Von stoischem Verhalten spricht man, wenn ein Mensch sich nicht durch seine Lebensumstände oder durch Schicksalsschläge aus dem Gleichgewicht bringen lässt. Die Philosophenschule der Stoa wurde von Zenon etwa um das Jahr 310 in Athen gegründet. Die ethische Hauptforderung heißt: in Übereinstimmung mit der menschlichen Natur zu leben. Dabei ist für den Stoiker nur die Tugend ein Gut und nur die Schlechtigkeit ein echtes Übel. Alles andere, z. B. der Besitz materieller, äußerer Dinge oder der Verlust geliebter Menschen, sind für (...) einen Weisen kein Grund, vom steten Weg zu Ausgeglichenheit und Glückseligkeit abzuweichen. Nach annähernd sechzig Jahren gibt es endlich wieder eine neue große Stoiker-Ausgabe. Das zweibändige Werk, übersetzt und kommentiert von Rainer Nickel, ist nicht nur für Philosophen ein echtes Desiderat. Über Seneca oder Marc Aurel wirken die Gedanken dieser Philosophenschule bis in unsere Tage. Überraschend aktuell und modern wirken beispielsweise die Ratschläge, in allem das rechte Maß zu wahren oder in Übereinstimmung mit der Natur zu leben - ein philosophischer Weg zur seelischen Gesundheit. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Begründer der Stoa, Zenon, Kleanthes, Persaios, Sphairos, Dionysios von Herakleia, Ariston, Herillos, Chrysippos sowie Panaitios und Poseidonios. Gewirkt habe sie in der Zeit zwischen dem 4. und dem 1. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Wichtige Vermittler stoischen Gedankengutes waren Cicero, Seneca und Marc Aurel. (shrink)

Nach dem Vorbild Platons fasste Cicero den Plan, seiner Schrift "De re publica" eine Abhandlung ber die Gesetze folgen zu lassen. Der Dialog "De legibus" wird von Marcus Cicero, Atticus und Quintus Cicero, dem Bruder des Politikers, in heiter-entspannter Atmosph re auf seinem Landgut in Arpinum gef hrt. Es handelt sich um drei B cher ber rechtsphilosophische Grundfragen, die in einer kommentierenden Darstellung der Sakralgesetzgebung und des Zivilrechts veranschaulicht werden. Die 52/52 v. Chr. entstandene Schrift beweist Ciceros F higkeit, ein (...) schwieriges und auf den ersten Blick spr des Thema faszinierend darzustellen. Das gilt auch f r die "Paradoxa Stoicorum", die Cicero Anfang 46 v. Chr. verfasst und seinem Freund Brutus gewidmet hat. Mit Hilfe geschichtlicher und biographischer Beispiele ist es dem Autor gelungen, seine Leser auf anregende Weise f r die Dogmen der stoischen Ethik zu interessieren. (shrink)

Als Gegner der Politik Caesars ausgeschlossen vom politischen Tagesgeschaft, schreibt Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 43 v. Chr.) sich selbst und seinem Freund Atticus zum Trost diese beiden Dialoge uber Alter (Cato maior de senectute) und Freundschaft (Laelius de amicitia). Er legt die Gedanken, die ihn selbst bewegen, in den Mund bewunderter Personlichkeiten Roms. Die Texte gelten als Hohepunkte seines philosophischen Gesamtwerks nicht zuletzt ihrer vollendeten Sprache wegen.".

Diese Ausgabe des berühmten ciceronischen Werkes, das Dilthey eines der größten Kunstwerke in Prosa nannte, will dem Leser die Bedeutung und Selbständigkeit des Staatsdenkens Ciceros zugänglich machen. In einer Zeit, die Fragen des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens ein besonderes Interesse entgegenbringt, ist es nicht unwesentlich, sich ein Denken gegenwärtig zu halten, das menschliche Existenz ganz im Gemeinwesen des Staats begründet sieht. Die drei Bücher 'Vom pflichtgemässen Handeln' beschäftigen sich mit dem Verhältnis zwischen dem Sittlichen (honestum) und dem Nützlichen (utile). Cicero vertritt die These, dass beide Begriffe von Natur aus identisch sind. Einen Konflikt zwischen ihnen kann es daher im Grunde nicht geben. Was immer sich auf den ersten Blick als Konfliktfall darstellen mag, erweist sich bei genauerer Betrachtung stets als scheinbarer Konflikt. Cicero verfasste 'De officiis' als Vermächtnis an seinen Sohn in den Monaten nach der Ermordung Caesars.

