Few educators and philosophers of education have discussed how to challenge the curse of bad faith that Sartre describes as central to human existence. This essay suggests that in pointing out that “consciousness is a being such that in its being, its being is in question in so far as its being implies a being other than itself” Sartre has suggested that questioning is ontologically primary and that by radical questioning a person can challenge bad faith. This book philosophically discusses the educational challenges of dwelling poetically, which, according to Martin Heidegger, means learning from great poems how to live a worthy life and relate authentically to beings and to Being. The gifts of great poetry are carefully described and concrete approaches are presented that the educator can adopt.

RÉSUMÉ: Plusieurs pensent qu’on devrait comprendre la personne qui fait le mal plutôt que la condamner. Le présent article suggère que les écrits de Sartre seraient en désaccord avec une telle approche. Lorsqu’on combat le mal, selon ce qu’indiquent ces écrits, il n’y a aucun besoin, si l’on sait qu’une personne fait le mal, d’essayer de la comprendre. La distinction de Sartre entre comprendre une personne et savoir quelque chose est présentée en détail, à partir surtout de ses écrits de (...) fiction et de sa biographie de Gustave Flaubert. En exploitant cette distinction, on arrive à la conclusion qu’il est superflu d’essayer de comprendre la personne qui fait le mal. This paper suggests that one of the reasons for the lack of understanding of what is happening in the Gaza Strip is our current understanding of truth. This understanding of truth, which has prevailed for 2500 years, holds that truth is the accordance of a statement with facts. Together with our recording some of the abuses of human rights in the Gaza Strip, which have all but been ignored, the paper suggests that Martin Heidegger’s understanding of truth as “aletheia,” as (...) unconcealment, may lead to a better knowledge of what is truly occurring in the Gaza Strip.
