Matthew Walker's model overcomes the unrefined classical concept of consolidation as a unitary process. Presently still confined in its scope to selective data mainly referring to procedural motor learning, the model nonetheless provides a valuable starting point for further refinements, which would be required for a more comprehensive account of different types and aspects of human memory consolidation.

Regular musical activity as a complex multimodal lifestyle activity is proposed to be protective against age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. This cross-sectional study investigated the association and interplay between musical instrument playing during life, multi-domain cognitive abilities and brain morphology in older adults from the DZNE-Longitudinal Cognitive Impairment and Dementia Study study. Participants reporting having played a musical instrument across three life periods were compared to controls without a history of musical instrument playing, well-matched for reserve proxies of education, (...) intelligence, socioeconomic status and physical activity. Participants with musical activity outperformed controls in global cognition, working memory, executive functions, language, and visuospatial abilities, with no effects seen for learning and memory. The musically active group had greater gray matter volume in the somatosensory area, but did not differ from controls in higher-order frontal, temporal, or hippocampal volumes. However, the association between gray matter volume in distributed frontal-to-temporal regions and cognitive abilities was enhanced in participants with musical activity compared to controls. We show that playing a musical instrument during life relates to better late-life cognitive abilities and greater brain capacities in OA. Musical activity may serve as a multimodal enrichment strategy that could help preserve cognitive and brain health in late life. Longitudinal and interventional studies are needed to support this notion. (shrink)

Aus der im Kern wissenschaftlichen Frage um die Natur der menschlichen Geistesfunktionen entwickelte sich rasch ein persönlicher Streit, der in der Schärfe von Inhalt und Ausdruck seinesgleichen sucht. Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist die detaillierte linguistische Analyse von Polemik und Argumentation in diesem Streit anhand umfangreicher Textauszüge, wobei erstmals überhaupt eingehendere sprachliche Untersuchungen zu Vogt und Wagner vorgelegt werden.

Carl Vogt’s quarrel with Rudolph Wagner is considered to be a culmination of the materialism dispute in the 19th century. Out of this basically academic issue on the nature of human mental functions, a personal dispute quickly developed which was unrivalled in thematic incisiveness and expression. The aim of this study is the detailed linguistic analysis of the polemics and argumentation in this dispute based on extensive text excerpts, in which for the first time detailed linguistic studies on Vogt (...) and Wagner are presented. Little is known about research misconduct within industry and how it compares to universities, even though a lot of biomedical research is performed by–or in collaboration with–commercial entities. Therefore, we sent an e-mail invitation to participate in an anonymous computer-based survey to all university researchers having received a biomedical research grant or scholarship from one of the two national academic research funders of Belgium between 2010 and 2014, and to researchers working in large biomedical companies or spin-offs in Belgium. The (...) validated survey included questions about various types of research misconduct committed by respondents themselves and observed among their colleagues in the last three years. Prevalences of misconduct were compared between university and industry respondents using binary logistic regression models, with adjustments for relevant personal characteristics, and with significance being accepted for p < 0.01. The survey was sent to 1766 people within universities and an estimated 255 people from industry. Response rates were 43 and 48%, and usable information was available for 617 and 100 respondents, respectively. In general, research misconduct was less likely to be reported by industry respondents compared to university respondents. Significant differences were apparent for one admitted action and three observed actions, always with lower prevalences for industry compared to universities, except for plagiarism. This survey, based on anonymous self-report, shows that research misconduct occurs to a substantial degree among biomedical researchers from both industry and universities. (shrink)

Why are negative emotions so central in art reception far beyond tragedy? Revisiting classical aesthetics in the light of recent psychological research, we present a novel model to explain this much discussed (apparent) paradox. We argue that negative emotions are an important resource for the arts in general, rather than a special license for exceptional art forms only. The underlying rationale is that negative emotions have been shown to be particularly powerful in securing attention, intense emotional involvement, and high memorability, (...) and hence is precisely what artworks strive for. Two groups of processing mechanisms are identified that conjointly adopt the particular powers of negative emotions for art's purposes. The first group consists of psychological distancing mechanisms that are activated along with the cognitive schemata of art, representation, and fiction. These schemata imply personal safety and control over continuing or discontinuing exposure to artworks, thereby preventing negative emotions from becoming outright incompatible with expectations of enjoyment. This distancing sets the stage for a second group of processing components that allow art recipients to positively embrace the experiencing of negative emotions, thereby rendering art reception more intense, more interesting, more emotionally moving, more profound, and occasionally even more beautiful. These components include compositional interplays of positiveandnegative emotions, the effects of aesthetic virtues of using the media of (re)presentation (musical sound, words/language, color, shapes) on emotion perception, and meaning-making efforts. Moreover, our Distancing-Embracing model proposes that concomitant mixed emotions often help integrate negative emotions into altogether pleasurable trajectories. (shrink)

