Nous nous proposons essentiellement dans cette communication de poser le problème des rapports logiques et historiques entre méthode positive et méthode cartésienne, et, surtout, d’en faire apparaître l’importance « actuelle » pour la philosophie des sciences.Une telle enquête nous semble utile pour préciser le sens que revêt le mot «positif » dans la Méthodologie contemporaine, parce que la filiation historique et logique du positivisme au cartésianisme offre un exemple caractéristique de brutale discontinuité apparente, de profonde continuité réelle entre deux formes (...) « positivistes » de la philosophie des sciences.En précisant, à partir de ses racines cartésiennes, le mouvement méthodologique de Comte, et la signification réelle de son échec apparent, on élargit assez sensiblement le concept traditionnel de philosophie positive et on ouvre, par là même, aux revendications irrésistibles de l’épistémologie contemporaine, une issue plus fructueuse. Es un tópico de la sociología discutir sobre la paternidad intelectual de la disciplina sociológica. Aunque genéricamente se asocia la sociología a la Modernidad, tópicamente se reconoce que Comte acuñó el término en 1824 en sustitución del concepto de física social que él mismo, no obstante, siguió utilizando hasta la Lección XLVII del Cours, aparecida en 1839. Pero ha sido otro francés, Emile Durkheim, quien, al vindicar el socialismo de Saint-Simon, acaba haciéndole responsable de «la idea de extender a las (...) ciencias sociales el método de las ciencias positivas, de donde surgió la sociología, y el método histórico, auxiliar indispensable de la sociología». Por nuestra parte, atribuimos a Comte con toda justicia el establecimiento de los nexos circulares pertinentes entre sociología y ciencia, de modo que su teoría de la ciencia puede considerarse sin escrúpulo como la primera formulación de un auténtica sociología de la ciencia ―como ha visto Pierre Ducassé con sagacidad. Mostraré los dos argumentos básicos que hacen de la sociología de Comte un primer conato de hacer sociología de la ciencia, antes de pasar a discutir ―como argumento de refuerzo― las diferencias entre la sociología de Comte y la de Saint-Simon, y sus nexos con la ideología de Desttut de Tracy. In Kant and the Demands of Self-Consciousness, Pierre Keller examines Kant's theory of self-consciousness and argues that it succeeds in explaining how both subjective and objective experience are possible. Previous interpretations of Kant's theory have held that he treats all self-consciousness as knowledge of objective states of affairs, and also that self-consciousness can be interpreted as knowledge of personal identity. By developing this striking new interpretation Keller is able to argue that transcendental self-consciousness underwrites a general theory of objectivity (...) and subjectivity at the same time. Whereas Michael Friedman articulated a notion of relativized a priori which owes much to Carnap's internal/external distinction, André Carus attempted to restate Carnap's ideal (...) of explication in a way that bridges the gap between conceptual engineering and naturalism. On the other hand, Mark Wilson argued that concepts develop in unpredictable ways and cannot be planned in the way classical analytic philosophy has assumed from Frege and Russell onwards. In this article I am not going to try and define introspection. I am going to try to state as precisely as possible how the practice of introspection can be improved, starting from the principle that there exists a disjunction between the logic of action and of conceptualization and the practice of introspection does not require that one should already be in possession of an exhaustive scientific knowledge bearing upon it. . To make matters worse, innumerable commentators upon what passes (...) for introspection do not seem to have practised it and have certainly never contributed anything to its development. My aim is therefore to bring to light a procedure for progressive improvement in the practice of introspection when it is employed in a programme of research. (shrink)

This volumes aim is to provide an introduction to Carnaps book from a historical and philosophical perspective, each chapter focusing on one specific issue. The book will be of interest not only to Carnap scholars but to all those interested in the history of analytical philosophy.

In 2006, Perruchet and Pacton (2006) asked whether implicit learning and statistical learning represent two approaches to the same phenomenon. This article represents an important follow‐up to their seminal review article. As in the previous paper, the focus is on the formation of elementary cognitive units. Both approaches favor different explanations on what these units consist of and how they are formed. Perruchet weighs up the evidence for different explanations and concludes with a helpful agenda for future research.

