    The Semiotic Spectrum.Gabriel Greenberg - 2011 - Dissertation,
Because humans cannot know one another’s minds directly, every form of communication is a solution to the same basic problem: how can privately held information be made publicly accessible through manipulations of the physical environment? Language is by far the best studied response to this challenge. But there are a diversity of non-linguistic strategies for representation with external signs as well, from facial expressions and fog horns to chronological graphs and architectural renderings. The general thesis of this dissertation is that (...)

The Role of MNEs in Community Development Initiatives in Developing Countries.Gabriel Eweje - 2006 - Business and Society 45 (2):93-129.
Multinational enterprises (MNEs) have long had a reputation of not doing enough for their host communities in developing countries. This study critically examines the role of MNEs in community development initiatives in developing countries, using the Nigeria oil industry and the South African mining industry as case study. Specifically, the study assessed the usefulness of MNE-supported community development projects as a means of demonstrating corporate social responsibility. The findings suggest that expectations for community development projects are greater in developing countries. (...)

Poverty of stimulus arguments concerning language and folk psychology.Gabriel Segal - unknown
This paper is principally devoted to comparing and contrasting poverty of stimulus arguments for innate cognitive apparatus in relation to language and in relation to folk psychology. These days one is no longer allowed to use the term ‘innate’ without saying what one means by it. So I will begin by saying what I mean by ‘innate’. Sections 2 and 3 will discuss language and theory of mind, respectively. Along the way, I will also briefly discuss other arguments for innate (...)

If You are Serious About Impact, Create a Personal Impact Development Plan.Kelly P. Gabriel & Herman Aguinis - 2022 - Business and Society 61 (4):818-826.
To achieve impact, academics need to create personal impact development plans, focused on what and on whom to have an impact and the necessary competencies to do so. Profession and university leaders play a critical role in the successful implementation of such plans.

Apologizing for Socrates: How Plato and Xenophon Created Our Socrates.Gabriel Danzig - 2010 - Lexington Books.
Apologizing for Socrates places some of the Platonic and Xenophontic writings in the context of contemporary controversies over Socrates, providing a perspective in which many of the philosophic and literary features of the text can be explained. In addition, it sheds light on the apologetic techniques used by Plato and Xenophon.

    ‘I Can't Breathe’: The Suffocating Nature of Racism.Gabriel O. Apata - 2020 - Theory, Culture and Society 37 (7-8):241-254.
The death of George Floyd in May 2020 sparked an unprecedented global wave of protests that appeared to mark a turning point in the battle against racial injustice. But protests against racism are not new; each comes and soon passes into the archives of history, leaving few lasting changes in its wake. What was different about the death of Floyd was that the graphic manner of its unfolding was captured on film: the slow act of wilful suffocation, and how the (...)

Oil and Water Do Not Mix, or: Aliud Est Credere, Aliud Deponere.Amadeus Gabriel, David Howden & Philipp Bagus - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 128 (1):197-206.
The financial crisis has led to new interest in the ethics of financial markets. In this article, we further the debate on the nature of banking contracts by showing that the fundamental subjective purposes of loan and deposit contracts are irreconcilable. Any resultant mixture of the two contracts is a legal aberration. We consider a mutual fund as an important and legitimate alternative to the common demand deposit to provide high liquidity and some yield without offering full availability of a (...)

It is shown how frege's problematic connection between truth-Value and "bedeutung" (of a sentence) becomes more plausible when set against the background of german language and philosophy, Especially by comparing frege's position with the value-Theoretical school of neo-Kantianism (w windelband).

    Erkenntnis.Gottfried Gabriel - 2015 - Boston: De Gruyter.
The study aims at expanding the idea of knowledge beyond the notion of descriptive knowledge. It examines a pluralism of scientific, philosophical, literary, and aesthetic forms of knowledge. This pluralism is not relativistic but complementary. Different ways of knowing enrich each other thus facilitating a more comprehensive and differentiated conception of the world.".

