Verfasser versucht die moderne Sinnlosigkeitserfahrung mit dem modernen Anspruchsdenken in den Zusammenhang zu bringen. Er stellt die These: die moderne Sinnlosigkeitserfahrung rührt nicht aus Sinnamangel her, sie entsteht aus einer Übererwartung von Sinn. Heuzutage Sinnanspruch ist übermäßig. Marquard plädiert für eine Einschränkung des unmäßig gewordenen Sinnanspruchs -für eine Diät in Sachen Sinnerwartung. Und- so meint erwas man (...) dabei am meisten lassen muß, ist der direkte Sinnanspruch und Sinnperfektionismus. Marquard stellt die These fest, das die Sinnfrage wird nicht prinzipiellentschieden, sondern wird indirekt und positiv mitentschieden durch die Besorgung der nächsten Dinge: durch die Erledigung des Details (Kleine Lebenspflichten und Lebensgewonheiten). Auf die Frage: wozu ist überhaupt etwas und nicht vielmehr nichtskönnen die Menschen keinen absoluten Sinnbeweis geben, weil unser Leben zu kurz ist. Aber daraus folgt nicht, nach Marquard, die Veneinung des Lebens. Wenn wir bereits leben, haben wir faktisch-zwar nicht prinzipiell-dem Leben durch Leben jeweils schon irgendiwie zugestimmt. Menschen können weder das absoluten Sinnlosigkeitsbeweis noch absoluten Sinnbeweis liefern. Mir haben - unser Leben ist zu kurz - nicht die Zeit das Leben absolut zu führen. This article examines two cases that present ethical challenges encountered by social workers in making decisions either to maintain professional boundaries or fulfil moral obligations while working with service users in vulnerable situations. In the first case, a Lebanese social worker narrates how she was motivated to step out of her official responsibilities to assist a refugee mother of three who showed suicidal ideation. In the second case, a Ugandan social worker recounts her experience while working with a family whose (...) 12-year-old daughter was raped and became pregnant, but whose parents refused to accept abortion when medical diagnosis showed that the girl’s life was in danger. A commentary from the authors is provided after each case. Both social workers were arguably motivated to act based on their concern to care for people, protect human rights, and save lives in the two case scenarios. This underscores the relevance of the ethics of care and virtue ethics in describing the associated ethical challenges in both cases. Furthermore, the dynamic nature of the ethical challenges encountered by the social workers demands open minds and flexibility in decision-making. (shrink)

Human beings are both needy and dignified. How should we think about the relationship between our neediness and our worth? Card argues well that our vulnerability to luck is intertwined in the very conditions of moral agency. We can see the merit of her approach even more clearly by turning to some difficulties the Stoics have in preserving dignity while removing vulnerability. Stoicism does, however, help us to sort through the difficulties involved as we try to combine love of particular (...) people with respect for all human life. Richardson is correct to suggest that love itself can animate the concern for all humanity; I also agree with him that institutions must play a major role in any solution to problems of inequality between nations. Although the “capabilities approach” offers an attractive account of one part of the goal of just political institutions, combining, as Moody‐Adams suggests, respect for difference with a commitment to universal norms, I now believe that the capabilities account should be combined with a form of Rawlsian political liberalism that protects spaces within which citizens may pursue the good as they understand it. Using the bench trial of Colorado’s Amendment 2 as an example, this article focuses on the more general question of expert testimony in moral philosophy. It argues that there is indeed expertise in moral philosophy but argues against admitting such expert testimony in cases dealing with what John Rawls terms “constitutional essentials” and ‘matters of basic justice.” Developing the idea of public reason inherent in the Rawlsian concept of political liberalism, the article argues that philosophers can and should speak out (...) on public issues, if they do so with due respect for certain restrictions, but that they should not serve as expert witnesses on core constitutional questions, since doing so suggests that they claim a type of authority that would require fellow citizens to defer to their views. Such claims to authority in basic ethical matters threaten the mutual respect for divergent comprehensive doctrines that lies at the core of political liberalism. Philosophers have a duty to serve the public good, and they perform this service in fruitful ways. But they should refuse a public role that appears incompatible with equal respect for the committed ethical searching of their fellow citizens. (shrink)

The use of the social sciences in the interpretation of the New Testament emerged from the 1970s and has become a standard methodology for interpreting the New Testament. However, it has not been significantly used in the interpretation of the New Testament in Nigeria by biblical scholars. This article discusses what social-scientific criticism is and the need for its application in the interpretation of the New Testament by Nigerian New Testament scholars for a better understanding of the New Testament and (...) the people, beliefs and teachings it presents and contextualisation in the face of changing contexts of Christianity in Nigeria. Contribution: As far as we know, this article is the first one written on using social-scientific criticism to interpret the New Testament in the Nigerian context. It therefore contributes to the need for a multidisciplinary approach to interpreting the New Testament in Nigeria in particular and Africa in general. Theodicies, or metaphysical attempts to solve the problem of evil, have relied on a special application of this principle of explanatory rationalism, namely, the principle of plenitude, which holds that the evil in the world is a necessary ingredient in the world's overall perfection or degree of reality.
