We seem to be abandoning the codes that told previous generations who they should love. But now that many of us are free to choose whoever we want, nothing is less certain. However, today more than ever, the search for “common” enemies results in anything but unanimity. Scapegoats like Saddam Hussein, for example, led to a stark polarization in the United States. _Melanie Klein and Marcelle Spira: Their Correspondence and Context__ _includes 45 letters Melanie Klein wrote to the Swiss psychoanalyst Marcelle Spira between 1955 and 1960, as well as six rough drafts from Spira. They were discovered in Spira’s library after her death in 2006. As only a few of the letters that Klein wrote to her colleagues have been preserved, this moving, historically important correspondence sheds new light upon the last five years of Klein’s creative life. The common theme of (...) the letters is their discussion of the French translation of _The Psycho-Analysis of Children_ by Boulanger in collaboration with Spira. The translation, first undertaken by Lacan, went through many ups and downs until it was published in 1959 by the Presses Universitaires de France. Klein also discusses her current work, in particular _Envy and Gratitude_. She encourages her pioneering Swiss colleague Spira to be patient in the face of the resistance shown towards Kleinian thinking. Identifying herself to some extent with her younger follower, Klein reveals a very touching autobiographical account of the difficulties that she herself had encountered in her work and how she overcame them. In _Melanie Klein and Marcelle Spira: Their Correspondence and Context_, Jean-Michel Quinodoz brings together these important letters. This rare collection of their correspondence is a valuable contribution to the history of psychoanalysis and will be essential reading for psychoanalysts, trainee psychoanalysts and lay readers with an interest in the work of Klein and Spira. Over the past twenty years, Husserlian phenomenology has increasingly drawn the attention of the cognitive community, thereby leading to the emergence of what might be called a phenomenological trend within contemporary cognitive studies. What this phenomenological trend really amounts to is however a matter of debate. The reason is that it embodies, in fact, a multifaceted reflection about the relevance of Husserlian phenomenology to the current efforts towards a scientific theory of cognition, and, to a lesser degree, about the reciprocal (...) relevance of these efforts to the fate of the Husserlian tradition. Indeed, it covers a wide array of perspectives on these questions, ranging from tentative demonstrations of the cognitively misleading character of Husserl's ideas, inasmuch as they would incarnate the same foundational errors as cognitivism (Hall and Dreyfus 1982), to diametrically opposed views arguing that the naturalist bent of contemporary cognitive science is ill-conceived, and that only the brand of transcendentalism defended by Husserl can provide it with adequate foundations (cf., for instance, Villela-Petit 1999). An essential feature of the quantum mechanical formalism, entanglement is widely thought to imply nonlocality or nonseparability as a puzzling trait of our ‘quantum world’. The notion of entanglement is reviewed and the question is addressed of whether invoking nonlocal influences, or perhaps time-reversed causation, is warranted in such ‘applications’ as quantum teleportation and entanglement swapping.

Ce livre ambitieux reconstruit les critères qui ont pu départager les conduites honorables et les conduites déshonorantes, et montre, archives à l'appui, qu'il y a peu encore ces critères furent appliqués à des résistants communistes et aux victimes de la Shoah, en particulier les membres des Sonderkommandos. Il signale les évolutions considérables de nos sensibilités morales et pointe les régressions associées au risque d'un " chacun pour soi " décomplexé. Despite its internal divisions and the uncertainty surrounding many of its foundations, there is a growing consensus that the on‐going search for an alternative model of the mind finds a minimal theoretical identity in the pursuit of an anti‐Cartesian conception of mental phenomena. Nevertheless, this anti‐Cartesianism remains more or less explicitly committed to the neo‐Brentanian idea that intentionality is an essential feature of the mental—an idea that has prevailed since the advent of modern cognitive science in the 1950s. An issue (...) of compatibility is thereby raised, as neo‐Brentanism arguably sides with cognitive Cartesianism. The main goal of the paper is to put into full light one specific aspect of this largely unperceived problem of compatibility by arguing that the neo‐Brentanian property of intentionality is an essentially representational one that runs counter to the salient anti‐representationalism of anti‐Cartesianism. And, that this representational essence confronts the search for alternative models of the mind of an anti‐Cartesian kind with the following theoretical issue: To what extent is it possible to devise a non‐Brentanian property of intentionality, particularly one that is fully dissociated from the property of representation? This issue is shown to be much deeper and more difficult than it looks once the nature of representation is properly apprehended; it seems to be still waiting for an answer in the current search for an alternative model of the mind, if only because it has not yet be set in fully adequate terms. L’article est une exploration systématique de la dualité des figures du Mind et du Geist, le premier étant entendu comme l’esprit en tant que partie de la nature scientifiquement objectivable, le second comme l’esprit en tant qu’acteur immatériel insaisissable de la pensée. De plus, cette dualité est étudiée du point de vue de l’interférence de la mathématique avec elle, dans plusieurs contextes. Sont ainsi successivement analysés : le conflit entre les deux « modèles » du Mind, le computationnaliste et le (...) dynamiciste; la définition philosophique et la définition épistémologique du Geist ; le jeu entre Mind et Geist dans les recherches cognitives contemporaines ; l’ambivalence de la logique et des mathématiques vis-à-vis de l’opposition Mind/Geist. Dans la partie finale, on propose une définition personnelle du Geist–en termes d’adresse et de sujet–dont dérive une détermination du Mind. Revenant sur ces nouvelles bases à l’interférence avec la mathématique, on conclut sur la question essentielle et délicate de la paramétrisation de la conscience. (shrink)

