Si loin que l’on puisse mener la description des comportements religieux des humains, l’analyse des comment et leurs attitudes ne répond pas toujours à la question du pourquoi. C’est dans ce double contexte pluraliste que se pose la question du juste sens à donner au concept de religion. Car l’expérience quotidienne des médias, comme de la lecture d’ouvrages philosophiques, apologétiques, théologiques et autres, révèle que des mots comme religion, divin, sacré, sont lestés de sens multiples et souvent contradictoires. Il paraît (...) donc indispensable de préciser les notions que nous utilisons dans l’analyse du fait religieux, et de prendre en compte le lieu où se situe le discours : histoire, sociologie, philosophie, théologie. Car plus les voies sont multiples pour appréhender le religieux, plus il faut préciser les mots et la chose : toutes exigences auxquelles se soumet Michel Meslin.As far back as we can take the description of the religious behavior of human beings, the analysis of the how and their attitudes does not always answer the question of why. It is in this twofold context that the question arises of the exact meaning to be given to the concept of religion. The daily experience of the media, as well as the reading of philosophical, apologetic, theological, and others works, reveal that words like religion, divine, and sacred, are weighed down by multiple and often contradictory meanings. La question du phénomène précède de beaucoup la phénoménologie, elle s'ouvre avec la philosophie et l'accompagne tout au long de son histoire. Mais ce préalable incontournable - car être veut dire apparaître - est surdéterminé par une présupposition irréfléchie. De la Grèce à Heidegger, dans les problématiques classiques de la conscience et de la représentation, dans leurs critiques, dans la phénoménologie de l'intentionnalité et dans ses prolongements, "phénomène" désigne ce qui se montre à l'intérieur d'un horizon de visihilisation, l'Ek-stase d'un (...) A part of the “return to religion” now evident in European philosophy, this book represents the culmination of the career of a leading phenomenological thinker whose earlier works trace a trajectory from Marx through a genealogy of psychoanalysis that interprets Descartes’s “I think, I am” as “I feel myself thinking, I am.” In this book, Henry does not ask whether Christianity is “true” or “false.” Rather, what is in question here is what Christianity considers as truth, what kind of truth (...) it offers to people, what it endeavors to communicate to them, not as a theoretical and indifferent truth, but as the essential truth that by some mysterious affinity is suitable for them, to the point that it alone is capable of ensuring them salvation. In the process, Henry inevitably argues against the concept of truth that dominates modern thought and determines, in its multiple implications, the world in which we live. Henry argues that Christ undoes “the truth of the world,” that He is an access to the infinity of self-love, to a radical subjectivity that admits no outside, to the immanence of affective life found beyond the despair fatally attached to all objectifying thought. The Kingdom of God accomplishes itself in the here and now through the love of Christ in what Henry calls “the auto-affection of Life.” In this condition, he argues, all problems of lack, ambivalence, and false projection are resolved. 1.1. The two postulates of special relativity and the tension between them. When Einstein first presented what came to be known as special relativity, he based the theory on two postulates or principles, called the “relativity postulate” or “relativity principle” and the “light postulate.” Both postulates are supported by a wealth of experimental evidence. The combination of the two, however, appears to lead to contradictions. To avoid such contradictions, Einstein argued, we need to change some of our fundamental ideas about (...) space and time. Einstein formulated the relativity postulate as follows: “The same laws of electrodynamics and optics will be valid for all frames of reference for which the equations of mechanics hold good” (Einstein 1905r, 891). Such frames of reference are called inertial frames and an observer at rest in one of them is called an inertial observer. A few examples will suffice to understand both the concept of an inertial frame and the meaning of the relativity postulate. First consider a plane which starts out sitting on the tarmac, proceeds to fly through clear skies, and eventually hits turbulence. All the while a passenger is nursing a cup of coffee. Sipping coffee without spilling is easy during the smooth portion of the flight. This is because the laws governing the behavior of the coffee in the frame of reference of the plane flying at constant velocity are the same as in the frame of reference of the airport.1 In fact, these same laws hold in any frame moving uniformly (i.e., with constant velocity) with respect to the frame of the airport. Drinking coffee without spilling when the plane ride gets bumpy is much harder. The laws for the coffee in noninertial frames, such as the frame of a plane encountering turbulence, are more complicated than in inertial frames. As a second example consider a cruise ship that sets out from its port of origin, sails smoothly on a calm sea, and eventually is caught in a storm. All the while two passengers engage in a drawn-out tennis match on the ship’s upper deck.. (shrink)