In this paper we address the question of how it can be possible for a non-expert to acquire justified true belief from expert testimony. We discuss reductionism and epistemic trust as theoretical approaches to answer this question and present a novel solution that avoids major problems of both theoretical options: Performative Expert Testimony (PET). PET draws on a functional account of expertise insofar as it takes the expert’s visibility as a good informant capable to satisfy informational needs as equally important (...) as her specific skills and knowledge. We explain how PET generates justification for testimonial belief, which is at once assessable for non-experts and maintains the division of epistemic labor between them and the experts. Thereafter we defend PET against two objections. First, we point out that the non-expert’s interest in acquiring widely assertable true beliefs and the expert’s interest in maintaining her status as a good informant counterbalances the relativist account of justification at work in PET. Second, we show that with regard to the interests at work in testimonial exchanges between experts and non-experts, PET yields a better explanation of knowledge-acquisition from expert testimony than externalist accounts of justification such as reliabilism. As our arguments ground in a conception of knowledge, which conceives of belief-justification as a declarative speech act, throughout the rearmost sections of this paper we also indicate to how such a conception is operationalized in PET. A beneficial effect of gesture on learning has been demonstrated in multiple domains, including mathematics, science, and foreign language vocabulary. However, because gesture is known to co-vary with other non-verbal behaviors, including eye gaze and prosody along with face, lip, and body movements, it is possible the beneficial effect of gesture is instead attributable to these other behaviors. We used a computer-generated animated pedagogical agent to control both verbal and non-verbal behavior. Children viewed lessons on mathematical equivalence in which an (...) avatar either gestured or did not gesture, while eye gaze, head position, and lip movements remained identical across gesture conditions. Children who observed the gesturing avatar learned more, and they solved problems more quickly. Moreover, those children who learned were more likely to transfer and generalize their knowledge. These findings provide converging evidence that gesture facilitates math learning, and they reveal the potential for using technology to study non-verbal behavior in controlled experiments. (shrink)

Das Thema "Nietzsche und die Romantik" stellt eine unerschöpfliche Forschungsquelle und dabei ein mehrdimensionales, hermeneutisches Problem in der Literatur- und Philosophiegeschichte dar. Als erster nahm Karl Joël in seiner 1905 erschienenen Monographie "Nietzsche und die Romantik" die Frage der geistigen Verwandtschaft Nietzsches mit romantischen Autoren und der Verwurzelung seiner Philosophie in dem romantischen Komplex unter die Lupe. Aufschlussreiche Forschungsergebnisse lieferten darüber hinaus die Arbeiten von Ernst Behler, Linda Duncan, Ingrid Hennemann Barale, Steffen Dietzsch, Norbert Langer und Dirk von Petersdorff. (...) Insgesamt gehen die Meinungen der Forscher über Nietzsches Verhältnis zur Romantik auseinander. Die einen lehnen entschieden die These, Nietzsche sei der Fortsetzer der romantischen Linie, ab. Die anderen dagegen betonen die weltanschaulichen Ähnlichkeiten in der Denkweise des deutschen Philosophen und der Jenaer Romantiker und halten Nietzsche für den wichtigsten Entdecker der romantischen Motive. Es unterliegt keinem Zweifel, dass Nietzsches Beziehung zur Romantik durch Ambivalenz gekennzeichnet ist. Man muss aber in seinem Falle zwischen den verschiedenen Gestalten und Phasen der Romantik unterscheiden. Mit Sicherheit tritt er gegen die Romantik als die schmerzen- und leidensmildernde Erscheinung auf, die mit "Hunger" und nicht "Überfluss" zu assoziieren ist. Die romantische Kunst als "stimulans des Lebens" wird dann der dionysischen gegenübergestellt, die das Leben bejaht und das Tragische am Leben erscheinen lässt. Die negative Einschätzung der Romantik verbindet sich hier vor allem mit der Kritik an Wagner und Schopenhauer, also den absoluten Meistern aus der Frühphase im Schaffen Nietzsches. Einen anderen Bezugspunkt bietet aber die unterschwellige, geistige Verwandtschaft Nietzsches mit den Schöpfern der Frühromantik, worauf bereits Ernst Behler hingewiesen hat. Die Periodisierung und Differenzierung der Romantik lag zu Lebzeiten Nietzsches nicht vor. Es bleibt auch eine offene Frage, inwieweit der Autor des "Zarathustra" mit den Werken der Jenaer Romantiker vertraut war. Seine Novalis-Lektüre ist zwar dokumentiert, die ästhetischen Vorlesungen von August Wilhelm Schlegel sollen ihm bekannt gewesen sein, aber die eventuelle Friedrich-Schlegel-Lektüre kann durchaus in Frage gestellt werden. Empirische Befunde können somit nicht als ein Ausgangspunkt für die Bearbeitung der Parallelen im Werk Nietzsches und der Jenaer Romantiker dienen. Den Schwerpunkt soll man auf die geistig verwandte ästhetische Weltwahrnehmung und die aktive Form des Denkens legen, das von der widersprüchlichen Struktur des Seins ausgeht. Die Hauptidee gründet sich auf die zerstörerisch-schöpferische, und dadurch ironische, Konzeption des Lebens, die an das Postulat der Poetisierung und Revolutionisierung der Welt, das in-Frage-stellen der Wahrheit und die dynamische, perspektivistische Weltauffassung gebunden ist. Zu den wichtigsten Begriffen der frühromantischen Ästhetik gehören: Poesie, Ironie, Witz, Humor, Fantasie; Nietzsche führt die Kategorie der Kunst, des Dionysischen, des Tragischen und des Übermenschen ein. In beiden Fällen handelt es sich um die Überzeugung, dass die Welt sich ständig in Bewegung, im Prozess des Schaffens befindet. Friedrich Nietzsche gehört zu der sogenannten ironischen Literatur, die Frühromantiker angefangen haben und die im 20. Jahrhundert von solchen Schriftstellern wie Thomas Mann, Walter Benjamin oder Ernst Jünger fortgesetzt wird. (shrink)