Rainer Forst develops a critical theory capable of deciphering the deficits and potentials inherent in contemporary political reality. This calls for a perspective which is immanent to social and political practices and at the same time transcends them. Forst regards society as a whole as an ‘order of justification’ comprising complexes of different norms referring to institutions and corresponding practices of justification. The task of a ‘critique of relations of justification’, therefore, is to analyse such legitimations with regard to (...) their validity and genesis and to explore the social and political asymmetries leading to inequalities in the ‘justification power’ which enables persons or groups to contest given justifications and to create new ones. Starting from the concept of justification as a basic social practice, Forst develops a theory of political and social justice, human rights and democracy, as well as of power and of critique itself. In so doing, he engages in a critique of a number of contemporary approaches in political philosophy and critical theory. Jennifer Lackey’s case “Creationist Teacher,” in which students acquire knowledge of evolutionary theory from a teacher who does not herself believe the theory, has been discussed widely as a counterexample to so-called transmission theories of testimonial knowledge and justification. The case purports to show that a speaker need not herself have knowledge or justification in order to enable listeners to acquire knowledge or justification from her assertion. The original case has been criticized on the ground that it does not really (...) refute the transmission theory, because there is still somebody in a chain of testifiers—the person from whom the creationist teacher acquired what she testifies—who knows the truth of the testified statements. In this paper, we provide a kind of pattern for generating counterexample cases, one that avoids objections discussed by Peter Graham and others in relation to such cases. (shrink)

Because modern societies are built on elaborate divisions of cognitive labor, individuals remain laypersons in most knowledge domains. Hence, they have to rely on others' expertise when deciding on many science-related issues in private and public life. Even children already locate and discern expertise in the minds of others. This study examines how far university students accurately judge experts' pertinence for science topics even when they lack proficient knowledge of the domain. Participants judged the pertinence of experts from diverse disciplines (...) based on the experts' assumed contributions to texts adapted from original articles from Science and Nature. Subjective pertinence judgments were calibrated by comparing them with bibliometrics of the original articles. Furthermore, participants' general science knowledge was controlled. Results showed that participants made well-calibrated pertinence judgments regardless of their level of general science knowledge. (shrink)

