The paper discusses the psychoanalytical notion of sublimation from the perspective of Freud’s the Unheimliche , which is nothing but a structure of contradictory signification without synthesis. The Unheimlich is responsible, in Lacan’s phrase, for the elevation “of any given object to the dignity a thing ( Ding )”. But such a process could also be the occasion for the glancing at the indignity of a thing.

Examines the impact of both Bertrand Russell and John Dewey's philosophical influences on Chinese intellectuals during their visit in the 1920s. Also features biographical information on Russell and Dewey, important speeches and correspondences between Russell, Dewey, and Chinese scholars, a list of Russell and Dewey's works, and the timelines of Russell and Dewey's visits to China.

This research tried to make a contribution to the discussion around the conditions, under which the ontological shift of the philosophical hermeneutics can be done. It began with an analysis of Gadamer's well-known formula: " Being that can be understood is language. (Sein, das verstanden werden kann, ist Sprache.)". Scholars interpret it differently. By means of the grammatical analysis, I showed on the one hand an interpretation of the formula from the perspective of pan‐lingualism as absurd, because they regard Being (...) and language as identical. On the other hand, an interpretation from the perspective of the linguistic ontology should be eliminated, according to which the being possesses a linguistic character, so that its unconcealment can complete itself without the effort ofunderstanding. The two interpretations come from a misunderstanding that they regard the subordinate clause of that formula as descriptive relative clause. There is still another interpretive problem, if we regard the subordinate clause as restrictive relative clause and thus interpret Gadamer's theory as linguistic idealism. However Gadamer indicates that such an interpretation remains on the level of German idealism, because it limits understanding to an intellectual grasping. Another reading of the subordinate clause as restrictive relative clause is appropriate, because it takes understanding as a practical ability (Können) into its consideration and at the same time emphasizes the non-identity between Being and language despite their ontological inseparableness. Gadamer finds out a linguistic theory, in order to support such kind of reading. He extends his principle of aesthetic non-differentiation to the range of language. By means of thislinguistic non-differentiation, the ontological shift of the hermeneutics can complete itself. (shrink)

In this essay, we address the influence of psychoanalysis on Merleau-Ponty's philosophy of the esthesiological body. Our analyses are about the relation of senses and meanings established among the notions of game, sport and ludic, dialoguing with esthesiology and with the pulsional body, based on Freud's psychoanalytic referential, also approached by Merleau-Ponty. Our interlocutor considers that the expression of play in language seeks to situate the body, perception, and desire as primordial sources in the process of signification, presenting a different (...) way of conceiving the problem of ambiguity of the word game, based on a lacunar, indirect, and nascent conception of language. Merleau-Ponty's philosophy beckons to an alternative and possible path in the movement of re-reading the game and the ludic, including the dialogue with Psychoanalysis concerning the relations of the pulsional body with the game and the play in shaping the feeling of existence, and broadening the horizons of the philosophy of sport. Freud relates to the notion of beyond-the-man through a double movement, if we consider the direct satisfaction of the Triebe in contrast to the possibility of refining the targets of the drives. On the one hand, the analyst accepts the idea of Nietzsche that sublimation is precisely the means by which occurs the refinement of the targets of the impulses, but simultaneously reaffirms Schopenhauer's idea that suffering is the background of all life, has the constant voltage of the drive is (...) precisely the phenomenon that strains us and propels us forward: it is the difference between the actual pleasure obtained by satisfaction with the expected pleasure that comes the factor that drives. This does not allow the body to park in any of the previously established forms of satisfaction, but instead will cause this organism in their psychic context, claim a state of profound satisfaction, which is, however, hampered by the force of