This question is addressed in the light of the mythological figure of Orpheus, which Miguel Herrero uses to illustrate his thesis in the field of religious iconography, while referring to other themes or motifs to verify his hypothesis in the area of rites and poetry. The issue raised is to know whether the opinio communis according to which elements of the pagan culture were “assimilated” to and by the Christian culture is a biased representation based on a more or less unconscious apologetic construction or if it relies on a historically attested reality. La pensée du cinéma ne rencontre d'ordinaire Jean-François Lyotard, dans ses textes sur le cinéma ou non, que par le biais de deux activateurs : l'acinéma et le figurai. Ces deux activateurs, au demeurant, sont fortement représentatifs de la position paradoxale de Lyotard pour les études cinématographiques : si l'acinéma a été le plus souvent critiqué pour sa radicalité voire son sectarisme, n'ayant de fait guère de postérité, il en va tout autrement du figurai, lequel a trouvé dans les (...) films un terrain fertile d'investigation. Tout autant représentative est la méconnaissance en théorie du cinéma de nombreux autres textes de Lyotard portant sur le cinéma ou sur des films, et dont on ne parle jamais, ainsi que de sa philosophie postérieure à sa période libidinale, qui ne semble pas avoir encore trouvé d'échos particuliers en régime filmique. Le présent ouvrage fait précisément le pari de ces deux directions. Der Artikel rückt die skrupulöse Arbeitsweise Valérys in die Nähe der »Genealogie«, wie Nietzsche sie neu begründet hat, und verleiht ihr die Züge eines analytischen Selbstversuchs. Indem er das Schreiben und die Reflexion des Schreibens unauflöslich miteinander verbindet, stellt Valéry alles in Frage, was die geistige Tätigkeit herkömmlicherweise auszeichnet: die Mythen des Hervorbringens, der Darstellung, der Originalität, der Wahrheitsfindung.

Jacques Derrida n'est pas seulement un membre de la generation subversive des annees 60-70, il a en quelque sorte regne sur ce moment philosophique. Sa maniere etait plus austere, son propos moins exaltant, mais il passait pour le plus brillant, s'averait comme le plus fecond et devancait les autres dans la reconnaissance internationale. Les adeptes de chacun des autres le connaissaient et reconnaissaient il les reunissait, en un sens. Il fut compte, d'ailleurs, comme le plus exasperant par tous ceux qui (...) sentaient dans ce moment un jeu trouble a l'egard de la rationalite. Il est encore trop proche de nos vies pour que l'on puisse pretendre rendre entierement justice aux milliers de lignes de son oeuvre. Avec le present ouvrage, on entend seulement offrir aux amateurs une introduction a une pensee difficile, accomplir un premier reperage de ce qu'elle a fait, de la maniere dont elle nous a marques et dont elle peut nous inspirer. On commence par exposer la pensee centrale de Derrida, celle dont le mot deconstruction signigie le programme. On raconte ensuite quelque chose du parcours de Derrida, du voyage de son ecriture parmi les pays et les enjeux de la culture. Puis on decrit Derrida dans l'activite chez lui fondamentale de la lecture des philosophes, en prenant l'exemple de ses discussions de Husserl, Levinas et Heidegger. Enfin, on evoque sa posterite et les prolongements que sa pensee pourraient connaitre. (shrink)