This paper reviews Deleuze’s theory of language in Logic of Sense, and Deleuze and Guattari’s theory of language in A Thousand Plateaus. In the ontology informed by the Stoics described in those books, human being and language do not exist separately but in a mixture of words and things. The author argues that this flattened ontology of surfaces is incommensurable with the ontology of depth used in conventional humanist qualitative methodology and recommends beginning new empirical inquiry with a concept instead (...) of with method and methodology. In mass democracies, voting—in elections or referendums—is the main way in which most citizens can publicly express their political preferences. And yet this means of expression is sometimes perceived by them as highly frustrating, partly because it does not allow for much expression. Dominant voting methods lead to a reduction of options, pressure citizens to vote tactically at the cost of expressing their genuine preferences, and fail to convey what they really think about different candidates, parties, or options. Yet citizens (...) do not merely have a right to vote; they have a more fundamental right to political expression from which one can derive a right to a voting method that offers the most opportunities for expression among those satisfying other important requirements. The aim of this article is therefore to add this consideration about the importance of political expression to debates about voting methods that have mainly been conducted from the perspective of social choice theory. To illustrate what is at stake, it introduces evaluative voting methods (allowing voters to grade all of the candidates, parties, or options) as a promising way of honoring the right to political expression without jeopardizing other important properties of voting methods. In response to Germain argument that evolution by natural selection has a limited explanatory power in cancer, Lean and Plutynski have recently argued that many adaptations in cancer only make sense at the tumor level, and that cancer progression mirrors the major evolutionary transitions. While we agree that selection could potentially act at various levels of organization in cancers, we argue that tumor-level selection is unlikely to actually play a relevant role in our understanding of the somatic evolution of human (...) cancers. Wittgensteinian readings of Being and Time, and of the source of the intelligibility of Dasein''s world, in terms of language and the average everyday public practices of das Man are partly right and partly wrong. They are right in correcting overly individualist and existentialist readings of Heidegger. But they are wrong in making Heidegger into a proponent of language or everydayness as the final word on intelligibility and the way the world is disclosed to us. The everydayness of das Man (...) and language are partial sources of intelligibility but only insofar as they are comprehended within the greater unitary structure of care and temporality. Care and temporality constitute the foundational underpinnings for disclosure and the intelligibility ofthat wherein Dasein dwells. (shrink)

In a recently published paper, we argued that theories of cultural evolution can gain explanatory power by being more pluralistic. In his reply to it, Dennett agreed that more pluralism is needed. Our paper’s main point was to urge cultural evolutionists to get their hands dirty by describing the fine details of cultural products and by striving to offer detailed and, when explanatory, varied algorithms or mechanisms to account for them. While Dennett’s latest work on cultural evolution does marvelously well (...) on the first point, it has only whet our appetite on the second. Accordingly, the present paper aims to show what an evolutionary explanation of culture that takes the variety of cultural evolution mechanisms seriously would look like. We will focus on the cultural evolution of social epistemic mechanisms and we will propose that Darwinian algorithms should be complemented with a cultural analogue of the error reduction mechanism proposed to account for human cognition, with a particular emphasis on the necessity to build independencies between different sub-systems in charge of tracking states of the world. To illustrate our point, we will present how the evolution of the legal system as epistemic systems can be understood as a process of building increasingly better independencies and how various criticisms of the actual legal system calls for building even more of them. As is often the case when scientific or engineering fields emerge, new concepts are forged or old ones are adapted. When this happens, various arguments rage over what ultimately turns out to be conceptual misunderstandings. At that critical time, there is a need for an explicit reflection on the meaning of the concepts that define the field. In this position paper, we aim to provide a reasoned framework in which to think about various issues in the field of distributed cognition. (...) We argue that both relevant concepts, distribution and cognition, must be understood as continuous. As it is used in the context of distributed cognition, the concept of distribution is essentially fuzzy, and we will link it to the notion of emergence of system-level properties. The concept of cognition must also be seen as fuzzy, but for a different reason: due to its origin as an anthropocentric concept, no one has a clear handle on its meaning in a distributed setting. As the proposed framework forms a space, we then explore its geography and visit famous landmarks. (shrink)