Espoirs déçus : à l'ère de la post-génomique, les secrets du vivant sont maintenant recherchés dans les théories de la complexité, dans la convergence des efforts des biologistes, des physiciens et des mathématiciens. Comment comprendre la signification de cette succession rapide d'objectifs apparemment différents, de cette alternance d'espoirs et de désillusions? Dans ce livre (...) novateur, Michel Morange propose une clé pour rendre compte de ces difficultés, et de beaucoup d'autres analogues touchant toutes les branches de la biologie. Les annonces sensationnelles reflètent l'espoir toujours déçu qu'une explication unique pourrait suffire. Or les faits biologiques - comme ceux relevant de bien d'autres disciplines scientifiques -ne peuvent être expliqués par un principe d'intelligibilité unique. Exemples à l'appui et de façon très pédagogique, Michel Morange montre pourquoi des explications différentes doivent être articulées pour décrire le fonctionnement des macromolécules aussi bien que l'évolution humaine ou le développement des cancers. Admettre une idée aussi simple n'est pas évident, car tout scientifique a été formé à privilégier un principe d'intelligibilité particulier. L'articulation entre explications différentes est pourtant indispensable pour le progrès des connaissances ; elle est aussi une exigence éthique ; elle est requise pour que la science conserve sa place dans nos sociétés. The two major options on which the current debate on the interpretation of quantum mechanics relies, namely realism and empiricism, are far from being exhaustive. There is at least one more position available, which is metaphysically as agnostic as empiricism, but which shares with realism a committment to considering the structure of theories as highly significant. The latter position has been named transcendentalism after Kant. In this paper, a generalized version of Kant's method is used. This chapter presents the perceptual reality monitoring theory of consciousness (PRM). PRM is a higher-order theory of consciousness. It holds that consciousness involves monitoring the reliability of one’s own sensory signals. I explain how a perceptual reality monitoring mechanism computes the higher order representations that are crucial for consciousness. While PRM accounts for the difference between conscious and unconscious states, it does not explain, on its own, why experiences feel the way they do—the phenomenal character of experience. PRM is compatible (...) with multiple theories of phenomenal character. Here, I show how to combine it with ‘Mental Quality Space’ theory. I finish by presenting empirical evidence for PRM, as well as some of its predictions. (shrink)

This book’s basic argument is that the Freudian unconscious, far from constituting a radical break with the philosophy of consciousness, is merely the latest exemplar in a heritage of philosophical misunderstanding of the Cartesian cogito that interprets “I think, therefore I am” as “I represent myself, therefore I am” (in the classic interpretation of Heidegger, one of the targets of the book).

Newton's use of mathematics in mechanics was justified by him from his neo-platonician conception of the physical world that was going along with his «absolute, true and mathematical concepts» such as space, time, motion, force, etc. But physics, afterwards, although it was based on newtonian dynamics, meant differently the legitimacy of being mathematized, and this difference can be seen already in the works of eighteenth century «Geometers» such as Euler, Clairaut and d'Alembert (and later on Lagrange, Laplace and others). Despite (...) their inheritance of Newton's achievements, they understood differently the meaning and use of mathematical quantities for physics, in a way that was more neutral to metaphysics. The continental reception and assimilation of Newton's Principia had indeed occured as its budding onto Leibniz' calculus and a cartesian conception of rationality (spread in particular by the malebranchist disciples of Leibniz). This new thought of the legitimacy of mathematization is clearly at variance with Descartes' identification of physics with geometry, but it nevertheless can be traced back to Descartes' conception of magnitudes, as it was developed and analyzed from the notion of dimension in his Regulæ ad directionem ingenii (in particular, rule 14). This idea can be followed afterwards with further philosophical or mathematical specifications through authors such as Kant, Riemann and others. This inquiry into the original thought of magnitudes, and of physical magnitudes conceived through mathematization, leads us to suggest an extension of meaning for the concept of physical magnitude that puts emphasis on its relational and structural aspects rather than restraining it to a simple «numerically valued» acception. Such a broadening would have immediate implications on our comprehension of «non classical» aspects of contemporary physics in the quantum area and in dynamical systems. (shrink)

