The Problems of Band: An Inquiry into the Future of Instrumental Music Education.Randall Everett Allsup & Cathy Benedict - 2008 - Philosophy of Music Education Review 16 (2):156-173.
This article examines the educational function of the North American wind band program. Issues such as band education's methodological control, perceived lack of self-reflection or inquiry, its insecurity concerning program legitimacy, and the systemic fear that seems to permeate its history provide the framework for this exploration. With a philosophical eye toward the future of school-based instrumental music education each author brings perspective to the task of critiquing an institution that has taken on the seemingly sacrosanct and inviolable trappings of (...)

Duty and 'Euthanasia': the Nurses of Meseritz-Obrawalde.Susan Benedict, Arthur Caplan & Traute Lafrenz Page - 2007 - Nursing Ethics 14 (6):781-794.
This article examines the actions and testimonies of 14 nurses who killed psychiatric patients at the state hospital of Meseritz-Obrawalde in the Nazi 'euthanasia' program. The nurses provided various reasons for their decisions to participate in the killings. An ethical analysis of the testimonies demonstrates that a belief in the relief of suffering, the notion that the patients would 'benefit' from death, their selection by physicians for the 'treatment' of 'euthanasia', and a perceived duty to obey unquestioningly the orders of (...)

A Revised Consent Model for the Transplantation of Face and Upper Limbs: Covenant Consent.James L. Benedict - 2017 - Springer Verlag.
This book supports the emerging field of vascularized composite allotransplantation for face and upper-limb transplants by providing a revised, ethically appropriate consent model which takes into account what is actually required of facial and upper extremity transplant recipients. In place of consent as permission-giving, waiver, or autonomous authorization, this book imagines consent as an ongoing mutual commitment, i.e. as covenant consent. The covenant consent model highlights the need for a durable personal relationship between the patient/subject and the care provider/researcher. Such (...)

The Oxford Handbook of Social Justice in Music Education.Cathy Benedict, Patrick K. Schmidt, Gary Spruce & Paul Woodford - 2015 - Oxford University Press USA.
Music education has historically had a tense relationship with social justice. One the one hand, educators concerned with music practices have long preoccupied themselves with ideas of open participation and the potentially transformative capacity that musical interaction fosters. On the other hand, they have often done so while promoting and privileging a particular set of musical practices, traditions, and forms of musical knowledge, which has in turn alienated and even excluded many children from music education opportunities. The Oxford Handbook of (...)

Naming Our Reality: Negotiating and Creating Meaning in the Margin.Cathy Benedict - 2007 - Philosophy of Music Education Review 15 (1):23-36.
This paper explores the ways in which music educators have allowed others outside of music education to name who and how they are in the world. Often comfortable with voicing advocacy and purpose from the status of second class citizen, music educators are complicit in the very processes of reproduction they wish to challenge. Seeking to address what could be a privileged positioning of marginalized status, this paper also speaks to the spaces that are created that could afford possibilities of (...)

Capitalist Rationality: Comparing the Lure of the Infinite.Cathy Benedict - 2013 - Philosophy of Music Education Review 21 (1):8-22.
With the use of Bruner’s concept of story, broad generalizations from the US, and political philosophy, this article suggests that comparisons between music programs throughout the world are meaningless unless we acknowledge how pervasive, insidious, and menacing is the rhetoric of the global market economy. Political philosophy is one process of inquiry that can provide a way of reflecting upon educative constructs that affect all educators. One way to begin thinking about the process of comparison is to examine educational statements (...)

Jeff Benedict has seen both good and bad in his career as a journalist. Some of the best are the extraordinary people he has met who have made deliberate choices to live happier lives despite the extreme hardship that each of them have faced. Although life will knock us down from time to time, this book is an important reminder that we all can make a choice to get back up, brush ourselves off, and keep pressing forward. Replace anger with (...)

Make It Plain: Strengthening the Ethical Foundation of First-Person Authorization for Organ Donation.James L. Benedict - 2017 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 28 (4):303-307.
One response to the chronic shortage of organs for transplant in the United States has been the passage of laws establishing first-person authorization for donation of organs, providing legal grounds for the retrieval of organs and tissues from registered donors, even over the objections of their next of kin. The ethical justification for first-person authorization is that it is a matter of respecting the donor’s wishes. The objection of some next of kin may be that the donor would not have (...)

On the correspondence of semiclassical and quantum phases in cyclic evolutions.M. G. Benedict & W. Schleich - 1993 - Foundations of Physics 23 (3):389-397.
Based on the exactly solvable case of a harmonic oscillator, we show that the direct correspondence between the Bohr-Sommerfeld phase of semiclassical quantum mechanics and the topological phase of Aharonov and Anandan is restricted to the case of a coherent state. For other Gaussian wave packets the geometric quantum phase strongly depends on the amount of squeezing.

Among the most widely known of the various groups of Plain Anabaptists are the Amish and the Old Order Mennonites.