In this article, we discuss recent evidence from experimental economics on the impact of social preferences on workplace behavior. We focus on situations in which a single employer interacts with multiple employees. Traditionally, equity and efficiency have been seen as opposing aims in such work environments: individual pay-for-performance wage schemes maximize of efficiency but might lead to inequitable outcomes. We present findings from laboratory experiments that show under which circumstances partially incomplete contracts can create equitable work environments while at the (...) same time reaching surprisingly efficient outcomes. Most new drugs are protected by pharmaceutical patents, which give the patent holder exclusive control over that drug’s supply for 20 years. When the patent term expires, the drug becomes available for generic production by any company. The resulting competition typically leads to dramatic reductions in price. In Brazil, generic drugs are on average 40% cheaper than reference or brand-name drugs. In the United States, the Federal Drug Administration reports up to 85% price differences. Consumers in India have witnessed more (...) than 100-fold price reduction for antiretroviral drugs due to generic production. Research on the cognitive consequences of bilingualism typically proceeds by labeling participants as “monolingual” or “bilingual” and comparing performance on some measures across these groups. It is well-known that this approach has led to inconsistent results. However, the approach assumes that there are clear criteria to designate individuals as monolingual or bilingual, and more fundamentally, to determine whether a communication system counts as a unique language. Both of these assumptions may not be correct. The problem is particularly acute when participants (...) are asked to classify themselves or simply report how many languages they speak. Participants' responses to these questions are shaped by their personal perceptions of the criteria for making these judgments. This study investigated the perceptions underlying judgments of bilingualism by asking 528 participants to judge the extent to which a description of a fictional linguistic system constitutes a unique language and the extent to which a description of a fictional individual's linguistic competence qualifies that person as bilingual. The results show a range of responses for both concepts, indicating substantial ambiguity for these terms. Moreover, participants were asked to self-classify as monolingual or bilingual, and these decisions were not related to more objective information regarding the degree of bilingual experience obtained from a detailed questionnaire. These results are consistent with the notion that bilingualism is not categorical and that specific language experiences are important in determining the criteria for being bilingual. The results impact interpretations of research investigating group differences on the cognitive effects of bilingualism. (shrink)

We describe some of the ways that the field of content analysis is being transformed in an Era of Big Data. We argue that content analysis, from its beginning, has been concerned with extracting the main meanings of a text and mapping those meanings onto the space of a textual corpus. In contrast, we suggest that the emergence of new styles of text mining tools is creating an opportunity to develop a different kind of content analysis that we describe as (...) a computational hermeneutics. Here the goal is to go beyond a mapping of the main meaning of a text to mimic the kinds of questions and concerns that have traditionally been the focus of a hermeneutically grounded close reading, a reading that focuses on what Kenneth Burke described as the poetic meanings of a text. We illustrate this approach by referring to our own work concerning the rhetorical character of US National Security Strategy documents. (shrink)