In 1907, Einstein set out to fully relativize all motion, no matter whether uniform or accelerated. After five failed attempts between 1907 and 1918, he finally threw in the towel around 1920, setting himself a new goal. For the rest of his life he searched for a classical field theory unifying gravity and electromagnetism. As he struggled to relativize motion, Einstein had to readjust both his approach and his objectives at almost every step along the way; he got himself hopelessly (...) confused at times; he fooled himself with fallacious arguments and sloppy calculations; and he committed what he later allegedly called the biggest blunder of his career: he introduced the cosmological constant. There is a very uplifting moral to this somber tale. Although Einstein never reached his original destination, the harvest of his thirteen-year odyssey is quite impressive. First of all, what is left of absolute motion in general relativity is far more palatable than absolute motion in special relativity or Newtonian theory. And general relativity does seem to eliminate absolute space. More importantly, from a modern physics point of view, Einstein produced a spectacular new theory of gravity based on what he called the equivalence principle. This principle says that inertial and gravitational effects are due to one and the same structure, the inertio-gravitational field, which in Einstein’s theory is represented by a metric tensor field. In addition to laying the foundations of this theory, Einstein, among other things, launched relativistic cosmology, suggested the possibility of gravitational waves, gave the first sensible definition of a space-time singularity, and caught on to the intimate connection between general covariance and energy-momentum conservation, an example of the general connection between symmetries and conservation laws of Noether’s theorems. These results more than make up for the—at least by the standards of modern philosophy of science—rather opportunistic way in which they were obtained.. (shrink)

Willard van Orman Quine (1908-2000), philosophe et logicien américain, a conduit la philosophie analytique à sa première révolution conceptuelle en critiquant l'empirisme logique du Cercle de Vienne et de son maître Carnap en particulier. En débarrassant cet empirisme des «deux dogmes» indéfendables qui le soutiennent, Quine l'ébranle en profondeur : la signification des énoncés ayant trait au monde s'avère largement indéterminée, le savoir comme tel perd ses fondements et l'on court le risque d'un scepticisme dangereux. Pour saisir comment une connaissance (...) solide du monde peut pourtant se monnayer en des théories verbalisées partageables, Quine réinvente le réalisme. Il veut construire, par des voies radicalement nouvelles et contre-intuitives, un empirisme «sans les dogmes» qui s'inscrive toutefois dans le champ logico-linguistique qu'il est en train de bouleverser. Ce sont les thèses centrales de son oeuvre et les polémiques dont elles furent l'objet que le présent ouvrage expose : l'indétermination de la traduction, l'inscrutabilité de la référence, le holisme sémantique, la relativité de l'ontologie, la naturalisation de l'épistémologie. La philosophie dite postanalytique et notamment ses déploiements néopragmatistes trouvent dans cette oeuvre leur date de naissance et leurs racines. Quine, dont les thèses paradoxales ont dérouté la philosophie analytique, est une figure dominante de cette tradition qui est au coeur de l'actualité philosophique contemporaine. (shrink)

L'anarchisme a ses dévots incapables de penser sans le secours du catéchisme fabriqué par l'historiographie dominante du militantisme. Si l'on veut l'envisager en dehors des clous, il faut moins croire la légende que découvrir l'histoire de ce formidable mouvement dans l'histoire. Afin de construire l'anarchie dans les actes et lui donner son actualité, allons au-delà du catéchisme à l'aide d'une théorie contemporaine: le postanarchisme. Cette expression recouvre toute pensée qui conserve un certain nombre des idéaux de l'anarchisme classique, mais les (...) dépasse au profit d'une pensée libertaire contemporaine. Chacun connaît le géant Gulliver et personne n'ignore l'existence des lilliputiens. Si le géant peut être immobilisé au sol, ça n'est pas par le pouvoir macrologique d'un seul, mais par la multiplication micrologique des petits liens. L'addition de petites forces constitue une formidable puissance politique libertaire. Je nomme cette logique "Principe de Gulliver". La révolution ne se fera plus par le haut, dans la violence, avec le sang et la terreur, imposée par le bras armé d'une avant-garde sans foi ni loi, mais par le bas, de façon immanente, contractuelle, pragmatique, pacifique. L'ouvrage s'ouvre sur un "Autoportrait au drapeau noir" qui est une autobiographie sous le signe de l'anarchisme. (shrink)

