This is the first of a series of papers devoted to the thorough investigation of refinement based on an underlying partial relational model. In this paper we restrict attention to operation refinement. We explore four theories of refinement based on an underlying partial relation model for specifications, and we show that they are all equivalent. This, in particular, sheds some light on the relational completion operator due to Woodcock which underlies data refinement in, for example, the specification language Z. Throughout the biological and biomedical sciences there is a growing need for, prescriptive ‘minimum information’ (MI) checklists specifying the key information to include when reporting experimental results are beginning to find favor with experimentalists, analysts, publishers and funders alike. Such checklists aim to ensure that methods, data, analyses and results are described to a level sufficient to support the unambiguous interpretation, sophisticated search, reanalysis and experimental corroboration and reuse of data sets, facilitating the extraction of maximum value from data sets (...) them. However, such ‘minimum information’ MI checklists are usually developed independently by groups working within representatives of particular biologically- or technologically-delineated domains. Consequently, an overview of the full range of checklists can be difficult to establish without intensive searching, and even tracking thetheir individual evolution of single checklists may be a non-trivial exercise. Checklists are also inevitably partially redundant when measured one against another, and where they overlap is far from straightforward. Furthermore, conflicts in scope and arbitrary decisions on wording and sub-structuring make integration difficult. This presents inhibit their use in combination. Overall, these issues present significant difficulties for the users of checklists, especially those in areas such as systems biology, who routinely combine information from multiple biological domains and technology platforms. To address all of the above, we present MIBBI (Minimum Information for Biological and Biomedical Investigations); a web-based communal resource for such checklists, designed to act as a ‘one-stop shop’ for those exploring the range of extant checklist projects, and to foster collaborative, integrative development and ultimately promote gradual integration of checklists. [English] Overlooked Generic Masculine Forms – Consistency in Usage of Gender-Conscious Language in the "Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie" (German Journal of Philosophy) in 2020 The present article examines to what extent and how consistently gender-conscious language is used in academic papers. We analysed every paper published in 2020 in the journal “Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie” (transl.: German Journal for Philosophy) that contained overlooked usages of generic masculine forms in otherwise gender-conscious language. Our results showed that only 16 out of 35 (...) papers used gender-conscious language. Out of those 16, only 5 used gender-conscious language in more than 50% of possible usages. None of the articles consistently used gender-conscious language. This means that in each of those 16 papers that used gender-conscious language, at least one “overlooked generic masculine form” was detected. Our hypotheses that generic masculine forms are more often overlooked if they are either (i) not related to the thematic focus of the article, or (ii) technical terms, were confirmed. -/- [German] Der vorliegende Artikel untersucht, inwiefern und wenn ja wie konsequent in wissenschaftlichen Artikeln gegendert wird. Analysiert wurden alle 2020 erschienen Artikel in der Deutschen Zeitschrift für Philosophie, in denen übersehene generische Maskulina vorkommen. Unsere Ergebnisse zeigen, dass lediglich in 16 von 35 Artikeln gegendert wurde. Von diesen 16 Arbeiten gendern wiederum nur fünf in mehr als 50% der Fälle. In keinem der analysierten Artikel wird jede Personenbezeichnung, die potentiell gegendert werden könnte, auch tatsächlich gegendert. Das heißt, in jedem einzelnen dieser 16 Artikel gibt es mindestens ein “übersehenes generisches Maskulinum”. Unsere Hypothesen, dass generische Maskulina öfter “übersehen” werden, wenn sie entweder nicht im thematischen Fokus des Artikels stehen oder Fachbegriffe sind, konnten bestätigt werden. (shrink)

Das Wirken des Philosophen, Humanisten und Kirchenreformers Nicolaus Cusanus (1401-1464) zwischen Deutschland und Italien gestaltete sich als eine singuläre kulturelle Vermittlungsleistung von europäischen Dimensionen. Das Buch stellt diese Thematik zum ersten Mal in einer Monographie dar und ist als Ergebnis der Zusammenarbeit renommierter deutscher und italienischer Wissenschaftler auf einem internationalen Symposion aus Anlass des 600. Geburtstages des Cusanus entstanden. Ein einleitender Beitrag fasst auf der Grundlage einer umfangreichen Bibliographie den Forschungsstand mit dem Ergebnis zusammen, dass die kontrovers diskutierte Frage, inwieweit (...) der Deutsche Cusanus der Erneuerungsbewegung des italienischen Quattrocento zuzurechnen sei, einer vertieften Klärung bedarf. Dieser Frage widmen sich die fünf Hauptteile des Buches: In Einzeluntersuchungen wird dargelegt, wie Cusanus Einflüsse der deutschen und italienischen Kultur aufnahm, welche Präsenz er in der Handschriften- und Bibliothekskultur des 15. Jahrhunderts hatte, inwieweit er selbst auf seine deutschen und italienischen Zeitgenossen wirkte, welche Einflüsse von ihm auf die Philosophie des italienischen Quattrocento tatsächlich ausgingen und welche Bedeutung seiner Gestalt in der Gesamtperspektive der deutschen und italienischen Kultur an der Schwelle vom Spätmittelalter zur Frühneuzeit zukommt. Im Ergebnis wird Cusanus als eine Gestalt sichtbar, die in ganz einzigartiger Weise die kontroversen Strömungen im Deutschland und Italien seiner Zeit - wie beispielsweise die Mystik der transalpinen Reformklöster einerseits und die neuen philologischen und mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Methoden der italienischen Humanisten andererseits - unter Wahrung ihrer Identität zu einer höheren Synthese vereinen konnte. Angestrebt wird eine Klärung der angemessenen Rolle von Methodologien durch Untersuchung der Auswirkungen unterschiedlicher methodologischer Ansätze auf Theoriewahlentscheidungen in der Wissenschaft. Ergebnis ist, dass sich methodologische Theorien weniger gut dafür eignen, solche Entscheidungen konkret anzuleiten. Ihre Stärke liegt stattdessen darin, eine zusammenhängende Klasse von Exzellenzmerkmalen zu umreißen und auf diese Weise systematisch zu bestimmen, Theorien welcher Beschaffenheit besonders zum Erkenntnisfortschritt beitragen.