resistances that the process of repression still keeps active and by the difficulties inherent in human interaction and conflict between desires and capabilities. Since the 2010s, popular YouTube channels have used derogatory humour at the expense of gendered and racialised others. Founded upon the perception of an influx of ‘wokeness’ in comedy, these videos mock the mythologised ‘unfunny, angry SJW’ and teach the audience to laugh at enemies of the alt-right. Although empirical research has analysed the algorithmic radicalisation of viewers, few have addressed the role of cultural discourses in disseminating alt-right ideology through online media. Here, the right-wing ‘pipeline’ is understood as a (...) tool of radicalisation that weaponises laughter as a tool of regulations and oppression. This paper analyzes the production of derogatory laughter by studying a network of North American content creators including Russell Peters, Lilly Singh, Jordan Peterson, Steven Crowder, and Matt Walsh, using critical tools from psychoanalysis, social psychology, and critical humour studies. Contrary to the alt-right rhetoric that ‘edgy’ humour is harmless, this paper posits derogatory humour as a tool of marginalisation and domination that reinforces white supremacist and cisnormative patriarchal value systems. This paper investigates the cultural significance of black holes and suns as metaphors in continental European literature and art, drawing on theoretical insights from French continental authors such as Jean-François Lyotard and Ray Brassier. Lyotard suggests that black holes signify the ultimate form of the sublime, representing the displacement of humanity and our unease with our place in the cosmos. On the other hand, Brassier views black holes as a consequence of the entropic dissolution of matter, reflecting physical reality's indifference (...) to subjective or teleological significance. The study also presents a curated collection of literary works and artworks that employ black holes and suns as metaphors, examining the emergence of these metaphorical objects and identifying discursive and epistemological shifts in society. Furthermore, this collaborative research project, involving the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and the Federal Fluminense University in Brazil, and the Charles University in Prague in the Czech Republic, aims to provide a valuable resource for further academic inquiry. No intuito de dilucidar o "simbólico", "linguagem" e "ética" revelam-se instâncias incontornáveis na articulação entre filosofia e psicanálise, pelo que o autor do presente artigo recorre essencialmente aos escritos de Jacques Lacan em ordem à prossecução desse fim. Assumindo a obra de Lacan na sua condição de controversa, inovadora e dissidente, o artigo analisa até que ponto a proclamação lacaniana de um "retorno a Freud" equacionou de um modo novo o acesso ao simbólico e à questão da linguagem, nomeadamente graças (...) a uma análise estrutural em que o inconsciente -"estruturado como uma linguagem" -, pressupõe uma analítica clínica em novos moldes, pela relevância da "retórica do inconsciente ", cujo "jogo de verdade" se processa não só por um manifesto não-cartesianismo, mas ao modo da "ek-sistência " heideggeriana. Mais ainda, o processo, longe de pressupor um sujeito único, mostra que a situação do desejo é insuperável - há apenas verdade parcial. A analítica da condição humana acaba por postular, na senda de Aristóteles e Kant, mais do que uma relação entre "ética e psicanálise", uma verdadeira "ética da psicanálise", de cariz quasikantiano. O artigo mostra ainda, finalmente, até que ponto numa conjugação entre ética e estética a consideração do bem acaba por carecer de um refluxo no discurso do belo. /// With the intention of elucidating the "symbolic" in the articulation between philosophy and psychoanalysis, "language" and "ethics" constitute necessarily complicit instances. To this end, the present article resorts to the writings of Jacques Lacan, writings known to be controversial, innovative, and dissident. The article seeks to analyze the extent to which the call to "return to Freud" provides a new way of approaching the symbolic and the question of language. This is due to the employment of structural analysis and the subsequent finding that the unconscious is "structured as a language." This presupposes a clinical analysis that brings to light the "rhetoric of the unconscious ", of which its "game of truth " proceeds in a manner that is not only non-Cartesian but also reflects the Heideggerian idea of ek-sistentia. In addition, not presupposing an unique subject, the theory demonstrates that the problematic of desire cannot be overcome and that truth is only partial. Following Aristotle and Kant, the article ojfers an analysis of how the human condition postulates an "ethics of psychoanalysis.". (shrink)