The Burden of Antidevelopment in Sub-Saharan Africa.Gabriel Tumba Hassan - 2021 - Journal of Catholic Social Thought 18 (2):241-268.
Despite the universal similarities of antidevelopment problems, the problems in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are unique, intense, and multifaceted. They oscillate from incompetent and corrupt government plagued with violent conflict, to the lack of provision for social needs, to ethno-religious bigotry, and result in the lack of conditions and expanded opportunities for people to pursue their well-being. Though these problems have links to the colonial era, I argue, using qualitative and historical approach methods, that the bulk of them are with postcolonial (...)

Justifying Deviant Behavior: The Role of Attributions and Moral Emotions.Yiannis Gabriel, Deanna Geddes & Dirk Lindebaum - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 141 (4):779-795.
We present two studies investigating the impact of causal perceptions and the moral emotions of anger, shame, and guilt on the justification of deviant workplace behavior. Study 1 tests our conceptual framework using a sample of undergraduate business students; Study 2 examines a population of practicing physicians. Results varied significantly between the two samples, suggesting that individual and contextual factors play an important role in shaping the perceptual and emotional processes by which individuals form reactions to undesirable affective workplace events. Explanation, understanding and determinism in Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology.Gabriel Peters - 2014 - History of the Human Sciences 27 (1):124-149.
This article locates Bourdieu’s sociology within the lasting controversy concerning the nature of causal explanation and interpretative understanding in the social sciences, with a special focus on the classical problem surrounding the alleged compatibility between these procedures. First, it is argued that Bourdieu’s praxeological and relational perspective on the social universe leads him not only to join the ‘compatibility field’ of the debate, but to sustain, more radically, the identity between explanation and understanding. Second, the article defends the view that (...)

    Weakly minimal groups with a new predicate.Gabriel Conant & Michael C. Laskowski - 2020 - Journal of Mathematical Logic 20 (2):2050011.
Fix a weakly minimal (i.e. superstable U-rank 1) structure M. Let M∗ be an expansion by constants for an elementary substructure, and let A be an arbitrary subset of the universe M. We show that all formulas in the expansion (M∗,A) are equivalent to bounded formulas, and so (M,A) is stable (or NIP) if and only if the M-induced structure AM on A is stable (or NIP). We then restrict to the case that M is a pure abelian group with (...)

  34. Frege, Lotze, and the Continental Roots of Early Analytic Philosophy.Gottfried Gabriel - 2002 - In Edited by Erich H. Reck (ed.), From Frege to Wittgenstein: Perspectives on Early Analytic Philosophy. New York, US: Oup Usa.
In recent years, it has been acknowledged increasingly that the relationship between analytic and continental philosophy is one of complementarity rather than opposition, as previously often assumed. In this essay I will argue that, in fact, early analytic philosophy has its roots in the tradition of continental philosophy. The essay will focus on Hermann Lotze's influence on Frege and on Frege's relationship to the Neo‐Kantians Otto Liebmann and Wilhelm Windelband. It will provide new evidence for the claim that Frege's philosophy (...)

Therapists’ Experience of Working with Suicidal Clients.Gabriel Rossouw, Elizabeth Smythe & Peter Greener - 2011 - Indo-Pacific Journal of Phenomenology 11 (1):1-12.
This paper is based on a study of therapists’ experiences of working with suicidal clients. Using a hermeneutic-phenomenological methodology informed by Heidegger, the study provides an understanding of the meaning of therapists’ experiences from their perspective as mental health professionals in New Zealand. In this regard, the findings of the study identified three themes: Therapists’ reaction of shock upon learning of the suicide of their client; Therapists’ experience of assessing suicidal clients as a burden; and finally, Therapists’ professional and personal (...)

A Man in Purgatory: Towards an Historical Phenomenology of Place.Gabriel Byng - 2021 - Environment, Space, Place 13 (1):1-36.
Abstract:Scholars have long been interested in how people experienced places in the past, often relying for their evidence either on modern engagements with surviving landscapes, buildings and objects, or on contemporary descriptions of the ritualised or required activities that took place in and around them. This article argues that both approaches risk eliminating the subjectivity of historical agents and, thus, the ground of experience itself, assuming an unjustifiable uniformity either among historical persons or between historical persons and modern scholars. Historians (...)