Tocqueville passe pour le penseur de la démocratie et de la liberté dans un monde qui n'aime ni la démocratie ni la liberté. En fait, à le lire vraiment, on découvre qu'il fut assez peu démocrate et très peu défenseur de la liberté : en effet, ce philosophe justifie le massacre des Indiens d'Amérique, la société d'apartheid entre Noirs et Blancs, la violence coloniale en Algérie, le coup de feu contre les ouvriers quarante-huitards qui demandent du travail et du pain (...) pour leur famille. Il ne faut pas s'étonner que ce libéral de gauche ait pu servir sous Mitterrand à justifier la conversion du socialisme au libéralisme en 1983 et, sous couvert de droit d'ingérence, les guerres néocoloniales initiées dès 1990. Si l'on est Blanc, catholique, Européen, propriétaire, Tocqueville est le penseur ad hoc. Sinon, l'auteur de La démocratie en Amérique ne craint pas de justifier et de légitimer ce que l'on nomme aujourd'hui ethnocide ou crime de guerre."--Page 4 of cover. (shrink)

Il fut aussi et surtout un individu grossier, égoïste, agressif, ironique, cynique, malpoli, menteur, escroc, insultant, arrogant, suffisant, prétentieux et, bien sûr, content de lui, vivant de reprocher aux autres leur mauvais goût, leur inélégance, leur fatuité, leur manque d'éducation. Ce personnage réel, recouvert par son mythe et sa légende, fut l'étoile brillante de la société mondaine anglaise pendant une vingtaine d'années, avant d'être, pendant un quart de siècle, sur le sol français, un (...) pitoyable personnage, un raté minable, un pique-assiette mal élevé, un misanthrope syphilitique, un gâteux, puis un demi-fou enfermé à l'asile. Comment un homme si détestable a-t-il pu devenir le personnage conceptuel du dandysme pensé comme une éthique de l'élégance et de l'aristocratie, du bon goût et de la singularité? De quelle manière cet adulte, qui ne fut jamais qu'un gamin mal élevé, est-il devenu l'incarnation du poète de l'existence? Par la grâce d'un autre dandy, Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, qui publie Du dandysme ou de George Brummell, et de Charles Baudelaire. Brummell fut un déchet; Barbey en fit un astre noir; Baudelaire, un feu latent qui pouvait rayonner, mais ne voulut pas... Le dandy a-t-il encore des choses à nous dire en ces temps nihilistes? In this paper, we investigate the constitutive problems and other several aspects of what a research entitled 'formal epistemology' should be. The interest in this subject has to do with the possibility of reaching a privileged point of view or axis of research – i.e., the 'formal' one – that would allow a better grasp of the richness and variety of the facts and problems tackled by precise (local) epistemology of theories (for example, in physics). This approach is likely to (...) enable one to hold the main structural lines that organize those theories according to a more comprehensive, unifying and synthetic intelligibility. By the same token, it would eventually allow a better handling of the changes required in the organization of knowledge, putting emphasis on its main directions, drawing up a rational inventory of this knowledge, and perhaps anticipating others. At first, we deal with the 'thought of changes' that no approach of the 'form' can afford to leave aside, since the meaning of this concept is inseparable from the contents that come with constructions and modifications. We examine then the notion of 'epistemic operation' as an instrument to create new forms on the theoretical as well as on the meta-theoretical levels. In the wake of it, we analyze the characteristics of the form and of the formal, as well as their relationship with the contents of knowledge. We also take the notion of object into account, since it depends upon the decision of a subject and upon conventional choices. We finally inquire about the link between 'epistemic operations' as specified above and algorithmic functions for knowledge statements, and emphasize the risk of reductionism that might follow from a naturalistic conception of representation. This article develops two figures of the social imagination: the stereotype and the emblem. To start with we explore the notion of social imagination, principally from Emile Durkheim, Gaston Bachelard and Maurine Godelier. Secondly, the article deepens the two notions of stereotypes and emblems supported by the works of the historian Bronislaw Baczko and the anthropologist Michael Herzfeld’s. Throughout the paper, the theoretical aims are illustrated with reference to coal-mining memory and heritage in the north of France.  .