Political judgments usually combine a normative principle or intuition with an appreciation of empirical facts regarding the achievability of different options and their potential consequences. The interesting question dividing partisans of political idealism and realism is whether these kinds of considerations should be integrated into the normative principles themselves or considered apart. At first sight, if a theorist is concerned with guiding political judgments, non-ideal or realist theorizing can seem more attractive. In this article, however, I argue that ideal theorizing (...) might be considered valuable even by theorists moved by a pragmatic concern because it is less exposed to conservatism. I nonetheless contend that the aim to guide action in the world as it is should not be abandoned. Therefore, I outline a four-step method for proceeding from abstract moral principles to concrete political judgments and apply it to a test case. (shrink)

Ce livre a pour objet d’évaluer l’apport de la physique quantique à l’explication du phénomène de la conscience. Après un état des lieux d’ordre sémantique, philosophique et neurobiologique de la question de la relation entre cerveau et conscience, les principaux modèles « classiques » actuels de la conscience sont exposés. Nous montrons que ces modèles laissent en suspens deux questions importantes : a) celle d’expliquer la synchronisation quasi-instantanée de régions éloignées du cerveau qui semble nécessaire à la constitution de percepts (...) conscients; b) celle du fossé explicatif qui existe entre l’expérience subjective, relevant de ce que le sujet est capable de ressentir de façon privée, et la description de ses corrélats neurophysiologiques dans le langage de la science, à la troisième personne – comment ces derniers « donnent-ils lieu » à l’expérience subjective?Les approches quantiques de la conscience plus récentes sont alors exposées de façon détaillée. Nous examinons dans quelle mesure elles peuvent contribuer à répondre à ces questions et proposer une représentation unificatrice intégrant les deux aspects psychique et physiologique du phénomène de conscience. Criticisms and rejections of representationalism are increasingly popular in 4E cognitive science, and especially in radical enactivism. But by overfocusing our attention on the debate between radical enactivism and classical representationalism, we might miss the woods for the trees, in at least two respects: first, by neglecting the relevance of other theoretical alternatives about representationalism in cognitive science; and second by not seeing how much REC and classical representationalism are in agreement concerning basic and problematic issues dealing with mental content (...) and intentionality. In order to expand and exemplify these ideas, this paper presents two heterodox positions on intentionality and on the relations between content and representation. Special attention is paid to the way REC is rejecting these positions: I argue that this rejection reveals common assumptions with classical representationalism, but also undermines the coherence of REC’s conception of intentionality. Le savoir-sagesse des « Ioniens », y compris dans ses aspects que nous définirions comme « rationnels », ne peut se pratiquer (...) que dans la dépendance des dieux. Les deux figures étudiées sont celles pour lesquelles les témoignages sont suffisamment nombreux : il s’agit de Thalès, le fondateur de l’école, et d’Anaxagore, qui en aurait transmis l’esprit à Athènes. Nous présentons dans cet article une approche noétique des genres qui, tentant de dépasser l’opposition entre sémiologie et herméneutique, s’intéresse à la manière dont les structures symboliques créent des modes de pensée particuliers. En remarquant que les fondateurs de la (...) narratologie, sous couvert de fiction, ont en réalité analysé le seul genre romanesque, elle propose de repartir de leur travail pour mettre au jour le fonctionnement des synthèses diachronique et synchronique propres au roman. N’en restant pas à cette analyse des structures sémiotiques, la noétique procède à leur interprétation phénoménologique, et montre que le mode de pensée du roman est celui de ce que Hegel appelle l’expérience de la conscience. Résumé À partir de 1870, la poésie semble s’être soudain libérée de toutes les règles. Ce n’est pas tout à fait le cas, puisque l’abolition des conventions signa la naissance des contraintes – et d’un nouveau type de poésie, à la fois hermétique et ludique. Nous construisons dans cet article un concept de contrainte à même de rendre compte de cette transformation radicale de la poésie au cours du vingtième siècle (notamment par différence avec les concepts de résistance, de convention (...) et de dispositif), en même temps que nous présentons les tenants linguistiques et les aboutissants esthétiques de cette nouvelle poésie de la singularité impersonnelle. Résumé Charles Wolfe vient de publier Lire le matérialisme (ENS Éditions, 2020), où il esquisse une histoire des différentes formes de matérialisme, y compris le matérialisme vitaliste et les versions du XXe et du XXIe siècle. Pierre-François Moreau, auteur de la préface de l’ouvrage, entame ici une discussion sur les problèmes et les ressources d’une telle histoire.

