Editors of Cicero'sPro Archiahave assumed that Petrarch's lost transcription of the equally lost Liège manuscript that he discovered in 1333 survives in an almost unaltered version in a single Florentine manuscript, while the remaining 265Italireflect another stage of the text, when conjectural corrections by its learned discoverer were introduced into the text. This article proposes a reassessment of that dichotomy, based on a first comprehensive study of the whole transmission.

In this article we provide a unifying neural hypothesis on how individuals understand the actions and emotions of others. Our main claim is that the fundamental mechanism at the basis of the experiential understanding of others' actions is the activation of the mirror neuron system. A similar mechanism, but involving the activation of viscero-motor centers, underlies the experiential understanding of the emotions of others.

In this paper, prediction markets that encourage traders to bet on matters of life and death are used to explore the varieties and dynamics of moral repugnance. We define moral repugnance as morally charged feelings of revulsion that correspond (correctly, incorrectly, and indeterminately) to moral reasons and contexts. Rich variations of moral repugnance and their dynamic qualities are presented by investigating the contextual frames in which they arise. These contextual frames constitute interacting conditions composed of information about states of affairs, (...) moral reasons, and feelings of revulsion. Through careful study of two medical prediction markets that encourage betting on death, we can observe the interaction between these causal conditions to see how the varieties of moral repugnance emerge. We also present three interesting results that arise from analyzing the dynamics of moral repugnance in response to prediction markets. First, a prediction market can elicit several conflicting types of moral repugnance at the same time. Second, moral indeterminacy can arise in two different ways when judging prediction markets. Finally, some prediction markets can generate a moral endogeneity problem, a disruptive feedback loop between a given prediction market and the morally relevant outcome it predicts. (shrink)

Recent work by Keyser in applied epistemology of experiment has focused on the iterative ‘production’ of knowledge: knowledge stabilizes within a given physical context and it is iteratively tested within that context to meet standards of reliability. This implies that in a given physical context (e.g., laboratory), the inferences, methods/techniques, and physical products form coherence relations with one another. We apply this epistemological stabilization account to the martial arts in order to argue that the context of stabilization dictates the (...) training methods, techniques, and even the philosophical concepts of a given martial arts system. We describe key elements of stabilization pertaining to rules, training methodology, warrior philosophy, and spectator/media tropes. The account of stabilization requires a case study that shows how a dynamic system is stabilized. We describe the stabilization of modern mixed martial arts by tracking it on a time scale, but also in different contexts (e.g., Pancrase, Pride, UFC). (shrink)

Selecting a large and diverse sample of 5–6-year-old preschool children, we aimed to extend previous findings on variability in children’s home math environment and its association with children’s mathematical skills. We operationalized mathematics in a broader way than in previous studies, by considering not only children’s numerical skills but also their patterning skills as integral components of early mathematical development. We investigated the effects of children’s gender and socioeconomic status on their home math environment, examined the associations between children’s home (...) math environment and their mathematical skills, and verified whether these associations were moderated by children’s gender and/or SES. Parents of 353 children completed a home math environment questionnaire and all children completed measures of their numerical and patterning skills. Results indicated no effect of children’s gender on their home math environment. There was no effect of SES on the performed home math activities, but small SES differences existed in parents’ math-related expectations and their attitudes. We found no evidence for associations between children’s home math environment and their mathematical skills. Furthermore, there were no moderating effects of gender or SES on these associations. One explanation for these findings might relate to the characteristics of the general preschool system in the country of the present study. Future studies should consider the effect of the preschool learning environment because it might explain differences between studies and countries with regard to the home math environment and its association with mathematical skills. A concept like the utilitarian research regime by Terry Shinn can explain their material and intellectual production by allowing for a reconstruction of their social networks. Pierre‐Paul LeCointe and Louis Bourgoin , associates in an engineering consultancy office, institutionalised a consultation service at the Laboratory of Industrial Chemistry of the École Polytechnique of Montreal . The two industrial chemists were thereby able to obtain financial, material (...) and human resources through exchanges with industrialists, business men and civil servants; consequently, their material and intellectual production is marked by the preoccupations of the industries and government with whom they exchanged. Industrial development in Canada was, in part, based on the work of these consultants who helped private companies analyse primary resources, standardize fabrication procedures and adapt the production to regulations. The government also offered technological assistance to businesses thanks to consultants, while regulating the markets and producing industrial standards. The inception of a utilitarian research regime results from the conjunction of these different factors. Finally, on Bourgoin's initiative, the École Polytechnique created a research centre based on the model of consulting laboratories. (shrink)

Tychastic viability is defined in an uncertain dynamical framework and used for providing a “viability risk eradication measure”, first, by delineating the set of initial conditions from which all evolutions satisfy viability constraints, second, for the other “risky” initial states, by introducing their duration index. This approach provides an alternative to the stochastic representation of chance and these two measures replace the statistical measures (expectation, variance, etc).