ABSTRACT This text intends to rethink the dispute of feminist epistemologies regarding the conception of gender discursive constructions from the background of Freud and Lacan’s thesis. Our basis is Butler’s critique of binary feminist theories regarding the substantialization of the sexual body: if the sexual body is constructed by discourse, it is also a subversive element of discourse, since it cannot be completely determined by cultural gender binarism. We use excerpts from the debate between Butler-Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis as a (...) “model case” where such epistemological questions could be analyzed: at first, psychoanalysis is one of the main critical targets of the feminist “second wave”; secondly, psychoanalysis would also have been mobilized in favor of the binary feminist cause; however, for Butler, such feminists would not have sufficiently criticized psychoanalysis, for not attacking the essentialized sexual bodily root that would sustain the binary division between sexes; finally, Butler emphasizes the critical potential that psychoanalysis holds, given the subversive and plastic resistance of the unconscious, drive, desire and body, central notions for non-binary feminist epistemology and remodeling of discursive constructivism. In psychoanalytical terms, this sort of refusal amounts to the impossibility of thinking psychoanalysis as an hermeneutics of the reception of sense . On the other hand, Freud’s own considerations (...) concerning the economy of the psychic apparatus seems to offer a non-metaphysical alternative, an hermeneutics of the impossibility of interpretation and of the boundaries of sense that gives the analyst privileged access to some other kind of sense. The phenomenonof ``Unheimlichkeit'' – uncanniness and unhomelikeness– is demonstrated not only to play a key role in thetheories of Freud and Heidegger, but also toconstitute the essence of the experience of illness.Two different modes of unhomelikeness – ``The minduncanny'' and ``The world uncanny'' – are in thisconnection explored as constitutive parts of thephenomenon of illness. Resumo: Este artigo tem por objetivo apontar uma relação entre a estética e a ética em Sartre, mostrando que a constituição ética do indivíduo não se distingue da sua constituição estética. Primeiramente, parte-se da crítica que Merle faz em seu artigo à psicanálise existencial e se evidencia como o encontro com a história e a postulação de uma teoria da personalização nas obras biográficas destituem tais críticas. Num segundo momento, legitimam-se as postulações anteriores, apontando-se como na obra Saint Genet Sartre (...) ratifica a constituição do gosto sobre a moral pelo processo de personalização. Por fim, será visto que toda ética tem um pressuposto transgressor, na medida em que o sujeito ético é também sujeito estético.: This article aims to point out a relation between aesthetics and ethics in Sartre, showing that the ethical constitution of the individual does not distinguish from his or her aesthetic constitution. First, we start from Merle’s criticism of existential psychoanalysis, and we show how such criticisms can be dismissed on the basis of the encounter with history and the postulation of a theory of personalization in biographical works. Second, we point out how Sartre, in his Saint Genet, ratifies the constitution of a taste regarding the moral by the process of personalization. Finally, we will see that all ethics have a transgressive presupposition insofar as the ethical subject is also an aesthetic subject. (shrink)

A partir de uma meta-análise filosófica, procura-se explicitar as intenções não aparentes de Freud com sua análise do termo Unheimliche. Determinadas particularidades da abordagem freudiana são observadas desvendando relações estéticas na construção de sentido do espírito próprio da psicanálise. Was in Theorien an Auflösungsvermögen verkraftet werden kann und muß, findet in der Welt, die durch Theorie rekonstruiert werden soll, eine Parallele: Was der Mensch sei, ist nicht einmal menschen- und lebensweltlich eine klare Kante. In den Humankatastrophen der letzten hundert Jahre wird er zu einer verfeuerungsfähigen Biomasse. Man kann kaum den Eindruck gewinnen, daß sich daran etwas wirklich geändert hat. Es wird Tag für Tag hekatombenweise