Accanimento terapeutico, biotecnologico, clonazione, DNA, eutanasia... Termini ormai entrati a far parte del linguaggio comune vengono definiti in modo chiaro e sintetico da una voce autorevole in materia. L'ABC della bioetica per chi vuole comprendere, in chiave cristiana, le problematiche poste dalla medicina e dalla scienza, cogliendo gli aspetti più complessi e dibattuti.

This essay responds to Jeffrey Perl’s introduction to a long-term project of Common Knowledge titled “Xenophilia: Symposium on Xenophobia’s Contrary.” Responding to a cue from Perl, Albera undertakes an archaeology of the intellectual tools that produced the unstable antinomy of the terms xenophilia and xenophobia. Despite the appearance of antiquity conferred by the Greek roots of both terms, they are the product of a fairly recent and quintessentially modern dynamic. They integrate tacit assumptions of a modern nationalist posture that produces (...) fixed identities and categorizations. Instead of this compromised pair of terms, Albera offers philoxenia, with its distinct genealogy, as it delimits a reciprocal commitment to hospitality, which is pragmatic and relatively unproblematic, rather than a demand for love or an expectation of loathing. The concept of xenophilia presupposes an abstract category—the xenos—that it regards as anterior to, and independent of, any concrete determinations, while philoxenia understands the xenos to be a quite specific individual. Philoxenia, moreover, does not subscribe to the identity principle: the alien, in the relationship known as philoxenia, is not conceived as differing radically from oneself or even as being self-identical or coherent. And finally, while the xenophile’s feelings tend to oscillate between supposedly coherent cultural positions, philoxenia is characterized by ambiguity, which produces none of the symptoms engendered by the ambivalence of xenophilia. This essay discusses how international political theory can become more receptive towards Islamism. The central claim is that Islamism can be interpreted as a form of communitarianism. To underpin this claim, the study relies on an analysis of how the concepts of community and person are conceived in communitarianism and Islamism. On the basis of the affinities of these conceptions between Islamism and communitarianism the essay shows that Islamism can be interpreted as a form of communitarianism. The study then concludes (...) that understanding Islamism as communitarianism produces a common space for public reasoning which would deserve more consideration from political theorists. Secondly Islamism as communitarianism reassesses the possibility of a political theory engagement with Islamist theory that can benefit the recognition of human rights norms in circumstances in which Islamism is particularly influential. This study reports an analysis using the conversation analytical approach of the use of laughter within a corpus of cognitive therapy sessions. The results relating to eight first encounter sessions reveal that a client’s laughter may accompany disagreement as well as agreement with the therapist. In both cases, the therapist does not reciprocate the client’s laughter and replies by investigating the client in question’s condition, and this approach to the client’s laughter produces significant results in therapeutic work. This article focuses (...) on the asymmetry that characterizes the roles of the psychotherapist and the client in psychotherapy sessions and, in particular, on the part that laughter plays in this type of scenario. This paper presents and discusses a novel approach to indeterministic belief revision. An indeterministic belief revision operator assumes that, when an agent is confronted with a new piece of information, it can revise its belief sets in more than one way. We define a rational agent not only in terms of what it believes but also of what it desires and wants to achieve. Hence, we propose that the agent’s goals play a role in the choice of (possibly) one of (...) the several available revision options. Properties of the new belief revision mechanism are also investigated. (shrink)

In this paper we consider the relation between beliefs and goals in agent theory. Beliefs play three roles in reasoning about goals: they play a role in the generation of unconditional desires from conditional ones, they play a role in adoption of desires as goals, and they play a role in the selection of plans to achieve goals. In this paper we consider the role of goals in reasoning about beliefs. Though we assume that goals do not play a role (...) in the belief generation problem, we argue that they play a role in the belief selection problem. We show the rationality of the use of goals in belief selection, in the sense that there are cases in which agents that take their goals into account in selecting a belief set from a set of alternatives outperform agents that do not do so. We also formally distinguish between the rational role of goals in belief selection and irrational wishful thinking. (shrink)