En interrogeant successivement la façon dont Descartes, Spinoza, Kant et Schelling ont redéfini l’absolu et les conséquences qu’ils (...) en ont tirées pour la formulation de la question de Dieu, il s’agit de problématiser la notion du « tout autre », décliné de différentes manières dans les Miettes philosophiques de Kierkegaard, la théologie dialectique de Karl Barth, la phénoménologie du sacré de Rudolf Otto et, plus près de nous, chez Heidegger et Derrida. En analysant quelques nœuds remarquables de l’arc historique qui relie ces deux désignations, il s’agit de mieux comprendre le projet de la théologie philosophique moderne et de donner une profondeur de champ historique aux débats contemporains relatifs à l’« onto-théologie », l’« idolâtrie conceptuelle » et les « théologies négatives ». Measuring neuronal activity with electrophysiological methods may be useful in detecting neurological dysfunctions, such as mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This approach may be particularly valuable for rapid detection in at-risk populations including military service members and athletes. Electrophysiological methods, such as quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) and recording event-related potentials (ERPs) may be promising; however, the field is nascent and significant controversy exists on the efficacy and accuracy of the approaches as diagnostic tools. For example, the specific measures derived from an (...) electroencephalogram (EEG) that are most suitable as markers of dysfunction have not been clearly established. A study was conducted to summarize and evaluate the statistical rigor of evidence on the overall utility of qEEG as an mTBI detection tool. The analysis evaluated qEEG measures/parameters that may be most suitable as fieldable diagnostic tools, identified other types of EEG measures and analysis methods of promise, recommended specific measures and analysis methods for further development as mTBI detection tools, identified research gaps in the field, and recommended future research and development thrust areas. The qEEG study group formed the following conclusions: 1. Individual qEEG measures provide limited diagnostic utility for mTBI. However, many measures can be important features of qEEG discriminant functions, which do show significant promise as mTBI detection tools. 2. ERPs offer utility in mTBI detection. In fact, evidence indicates that ERPs can identify abnormalities in cases where EEGs alone are nondisclosing. 3. The standard mathematical procedures used in the characterization of mTBI EEGs should be expanded to incorporate newer methods of analysis including nonlinear dynamical analysis, complexity measures, analysis of causal interactions, graph theory and information dynamics. 4. and 5. are too long to include here. Phatic communication consists of laughing, crying, yawning, sighing, gasping, sneezing and hiccupping, actions that date back over 500 million years to the Reptilia class of the animal kingdom. During the (...) last million years, these biosemiotic actions have acquired psychological meanings in humans as a result of neocortex connections.The simultaneous presence of threatening verbal signs with empathic stereotype signs, such as violence with laughter or aggression with a smile, requires a rational / emotional effort to decide within milliseconds if the message is a threat or joke. L'intériorité et l'expression de l'intériorité occupent une place significative en philosophie. Au cours des dix dernières années de sa vie, Wittgenstein leur a consacré une large part de ses réflexions en s'engageant dans des voies inattendues qui rompent avec les présupposés ordinaires et s'ouvrent sur des perspectives inédites dont ses remarques sur la " philosophie de la psychologie " constituent le centre. Mais l'intérêt de Wittgenstein pour l'intériorité vise moins à en prononcer la liquidation qu'à la débarrasser des confusions qui (...) en obscurcissent le sens et à mieux en dessiner le visage. L intériorité, qui peut être une sorte de maladie, douce ou terrible, insidieuse, attrayante ou repoussante, est comme la face visible de notre langage et de notre vie dans ce qui les fait nôtres, les soustrayant ainsi à l'indifférence, à la monotonie et par conséquent à la mort. Cet essai sur Wittgenstein et la philosophie de la psychologie explore cette partie de son œuvre en s'efforçant d'en saisir la portée pour une partie des questions qui se posent aujourd'hui en esthétique, voire en éthique, ainsi qu'en philosophie du langage et de l'esprit. La parole du mille-pattes Titre etrange pour un essai de philosophie politique qui convoque les auteurs qui, depuis