’une autobiographie professionnelle de soixante ans de recherche en formation continue des adultes, l’article explicite les références qui ont ancré philosophiquement la construction d’une problématique rythmoformatrice des apprentissages adultes tout au long et dans tous les secteurs de la vie. Cette construction s’est opérée sur trois périodes transatlantiques : une période initiale en Europe (1959-1969) d’entrée dans la vie adulte (20-30 ans) en recherche-formation laborieuse de sens à la vie ; une seconde au Québec (1969-1985) de conception, construction (...) et conduite de programmes de recherche en éducation permanente à la Faculté de l’éducation permanente de l’Université de Montréal (30-45 ans) ; et enfin une troisième comme professeur-chercheur à l’Université de Tours (1985-2007) en co-création de diplômes et de groupes de recherche-formation universitaire pour adultes (45- 67 ans). Deux ancrages philosophiques préscolaires – la caverne de Platon et l’Émile de Rousseau – et un ancrage postscolaire et transdisciplinaire d’une épistémologie dialectique systémique, apparaissent progressivement contribuer de façon dominante à la conceptualisation d’une problématique rythmoformatrice du cours de la vie adulte, en deux temps (expérientiel/formel) et trois mouvements (auto, socio et écoformation). In January 2001 I received a letter from Jacques Derrida. The letter was a response to an article I had written about the concept of disinterest. What I did not know at the time was that he was in the midst of his seminar on the death penalty, which includes his most sustained interrogation of disinterest and interest. This essay examines the history of disinterest as a death penalty. Derrida challenges the possibility of such a history, arguing both for the (...) madness of disinterest and the tenacity of another kind of interest. In The Dialectic of Duration Gaston Bachelard addresses the nature of time in response to the writings of his great contemporary, Henri Bergson. For Bachelard, experienced time is irreducibly fractured and interrupted, as indeed are material events. At stake is an entire conception of the physical world, an entire approach to the philosophy of science. It was in this work that Bachelard first marshalled all the components of his visionary philosophy of science, with its steady insistence on the human (...) context and subtle encompassing of the irrational within the rational. This paper analyzes and discusses the principle of Succession, formulated by Kant in 1755s Nova Dilucidatio. The principle, as we will see, shows that the kind of causally isolated substances invoked in pre-established harmony are incapable of undergoing change. After first analyzing Kant’s specific arguments in order to prove his principle, I shall argue that the Kantian critique against the leibnizians refers to the general bias consisting in putting on a level the logical and real realms, and consequently to confuse (...) the concepts of logical ground and real cause.