Con questa ricerca vorremmo soffermarci su quattro punti che riteniamo fondamentali per la comprensione dell'influenza delle fonti neoplatoniche nella Firenze del Quattrocento. Il punto di partenza è l'analisi dei rapporti tra i due massimi esponenti del neoplatonismo fiorentino: Pico della Mirandola e Marsilio Ficino, autori fondamentali non solo per le loro interpretazioni, ma anche per aver riscoperto e tradotto, dopo secoli di silenzio, i tesori del pensiero greco. Non si comprenderebbe l'influenza delle fonti neoplatoniche antiche nel Quattrocento senza rendere conto (...) del confronto – spesso molto aspro – tra i due protagonisti pricipali della riscoperta rinascimentale di Platone e di tutta la tradizione neoplatonica. Il secondo punto affronta un'importante interpretazione in senso tomista dell'opera di Pico, quella di Giovanni di Napoli, che aiuta ad intendere tanto le differenze tra il mirandolano e Ficino, quanto ad introdurre all'influenza importantissima dello Pseudo-Dionigi in tutto il dibattito filosofico del tardo Quattrocento. Il terzo punto cerca di affrontare un tema fondamentale: l'esigenza di definire e organizzare nuovi ordini del sapere. Dal recupero del passato emergevano nuove contraddizioni e nuove esigenze, non si trattava affatto di una semplice imitazione dell'antico, ma al contrario, significava farlo rivivere in nuove forme e costruire nuovi sistemi dei saperi capaci di rispondere alle esigenze culturali e politiche che stavano alla base della nascita del moderno. L'ultimo punto riguarda invece un'analisi specifica tra il pensiero di Giovanni Pico e lo Pseudo-Dionigi, discorso che ovviamente comporta anche l'analisi di altre fonti fondamentali, in particolare Damascio. This essay strives to illustrate the unusual philosophical category of exaiphnēs (“sudden ; instant”) which is testified in Damascius’ De principiis ; Damascius is the last diadochus of Neoplatonic Academy. It will be illustrated how Damascius takes up a rare idea contained in Plato’s Parmenides on the sudden, rigorously adjusting this notion to describe the irreducible transcendence of the ineffable principle with respect to the One, just like the sudden bursts into time without belonging to it. It will therefore be (...) shown how this specificity of exaiphnēs appears to be taken up and enhanced in a Christological key about the Incarnation by Dionysius ps.‑Areopagite, turning somehow the theoretical reflection of the contemporary pagan philosopher Damascius into a Christian one. "'Tutta la nostra vita è un esercizio alla visione dell'Uno' : affrontando il pròblema per eccellenza della tradizione neoplatonica, il rapporto tra Unità e Molteplicità, il testo tenta di rinvenire il ligamen essenziale che muove le riflessioni di tre grandi pensatori della tarda antichità, cioè Plotino, Proclo e Dionigi Areopagita; questo, all'interno di una prospettiva teoretica, critica ed ermeneutica che tiene conto anche dei guadagni filosofici conseguiti da Hegel, Gentile e Severino, e dalla poesia pensante di Dante. Nello sforzo (...) di cogliere lo Stesso che si agita nelle differenze di cui si costituisce il mondo, si offre, nel corso dell'analisi, una disamina dei principali nodi aporetici che una metafisica henologica evoca: Uno e Tutto, Infinito e finito, processione e conversione, Eternità e tempo, immagine e linguaggio, Immediato e mediato. In particolare, il filo rosso che guida queste specificazioni è rintracciato nell'inesausta dialettica tra Pensiero ed Essere, da cui e in cui, in grazia di una 'magia che tutto produce', l'ignoranza umana si apre all'Altro-non-Altro, rendendosi divina"--. In primo luogo l'A. distingue fra autoevidenza, autoriflessività e introspezione. Esamina poi il tema dell'auto-riflessività in Platone, Aristotele, Plotino e Proclo. Nell'ultima parte dello studio illustra il tema nel pensiero di Agostino - distinguendo l'auto-riflessività dall'argomento si fallor sum - nello Pseudo Dionigi - soffermandosi sul commento dell'Aquinate al passaggio del De divinis nominibus sul movimento circolare dell'anima - e infine nella versione latina del Liber de causis.

Il lavoro consiste in una particolare rilettura del testo cusaniano, nella quale si cerca di evidenziare, tra le altre fonti, soprattutto la presenza di Meister Eckhart. La “discesa” nel fondo dell'anima è presentata come il culmine teoretico di quel cammino di visione a cui e-duca l'aegnima dell'icona. Per queste ragioni l'articolo punta sull'influsso della mistica speculativa in campo teoretico e di quella dottrina che M. Eckhart chiama “Generazione del Logos nell'anima”. Tale trattazione apre poi il senso dell'ampia sezione dedicata alla (...) filosofia negativa e ai “nomi divini” del Deus Trinitas, stavolta sulla scia di Dionigi: Infinito, Non-Aliud e Padre. Centrale è la figura del Cristo, unica vera condizione di possibilità della visione “di” Dio in quanto unico mediatore tra il finito e l'infinito; in Cristo si realizza quella paradossale unione delle due nature ed offre così all'umanità la chiave tanto desiderata per avvicinare l'Infinito.