This paper studies intersection and union type assignment for the calculus , a proof-term syntax for Gentzen’s classical sequent calculus, with the aim of defining a type-based semantics, via setting up a system that is closed under conversion. We will start by investigating what the minimal requirements are for a system, for to be complete ; this coincides with System , the notion defined in Dougherty et al. [18]; however, we show that this system is not sound , so our (...) goal cannot be achieved. We will then show that System is also not complete, but can recover from this by presenting System as an extension of and showing that it satisfies completeness; it still lacks soundness. We show how to restrict so that it satisfies soundness as well by limiting the applicability of certain type assignment rules, but only when limiting reduction to call-by-name or call-by-value reduction; in restricting the system this way, we sacrifice completeness. These results when combined show that, with respect to full reduction, it is not possible to define a sound and complete intersection and union type assignment system for. (shrink)

We study the cube of type assignment systems, as introduced in Giannini et al. 87–126), and confront it with Barendregt's typed gl-cube . The first is obtained from the latter through applying a natural type erasing function E to derivation rules, that erases type information from terms. In particular, we address the question whether a judgement, derivable in a type assignment system, is always an erasure of a derivable judgement in a corresponding typed system; we show that this property holds (...) only for systems without polymorphism. The type assignment systems we consider satisfy the properties ‘subject reduction’ and ‘strong normalization’. Moreover, we define a new type assignment cube that is isomorphic to the typed one. Die Transformation der römischen Welt ist ein hoch aktuelles und viel diskutiertes Thema der Geschichtswissenschaft. Die Bedeutung von Verwandtschaft für diesen epochalen Prozess wurde bislang kaum untersucht. Der Sammelband schließt diese Lücke, indem er die Rolle der Verwandtschaft für die Umwandlung der sozialen Ordnung in den Blick nimmt. Er erweitert damit maßgeblich die Perspektive auf den Epochenumbruch von der Spätantike zum Mittelalter.

Matthew Lipman befriended me at an APA meeting in 1974. Through more than twenty years of phone calls, I got to chat with, consult with, and learn from Matt the details and challenges of developing philosophy for children. He acknowledged that I convinced him that the program needed “branding,” lest anyone present similar-sounding programs—some of which might be good and others not. He got a snippet of a video of my teaching troubled sixth-graders with his book Harry Stottlemeier’s Discovery on (...) the Today Show with Bryant Gumbel. That did much to shape my future, as did branding for sustaining Matt’s program. Lipman and I spoke by phone several times every year from 1976 until the mid-1990s. (shrink)

This paper offers arguments against Francesco Ademollo’s redundancy thesis about the notion of the correctness of names in the Cratylus. The paper distinguishes between two versions of the redundancy thesis and provides arguments against each of them. In addition to supporting the rejection of both versions of the redundancy thesis, the arguments provide new interpretations of important issues inside and outside of the Cratylus. These issues include the philological evidence from the Classical period (e.g. Nicomachean Ethics, VI.9, 1142b6–12, on euboulia (...) as a kind of correctness), the view of correctness expressed by Plato’s Socrates in other dialogues, and Socrates’ initial discussion with Cratylus (in particular 428e–429b). Summary This article presents the person–environment analysis as a framework for participatory and holistic research. By using common methods of qualitative research and analysis, it is possible to capture the present situation of a person. The person–environment analysis is built on Kurt Lewin’s field theory and a further development of its system of visual representation of the life space. It is argued that the person–environment analysis offers a frame to represent the perceived subjective situation of a person, which can be (...) used in research, yet offers the possibility of counseling and intervention. Following several earlier, relatively obscure occurrences of the term in Latin and French sources, the concept of nihilism first enters the broader philosophical discussion in Europe toward the end of the eighteenth century as a critique of German idealism, above all that of Kant and Fichte. Although essential scholarship on this early history has long been available in German, it has remained largely neglected by discussions of nihilism in English. Olson’s contribution on “nihilism” in Edwards’ standard Encyclopedia of Philosophy, though (...) certainly dated, is perhaps typical. Nietzsche, of course, is presented as the most prominent historical figure, with brief mention given to Russian origins and to nineteenth-century uses of the term as a condemnation of atheism. Yet the fundamental philosophical development of nihilism in the context of German idealism receives no attention whatsoever. At least as early as 1900, German scholars had already traced the first use of the concept back to Jacobi, specifically to his influential “Circular Letter to Fichte” of 1799. However, only the most recent studies in English even begin to acknowledge this crucial early development. (shrink)