Platon, s'efforcent de cerner ce qui fonde notre existence sociale. " C'est avec de bonnes paroles que le mille-pattes traverse un champ fleuri de fourmis. " Selon ce dicton de Cote-d'Ivoire, ce n'est qu'avec ces bonnes paroles, sinceres et raisonnables, que le mille-pattes a evite un conflit avec les fourmis. Noble ancienne tradition qui a souvent permis a la discussion collective de prevenir (...) la violence des vengeances. Au siecle des Lumieres, substituer le droit et le libre debat aux rapports de force fut une promesse liee a tout ideal democratique. Or les siecles qui ont suivi ont comme jamais deploye des violences massives, souvent au nom de la liberte et du droit. Ici et la, malgre tout, le debat public et le souci de reconciliation ont permis de depasser des contradictions qui paraissaient insurmontables. La metaphore du mille-pattes vient rappeler que ce fut longtemps une regle commune. Apres avoir depasse la logique des vengeances individuelles et collectives, la justice civile et internationale devient parfois une forme legale de vengeance des vainqueurs, qu'elle pretend pourtant remplacer. La popularite de Gandhi, Luther King et Mandela, qui ont triomphe par les vertus de la simple parole, est-elle un echo du passe de l'humanite ou la promesse d'une reinvention a venir de la politique? En reprenant ces questions a la lumiere de l'heritage de vingt-cinq siecles de pensee, tentons de tracer les contours de cette " philosophie du mille-pattes " que le monde actuel, plus violent et inegalitaire que jamais, laisse affleurer comme un avenir possible. C'est pourtant à l'apparition de ce personnage étrange, philosophe et artiste, qu'en a appelé Nietzsche. Pour celui-ci, le philosophe-artiste est à lui seul une guerre, dès lors qu'il affirme que " l'art est une valeur supérieure à la vérité ". Giordano Bruno, Rousseau, Sade, Kierkegaard et Klossowski sont ici appelés à soutenir ce scandale philosophique : (...) c'est dans l'art - où le faux est vrai, tandis que le vrai y est faux - que nous aurions quelque chance de saisir la vérité onirique, fantasmatique et métaphysique de l'être. Jean de Jandun (ca. 1285/1328), maître es arts à l'Université de Paris durant la première moitié du quatorzième siècle, est considéré par l'historiographie contemporaine comme le principal tenant de l'"averroi͏̈sme latin", c'est-à-dire comme le défenseur majeur d'une psychologie extrême dans laquelle l'intellect est unique, éternel, et séparé par essence des hommes. Sa noétique procède en réalité d'une réarticulation ou d'une reprise active du corpus latin d'Averroès et l'on étudie sur trois plans (le rapport au corps, l'intervention de l'image, la (...) production de la pensée) comment elle s'élabore et chemine à l'écart du Grand Commentaire sur le De anima laissé par le Cordouan. La notion de subiectum sert de fil directeur, elle vaut chez Averroès à la fois pour l'intellect sujet-substrat des intelligibles et pour le phantasme qui sert de base à la formation du concept. On décrit donc quels "transferts du sujet" s'opèrent dans la relance de la noétique rushdienne, pour relever des glissements et finalement pointer la mise en place de problématiques nouvelles et constitutives, aussi, de notre modernité. Car, en reconnaissant à l'"averroi͏̈sme" une production réellement philosophique qu'on tendait à lui refuser, on fait apparaître combien l'oeuvre de Jean est solidaire de l'invention ou de l'accentuation d'une question capitale dont nous sommes héritiers : celle du sujet humain des pensées, celle de l'assomption de l'homme comme sujet. Investigating the writings of the Francesco Filelfo, twelve scholars are shedding new light on Filelfo’s intellectual endeavors and literary journey. This collection offers new inroads into Filelfo’s vast oeuvre, and through it to the world of Quattrocento humanism.

This article first presents a codicological and paleographical analysis of the Bibliotheca Medicea Laurenziana's manuscript Plut. 57.12, a codex containing the Epistolographi Graeci that was owned and annotated by Francesco Filelfo. The original nucleus of this composite was produced in Constantinople in the third decade of the 15th century. Afterwards, Filelfo himself had two copyists -one of whom is identifiable as Gerard of Patras - transcribe supplements to be added to the codex. Filelfo's ownership is proved not only by autograph (...) marginal notes, but also by the use of this manuscript as the source of Filelfo's Latin translation of several of these pseudepigraphic letters that were incorporated in his Commentationes Florentinae de Exilio, and by the correspondences between the marginalia accompanying the Commentationes and those in the Laur.
