    The Family Idiot. Gustave Flaubert, 1821-1857. [REVIEW]William L. McBride - 1983 - Review of Metaphysics 37 (2):417-418.
Hazel Barnes's study, published simultaneously with volume One of the English translation of Sartre's The Family Idiot and designed to bear considerable resemblance to it in physical appearance, deals with the latter work in its entirety. It is to Barnes's translation of Being and Nothingness that an entire generation of Anglophone philosophers has turned, and she has long been regarded as a leading expert on Sartre's thought. The present book will strengthen that reputation.

It is, of course, a great service on the part of the University of Chicago Press to have undertaken the task of publishing Sartre's last and longest major theoretical work. This first volume in English consists of part One and hence corresponds to about 60% of the first of the three volumes of the French original, which is more than 2800 pages in length altogether. The English-language edition is to appear in five volumes; the magnitude of the enterprise is obvious.

As an attempt to formulate epistemological boundaries , for which Gustave Flaubert becomes a test-case, L'Idiot de la famille can be seen simultaneously as the exemplification of a method and as a re-assertion and further development of Sartre's theory of subjectivity. This article proposes to approach the issue of Sartre's notion of human subjectivity in L'Idiot from the particular angle of the idea of “destiny.” It will be argued that the term “ destin ” provides a focal point (...)

This chapter presents Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and Samuel Beckett’s Trilogy as modern fictions with ancient-skeptical ambitions. Whether in the affective domain (Flaubert) or in the cognitive (Beckett), the aim is to help the reader achieve a position of studied neutrality—ataraxia, époché—thanks not to an a priori decision but to the mutual cancellation of opposing tendencies. Understanding Flaubert and Beckett in this way allows us, first, to enrich our sense of what “catharsis” may involve; second, to (...)

    'The devil's dilemma in Flaubert' saint Antony.Dale Jacquette - 1998 - Heythrop Journal 39 (2):140–147.
In La Téntation de Saint Antoine Gustave Flaubert dramatizes a philosophical exchange about the nature of divine providence and the efficacy of petitionary prayer. The Devil and Antony consider the question of whether God can be called upon for relief from suffering. The Saint assumes as popular religion teaches that it is possible to ask for God's help in emergency situations, while the Devil poses a dilemma to challenge Antony's faith. The Devil seeks to expose contradictions in some (...)

It is argued here that cognitive science currently neglects an important source of insight into the human mind: the effects created by magicians. Over the centuries, magicians have learned how to perform acts that are perceived as defying the laws of nature, and that induce a strong sense of wonder. This article argues that the time has come to examine the scientific bases behind such phenomena, and to create a science of magic linked to relevant areas of cognitive science. Concrete (...)

Melanoma in the shopping mall: A utilitarian argument for offering unsolicited medical opinions in informal settings.Gustav Preller & Sabine Salloch - 2018 - Bioethics 32 (3):193-198.
Doctors occasionally make diagnoses in strangers outside of formal medical settings by using the medical skill of visual inspection, such as noticing signs of melanoma or the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. This may cause considerable moral unease and doubts on the side of the diagnosing physician. Such encounters force physicians to consider whether or not to intervene by introducing themselves to the stranger and offering an unsolicited medical opinion despite the absence of a formal doctor-patient relationship. A small body of literature (...)

Images of Savages: Ancient Roots of Modern Prejudice in Western Culture.Gustav Jahoda - 1998 - Routledge.
In _Images of Savages,_ the distinguished psychologist Gustav Jahoda advances the provocative thesis that racism and the perpetual alienation of a racialized 'other' are a central leagacy of the Western tradition. Finding the roots of these demonizations deep in the myth and traditions of classical antiquity, he examines how the monstrous humanoid creatures of ancient myth and the fabulous "wild men" of the medieval European woods shaped early modern explorers' interpretations of the New World they encountered. Drawing on a global (...)

The purpose of this document is to consider possible industrial policy measures that could be contemplated by the South African Government to provide support for the export competitiveness of the country’s processed fruit products. It follows an earlier analysis by Don Ross, which argued for the conclusion that the industry meets key criteria for economically justifiable industrial policy assistance. That is, it offers a premium product that can be amplified in value by brand strengthening, can be positioned more advantageously than (...)

Low-carbon food supply: the ecological geography of Cuban urban agriculture and agroecological theory.Gustav Cederlöf - 2016 - Agriculture and Human Values 33 (4):771-784.
Urban agriculture in Cuba is often promoted as an example of how agroecological farming can overcome the need for oil-derived inputs in food production. This article examines the geographical implications of Cuba’s low-carbon urban farming based on fieldwork in five organopónicos in Pinar del Río. The article charts how energy flows, biophysical relations, and socially mediated ecological processes are spatially organised to enable large-scale urban agricultural production. To explain this production system, the literature on Cuban agroecology postulates a model of (...)
