Peirce’s Existential Graphs: A Practical Alternative to Truth Tables for Critical Thinkers.Morgan Forbes - 1997 - Teaching Philosophy 20 (4):387-400.
Teachers of critical thinking courses are justified in teaching some amount of propositional logic, especially logical equivalence and formal proofs for validity, but the otherwise informal nature of most critical thinking courses makes it difficult to decide how much propositional logic should enter a course. Most instructors use truth tables to teach the above two topics but they are too off-putting to be useful to most critical thinking students (as are derivations, the common alternative to truth tables). This paper presents (...)

    Questioning Feminine Connection.Morgan E. Forbes - 1997 - Hypatia 12 (2):140 - 151.
This paper examines Nancy Chodorow's theory of feminine connection and masculine separation in The Reproduction of Mothering. First it demonstrates that, contrary to many feminists' interpretations, Chodorow's theory does not portray masculine separation as a social problem to which feminine connection is the solution. Then it shows that Chodorow's apparently intended theory is incoherent. Finally, it argues that Chodorow's claims imply another theory that is coherent and that deserves feminists' attention.

The Role of Strategic Conversations with Stakeholders in the Formation of Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy.Morgan P. Miles, Linda S. Munilla & Jenny Darroch - 2006 - Journal of Business Ethics 69 (2):195-205.
This paper explores the role of strategic conversations in corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy formation. The authors suggest that explicitly engaging stakeholders in the CSR strategy-making process, through the mechanism of strategic conversations, will minimize future stakeholder concerns and enhance CSR strategy making. In addition, suggestions for future research are offered to enable a better understanding of effective strategic conversation processes in CSR strategy making and the resulting performance outcomes.

    Innovation, ethics, and entrepreneurship.Morgan P. Miles, Linda S. Munilla & Jeffrey G. Covin - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 54 (1):97-101.
This paper is a response to Ray's recent proposal that the intellectual property rights attached to potentially life saving/life sustaining innovations should become public goods in cases where markets are either unable or unwilling to pay for the creation of the intellectual property. Using a free market approach to innovation based on Western moral philosophy, we suggest that treating intellectually protected life saving/life sustaining innovations as public goods will likely reduce social welfare over the long term.

Social Enterprises and the Performance Advantages of a Vincentian Marketing Orientation.Morgan P. Miles, Martie-Louise Verreynne & Belinda Luke - 2014 - Journal of Business Ethics 123 (4):549-556.
This study focuses on the managerial issue of should social enterprises become more marketing oriented. It adapts the Kohli et al. MARKOR marketing orientation scale to measure the adoption of marketing by SEs. The items capture Vincentian-based values to leverage business in service to the poor as a measure of a Vincentian marketing orientation. A VMO is an organisational wide value-driven philosophy of management that focuses a SE on meeting its objectives by adopting a more marketing orientated approach to serve (...)

Corporate reputation is an intangible asset that is related to marketing and financial performance. The social, economic, and global environment of the 1990'shas resulted in environmental performance becoming an increasingly important component of a company'sreputation. This paper explores the relationship between reputation, environmental performance, and financial performance, and looks at the contingencies that impact environmental policy making.

Miracles and Moral Culpability: How To Murder Your Parishioners and Get Away With It.Morgan Luck - 2008 - Studies in Christian Ethics 21 (2):239-249.
I argue that there exists a proportional relationship between degrees of moral culpability and degrees of probability, where the more an agent believes her actions will result in certain consequences, the more morally culpable she is for these consequences. I assert that this degree of probability is necessarily diminished by the existence of active supernatural powers. Consequently, agents who believe in such powers are less morally culpable than agents who do not.

The constant gardener revisited: The effect ofsocial blackmail on the marketing concept, innovation, and entrepreneurship. [REVIEW]Morgan P. Miles, Linda S. Munilla & Jeffrey G. Covin - 2002 - Journal of Business Ethics 41 (3):287 - 295.
This paper discusses how adoption of the social dimensions of the marketing concept may unintentionally restrict innovation and corporate entrepreneurship, ultimately reducing social welfare. The impact of social marketing on innovation and entrepreneurship is discussed using the case of multinational pharmaceutical firms that are under pressure when marketing HIV treatments in poor countries. The argument this paper supports is that social welfare may eventually be diminished if forced social responsibility is imposed. The case of providing subsidized AIDS medication to less developed (...)