According to Kant, men cannot do evil for the sake of evil. A satanic act of resistance against the moral law is impossible, and therefore the idea of ultimate evil is called a “mere idea”. However, it isn’t impossible to realize the idea of satanic evil, as is widely thought: the idea of ultimate evil can be fully realized by the everyday evil of men, as if they were ultimately evil. Kant exposes this structure within his Doctrine of Right (1797) (...) as an extension of his philosophy of radical evil, presented in Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason (1793). This interpretation will be developed in a close reading of the crucial passage – where it is the revolutionizing people of France who are held responsible for having realized the idea of satanic evil. Human nature is a central theme also of Spinoza′s political philosophy. His conception of government and governing includes a variety of reflections on how to effectively influence and direct human behaviour. The reconstruction of this theme in Spinoza′s writing can reveal surprising connections with current discussions on the relationship between politics and nature.

To date philosophical reflections on the Holocaust and Holocaust survivor testimony have come almost exclusively from authors in the so-called “Continental tradition”. This paper is an attempt to contribute to the scholarship on Holocaust survivor testimony using some of the concepts and conceptions of “analytic philosophy”, more precisely, some of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s remarks in On Certainty. The paper uses these remarks to analyse the “linguistic despair” expressed by many Holocaust survivors when trying to put their horrendous experiences into words.

The contribution explores the demands that arise when, instead of speaking of »intellectual history« or »history of ideas«, one proposes using once again the term »Geistesgeschichte« – to be sure, in a methodologically revised form. In that case, it is argued here, the synthetic claims that inhere in the concept »Geist« understood as a singular term would have to be reformulated in a manner keyed to contemporary assumptions. The essay makes several recommendations how that could occur.

As a member of the Illuminati Order, Karl Leonhard Reinhold wrote an – hitherto unknown – expert report about an internal manuscript on “The development of the forces of our mind” in January 1785. The manuscript had outlined a materialist theory of sensations and a conception of the interplay of the drives of pleasure and self-preservation. The claim, renewed some years ago, of being able to advise on personal questions of life seems to bring philosophy into a fundamental conflict with its other claim of promoting human self-determination. However, the conflict only arises if philosophy does not sufficiently distinguish between the social orientation of self-determination towards universality and the subjective orientation of action execution. This is the case both in subjectivist mentalism and in the tradition of philosophy of language. The insufficient distinction prevents philosophy not only (...) from being able to be helpful in the case of action but also from adequately explaining its object, the human orientation of validity. Plessner clarifies the basis of the practical distinction between social validity and subjective action orientation. Against this background we can better understand Socrates’ and Wittgenstein’s views on how philosophy must proceed in discourse if it is to provide assistance in personal questions without paternalism. Cavells originärer Beitrag zur praktischen Philosophie lässt sich nur durch eine Rekonstruktion des wichtigen Topos des ‘moralischen Perfektionismus’ angemessen verstehen. Er bezieht sich zum einen auf Cavells an Thoreau und Emerson orientierte dynamische Konzeption des Selbst, das sich erst in ständiger Auseinandersetzung bildet und weiterentwickelt. Er steht zum anderen für das Bild einer intern agonal verfassten Gemeinschaft, die sich nie mit dem erreichten Maß an Gerechtigkeit zufrieden gibt.

It is not evident in what sense philosophy relates to its own time and present. From the history of philosophical thought, several models have been suggested, ranging from a strong reliance on tradition to the wholesale rejection of the present and demand for a ‘philosophy of the future,’ from the suspicion that philosophy is nothing but one ideology among others to the demand that philosophy should engage in the struggles and conflicts of its time in order to prepare for a (...) better future. The essay presents an assessment and problematization of these approaches and argues for a point of view that starts from philosophy’s precarious, ambivalent and contingent relation to its time and contemporaneity. Neither wholly independent of nor entirely subjected to its own time, philosophy can inhabit a shifting position from which critique and resistance are possible even if not ultimately guaranteed.