Que savons-nous de l'avenir? Quel sera l'état de nos connaissances dans quarante ans? Comment pouvons-nous l'entrevoir sans faire de science-fiction? Ce livre apporte une réponse, par une réflexion prospective sur la science et la technologie à l'horizon 2050 : des "ruptures" (des nouveaux concepts, des théories nouvelles) pourraient-elles changer la donne? Parviendrons-nous à mieux comprendre les mécanismes du vivant et de la conscience? Pouvons-nous envisager un renouvellement des théories de la matière et de l'univers et l'avènement d'une nouvelle informatique, etc.? (...) La prospective prend en compte les besoins de la société (dans les domaines de l'énergie, du travail, de la santé et de l'alimentation, de la sécurité) qui auront un impact sur la recherche (une nouvelle robotique, l'utilisation en médecine des thérapies géniques, des innovations dans l'énergie, etc.). Elle doit aussi anticiper l'évolution des liens entre science et société : la recherche, vecteur de l'"économie de la connaissance", échappera-t-elle à la dictature du temps court et rendra-t-elle le monde plus lisible? Une nouvelle géopolitique de la science et de la technologie et de nouveaux modes de production des connaissances émergeront-ils? Comment engager le débat sur les choix technologiques et la dimension éthique des enjeux? C'est à ces questions que l'auteur, armé de sa longue expérience de responsable de la politique scientifique française, tente ici de répondre, à travers des scénarios du futur. (shrink)

Αντιμετωπίζονται δύο υποθέσεις : πρόκειται είτε για ένα άγαλμα του Απόλλωνος αφιερωμένο από τους Αμφικτιονες ως αποζημίωση για την ιεροσυλία των Φωκαέων, είτε για τον ομφαλό. Η δεύτερη υπόθεση θα συμφωνούσε με (...) την πορεία του Παυσανία και, επιπλέον, δεν διαψεύδεται από τους λογαριασμούς οικοδόμησης του ναού. (shrink)

Γωνιαῖος λίθος ἀπό τους τοίχους τοῦ Θησαυροῦ τῆς Μασσαλίας, σέ δεύτερη χρήση στήν ὕστερη ἀρχαιότητα, δυτικά ἀπό τό ἱερό τοῦ 'Απόλλωνα. 3. Λίθος ἐπιστυλίου τοῦ δωρικοῦ Θησαυροῦ, πού χρησιμοποιήθηκε στήν ἴδια περιοχή γιά δεύτερη φορά στά χριστιανικά χρόνια σάν γούρνα κοσμημένη μέ (...) σταυρό. Χρονολόγηση τοῦ δωρικοῦ Θησαυροῦ τῆς Μαρμαριᾶς καί τοῦ Θησαυροῦ τῶν 'Αθηναίων : γύρω στά 470/465 καί 485/480 π.Χ. ἀντίστοιχα. 4. 1. — Delphes : Les bases campaniformes des Deïnoménides ne portaient pas directement de trépied, comme les cavités du lit d'attente et les textes l'avaient fait croire, mais une colonne de bronze sur laquelle se dressaient le trépied et la statue. Publication d'autres bases campaniformes analogues, que leur profil amène à rapprocher des bases de colonnes des palais perses. Étude d'un type apparenté, trois bases campaniformes tronquées, qui portaient des colonnes. Réexamen du socle attribué au trépied de Platées. Si les (...) blocs des deux assises circulaires et certains blocs des assises carrées avec des crampons en double-gamma, appartiennent bien à un même monument, la disparition de la 3e assise circulaire nous prive de tout élément pour savoir si et comment la colonne serpentine était fixée sur ce socle. Socle d'un trépied anonyme qui peut correspondre aux « morceaux importants d'un monument rond » du Journal de la grande fouille, trouvé entre le temple et l'autel. Autres trépieds. Le cippe des Tyrrhéniens ne portait pas de trépied. 2. — Péloponnèse : La seule base importante de trépied dans le Péloponnèse se trouve à Messène, au sommet de l'Ithôme. (shrink)

This paper shows that the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt test of locality of correlations which was originally designed to be used with binary observables can actually be used for any couples of quantum-like bounded continuous observables, and then for any experimental situation describable within the mathematical framework of quantum theory.
