  8. Why medicine cannot be a science.Ronald Munson - 1981 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 6 (2):183-208.
My thesis is that, although medicine is scientific, it is not and can not become a science. After rejecting as flawed an argument attempting to show that medicine is already a science, I argue that a comparison of such basic, defining features as internal aims, criteria of success, and principles regulating the enterprises demonstrate that medicine and science are inherently different. I then argue that while it may be possible to reduce the cognitive content of medicine (...)

  9. Medicine and paradigms of embodiment.Drew Leder - 1984 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 9 (1):29-44.
This paper suggests that the paradigm of the lived-body developed by Straus, Merleau-Ponty and others has important implications for medical practice and theory. Certain recognized flaws in modern medicine, such as its reductionist tendencies and lack of emphasis on preventive measures are shown to be related to the exclusive use of a Cartesian notion of embodiment. Increased attention to the paradigm of the lived-body emphasizing its unity, purposiveness and "enworldment" could help to beneficially reorient practice. Moreover, this portrayal of (...)

  11. Truth, trust and medicine.Jennifer C. Jackson - 2001 - New York: Routledge.
Truth, Trust and Medicine investigates the notion of trust and honesty in medicine, and questions whether honesty and openness are of equal importance in maintaining the trust necessary in doctor-patient relationships. Jackson begins with the premise that those in the medical profession have a basic duty to be worthy of the trust their patients place in them. Yet questions of the ethics of withholding information and consent and covert surveillance in care units persist. This book boldly addresses these (...)

    Medicine in John Locke's philosophy.Miguel A. Sanchez-Gonzalez - 1990 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 15 (6):675-695.
John Locke's philosophy was deeply affected by medicine of his times. It was specially influenced by the medical thought and practice of Thomas Sydenham. Locke was a personal friend of Sydenham, expressed an avid interest in his work and shared his views and methods. The influence of Sydenham's medicine can be seen in the following areas of Locke's philosophy: his “plain historical method”; the emphasis on observation and sensory experience instead of seeking the essence of things; the rejection (...)

    Medicine and dialogue.Richard M. Zaner - 1990 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 15 (3):303-325.
Physicians have for some time been questioning the prevailing view of medicine as applied biology. It is urged that medicine needs to be reconceived so as to provide appropriate emphasis on the patient's experience and understanding of illness. After reviewing these arguments and the scientific paradigm underlying the received view in light of certain themes in medicine's history and of current thinking, Pellegrino's thesis is analyzed: medicine should be understood as an inherently moral enterprise, a form (...)

  15. Medicine's symbolic reality.Arthur M. Kleinman - 1973 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 16 (1-4):206 – 213.
Modern socio?cultural studies of medicine demonstrate the symbolic character of much of medical reality. This symbolic reality can be appreciated as mediating the traditional division of medicine into biophysical and human sciences. Comparative studies of medical systems offer a general model for medicine as a human science. These studies document that medicine, from an historical and cross?cultural perspective, is constituted as a cultural system in which symbolic meanings take an active part in disease formation, the classification (...)

ArgumentRevising the diffusionist view of current scholarship on the Pasteur Institutes in China, this paper demonstrates the ways in which local networks and circumstances informed the circulation and construction of knowledge and practices relating to smallpox prophylaxis in the Southwest of China during the early twentieth century. I argue that the Pasteur Institute of Chengdu did not operate in a natural continuity with the preceding local French medical institutions, but rather presented an intentional break from them. This Institute, as the (...)

The impact of twenty-first century personalized medicine versus twenty-first century medicine’s impact on personalization.Camille Abettan & Jos V. M. Welie - 2020 - Philosophy, Ethics and Humanities in Medicine 15 (1):1-8.
BackgroundOver the past decade, the exponential growth of the literature devoted to personalized medicine has been paralleled by an ever louder chorus of epistemic and ethical criticisms. Their differences notwithstanding, both advocates and critics share an outdated philosophical understanding of the concept of personhood and hence tend to assume too simplistic an understanding of personalization in health care.MethodsIn this article, we question this philosophical understanding of personhood and personalization, as these concepts shape the field of personalized medicine. We (...)

The unique ethical challenges of conducting research in the rehabilitation medicine population.Jeff Blackmer - 2003 - BMC Medical Ethics 4 (1):1-6.
Background The broad topic of research ethics is one which has been relatively well-investigated and discussed. Unique ethical issues have been identified for such populations as pediatrics, where the issues of consent and assent have received much attention, and obstetrics, with concerns such as the potential for research to cause harm to the fetus. However, little has been written about ethical concerns which are relatively unique to the population of patients seen by the practitioner of rehabilitation medicine. Discussion This (...)

"Dialogue" is one of American religion's shopworn terms. Although we hear much talk about dialogue, very little of it actually takes place. Religious discourse - especially about politics and public affairs - is increasingly polarized, involving much contestation but little conversation. If truth are to be tested, however, there is no substitute for dialogue.

    Rationality in Medicine: An Explication.B. Gert & K. D. Clouser - 1986 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 11 (2):185-205.
Various meanings of “rational” implicitly and explicitly suggested in this issue's articles are abstracted and stated. Two accounts of rationality are shown to be able to explain most uses of “rational”: the “cool moment” account and a more objective account. The former is examined and modified, but still found inadequate. The objective account of rational is developed, taking “irrational” as the basic concept. “Irrational” is given content in terms of a list, and “rational” is subsequently defined as “not irrational”. Reasons (...)

In a heart-wrenching TEDx Beacon Street talk entitled "A Journey Through Infertility: Over Terror's Edge", Camille Preston narrates her traumatic journey through infertility. Although she is now the mother of a child, Preston's characterization of infertility as "over terror's edge" and as "a journey" finds a graphic expression in Paula Knight's The Facts of Life, Emily Steinberg's Broken Eggs, and Phoebe Potts's Good Eggs. Unlike Preston, these authors do not give birth to a child; however, they authentically portray the tribulations (...)

The Dawn of Medicine: Ancient Egypt and Athotis, the King-Physician.Jakub Kwiecinski - 2013 - Perspectives in Biology and Medicine 56 (1):99-104.
When trying to understand the medical profession, one instinctively looks at its history. Questions come to mind, such as when did it start, and who was the first physician? A practice of healing seems to be as old as the mankind (Majno 1975), so it is unlikely that one will ever find the exact answers. However, when searching for the first known physician, we come to ancient Egypt and one of Egypt’s first rulers, Athothis. In a third-century BCE history of (...)