The potential impact of social accountability certification on marketing: A short note. [REVIEW]Morgan P. Miles & Linda S. Munilla - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 50 (1):1-11.
Social Responsibility (SA) 8000 registration/certification is a response by the business community to address consumer and investor perceptions of the importance of emerging global social issues such as child labor, worker rights, discrimination, compensation, etc. As more U.S. and European firms outsource production to less developed nations, social, environmental, and reputational issues have become more important. SA8000 is a series of behavioral standards that represents a comprehensive, and potentially global, corporate social responsibility registration system that provides a standard of socially (...)

The modern history of experimentation with human beings is notable for its ethical lacunae. In 1865, in his great work, An Introduction to the Study of Experimental Medicine, Dr. Claude Bernard, the French physician who first established the use of the scientific method in medicine, echoed the earlier injunctions of physician-moralist Moses Maimonides in counseling his fellow physicians not to treat their patients solely as a means of advancing knowledge. Yet such cautions had no apparent effect on the physicians who, (...)

Robust Processing Advantage for Binomial Phrases with Variant Conjunctions.Suphasiree Chantavarin, Emily Morgan & Fernanda Ferreira - 2022 - Cognitive Science 46 (9):e13187.
Prior research has shown that various types of conventional multiword chunks are processed faster than matched novel strings, but it is unclear whether this processing advantage extends to variant multiword chunks that are less formulaic. To determine whether the processing advantage of multiword chunks accommodates variations in the canonical phrasal template, we examined the robustness of the processing advantage (i.e., predictability) of binomial phrases with non‐canonical conjunctions (e.g.,salt and also pepper; salt as well as pepper). Results from the cloze study (...)

These subtle and carefully reasoned essays explore the dilemmas of the post-modern Jew who would take history seriously without losing the commanding presence Israel heard at Sinai.... Consciousness and Action: Does Cognitive Science Support (Mild) Epiphenomenalism?Morgan Wallhagen - 2007 - British Journal for the Philosophy of Science 58 (3):539-561.
Questions about the function of consciousness have long been central to discussions of consciousness in philosophy and psychology. Intuitively, consciousness has an important role to play in the control of many everyday behaviors. However, this view has recently come under attack. In particular, it is becoming increasingly common for scientists and philosophers to argue that a significant body of data emerging from cognitive science shows that conscious states are not involved in the control of behavior. According to these theorists, nonconscious (...)

  48. Why Do Women Leave Philosophy? Surveying Students at the Introductory Level.Morgan Thompson, Toni Adleberg, Sam Sims & Eddy Nahmias - 2016 - Philosophers' Imprint 16.
Although recent research suggests that women are underrepresented in philosophy after initial philosophy courses, there have been relatively few empirical investigations into the factors that lead to this early drop-off in women’s representation. In this paper, we present the results of empirical investigations at a large American public university that explore various factors contributing to women’s underrepresentation in philosophy at the undergraduate level. We administered climate surveys to hundreds of students completing their Introduction to Philosophy course and examined differences in (...)

The Work Gratitude Scale: Development and Evaluation of a Multidimensional Measure.Carolyn M. Youssef-Morgan, Llewellyn E. van Zyl & Barbara L. Ahrens - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
This study explores gratitude as a multidimensional and work-specific construct. Utilizing a sample of 625 employees from a variety of positions in a medium-sized school district in the United States, we developed and evaluated a new measure, namely the Work Gratitude Scale, which encompasses recognized conative, cognitive, affective, and social aspects of gratitude. A systematic, six-phased approach through structural equation modeling was used to explore and confirm the factorial structure, internal consistency, measurement invariance, concurrent, convergent, and discriminant validity of the (...)