This paper explores the role of moral uncertainty in explaining the morally disruptive character of new technologies. We argue that existing accounts of technomoral change do not fully explain its disruptiveness. This explanatory gap can be bridged by examining the epistemic dimensions of technomoral change, focusing on moral uncertainty and inquiry. To develop this account, we examine three historical cases: the introduction of the early pregnancy test, the contraception pill, and brain death. The resulting account highlights what we call “differential (...) disruption” and provides a resource for fields such as technology assessment, ethics of technology, and responsible innovation. Interactive social cognition theory and approaches of developmental psychology widely agree that central aspects of emotional and social experience arise in the unfolding of processes of embodied social interaction. Bi-directional dynamical couplings of bodily displays such as facial expressions, gestures, and vocalizations have repeatedly been described in terms of coordination, synchrony, mimesis, or attunement. In this paper, I propose conceptualizing such dynamics rather as processes of affective resonance. Starting from the immediate phenomenal experience of being immersed in interaction, I develop (...) the philosophical notion of affective resonance to refer to a dynamic entanglement of moving and being-moved in relation. The concept of affective resonance makes visible that the interaction dynamic itself creates an affective experience rather than transmitting internal feeling states between pre-existent individuals. This leads to a philosophical framework in which relationality and ontogeny are primary over separate individuals, and in which the naturalistic distinction of a fundamental physical level versus an emerging level of social processes has to be given up. This paper develops a philosophical account of moral disruption. According to Robert Baker (2013), moral disruption is a process in which technological innovations undermine established moral norms without clearly leading to a new set of norms. Here I analyze this process in terms of moral uncertainty, formulating a philosophical account with two variants. On the Harm Account, such uncertainty is always harmful because it blocks our knowledge of our own and others’ moral obligations. On the Qualified Harm Account, there is (...) no harm in cases where moral uncertainty is related to innovation that is “for the best” in historical perspective, or where uncertainty is the expression of a deliberative virtue. The two accounts are compared by applying them to Baker’s historical case of the introduction of mechanical ventilation and organ transplantation technologies, as well as the present-day case of mass data practices in the health domain. English summary: Gilduin (1155) was, from 1113, the first abbot of the community of the Canons Regular of St Augustine, soon to become an abbey, under the auspices of St Victor of Marseille, on the left bank of the river Seine. After the death of his confrere Hugh, who was of German descent and the leading figure of the Victorines, on 11 February 1141, abbot Gilduin took care that the writings of Hugh were collected and compiled in a representative complete (...) edition. This 'Gilduin-edition' - as it is called in Medieval scholarship - comprises four volumes, the first of which is reconstructed herewith and presented in print. This volume follows the 2008 edition of Hugh's theological summa, De sacramentis christiane fidei. Then as now we are dealing with a critical albeit historical text. This new volume contains nine works, among which the first ever complete edition of Hugh's Cronica surely stands out. German description: Gilduin (+ 1155) war ab 1113 der erste Abt der einige Jahre zuvor gegrundeten und bald zur Abtei erhobenen Gemeinschaft von Augustinerchorherren unter dem Patronat des hl. Victor von Marseille, auf dem linken Ufer der Seine. Nach dem Tode seines Mitbruders Hugo, des aus Deutschland stammenden fuhrenden Kopfes der Viktoriner, am 11. Februar 1141 hat Abt Gilduin dafur gesorgt, daa die Schriften Hugos gesammelt und in einer reprasentativen Gesamtausgabe zusammengestellt werden. In Culture, Politics, and Governing, the study of contemporary ascetics provided me with a way to approach the practice of knowledge production and its intersection with cultural production that was able to take into account the institutionalization of authors and artists and the ways in which their practices were both governed and governing, often through valorization. Recently, I have worked to extend this framework to settings that are less obvious as sites for the production of governing knowledge: what Max Weber (...) and Foucault discussed as ascetics, generated through what Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno called the culture industry. The contemporary culture industry produces an art of living genre that encourages pecuniary subjects who treat the self as a site for the production of value from which to practice valorized ascetics. In this chapter, we consider ethical and philosophical aspects of trust in the practice of medicine. We focus on trust within the patient-physician relationship, trust and professionalism, and trust in Western (allopathic) institutions of medicine and medical research. Philosophical approaches to trust contain important insights into medicine as an ethical and social practice. In what follows we explain several philosophical approaches and discuss their strengths and weaknesses in this context. We also highlight some relevant empirical work in the section on (...) trust in the institutions of medicine. It is hoped that the approaches discussed here can be extended to nursing and other topics in the philosophy of medicine. (shrink)

Data analytics and data-driven approaches in Machine Learning are now among the most hailed computing technologies in many industrial domains. One major application is predictive analytics, which is used to predict sensitive attributes, future behavior, or cost, risk and utility functions associated with target groups or individuals based on large sets of behavioral and usage data. This paper stresses the severe ethical and data protection implications of predictive analytics if it is used to predict sensitive information about single individuals or (...) treat individuals differently based on the data many unrelated individuals provided. To tackle these concerns in an applied ethics, first, the paper introduces the concept of “predictive privacy” to formulate an ethical principle protecting individuals and groups against differential treatment based on Machine Learning and Big Data analytics. Secondly, it analyses the typical data processing cycle of predictive systems to provide a step-by-step discussion of ethical implications, locating occurrences of predictive privacy violations. Thirdly, the paper sheds light on what is qualitatively new in the way predictive analytics challenges ethical principles such as human dignity and the (liberal) notion of individual privacy. These new challenges arise when predictive systems transform statistical inferences, which provide knowledge about the cohort of training data donors, into individual predictions, thereby crossing what I call the “prediction gap”. Finally, the paper summarizes that data protection in the age of predictive analytics is a collective matter as we face situations where an individual’s (or group’s) privacy is violated using dataotherindividuals provide about themselves, possibly even anonymously. Rule systems are used every day to share experience, pre-existing knowledge, beliefs and ethical rules, and to provide instructions for future action. This article expands and builds upon an approach pioneered by Julius M. Moravcsik to argue that ethics cannot be completely codified into a rigid set of rules, because any such set lacks a misapplication-correcting sensibility. Thus, an ethics that is transferred purely by means of a rule-set is incomplete and thus cannot be used reliably to guide future action. (...) The balancing sensibility is formed out of pre-existing expert knowledge and takes account of the limitations of rule-sets in specific contexts. Moravcsik’s approach is then expanded by incorporating it into a holistic framework for the analysis, guidance and development of actions to be taken to support the emergence, selection and implementation of solutions for a sustainable future. This approach has profound implications for managers and organisers in new or critical situations. (shrink)