gestorben, gemordet, gefoltert. Der Mensch wird definiert als das Wesen, das man töten kann (...) durch Hunger, Krankheit, Folter, Mord und Krieg, namenlos, zahllos, heute hier, morgen dort. Man könnte sich denken, daß die Lehre vom Menschen, die Anthropologie, ihren Grund verliert und eigentlich zur Thanatologie konvertieren müßte. Und dank Gentechnologie erscheint am Horizont die Vision, der Mensch sei nicht mehr jemand, der nach dem Bilde eines Gottes geformt sei, sondern nunmehr jemand, der in den Stand versetzt wurde, sich ein machbares Bild von sich selber zu schaffen, die Exemplare der humanen Population so zu formatieren, daß sie dem alten Ideal der Kalokagathia entsprechen: tugendhaft, schön, alters- und behinderungslos, krankheits-, rausch- und drogenfrei, angemessenen Verstandes eine Idee der Devianzausmerzung, könnte man sagen, die Idee einer leid- und schicksalsfreien Ruhewelt, einer Re-Animation des Paradiesgedankens ohne Adam und ohne Eva. Clanak raspravlja o odnosu izmedju paradigmatskog statusa filma i upotrebe filmskih analogija u psihoanalitickom diskursu filozofije Slavoja Zizeka koji cini temelj njegovog kritickog diskursa o drustvu i kulturi uopce. U prvom dijelu, polazeci od novijih rasprava medju nekolicinom engleskih i americkih sveucilisnih intelektualaca o kontroverznim vidovima djelovanja Slavoja Zizeka u akademskoj zajednici i na siroj javnoj sceni, u prvom dijelu clanka prikazuju se neki usporedni primjeri i unutrasnji pokretaci kontroverzije sadrzaj-forma u filozofiji i pop-kulturi te Zizekovo razumijevanje te kontroverzije. U (...) drugom dijelu raspravlja se o Zizekovim sporadicnim refleksijama o meta-egzemplifikaciji i obrazlaze teza da kod Zizeka, na pretpostavkama ontologije virtualnog, presutno djeluje dvostruka, paradigmatska i analogijska, koncepcija inherencije u odnosu primjera i principa te zamjena analogije predmet? analogijom analiz?, sto stvara tipican konflikt izmedju metonimijske i metaforicke evazivnosti diskursa. Na toj pozadini vrednuje se ponovo opci prigovor protiv Zizeka o?virtualnom totalitarizmu? lisenom kontingencije smisla i ukazuje na mjesto subjekta izvan diskursa kao druge osnove za analizu uvjeta istinitosti. U trecem dijelu ispituje se i metodoloski vrednuje Zizekovo vlastito razumijevanje njegovog postupka filmske ilustracije i njegovo osebujno performativno razrjesenje epistemoloskog problema filmske interpretacije kroz montazu imaginarne identifikacije ili?empatije? s filmskim objektima, koje s?m naziva?perverzijom? ili?ljubavlju?. U cetvrtom dijelu analizira se ocigledni nesrazmjer izmedju Zizekove primjene doktrinarnih zaliha psihoanalize u kritici kinematografije, s jedne strane, i njegove teorijski oskudno razradjene apoteoze?kinematickog materijalizma?. Argumentira se da taj nerazmjer donosi u rezultatu ono sto Zizek odbija u nacelu: supstituciju materijalizma analize i kontingencije uvjeta u potrazi za istinskom holistickom koncepcijom smisla, sto, u konzekvenciji, izokrece psihoanaliticki diskurs o kinematografiji u hermeneuticki. Este artículo regresa al clásico texto de Freud Das Unheimliche para tratar de exhibir la dimensión productiva y la perspectiva de futuro que le son inherentes. Para ello, se visitan las propuestas del artista Mike Kelley y del filósofo Giorgio Agamben que tratan de ilustrar plásticamente las características de esta noción. Se examinan, a continuación, las tesis freudianas sobre el manejo de los significantes en un marco de angustia unheimlich, esto es, de pérdida súbita de las referencias habituales. Se termina (...) defendiendo que es la apuesta de vanguardia del futurismo, de la que el texto de Freud sería epitafio, la que mejor permite exhibir la importancia crucial del término Unheimliche para la ontología psicoanalítica. O trabalho visa uma leitura da teoria da sublimidade na Crítica da razão prática, a partir da análise das passagens nas quais, em particular na conclusão da obra e no terceiro capítulo da Analítica da razão prática pura, Kant oferece respaldo textual para destacarmos certa distância teórica com relação à concepção estética do sublime sucessivamente apresentada na Crítica da faculdade do juízo, notadamente na formulação geral do §23. Para isso, e tendo como plano de fundo uma perspectiva contrastiva de interpretações (...) que aproximam segunda e terceira Críticas quanto ao sublime, sugerimos que, nessas duas obras, há variações referentes tanto à dinâmica envolvida pelo sublime quanto ao seu objeto de referência, assim como no que tange à caracterização dos sentimentos de admiração e respeito mediante os quais, segundo Kant, o sublime se expressa.