Turning away from entities and focusing instead exclusively on ‘structural’ aspects of scientific theories has been advocated as a cogent response to objections levelled at realist conceptions of the aim and success of science. Physical theories whose (predictive) past successes are genuine would, in particular, share with their successors structural traits that would ultimately latch on to ‘structural’ features of the natural world. Motives for subscribing to Structural Realism are reviewed and discussed. It is argued that structural retention claims lose (...) their force if one gives up merely historical readings of the transition from Galilean-relativistic classical mechanics to the ‘special’ theory of relativity, heeding instead basic requirements that lead to their common derivation. Further cause for scepticism is found upon realising that the basic mathematical framework of quantum theory essentially reflects its predictive purpose, without any necessary input, be it of a ‘structural’ kind, from the physical world. Malgré la notoriété de ses chercheurs, les études sur la science menées par la philosophie, l'histoire et la sociologie constituent un champ de recherche souvent méconnu. Or il s'agit d'un domaine décisif. En témoigne le succès des grandes revues de vulgarisation scientifique comme La Recherche ou Pour la science, dont les articles et les dossiers sont le plus souvent confiés à des philosophes, des historiens ou des sociologues des sciences. Jean-Michel Rabaté uses Nietzsche's image of a "pathos of distance," the notion that certain values cannot originate in a community but are created by a few gifted and lofty individuals, as the basis for a wide-ranging investigation into the ethics of the moderns. The expression of "pathos of distance" impressed would-be modernists like the American James Huneker and the Irish poet W. B. Yeats as they confronted the new in the arts. Later, it helped Deleuze and Barthes make (...) sense of modernity when they tried to tease out all the implications of "distance." Despite Benjamin criticism of Nietzsche's doctrine of the "eternal return of the same" in the Arcades Project, in his "Theses on the Philosophy of History" Benjamin envisions a redeemed history that follows Nietzsche's basic intuition about the need to make every moment count for history. By first establishing this unlikely meeting of Nietzsche and Benjamin through their ideas of history and ethics, Rabaté is able then to provide an original genealogy for the ethics of the modern, moving through figures and moments as varied as Yeats and the birth of Irish Modernism, the ethics of courage in Virginia Woolf, Rilke, Apollinaire, and others in 1910, Gide and Genet's ethical impulse to combine erotic liberation with the motivation for political revolution, and Derrida's reading of Joyce's Ulysses and a modern mode of writing that sought to get closer to the senses. The result is a fascinating critique of Nietzsche, Benjamin, affect theory, and the origins of the ethics of modernism. (shrink)

La dialectique est une des notions les plus recurrentes de la tradition philosophique, que les differents siecles invoquent, soit pour s'en reclamer, soit pour s'en distancier. Chez Platon, elle conquiert ses lettres de noblesse en etant promue au statut de science supreme, mais chez Aristote, elle redevient ce qu'elle etait avant la Republique, un art du dialogue, de la decouverte a tatons de la verite, une methode de raisonnement sur des premisses simplement probables, qui fraie la voie a la saisie (...) de la verite, qui defend les principes du savoir contre les objections possibles mais qui ne peut pretendre au statut apodictique de la science. Ce differend originaire sur le statut et la portee va se diffracter au cours de l'histoire en une multiplicite impressionnante de figures qui sont autant de sources d'inspiration ou de repoussoirs pour les productions philosophiques ulterieures. Mais par dela les differences et les oppositions dans la conception de la dialectique, n'y a-t-il pas moyen de degager des lignes de convergence, des caracteristiques communes? C'est le pari qu'ont tente les participants d'un colloque tenu a Louvain-la-Neuve en 2007, consacre a la dialectique. Le present volume reprend une serie de contributions qui y ont ete presentees et discutees. Il couvre les differentes periodes de l'histoire de la philosophie, depuis Platon jusqu'au XXe siecle, et aborde la question dans des aires philosophiques variees. A l'heure ou notre monde prend toujours davantage conscience de la necessite de changer le paradigme en vigueur au sujet de la rationalite, la dialectique, avec son approche necessairement modeste de la totalite, avec sa dimension pratique, bien mise en evidence dans les diverses contributions, et avec son ouverture constitutive a l'alterite, se revele comme une voie feconde pour frayer la route de l'avenir. The paper offers a glimpse at the diversity of what is labelled Philosophy of Culture, and then brings out some important issues concerning culture. The first section expounds etho-analysis as a way of doing philosophy of culture, introducing the notions of solicitator, sensance and ethos. It also gives an idea of how its program has been conducted with respect to love or truth. Etho-analysis describes the ideal part of culture, interpreting it as revealed by concrete practice. The second section discusses (...) whether and how far etho-analysis embraces the cause of truth and validates the scholastic tradition which has provided tools for it. Etho-analysis claims to formulate true descriptions. It understands meaning as unfolding its complication thanks to traditional tools, and recognizes the ethical significance of the community of science. (shrink)
